20 Best Trumpet For Jazz (2022 Updated)

I was looking for a decent horn to build my chops. After not having played in 35 years, and not knowing how much time I could dedicate, I didn’t want to drop $3500 on a new horn. After reading many positive reviews, I decided to give the tr-430 a try.

The price was very reasonable, and if it played as well as the reviews said, it would be a great deal. First, let me say that customer service is right on point! I ordered ordered the horn and the order was processed, and shipped promptly.

The people at Jean Paul sent information about what was going on every step of the way which was nice. My first impression when I unboxed the horn was that the case left a little to be desired, but I’m not a young student, and I’m not going to play the case.

The horn had some light scuffing on the finish mostly caused by the bag it’s shipped in. It’s a nice touch, but a little too abrasive for shipping. The valves seemed a little lazy, but overall the horn seemed in good condition.

Before playing, I gave it a thorough cleaning and lubricated everything properly. I strongly recommend this to anyone before passing judgment on this horn or sending it back. The tolerances, and compression are decent, and the valves move very well now.

The intonation and range is surprisingly good, and the slotting is just loose enough to get in some good shakes and manipulate some notes. The bell taper is a little small, but the sound is really nice.

Not a deal breaker at all. Overall I’m very pleased with my purchase. The horn was shipped with valve oil, polishing cloth, and backpack straps for the case. A pair of cleaning gloves would’ve been nice since silver plate requires more attention than lacquer, but it’s really a small thing.

I wouldn’t compare this horn to the professional Yamaha I was playing 35 years ago because that is not an apples to apples comparison. What I will say, is that this horn plays very well, and has handled everything I’ve played through it gracefully.

For anyone considering buying this horn, I hope this information has been helpful. No, it’s not a Xeno, Bach, or Shilke, but it won’t set you back $3000 either!.

My qualifier. I purchased mine used on ebay from a seller not affiliated with Jean Paul. It did not appear the trumpet had seen much usage. This is my second Jean Paul trumpet; my other is a 860 Pro which I purchased new.

My horn looked new. There three small surface imperfections that I believe were always there. barely noticeable on close inspection. Otherwise the yellow brass / nickel contrasts are quite nice and overall, the trumpet looks elegant.

The valves weren’t as responsive as I wanted. I noted gray discoloration when clean my valve pistons which I believe was from factory lapping when the instrument was new. So I gave my horn a bath. Brushed the valve inner walls and spent time eliminating any gray shadows on the slide insides.

Then dried, oiled and reinstalled the pistons. I turned the trumpet upside down and oiled the valves again before reinstalling the bottom caps. Whala! Valve responsiveness much crisper and clean. Overall, I think that, as compared to my other horns, this trumpet is on the heavy side which is fine with me.

The Trumpet is easy blowing, well slots your notes and has a nice tone, a bright overall sound. not tinny, weak or dull. I am happy with my purchase and have really enjoyed playing it for a few days.

I have found lately, that all my new horns initially need a bath. just do it. Makes a great student without question. Seems to respond to all I try to do with it. plays in low, mid and high register readily.

Jean Paul support and responsive with my other trumpet was quick and impeccable.

Excellent by all measures. The Stradavarius 181 cornet is easy to play. It holds the note centers thru all of my range, pedal tones to the first octave above the staff. You can play higher? It will take you there.

The 37 bell, ML bore,and excellent pistons respond superbly. This cornet provides a stable foundation under the effort made to form each note. It shows up to get the job done well. And it sings. Shorter in hand than a trumpet, the cornet feels lighter.

With a bell closer to the ear, each note feels more personal and immediate. For british brass band, get their 184 model, as the shepherd’s crook imparts more ’roundness’ to how you’ll feel at the mouthpiece and under your fingers, that is, to the sound and responsiveness.

The 181 model is the better choice for jazz, for articulating more like a trumpet. There are good reasons why Bach makes each different model and style. I am very happy with this instrument.

Received my used LT180S37 Silver Lightweight Bell. It was everything that I expected and more! This used trumpet was well taken care of and nicely refurbished. The tone and quality sound was exactly what I expected of a Bach Stradivarius.

First off let me say that I know nothing about trumpets. This was a gift for my daughter and her school band class. The instrument arrived on schedule and was well packaged without any damage. It looks very good and is just as in the pictures.

My daughter loves it and likes the way it sounds. The sand leader however isnt so sure this is a regular Bach trumpet. The markings are correct but it is lighter that it should be and sounds different from his own ( he owns the same model).

We decided to keep it because of the low price and because my daughter loves it, however beware that it may not be the great deal it seems.

I cringe every time a student brings a Cecilio instrument into my classroom. They break easily and no repair shop will fix them because they are so cheaply made and don’t use standard parts. I currently have 2 students in class on these instruments; they cannot participate because their instruments are broken.

Please rent or buy your instruments from a music store.

I got a nice trumpet for under $100. It is a working trumpet. Looks like it cost way more than it did. I have not played for 30 years. It is well worth the money to find out if I am going to actually put the time in to get playing again.

If I don’t it would still make a great decoration. It works like it should and has a good sound. Perfect for anyone wanting to explore playing the trumpet. I don’t know how they can build and sell them at this price, I know now they can.

I absolutely love the trumpet!! As a musician, I love instruments of all kinds. And the trumpet was an instrument I’ve wanted to play for quite some time. So after doing my extensive research here and there, I settled upon Mendini to buy my first.

And what a great choice that was! All that was described in the description was what I received: the case, the body of the trumpet (in a drawstring bag), a mouthpiece (small separate baggie), valve oil, the cleaning cloth and the white gloves.

Inside, there were also two desiccants to suck up any moisture that might’ve came through. Awesome. Now the playing is a different story, haha. Of course, in my case as an absolute beginner, there’s no avoiding the first few questionable noises made as you perfect your embouchure, but it otherwise makes a clear and crisp sound.

This is the best trumpet I have played in 41 years of playing. It’s a beautiful horn that plays great. It has a rich deep sound that cuts through the air. I play weekly with a lively band at church and have had several compliments on the sound of this trumpet.

I even had a neighbor yesterday compliment my practice playing. I practice 2- 3 hours a night playing a variety of music including jazz and this Bach 72 makes it a pleasure. I wish I had bought this trumpet years ago!.

As a professional jazz musician, over the years I’ve owned Bach, Schilke & Yamaha pro trumpets. All have their merits, but I continue to reach for my Yamaha as my go-to horn. I own a new Bobby Shew II.

To avoid having to change setups on just one horn while performing, I also needed another trumpet to play with a Harmon mute and Shure clip-on instrument mike. I’m totally impressed with this latest Wayne Bergeron trumpet.

It has all the right stuff. Initially, I assumed the YTR-8335LA would be a bit too bright overall and too thin in the mid & lower ranges. Absolutely not the case. Played side by side against my new Shew horn, this Bergeron model has very similar sonic qualities.

The differences are slight, but the Bergeron does offer a very precise altissimo range and really comes alive when pushed hard. Both horns respond well to mouthpiece changes and exhibit the desired broad range of sound qualities one would hope for.

I do prefer the Shew model for ballads and general open playing with a larger cup mouthpiece (Denis Wick 3 Heavy Top). However, the Bergeron horn is perfect for that Miles Davis vibe with a Harmon mute and a lead mouthpiece (Monette B4LD S1).

It mics perfectly. Both trumpets are a joy to play — with lightening fast valves and impeccable intonation. Check out this fantastic Wayne Bergeron trumpet for yourself. Highly recommended.

This is really a great all around trumpet that really can do any style of music. I am impressed with its deep rich tones for ballads and with a MP change it adapts very well to jazz and commercial tunes.

The valves slot really nice and the included MP 16c4 is very useable. I love that the case holds 2 trumpets! I had a older Bach and wanted something different and I honestly like this Xeno 8335 silver more.

I play in a trumpet quartet, a brass quintet and a semi jazz combo, this is horn has been really great. I played on a getzen severnson for 40 years before buying this 8345GSll really has helped my range also not as stuffy as the older horn was.

Have had it now for two years still love it! You can’t go wrong with this horn except a HS player probably could not fill the horn up enough.

While I’ve been playing for less than a year, this instrument is made as best as it could be for a beginner and has overall improved my quality in playing. The staff was very helpful in guiding me to what would be the best for me.

I have 12 years of experience as a trumpetist; 7 of them as a lead player of a wind orchestra and a Big Band. Currently, I don’t earn money from playing, so I classified myself as “Experienced”, rather than “Professional Musician”.

I’ve been playing the same Bach Omega trumpet for 8 years and decided it’s time for a change. I went for a Yamaha, because my first trumpet was the standard YTR-1335 and I remembered the low price, consistency and fun nature of Yamaha’s trumpets.

I bought the YTR-2330 three months ago and it’s the best all-round trumpet I’ve played. Although it isn’t made in Japan as the old 1335 and 2335, it feels very solid and well-built. I got mine with two drops of excess glue on the top cap of the first valve; besides this, great construction.

It’s undoubtedly the most fun trumpet I’ve ever tried. It has a very rich tone and and awesome intonation. Its low C# and D are always in tune! In the low register, I get a very rich and dark tone, while in the upper register, I get a bright and powerful tone perfect for jazz parts.

I don’t notice any difference between my tone with this trumpet, compared to the tone I get with more expensive ones. However, tone is a very personal and subjective thing and your experience might differ from mine.

Also, I really like how ergonomic this trumpet is: the thumb saddle angle and the adjustable ring make it very comfortable for child’s hands. I have very small hands and use Yamaha’s synthetic valve guard: it’s very comfortable for me, much more than Bach or Jupiter trumpets.

In fact, it’s the only trumpet I can comfortably hold with a valve guard on. In addition, this trumpet’s bell is very lightweight; try to hold a 2335 (or a Jupiter entry-level trumpet) in your strong hand and this one in your weak hand, then lift both using the wrist muscles: there is a huge difference.

This trumpet is incredibly lightweight: it’s so much fun to “dance” while you play it. Moreover, this trumpet comes with the best trumpet case I’ve had. It’s a very thin and lightweight case with a back strap.

It’s very small and convenient for travel, but has the disadvantage of less room for mutes: my straight mute hardly fits in its pocket. Don’t judge this case by photos: go to the nearby music store and see it, as I did.

Since I bought this trumpet after a good experience with the 1335, I’ll make a quick comparison. The 1335 has slightly better sound projection and its valve casing caps are easier to put on. However, the 2330 is a bit easier to play, much lighter, has a thumb saddle and two water keys.

In other words, the 2330 has all the standard trumpet features the 1335 misses, so I find it to be a better trumpet for beginners. Personally, I play both the lead and second parts using this trumpet (with the 16C4 standard mouthpiece) in the orchestra, in many genres, ranging from Baroque music to late 20th century jazz.

Great sound; it blends very well in any piece. To sum it up – I don’t know how this trumpet compares to Yamaha’s more expensive trumpets, but I’d highly recommend it to anyone willing to play the trumpet, those who need a durable, fun-to-play trumpet or those who need a second trumpet, for use as a backup, practice or marching band trumpet.

Remember – no matter how expensive your trumpet is – if you’re a good musician, you’ll sound great on any instrument.

As a professional musician, I was looking for a quality horn for home practice. and at an affordable price. The YTR-4335GII meets my needs perfectly. The many upgrades on this Series II trumpet are significant and make it a joy to play.

It is a particularly good value for just a bit more than Yamaha’s student model trumpet. The materials and workmanship are first rate and on par with Yamaha’s professional-grade brass instruments. In this case, the Made in China stamp doesn’t matter.

The upgraded Monel valves are an absolute must and the gold brass bell and lead pipe add a genuine sonic improvement over the prior model. I wanted the convenience of a lacquered finish so I could avoid wiping down the instrument after every playing session as is needed with a silver plated finish.

Routine care & maintenance is all that is required. I also own a silver Bach Stradivarius and a silver Yamaha Bobby Shew trumpet. Surprisingly, this lacquered 4335II compares quite favorably in tone and playability to these costly pro horns.

I consider the YTR-4335GII to be an excellent step-up horn and a great value. Although not exactly an inexpensive horn, it is a very good trumpet for the price. I am pleased with my purchase and I recommend this trumpet to my students without hesitation.

In appearance, this instrument rivals any high end brand, and possibly with more adjustments for child hands. Musicians friend pricing cannot be beat. very attractive trumpet If your student is in need of their first trumpet, this should be your first try for a perfect fit.

I bought this for my son to play in the orchestral band. After picking it up for less than half what it currently sells for, I thought it was a great deal based on the reviews. Then a few weeks after he was playing it, he complained that the valves were sticking all the time, and his band instructor suggested we consider another trumpet.

Since I had the 2 year extended warranty, I called Musician’s Friend and they were very helpful in replacing it with a new one at no charge to me. Unfortunately, the exact same thing happened with the second one.

My son and his band instructor worked on the valves, cleaning, oiling with very good oil, etc. Nothing permanently helped. Two horns that do the exact same thing told me that any further replacements would be futile.

It was a good trumpet to learn whether or not my son would stick with playing the trumpet. Now that we know he will for the next 4 years, it’s time to retire this and get him a durable one. If you’re looking for a “see if I like it” trumpet, this is a good starter.

If you already know you’ll be sticking with the trumpet, I’d strongly suggest looking at better quality, non-Chinese models.

Though I am a professional musician, I must be clear that my experience playing trumpet, and specifically this trumpet,is only a few months. I am primarily a guitarist, but I consider myself a multi-instrumentalist.

I did have some general knowledge of the trumpet before I began playing thanks to my educational background and my many brass-playing friends. That said, if you are looking for a high-end instrument, this isn’t it, HOWEVER that does not mean that this trumpet is bad.

As a matter of fact, I have been playing this trumpet for three months now and I am impressed. When you first take this trumpet out of the box, you will need to clean and re-oil the valves. The valves were sticky when I first un-boxed my trumpet.

I expected as much because the instrument A) was cold from riding in the back of the delivery truck, and B) who knows how long it sat between the time it was manufactured and the time it ended up on my doorstep.

Cleaning and oiling the valves is easy and you should do this regularly even on expensive trumpets. I think about it this way: valve oil is cheap; damage due to dry valves is expensive! The mouthpiece it comes with may be a bit on the small side for me as far as cup diameter, but overall it is reasonably comfortable and reasonably easy to play through.

The bottom line: I like this trumpet, and I enjoy playing it. It is nothing fancy, but in my honest opinion, it can hold its own against any other trumpet out there. Overall, the build quality is solid, the intonation is solid, and the sound is clear.

I am very happy with this instrument!.

We were looking for a trumpet for my daughter to take to high school. The goal was to find a good instrument that she could advance in and not break the bank. This trumpet seems to be a solid lower end intermediate instrument.

It has a nice time and she was immediately able to play high notes with greater ease than in her older beginner trumpet. The valves move smoothly and make for a more even sound as she transitions between notes.

My daughter plays in the school band as well as in a recreational music group, and this trumpet is perfect for both. Her band teacher was pleased with it as well. If you have a child looking to advance for school or enjoy music as a hobby I would highly recommend this trumpet.

Jupiter 1100 trumpet (new). Intermediate horn, excellent condition. Beautifully done, no manufacturing errors evident. Silver finish immaculate. Intonation based on tuner response is excellent except for G below the staff which is a little flat.

Valves and slides work flawlessly. Good sound and tone; responds well to various morthpieces. Fairly easy upper register; relatively light weight. Top of the line case. I look forward to playing this horn.

This beautiful trumpet from Jupiter would be ideal for any intermediate/pre-professional musician looking to upgrade yet not ready to splurge for a truly professional horn. The tone quality produced is quite warm and the stainless steel pistons are incredibly smooth and easy to manipulate.

Stainless steel pistons are also quite resistant to wearing down and can help extend the time in-between ‘tune ups’. Jupiter has been one of THE brand names in brass and wind instruments for many years, with good reason, and this trumpet stays true to the quality expected.

Have played on a Bach 37 lightweight for over 40 years. Since coming out of retirement a few yeas ago have been playing in several horn bands, weddings, private venues, etc. and subsequently talked myself into “needing a new horn”.

Wow. I was blown away by the responsiveness and how much easier I was able to play in upper register with the rounded tuning slide. This horn can handle a lot of air with much less resistance than my 37.

With less energy needed to blow, endurance has improved. After looking for months at specs and getting reviews from pros. Decided on the LT1901B but didn’t want to spend the 3 grand + for a new horn.

Ran across add in musicians friend for a “blemished” horn at a significant reduction. I jumped on it. The horn has 2 small scratches on underside of bell near valve casing. Would have never seen them if it hadn’t arrived with sticky arrows pointing them out.

The horn is immaculate, love the color of the lacquered bronze bell. Glad I talked myself into this. Very pleased.

Having had a 2335 YTR I can say that the 5335 is a big upgrade. Less resistance to blow, lighter weight and a more beautiful color. It’s way easier to play for me and my son. He is enjoying playing this trumpet more than the 2335.

The case is a professional quality case. Made of nylon, and serves as a backpack also. Has two handlers, one in top and one on the side to be carried as a briefcase. Really happy with the purchase.

I consider myself an experienced musician rather than a professional because I play strictly as a hobby. I’ve owned this horn for 25 years and the finish still looks nearly new. I play primarily as a soloist and receive compliments on the clear and distinct tone.

Whenever I play with professionals using other horn brands I am consistently asked about mine. They are surprised when I tell them its a Yamaha. This is an impressive instrument. Occassionaly I’ve tested other horns under consideration for “upgrade”, but ultimately I’ve come to the conclusion that I love the sound of this instrument.

I’ve played trumpet for 27 years, professionally for 20. I knew the trumpet I wanted, and this was it. It said it was used, but it was in excellent, mint condition. Looks brand new. The case was also new, and it even came with a Bobby Shew jazz mouthpiece, valve oil, slide grease, and polishing rag.

It sounds beautiful, has a compact, bright sound, and it’s really easy to attack on the upper registers.

I play in many situations. Some call for lead playing and some ask for soloing behind a piano. With this horn I am able to bring just this one horn and satisfy all needs. Great all around horn and in my opinion the best option for the versatile musician who is forced to play any and every gig given to him.
