I used to live alone so I didn’t watch much TV in my living room. I recently got a roommate with similar entertainment preferences to mine, so we started watching quite a few TV series together. I had an excellent 55″ TCL TV with a great picture and sound.

wanted to upgrade to a larger TV as a Christmas present to myself, so I spent several hours over a 2 week period researching online. I made myself a chart comparing specs, prices, and availability, then headed to my nearest Best Buy with it in hand.

I was was pretty sure I was going to buy either a Sony 75″ X85J or a 65″ X90J, which are both the same price. According to my research, the 2 series were very similar, with the edge going slightly to the X90J.

That being said, some of the specs that were important to me tilted to the X85J. Best Buy had a lot of different brands and models on display, so I spent some time looking at some of the models that I had ruled out on paper.

After viewing several models, I agreed with my research that the Sony TVs had the best picture and specs for the money I was intending to spend. One of the displays they had was exactly what I needed to see, a 55″ over a 65″, right next to a 75″.

Seeing the 55″ over the 65″ quickly convinced me that there wasn’t enough size difference to justify spending the money for my upgrade, so I was leaning heavily toward the bigger screen. The sales rep that helped me had been with Best Buy for a couple of years and was very knowledgeable.

He pointed out the differences between the 2 models, then discussed my needs. He agreed with me that the 75″ was going to make me happier. The next challenge was whether or not it was going to fit in my SUV.

He borrowed a tape measure for me and we measured the box. I went out to the car and measured, determining that the width would work getting it in, but I was about 8 inches short getting it in lengthwise with the front seats as far up as I could get them and still drive.

I remeasured at an angle and estimated that if I took the headrests off we could rest it on the back of top of the seats. I went back inside with a big smile and said “Let’s do this. ” I bought the 75″, we opened it to make sure the screen wasn’t cracked, and plugged it in and fired it up to make sure I didn’t lose the “panel lottery.

” Everything checked out, so I went to get the car while he brought the TV to the front door. It took a lot of maneuvering, and I think he said 3 times “It’s nit gonna fit,” but sure enough, we got it in safely.

Once I got it home my roommate and I had it unboxed and up on the wall in about 1 minutes. Setup was a breeze, and the picture looks fabulous in my living room! Just a reminder, TVs look a whole lot bigger in your house than they do in a massive warehouse sized building with high ceilings.

Make sure you measure where your new TV will go before you buy it!.

I absolutely love this TV. The main reason is that Sony has the best processing of color. The color is fantastic, very natural, excellent color gradient, and the HDR pops just enough to make an impact.

Before doing my research, I thought Samsung or Hisense looked better because the color pops so much. However, I came to realize three things that were wrong with these brands. (1) the color pops so much that it completely misses the mid tones and everything looks unnatural.

(2) color calibration is way off. (3) they are terrible at reducing 24p judder. Sony has the best color and best motion. I don’t have that much space and didn’t want to break the bank. It’s the first year in a while I noticed Sony mid range TVs had 43″ models.

The x85j was the best bang for my buck. It doesn’t get as bright as the models above it, but it has all the processing power I need. Plus it has HDMI 2. 1 so my PS5 looks great. Some other perks: -I can control the PlayStation 5 with the TV remote -Google TV is very easy to navigate -the remote has a mic that you can turn off except for searching for things via voice, like on YouTube (though you can keep it on if you want Google assistant, but that’s creepy) -because it’s connected to Google, I could log in to my apps really quickly -the settings are very easy to navigate -i connected the PlayStation headset receiver to the TV’s USB port and I could use the headset with the TV Cons: -if you don’t update it it can very buggy, especially when using devices like the PlayStation and the switch, so UPDATE IT -sounds crappy but I have a low end soundbar -had some bugs with audio syncing at first, so I had to play around with the audio settings and make them very simple.

It seems the TV favors Sony surround sound systems and outputs to non Sony sound bars only in a very basic way.

The item doesn’t have the quality feel of a Samsung product, from the plastic look of the tv and the remote control. I had a bravia 12 years ago and remember that item really standing out especially with the sound.

My last tv was samsung and that still feels premium compared to this tv. The standard Sony web browser is poor and crashes so much that its not worth using. The OS is irrelevant if you don’t use any subscription services.

It focuses on these and if you don’t use them they get in the way because they are at the forefront of the OS. It’s a Google tv so Google should be at the forefront of the OS but it’s not and is in the background.

The app search is restricted and you can’t find all the apps you can on your phone. BBC apps still not available, itv too. You can get these on far cheaper tvs so this is unacceptable. Sound isn’t as expected, it’s a bit flat and not many profiles available to adjust this as with other tvs.

Same with picture, not many profiles and doesn’t handle fast moving images well. Wifi and screen sharing is really poor. My old Samsung still does this better the this Sony tv. Constantly losing connection and crashing so had to use a cable across my lounge for internet connection.

Full of bloat wear, a lot of apps which can’t be uninstalled and if you don’t use the big subscription services, ie, netflix, disney etc you’ll find the TV very annoying. Good points are, not much screen glare, better than the LG and Samsung items, PS4 connectivity is good and works seemlessly.

Has a designated slot once plugged in. Also connecting Bluetooth mouse and keyboard is also good, however, mouse does not work well, is too fast and so far can’t find options to adjust this so is useless.

Great TV for the price! The 4K picture is clear with bright colors & the deep black levels are surprisingly very good! After some research, I found out that this Toshiba model was manufactured by Hisense & its basically similar to the Hisense A6G & U6G models.

You’re in luck if you bought the 50″ model because its the only screen size in this model that uses the VA (Vertical Alignment) panel instead of the IPS (In-Plane Switching) panels that are used for the 43, 55, 65 & 75 inches.

VA panels offer high contrast & deeper black levels but the drawback is the viewing angles are not so good if you’re not directly in front of the screen. Google VA vs IPS if you want more info. The speakers are OK.

I would recommend getting a sound bar to better enhance your viewing experience. There are a few minor negative issues with this TV which I’ve experienced during use. It suffers from banding, artifacts (macroblocking) & noise during low lighting scenes at certain times.

Also, since it features the (Amazon) Fire TV UI, I’ve noticed that HDR is only enabled when viewing HDR movies on Amazon Prime & YouTube. This is somewhat disappointing since I also have Netflix, HBO Max & Disney+ but HDR doesnt work for those streaming platforms.

I hope this issue will be resolved with software upgrade by Amazon in the future. Overall the benefits outweigh the few minuses. I would highly recommend this if you’re looking for a budget TV for a small room or office.

Solid television! Summary: Fire OS is better than Google for anyone with roommates or a family and multiple accounts, and the sound was better than TCL, yet all new TV sounds are sort of sucky and thin.

We bought this after returning the TCL 55″ Google TV model. The sound was tinny, like worse and less bass than my $35 bluetooth portable speaker. While this tv was scads better, it’s still a theme. Apparently, it’s Apple-effect: in an effort to banish fat televisions (tv-anorexia is in style at the moment,) manufacturers have taken the opportunity to shave off some pounds a bunch of their cost and transfer it to you, with the need to buy a sound bar.

I haven’t bought a tv in 6-years, and the last plenty-thin-enough tv actually had speakers. From the VERY little sound demo I could hear at Best Buy (literally one or two tvs had sound demos with no soundbars) they all sound like this.

The TCL’s sound was unacceptable, although it could’ve been a lemon, but the Toshiba’s was acceptable, although I do run it through my stereo. The FIRE interface is WAY, WAY better than the Google TV, which was painful.

On Google TV, you can only have one master, logged in account. So my husband’s horror movie thumbnails show up on the family tv with my kids. There’s no way to change the main account other than resetting the tv to factory standards and starting over and spending an hour re-downloading apps.

This Toshiba has the Amazon Fire interface which was delightfully not Amazon-slanted. Other apps are easy to get to (not so w/Google TV) and you can change accounts easily and it works better for a family.

I hope this has been helpful for any of you buying a tv for the first time in awhile – it’s. a whole different world out there.

While this is a budget level TV, it is suitable for everyday viewing and general HD content. It has some display drawbacks when compared with mid-range models, but for the price this LCD HDTV is an outstanding value.

It is light and mounted on our fully articulating arm easily, It took a total of 10 minutes to configure and transfer all of my accounts on to it, and it is fairly snappy in the menu responses. 60Hz refresh wasn’t an issue as mostly this will be used for casual watching in the living room by the fireplace with no competing glare or outside light to flush out the display.

The LCD is good for artificially lit rooms with no direct or angular sunlight on the screen. The speakers are definitely lacking and tinny, so the sound bar will be mounted in the next week below the screen with a remote wireless sub to make the movies a bit more realistic.

If you have Amazon Prime, along with Netflix, Disney+ and an HDTV antenna this is the lowest model I would go and still enjoy the picture and viewing. Any lower performance from this model and you are definitely going to notice a vast difference.

We upgraded from a much older 720p HDTV, so this is technically on a whole different level. Our high end TV is in the basement theater. If you are looking for a budget TV with most of the options you “need” and not much in the way of adjustability or tailoring for games.

Out of the box, this TV’s picture looked absolutely horrible. There was way too much blue, the brights were totally blinding and the darks were pitch black with no detail. It was only after I got an HDMI 2.

1 cable, enabled input signal plus on the TV, enabled HDR with full color depth on the computer and researched how to adjust the TV’s picture settings that it started to look OK. Running the TV at 4K / 120 Hz is the best way to go.

8K at 60 Hz isn’t as good. Hence, the 8K is a total waste of time and money. Lastly, the sound on this TV is total garbage – some of the worst I’ve ever heard out of any TV. It’s difficult to make out words when watching programs and it all seems to mish-mash / echo unintelligibly together The solution for me is to wear bluetooth headphones.

My iphone 12 pro max puts out better sound than this thing and is a fraction of the size. For the money, this wasn’t worth it. You’re better off getting a higher spec 4K OLED with better sound and picture.

On the positive side, 4K at 120 Hz and carefully researched and adjusted picture settings makes it look pretty good. But for the money, this thing should support a higher refresh rate at 8k and come with some better built in speakers.

I’ll also say that the difference between 4k and 8k, even with an 85 inch TV screen is practically unnoticeable. The so-called “upscalling” seems more of a myth than a reality.

Our last tv we purchased from bestbuy broke after two and a half years, it needed a new panel. We had geeksquad and they sent over a company fairly quickly and he accessed it and told us it would have to be replaced.

After a month of waiting to hear back, we called bestbuy to find out when they would be replacing the tv and they admittedly seemed shocked it took as long as it did and we received our full purchase price the next day (in store credit).

Which brings us to this tv, we looked around for long time, decided a 120hz was a must and this tv was on sale in September $300 off. It had everything we wanted, looked great and was the last one. We brought it home and it was perfect, for about a week.

Then we started noticing a blur while you played video games (if you move you camera you’ll see blurred lines around the character model), also the sound would be almost under water like at times, although this comes and goes.

Lastly on a daily basis when you first turn the tv on it will turn off and reset itself likes its on a sleep timer within the first 10-20mins (it’s completely random). Now today I was changing the hdr settings on a game and there is and audible cut and the screen goes pixelated and then black for a few seconds.

I’ve changed that setting a few times now and that didn’t happen before which leads me to assume the panel in this model isn’t much better. This was what made me write this review, I do love this tv in most ways but wow does it have its issues.

This is the second Sony I’ve purchased from this Best Buy and they do not last. I will say the manager was very helpful when he found out what happened the first time so I purchased geeksquad again. Now the fact it hasn’t even last two full months is bothersome.

I was worried this would happen going with Sony again but at the time they didn’t have many choices for 120hz under $2000. Now I’ll have to wait until I have a serious issue as the process for geeksquad isn’t worth the “minor” problems I’m having and the fact my warranty will be “fulfilled” the second I have anyone here.

Enjoy the sales people, look around. Do not buy this model.

Tried this tv for about a week but decided to take it back and grab a TCL Series 6 QLED Mini LED. Why I decided to do this was for cost as even with this set on sale for $1200 the TCL can be grabbed for $300 less.

Many reviews and even looking at the picture quality showed both TVs to be pretty close in how the pictures looked but found the black level to be deeper and colour level on TCL to have more punch than the Sony.

Sony has a nice picture but just found it a bit more flat in its colour and black level – but this could be preference too. Also found you had a lot more blooming in a dark scene that may show white letters on the screen as there was a white glow around those letters on the Sony that filled a good chunk of the screen since Sony is using less dimming zones then even the TCL.

Sony does have a more accurate picture out of the box and has HDMI 2. 1 (still waiting for an update plus there seems to be an industry issue with getting these HDMI 2. 1 ports to work right for next gen gaming).

TCL Series 6 has some similar features like VRR, ALLM & a THX certified game mode but no 2. 1 HDMI so can still play a PS5 but just will not give you the highest frame rate – just felt that it seems to be a non-factor at the moment and will not be a big issue even down the road as feel most games may just settle for 60 frames and not use the full potential yet.

Would recommend this TV if you really want to spend the extra $ and want 2. 1 HDMI (assuming they can get it to work with an update they still have not delivered on) – also has a good picture but just a bit flatter in the colour and black.

Just thought for me the 2. 1 was not as important for gaming and wanted to save the cash and grabbed another comparable TV which ended up being the TCL Series 6 QLED Mini LED.

it really is as good as everyone says. probably the best set you can purchase for the money. i got the 85″ monster. Dolby vision content is STUNNING on this tv. in fact, too bright, as i had to turn down the brightness a tad when calibrating.

after calibration, it’s the best tv i’ve ever owned picture wise by a long shot (so far, ive only had it less than a week). it isnt perfect. i dont feel that any tv out there is, unless you go the “omg!” expensive route and purchase a micro LED (not to be confused with mini led’s).

Those are currently hard to come by and run many tens of thousands of dollars. the apps built in are great and snappy, but ive already had to do a hard restart on the tv twice to “reset” the apps, which im not a big fan of.

and it’s worth noting that though all apps support dolby vision where available, not all apps currently support dolby atmos, and really should. its a shame to have apps this nice built into the set, then have to plug in a firestick or apple tv to get gull functionality out of the tv.

that isnt so much on Sony though as it is on the app developers. 8 k tv’s are great, but they all upscale everything, and an upscaled 8k image, doesn’t look as good to me as a 4k native image on a 4k display that there is lots of content available for.

8k content is pretty much only available on YOUTUBE right now. overall its an awesome set. if you care about the details and want a giant tv, for the price, this one i truly believe is the best, not just because i bought it either.

i ALMOST pulled the trigger on the less expensive LG 85 that has 120hz and hdmi 2. 1. but after going and actually looking at them side by side, i made the right choice, the differences aren’t subtle.

really no company touches sony in regards to raw picture quality and sharpness. If you can spend a little more, and dont need the giant screen, i also feel the best tv you can buy period regardless of cost, is the Sony A9 Oled.

that tv has the best picture i have personally ever seen, but comes at a premium i just couldn’t justify spending when the 900 is SO good and i needed the giant screen for my studio. ive had my hands on the new models.

i would recommend that if you go 77 or smaller, get the 2021 models, the internal AI is better, but not better at the cost difference from the 2020 models until the x95j. if you go that route or higher (oled) grab a new set, the extras money is worth it.

if you arent that picky, the 2020 models like the one i bought are GREAT sets.
