20 Best Universal Edger Attachment (2022 Updated)

I do not recommend this product, as purchased, for anyone with more than a moderate sized edging task. I wanted to move to a single platform for my lawn power tools and after a good bit of research, I purchased the EGO edger as a kit.

I have about 950 feet of sidewalk and other edging, so I thought the the EGO edger would be the ideal system to start with. The kit comes with the 2. 5 AH battery, the edger attachment, and the PH1400 Power Head that features a brushless motor.

It’s easy to assemble out of the box and you can be ready to get to work in 30 minutes after breezing through the manuals for each component. I put the battery on the charger just as soon as I opened the box to start getting it topped off.

The components feel sturdy and I did not see any flaws in fit or finish. The Details: After letting the battery charge for an hour and having a fully charged LED indicator, I installed the battery and headed out.

This was my first edge of the season. I had not established a working groove so the edger was going to need to move the dirt and cut some spreading grass (tall fescue). I plunged in and started the cut with the speed setting on 2.

I pushed ahead about 2 feet and the unit bogged and shut off (brushless current limit). Restarting in the ground was not possible, the in-rush current immediately tripped the shutoff again and I had to pick the head up, get it spinning, and then restart the cut.

After about 5 minutes of this, I assumed that I didn’t get a full charge on the battery, so I placed in back on the charger and decided to try again the next morning. After 16 hours of charging, I tried again the next morning only to find I was having the same experience.

I pushed through to see if maybe I just needed a different technique to compensate for what seemed to be an underpowered tool for this application. I went over it multiple times with light passes and that seemed to help some.

Unfortunately, ater finishing about 115 feet in around 30 minutes, the unit was dead. I put it back on the charger and got out my blower to clean things up. After about an hour the battery indicated fully charged again.

So I took it back out to work on the next section. Same frustrations. It was here, as I am fighting with the unit starting and stopping frequently, that I begin to notice that the trigger is quite stiff and makes my hand tired quickly.

Also, that It is hard to use left-handed because the trigger lock is only on one side. The ergonomics aren’t terrible, but they aren’t great either. After about another 30 minutes of moderate duty work, its dead again and back to the charger.

Summary: I am sure if I purchased a very expensive, higher Amp Hour battery, I could get more runtime on this unit. That would also add weight and likely make what is already a not enjoyable experience even worse.

As I said, I had planned on completely converting to this platform for all of my lawn tools. But as it stands, this unit is getting boxed up and returned. I am looking forward to getting back to a gas option that has the power to get it done, is similar in weight, and I don’t have to buy another $300+ battery to get the runtime that I need to maybe finish the the entire job.

I have included a couple of images for reference of the first leg of the job.

I previously used a Black & Decker electric (corded) edger. Moving to EGO allowed me to eliminate the hastle of extension cords and utilize my existing batteries and charger from other EGO tools I own (mower, trimmer, blower).

The edger does a great job and has planty of power. It was easily able to edge areas that were more than a year overgrown which my previous edger could not handle. Because the EGO does not have a FRONT guide wheel it is up to the user to modulate cut depth by how they angle the edger shaft/handle.

This took some practice out of the box. If try to go too deep on startup, the blade “stalls” and kills power until you release the trigger and start again. When operating, the blade spins in a manner that makes the edger somewhat self-propelled.

So if you go too deep it feels like the tool wants to pull out of your hand or pull you along. Certainly no effort required to get the edger to move forward (just let the blade go a little deeper and it will pull harder) but it does take a little practice to adjust to this feel.

My one concern with this edger is that the blade guard is completely open on one side (lawn side). As a positive this does eliminate clogging of the blade area (which happened frequently with my previous edger, especially if there was moisture in the grass or soil).

Some build-up still occurs with the EGO edger but it does not impact performance. Users should be VERY aware of their surroundings due to this open guard design as I saw the edger throw one rock more than 30 ft.

I’m a bit of a yard nerd. I’ve had people stop to ask how I get my yard so nice. So I take the tools I use to maintain it pretty seriously. I bought this expecting to return it. I thought there’s no way a battery powered edger can get through the growth of grass and sod my professional brand does.

I was wrong. First my impressions on opening the box. The edger is well made and heavier than I thought it would be. This isn’t really an issue since an edger rolls along the pavement or ground and doesn’t need to be “held up” like a trimmer does.

I only mention the weight in that I was surprised with the pro feel of this brand. The feel of the clicks when assembled, the design of the shield, the ease of adjusting depth, the handle comfort. It’s all professional quality.

On first use I must say I was happy with the low amount of vibration. Just pop a battery on and whirl, low noise and low vibration. When starting to edge if you hit the concrete or any firm object when trying to enter on the first depth cut it will stop.

To protect itself I guess? Where gas will just bounce around on the pavement and in your hands. Gas edgers are a “dumb” tool that doesn’t know any better. I consider myself expert level with outdoor power equipment but even I get the entrance wrong on occasion.

So when that happened I first thought geez this is weak. But on the second try I landed exactly correctly and the tool took right off. Not only was it quiet and vibration free it seemed to have all the power I needed.

I raised the depth wheel all the way which makes the cut deeper. I wanted to make sure it passed this test. Where my old professional gas model would do it also it would lose RPM and I would hold up a second to recover blade speed then go ahead again.

The Ego actually pulled me along. I was surprised at the power and I thought I just may be keeping this. To really test the Ego so I was sure I went to friends and edged her sidewalk that never gets edged.

It had inches of overgrowth. It cut through hers also. Enough the strips of sod left where big enough I had the scoop them up with a shovel and move them around back, it was cutting up that deep and heavy.

I was impressed and decided to sell my gas model. Now here some other items I’ve noticed. The motor is on the back of the device, this is a difference from my Ego trimmer where it’s on the trimmer head.

On this tool putting it at the rear allows different attachment to be driven by the internal cable/shaft. Also I believe this motor to be bigger which could explain the impressive power. The trigger.

It doesn’t provide the same type of broad modulation as the trimmer does. This multitool-edger is a bit more on/off on the feel. But I find it’s not really an issue for two reasons. One is the device as a two speed selector.

So think of it like a high and low. Also on a multi tool or edger I pretty much run it mostly wide open anyway. So along those lines. I always use this tool on the fastest speed. I do that because the more times the edger blade can hit the grass it looks more crisp and clean.

Think of it like beard trimmers. You have less stragglers anytime there is more contact with the blades. For that reason I find it best to use the faster speed. For those unfamiliar an unwritten rule with edgers is that a straight shaft edger like this is geared lower so it has the power to cut through unmaintained properties and look good.

Where a curved shaft edger has a higher gear that spins the blade faster the makes the cut look even a bit crisper. This is most often for maintained properties, where the lower gear isn’t needed. I am 100% satisfied with this edger but.

I do wish Ego made a curved shaft attachment with a faster speed. Lastly, the edger has a guide on the bottom of the edger that is removable. If you are an experienced edger you won’t need it because you just “feel” where you are.

Another reason I removed it is because it seemed to cut the deep overgrowth of unmaintained sidewalks better without it attached. If your work isn’t on sidewalks with inches overgrowth it won’t matter if the guide is on or off.

If you are new to edging I’d advise leaving it on. I’ve attached a couple pics of the finished look of the grass and edges. Overall this is easily a 5 star tool.

This is a fantastic addition to the Milwaukee Quik-Lok line and a must have if you have lawns that would benefit from edging. The attachment is solidly built and looks and feels like a quality product.

It comes well packaged. no shoulder strap included with this purchase. The attachment is quickly and easily mounted on the power head and runs smoothly and quietly with batteries lasting a surprisingly long time.

The guide wheel is easily adjusted to change depth of cut with a simple knob. An included dirt flap minimizes debris kick back and a skid plate protects the gearbox from damage. The included 8″ blade appears to be generic and should be easily replaced though I anticipate a long service life.

I have found that this edger outperforms the Stihl Kombi edger I had previously used with the added bonus of a quieter running, exhaust free motor. Endless crisp cuts along lawn edges makes this a recommended purchase.

I use the tool for home use. I am a Milwaukee fan… I have quite a few products. This edger works as described and typical of Milwaukee… well made. But I surprised it does not have a edge guard/guide for a sidewalk.

I find it somewhat difficult to keep that perfect straight edge with out it. All the other manufacturers have this feature. I am not sure why they left this out. I probably will not use it that often because of that.

I purchased the Power+ so I could utilize the pole saw and edger attachments. The pole saw worked great for my needs. However, the edger was a failure. The shaft is straight and very long. The causes the cutting end to easily be deflected by roots of the lawn as it progresses along the edge.

The edger has a single wheel ~1″ wide which makes it highly susceptible to wobble. Nothing I tried improved this wobble. This included holding the motor/battery at ear height to shorten the distance up and increase control of the head.

All this accomplished was exhaustion from holding the heaviest end of the tool at head height. After two months of trying to master this, I gave up. I bought a battery powered Ryobi with a curved shaft and have used it ever since.

I wasted a lot of money buying the Ego Edger. As a boy, my family had an electric edger requiring an extension cord. It had 3 small wheels. Two in back about 3″ apart and one in front of the cutting blade.

That tool was easy to use and solid as a rock. I suppose Ego has determined it would cut into profits to actually design an edger that would be accurate and easy for the consumer to use.

I had mixed results with the pole hedge trimmer, mostly because of the weight issue. it’s heavy, almost (for me, anyway) unwieldy. But as I already had the power unit, I figured I could at least try the edger; at very worst, I could return it.

BUT. honestly, I don’t know how I lived without this thing! Prior to this I’d always do the edging either with my Ego weedwhacker (really, best one I’ve ever used, which is why I went down the Ego rabbithole in the first place!), or, in the distant past, with a sharpened flat shovel.

Either way, a lot of effort. But this edger. simply put, a gamechanger! First, it fits snugly, EASILY, into the power unit slot. Unlike some of the other modular tools of this nature, the linkage was firm and solid, with only one way to make it snap in.

Perfect. In using it, it does have a slight tendency to propel itself forward; with a bit of effort, you can use that to your advantage to let the machine do pretty much all the work. For me, the biggest challenge was figuring out how deep I wanted the edger to bite.

It’s not rocket science, pretty simple with just one no-tool-needed turn knob, and totally a matter of preference. so, NOT hard at all. For a job that would usually take (with the weedwhacker) easily an hour for all my walkways, curbside, driveway, etc, the edger did it all in less than 15 minutes.

and that included a time-out for some Gatorade. It really isn’t often I find one gizmo that can change my whole outlook on any specific chore. but this edger did exactly that. I guess now I’ll have to try some of the other attachements that can fit the same powerhead.

I looked for this combo kit MHC1502 for months as I wanted to go green and it was out of stock everywhere locally. Lowe’s price was $399 and others had it for $550. I signed up for Lowe’s email notification when the item was back in stock.

Two months later I received an email from Lowe’s saying they had the item so I went online to order immediately, the price went up $20 so no big deal. After getting the delivery, I charged the battery fully and used the weed eater that worked like a charm then edged my yard to perfection.

Both tool attachments worked just as good as my gas tools so I felt I hit the jackpot. I cut and edge my yard weekly and I was adding this kit to my push EGO mower LM2101SP. A week later it was time to cut and trim the yard so I pull out my tools and starting edging.

About halfway through, the edger starting vibrating more than usual and making a strange noise. I stop and removed the edger attachment from the head to check it by turning the shaft with my hand to see if the blade would turn; it did not turn.

I re-attached the edger and tried to see if it would work after resetting. That didn’t fix it so I attached the weed eater to the head see if it would work and it worked without an issue. I determined it was a faulty edger so I call EGO warranty center to see if they could send me a new edger attachment.

Remember I just had the kit two weeks from an online order. EGO said I had to take it back to Lowe’s since I had it less than 30 days. Of course Lowe’s is out of stock again and all I call do signup for email notification again and wait.

I’m in the south and the grass is still growing. I was getting ready to give my gas tools away and going green. This sucks.

While I expected nothing less than superior performance from an Echo product, this unit actually exceeded those expectations. This edger attachment works so well it’s amazing. It cuts smoothly and does so without the need for so much as a second pass.

Pretty much all that’s required is to keep the blade away from the driveway, road, sidewalk, etc. and you’ll wind up with neat and clean edge. If I had a criticism it would be due to the lack of a hanger.

Echo PAS attachments typically come equipped with a hooked cap that fits over the end that connects to the powerhead. This didn’t and I had to shell out $6 for one. Seller please take notice of this oversight.

Attachment works well, though I have nothing to compare it to. It edged the grass very well, and even did a great job defining the line with the road, which hasn’t been done in years, if ever. It’s easy to install into the weed eater and makes it easier to own, since it’s not attached to its own motor.

I really like it and would recommend it.

This fits all universal type power heads. wont mention brands. The all aluminum guard sets this one apart. no plastic here. As easy a blade change as I’ve ever done. Simply the best one made for universal type power heads.

I bought this attachment because it claims to be universal, however it does not connect to their battery trimmers. It was returned and they need to change advertising of this unit to say universal to gas trimmers.

Used it first day I received it. At first it didn’t do th’e job…,but I realized the grass had grown over the concrete and I wasn’t actually following a guide trench. Slowed down and it worked perfectly.

Went over a few days later and had no problems whatsoever ever.

I needed something to help me catch up on the lack of trimming over the summer along curb and driveway edges. The grass had crept so far onto the concrete that using just a trimmer would have taken ages and plenty of line trimmer to do.

After about an hour or so of using this tool I had all my edges done and just needed to use the trimmer to clean them up a little, which took minutes for me to do instead of hours. Complete time saver and now they’ll be easier to maintain.

Just in case you’re wondering why I needed to use the trimmer after, remember this is just for edging which just digs a little trough into the ground between your sidewalk, driveway etc. and your lawn.

The tines weren’t designed to cut blades of grass like your trimmer. That trough though does make it a lot easier to trim after since now there’s plenty of room below where your lawn sits making it less likely to throw stones as you’re going and using up your trimmer line.

Great product if you know it’s limitations. Next I’m going to try and use it help me cut a channel out to buy an electrical line to the shed. Should help me cut the two edges of the channel so I can lift the grass up and save it to put right back on top one it’s done.

We shall see.

I haven’t had a chance to use my new Mantis yet. I can’t wait until spring! I. Purposely purchessed the electric Mantis so that I could use it without my husbands help. I didn’t want to deal with gas or pulling a starter.

My husband put it together quickly. When a small plastic part broke while he was putting it together, he called Mantis and a new one was shipped and arrived within a few days. I bought a Mantis because I had never heard a negative review from a customer and have personally known people who owned gas powered Mantis.

My garden is small and close to electric source so I do not anticipate any problems.

Great tool for gardening and edging. I also have a Troy Built for seasonal tilling. Mantis is light weightt and great for cultivating. Wish I had purchased earlier.

I really liked this attachment. It worked perfectly the first 2 times I used it. The problem came when after the second use I tried to take the attachment off and it would not come off of the unit. The button would not push in because the inside part was blocking it from coming off.

When I finally got it apart, the piece inside was exposed and I couldn’t get it back in. I took it to an authorized dealer in Calabash, NC. The man who waited on me told me he did not have time to work on warrantied products.

I tried calling several places but was told that there would be a charge. I tried unsuccessfully to get in touch with someone from Troybilt to help me fix the problem. This is a brand new piece that was used only 2 times.

I feel that this should have been fixed at no charge to me.

I have used many different types of products and I always wondered if a company would make a single unit with multiple attachments to perform any job. To me it makes life easier and makes sense. The installation and removal process of the attachments is a 2 second job.

The room I have left in my single car garage is priceless. To me organization is key. Instead of 4 or 5 different machines doing 4 or 5 different jobs and taking up valuable floor space is nonsense, now my floor is free for the vehicle and the wall is the new.

Since I had purchased my first troy-bilt weed eater and edger I am now looking at the rest of the attachments for my next job Especially the cordless engine starter.

Out of the box this comes ready to use. Blade is a rectangle with no sharpening at all. On first try, it was not as powerful as I had hoped, even with throttle wide open and a running start into the grass edge.

I started to do multipasses at a shallower depth and it turned out better, but not an easy task no matter what the depth. Cuts down about 2 inches (5cm) and is fairly clean, I think I’ll sharpen the leading edge corners to cut better through the grass, and then balance the blade as well, it vibrates at higher RPM.

Other then the above, Happy with the purchase, should add a crisper look to my lawn and gardens.

I had an edger very similar to the ClickLink edger that did not work very well. After 2 years of use, the plastic cover broke, which made it useless. I just now purchased the Poulan Pro Edger and. WOW, what a difference.

It is solid. The cover is metal, the wheel is bigger and roles smoother, and this thing edged like a hot knife through butter!! I would recommend this to any DIY landscaper out there who is looking for an edger attachment.

I bought a Weedeater trimmer 2 years ago and it has given great service. I wanted to add an attachment to edge and waited for it to come back into stock. I checked the fitment and it states clearly it fits Weedeater along with several others.

I placed my order and when it arrived I saw right off there would be no way it could work. My trimmer uses a large barrel screw to pull the two pieces together. This attachment uses a locating pin and it is for trimmers with 2 piece collar locks.

Even the shaft design is wrong, they would never fit together. I was really looking forward to its use. Real let down. I guess wasted time and now for a waste of my time to return.

This is a great little unit, which does its job very well. It is easily adjustable for cutting depth, and is simple to handle. I just spent 2 hours edging my driveway, and the blade shows hardly any wear.

Great addition to a combi set up for a reasonable price. I used this on my Husqvarna 128LD.

Easy to attach. Easy to steer. Good power. Appears solidly built. Only negative is that it will eject dirt onto your feet, but I suppose that may be unavoidable.

Exactly what I was looking for for my damage unit that needs replacement. A value when it did its job correctly without any fuss or problem. I hightly recommended it.

tools work very well for light/home owner yard works. I ordered a weed wacker, bush cutter, edger and a snow thrower. Everything runs on the same 40v battery. They are great consumer level battery powered tools, clean, convenient and get the job done.

The 40v/5mp battery seems holding up well. Cut 200 feet of edge and the fully charged battery barely went done. May need a second battery for backup for the snow thrower in the winter as I plan to use the snow thrower on my 1,000 sf wooden deck.

It takes 90-120 minutes to fully charge up an empty battery.

I bought the attachment capable trimmer which works great so i also bought this attachment to do the edging as it was getting difficult to do the edging with the trimmer. Best decision this thing makes the job very easy and i have a perfect edge for my lawn.

Love the fact attachments save a lot of space instead of buying a separate tool. Great product and value for money.

Like most people, I always looked down on this and other ‘walmart tools’. However, decided to try this edger out and to say the least, I’m impressed! It works quite well giving you a clean edge cut. It is a generic edger whch means it can be used with many string trimmer heads, mine is a Toro.

The only thing against it is that if you edge in wet ground, mud builds up in the guard and can build up until it interferes with the blade. Otherwise it is quite a good tool.

I purchased this edger attachment to accompany my Craftsman 32cc gas trimmer. Easy to use and nice/clean groove along the driveway, curb, and sidewalk. My only disappointment is with the boom assembly (long pole that mates with the trimmer) and the pin that locks into the trimmer pole.

This pin broke loose literally within weeks of the 2 year warranty coming due. The parts were covered BUT labor was not and it took approximately 3 weeks to service. Now roughly 2 years later, the same pin has broken again.

The boom assembly can be purchased for approximately $80 and I can repair it myself OR a new edger attachment assembly runs about the same. Granted it averages out to a cost of about $40 per season. it’s more about the hassle and inconvenience of a poorly designed attachment.

We all know the Craftsman brand continues to plummet (in terms of quality) as the majority of the products are manufactured overseas. I wouldn’t mind paying more for a product that was engineered/manufactured with the quality of the Craftsman products my father and grandfather enjoyed back in the day.

This attachment works great. for 18-24 months. I use the unit once a week during mowing season. I’ll be heading to my local Sears store to purchase a replacement edger attachment assembly. I’m somewhat committed due to the 32cc gas trimmer I purchased; it works great.

Used it right out of box. I have always dreaded edging the curves and reverse walks. This edges the hard turns great. Need to use it on hi. Low actually grabs and pulls you forward some. And I am a big person.

No ropes to pull. No trigger work to keep it running like gas trimmers. No cords to drag. I can weed eat, edge, trim hedges and blow leaves with the same tool. My next attachment is the rototiller.

Excellent, quality attachment for the Milwaukee Power Head. Adjustable height is a good plus, and makes edging easy. Thirty seconds to change from other attachments, and they all get the job done well.

Also have the string trimmer and pole saw.

Compared to the string trmmer attachment, it does not put out enough RPMS like the gas powered edger. Quick attachment is good, changing of blade is also good but my only complaint is the torque speed I am use to.

I thought I could do it with a String Trimmer turned sideways but Nah ! This blade cuts a crisp line with the wheel and split rubber guide and shield in between you and the 8” blade. My new home had high well kept grass by previous owner but it looks like it was never edged and a long border of 6 “ dead grass lying flat on asphalt driveways.

The EGO 5ah 56v Arc Lithium battery gives this edger the power it needs to cut deep if needed. My next pass I might try to angle the blade cut since it’s so precise and accurate.

This is my third Ego tool. I had some problems with battery life on the power head initially, but I determined that it was all due to user error so read your instructions carefully. Otherwise, I am very happy.

I like the concept of being able to add different tools to my power head. I have convinced my brother to abandon his old gas powered tools and join the Ego revolution. This is a great product line with great warranties.

I love the interchangeable battery. I have two batteries and keep one cooking in the charger at all times. I have never had to delay my yard work waiting for a battery. I look forward to being a user of these tools for the foreseeable future.

This is the first edger I have ever owned. The tool is very light and has been able to turn a rather ragged edge to my lawn next to my driveway, sidewalk and road into a well manicured appearance. I use the same battery to run my line trimmer for about 10 minutes, the edger for another 10 minutes, and finally the leaf blower for another few minutes all on a single charge.

This edger is an excellent complement to my EGO tools and mower.

Nice little lawn trimmer. I’ve only used it a few times but ran it about 30-45 minutes straight each time. Haven’t used one of my attachments on it yet but it has a little more power than the last couple of trimmers that I’ve had.

Can’t vouch for the longevity of it, but it can’t be worse than the last two I purchased. (1 Craftsman and one Troy bilt) I really like the way you spool the line on it, somebody should have thought of this a long time ago!.

Power head appears to be brand new. Bump button on trimmer accessory shows ever-so-slight evidence of use. All accessory parts, oil and paperwork included. Packaging virtually shredded; entirely taped together.

I build mountain bike trails, which is hard on weed trimmers. The Ryobi was not up to the task. I’ve used it for less than two weeks, it’s rattling like crazy, and sounds like it is going to fall apart.

Pro: I bought it for ~ $60, normal price around $110. Con: It did not stand up to heavy usage. Definitely not worth $60.

This unit will definitely eat up tall grass and tough weeds not too big in diameter (and a leg or foot in the way, too)! When using to cut big sunflowers with. 25 to. 5 inch stalks it’s quite a job. The motor must be running wide open throttle and (for me) it was best to try to drive the cutting unit thru the stalk with a good swing at it.

If I tried just slowly letting it cut thru the stalk it took forever and would wear me out. I’m working on 2 wire, hotwire fence lines for cattle. A round cutting blade would/will probably be best and much easier for my job.

P. S. I did sharpen the blade unit just a little before beginning with the sunflowers. I’m certain that helped. Not made for rookies and/or low stamina workers. This entire unit is quite heavy.

Great product! I bought this to clear out a large patch of bamboo averaging about 1. 5″ dia. This saw cuts through a stalk of bamboo in just a couple of seconds. The blade which comes with it is good for weeds, vines, etc.

, but nothing larger like the bamboo. I bought some 40T blades which do work great for this. So, be ready to match the blade to the application. This brush cutter does the job.

I dont know how this thing will work fir brush but it works great for weeds. The best part is that it does not fling weeds anywhere. i can do it and come away looking presentable.
