20 Best Valve Lapping Compound (2022 Updated)

I didn’t use this for its intended purpose refinishing valves to seal with the heads of an engine. I used it to help with getting the bolt of a 1928 Remington model 11 shotgun to smooth cycle in a replacement receiver that was built in the early 1920s.

Before using the compound the action wouldn’t freely move back and forth in the receiver. I Placed the compound on the rails which the action moves back and forth on and using a wood dow to move the action back and forth.

After 100-200 times of this the action could be moved by hand only. Removing the compound is a pita but if you don’t you run the risk of wearing out components. The next item i used this compound on was a mag tube extension.

The tube should had just screwed into the guns tube with no problem however it acted like the threads were tight and wouldn’t screw down the whole way. After adding the compound to the threads it help remove just a little bit of the finishing on the threads and allowed the tube to be fully screwed in.

one tube will probably last me forever. This stuff worked for me.

It’s actually a tube of valve grinding compound. I bought this valve grinding compound to sharpen my push reel lawn mower. Applying the compound to the reel blades and rotating the reel backwards with a cordless drill made it an easy process.

The valve grinding compound did its job and the reel and cutting blade was sharp in no time.

I haven’t used valve grinding paste for at least 20 years, and this time it worked much better than I remember. Maybe I was too young and impatient to read and understand the instructions last time. It changes quickly as you use it, from coarse to fine.

Therefore the friction and effort required also changes. Be patient and observant as you work with it.

Did all 16 valves on a pair of Olds 455 C heads. This tube was way more than I needed. I probably used 10% but I also didn’t just glob it all over the place. My valves and heads only had ~1k miles on them though so they weren’t that bad to begin with.

It starts course and I could feel it becoming finer as I ground the valve seats. I used the power drill and rubber tube trick rather than the suction cup on a stick. The results are good and the valve seats look like they are ready for some action.

No complaints.

Coarse grinding compound works fast. Could be a bit thicker paste. Was thinner than I’m used to using resulting in wasted product. Finish was not optimal but it did the job. Great prep for the fine grit lapping compound.

Could have been a little more product for the price.

Despite how much I hate applying this stuff, this is the only stuff that works pretty much every time I put it on a connection unless I forgot to put some in the backside of a thread. This time around, I was trying to seal some couplings to my water heater by using PFTE tape only, but only to have to take it apart again once the connections started leaking.

Instead of using PFTE tape, I just slapped a liberal amount of this goop on the threaded connections and then tighten the connections back up. No leaks! Some people say the connections are stronger when both are being used, but I never really had issues with just using this compound by itself.

Since this sealant does not dry up and stays pretty much goopy at all times, it does get pretty much everywhere (on the connections, on your hands, on your shirt, etc), especially if you applied a liberal amount on the connections.

It has a consistency that is similar to petroleum jelly, so it’s not something that can just be washed off with water (although it does rinse out slightly easier than petroleum jelly would). If you are going to be working with this, make sure you are wearing clothing you do not care too much for.

One good side to this goopiness is that it serves to lubricate the connections so that if you happen to want to undo the connections in the future it does not get frozen or stuck. I think this is a good buy considering that it works every time and that it is also cheaper on Home Essentials Direct compared to what I can get in the local hardware shop.

On par with Hercules “Real Tuff”. High PTFE content. Great for assembling threaded joints on boilers. Great for all water service joints. I have also applied it over pipe joint tape for worn out or problem thread joint situations on water service.

I prefer to use a semi-hardening/sealing type dope instead for volatile materials like fuel oil and gasoline. Leak Lock, Block, Blue Monster HD, True Blu, etc.

Think of this like liquid PFTE (plumber’s) tape, or teflon tape. It seals the gaps between threads on fittings that connect hose and pipe carrying compressed gas. The cap has a brush on the inside. Brush a coat all the way around the threads, spread it evenly, and screw in the fitting and it’s ready to go.

The product itself is messy. It has the consistency of lithium grease mixed with sand. Wear some disposable gloves when you apply it. Unlike PFTE and teflon tape, this stuff fills the gaps between threads very evenly, giving you a superior seal.

It is non-hardening, so it won’t bind the threads – quite the opposite, it acts like a lubricant making the fitting easier to unscrew when you want to take it apart. You’ll want to make sure you spread it evenly all the way around the threads.

If you miss a section, you’ll have a leaky fitting, and if it’s very thin in one spot, it can let air bubble out through the product. If you don’t mind the mess and want the best possible seal, this is a great choice.

I needed a product that would remove light scratches from a knife blade. This polish did not work. I did find a compound that worked and used “Brasso” for a final polish. The two combined worked great.

Good compound for first polish on guitar/bass fretwork. Finer compounds necessary afterwards, but this does a decent job of removing scratches from fret files.

The best if not one of the best polishing compounds out their! I use this to polish all kinds of metal it’s awesome! I would improve this product by putting it in a bigger size lol

It is a very god product, that does the job to my satisfaction. J’d recommend this product to any body rebuilding any petrol engine.

Ideal product for sharpening my mower blades after watching a YouTube video recommended using it, a larger size would be better.

My husband loves this product. Has tried several. Sets his beard up nicely for a shave and decreases irritation.

Nice grit for cleaning off scratches prior to polishing, a great deal and good quality for the price tool, i will buy more in different sizes! Useful for various projects and crafts.

This product seems to be loaded with diamond, as just a little creates a black swarf and sharpens my plane blade effectively. Very pleased.

Excellent diamond paste for first step polishing. I specifically use it for cartridge brass.

Mine came in a much cheaper looking bottle than the one pictured. It came with a screw cap (for transport because they know it leaks) and a flip pouring cap, they’ve clearly bought a dodgy batch of these caps and thought “hey, we’ll ship them anyway!” The label was on wonky like it was made on someone’s kitchen table.

The fluid actually works brilliantly. Like others; I’m sure that if I knew what it was and where to get it, it would probably be pennies.

Bought this to use on my diamond whetstone. Works as expected and I’m happy with results after sharpening my chisels and knives. Would recommend this or a similar quality product when using a diamond stone as wet sharpening gives better results.

It does what it does efficiently…..quite a high price but a bottle lasts for many years – even when sharpening a lot – will buy again but not soon!

It’s pricy, very pricy. I’ve used it to sharpen chisels and a few knives. It doesn’t take much fluid, so it will last awhile. It makes the diamond stone cut smoother and nicer. I’m very happy with the performance.

Oh, it also wipes off cleaner than water and doesn’t create the drag which puts fuzz on the stone which affects performance. For me five star.

Well worth the expence. Will last a long time. Easy to use and NO rust really impressed. Will buy again when running low.

It’s lapping fluid that seems to work better than anything I’ve used to date, although it is quite expensive.

I just breath on the valve a little bit to fog it and the correct suction cup for the valve size works nicely. The rubber is a little stiff, but warm it up just a little and it works great. Your valves also have to have a smooth surface to work.

The 2 gentlemen that helped me so extremely much with all the things I needed and even installed my windshield wipers and a battery in my remote garage. I was confused on what I needed and they helped me so very much to get all that I needed.

I had stopped at a competitor store right before but they didn’t even acknowledge me so I left, what a delight that these 2 wanted to help me. Great work guys you are the best.

I bought this tool because I like Summitt Racing and use them as my primary. But, I can not recommend this product. The suction cups do not stick well. The large one is the only usable one of the group.

It made grinding the exhaust valves a real trial as the smaller cup would detach every 2 seconds or so. I tried everything to assist adhesion, but failed. Sorry product. inferior suction cups.

I had been watching YouTube videos about Lapping Valves, so I used the Loaner Program for the OEMTOOLS 14mm and 18mm Compression Tester Gauge Set. The compression was 100psi out of 130psi, so I bought this Lapper Tool and PerMatex Valve Grinding Compound 1.

5oz for the job. I haven’t used them yet, and while this PerMatex Grinding Compound may not be the brand that was used in those videos, it is made for this and both will be perfect for the job. Very reasonable prices for both and this tool looks exactly like the ones used in the videos with both size suction cups I’ll be removing the Head tomorrow to get started with new Head and Rocker Cover gaskets already purchased.

The suction cups are soft and work, unlike many that you find at the discount tool places and online. Great Tool ! ! !

I couldn’t get the suction to work. I cleaned the bottom of the valves to a s shine. I kept them clean but in the end I used a piece of tape to keep the tool attached to the valve.

suction cups would not stick on valves tried to use the different ends even the ones that were to small could not get them to work ended up making one for my old suction cup.

Molykote 111 is food safe and used for rubber against metal seals. Its expensive but you dont need much so having handy little tin is perfect for domestic use on Coffee machines if you fix machines for a living you probably want a 100mm tube.

I used it rebuilding E61 Group Head. Fantastic.

Absolutely brilliant quality product! Used it on the focusing threads of a rifle scope, now a wonderful butter smooth action. Far superior to Helimax XP and far cheaper too. About the consistency of Vaseline and same colour so stays where it is put with no migration.

Not temperature sensitive either so doesn’t run or thin. I much prefer it to white grease. On fine threads just fill the threads on one surface no more and it will be perfect Lovely stuff to use and well worth the money, the tube will last me for years.

You can thin it with white spirit if needs be too.

Molykote 111 is a good viscous food grade and potable water safe silicone grease. I used it on the threads and O-rings of a sticking steam valve in an espresso machine and it appears to have fixed the problem.

The valve now operates smoothly with no sticking. Based on the experience of other users, Molykote 111 has a multitude of uses including espresso machines, scuba gear, water valves and taps and engine o-rings.

It is not cheap but worth it for the it non-toxic properties.
