20 Best Vintage Car Radio (2022 Updated)

Let’s itemize this. o No cutting required. I installed this in an apartment parking lot away from home and my shop. I am not an experienced mechanic or electrician. o The cables are a *tight* fit in the dash.

There are a lot of options on the various wiring harness cables, most of which I don’t need. I had to cram them in the back wherever they could fit. o I used to have Sirius XM radio. Unless I buy another adapter, I no longer have it.

This radio is not compatible with the existing XM tuner. o You need to hook the new control module up to a laptop to program it through a website. That was my longest delay in installation. It took a while to get the website to install the firmware.

o The cooling fan runs for a couple of minutes after you turn off the vehicle. Not a problem, but it’s different from the stock head unit. o This radio comes with an external GPS antenna and external microphone.

I don’t know how much the GPS antenna helps; I didn’t have a problem with GPS reception on my cell phone before now. Regarding the microphone, people on the other end of my phone calls say that the audio is a little clearer, but fainter.

The included instructions say to mount the microphone behind the mirror, but the included clip doesn’t really work well. The microphone is directional, and the clip does a poor job at aiming it toward then driver.

o I’ve had problems with Android Auto. Occasionally and without any obvious trigger, the Android Auto screen is blank and unresponsive. Once this event triggers, you can’t use the phone through that screen, and you can’t go back to Bluetooth.

The Bluetooth screen says you can’t use it when Android Auto is in play. I have to turn the vehicle off and walk away for a while to reset the problem. This might only be a problem with my unit, but I’m not replacing it with a new unit.

This one was tight enough to install. o I got to keep my steering wheel controls. This was a large part of my decision to purchase this unit. o I installed the OBD connector. It’s neat to see the vehicle information on the dash.

o A lot of the setup menus are hidden behind parking brake protection. You have to set the brake, release it, then set it again in order to access the menus. Overall? This is better than the factory unit.

It’s worth it to get rid of the audio lag the original unit had.

PROS: Large Screen Flexible mounting position Abundance of EQ options CONS: Poor screen resolution Large bezels No volume knob Limited options for customizing the look (few colors & no wallpaper) No wireless Android Auto or Carplay No Bluray/DVD/CD slot I understand that I’ve listed many gripes above, but first and foremost, for me, I needed a receiver that allowed me to customize the sound the way I wanted.

When it comes to that, this radio does it better than any other receiver that’s widely available. It allows you to set volume levels by source, EQ settings by source and speakers, and crossover settings by speaker.

Furthermore, there’s an app that you can also use to make adjustments using your phone. As for the look, I prefer it over a traditional double DIN for my vehicle, because a regular double DIN receiver would have left blank plastic spacers on either side of the radio.

With this unit, most people who’ve rode in the vehicle think it’s stock. It helps that all of the factory functionality has remained, including steering wheel controls and backup camera. However, retaining all factory functions required an additional purchase of a Maestro unit and other components at about $150 extra.

My biggest gripe with the unit is that there’s no volume knob. Prior to my purchase, I didn’t think I’d miss the knob as much, but I was terribly wrong. The bezels around the screen are huge by even 2016 standards.

I feel that Alpine could have certainly put a volume knob in the lower left corner and perhaps a tune/seek knob on the lower right. The touch buttons and steering wheel controls work well enough for what they are, but when you need to make immediate adjustments, they just can’t compare to the knobs that most of us have become accustomed to.

My other major complaint is the shameful screen resolution. In this day and age where 5 and 6 inch mobile phones have 1080p screens or better, the 480p resolution on this 9 inch screen is dreadful by comparison.

On many screens and menus, the resolution won’t be much of an issue, however anytime there’s smaller print or fine details displayed, the pitifully low resolution becomes obvious. It should also be noted that this radio is very restrictive about the adjustments you’re allowed to make unless you have applied the parking brake.

You can’t even enter the settings menu without applying the parking brake! I understand locking out video while driving, but Alpine has gone overboard here. Fortunately, there are ways around this restriction, but I’ll leave you to your Googles to find them.

I will say that the solution was very easy, cheap and effective. Both Apple Carplay and Android Auto work, but unfortunately they’re not wireless. It should be noted that if using either of these, the radio disables Bluetooth.

So if I have one phone connected via Bluetooth and I subsequently connect my other phone via Carplay/Android Auto, the Bluetooth connection is immediately dropped. Research seems to indicate that this is a restriction implemented by Apple and Google.

So I can’t fault Alpine here. All in all, the radio is just OK for the money. Alpine has a cheaper model, the ILX-207, that has almost the exact same functionality as this ILX-F309. It’s only a 7 inch screen, but you may prefer it as the resolution doesn’t look as bad on the smaller display.

My advice is to get the cheaper one. I do like the innovative thinking with this 9 inch floating display; hopefully Alpine will improve on this idea. If they can correct the major issues, I’ll certainly be looking to upgrade.

Great install videos on line. really helped. Installed this with backup camera at the same time. Took longer than advertised but did this with my daughter too. she did great routing wires, etc! Tight fit behind the head unit with the Maestro harness etc.

keep that Maestron on top of the headunit and oriented correctly. will help. I made two errors initially. put a 4 pin connector in wrong area of the Maestro which resulted in steering wheel volume controls etc not to work.

I also put a small harness connection back in the wrong area on the rear of the hazzards/button panel resulted in hazards not working. After thinking through the problem, freeze framing some videos. we diagnosed the problem(s) and now we are up and running very well.

good reception. LOTS and LOTS of options for audio. love the display/color options too. Sounds better than standard. especially with the various equalizer settings. Apple CarPlay works perfectly!. No problem with iphone calls from the steering wheel.

Easy to hear driver on the phone too (i. e. hearing/receiving calls from the jeep). placed the microphone per video on the rearview mirror. PERFECT fit in the dash. should have been there all along. My only concern.

hope it doesn’t get wet. I know the larger upgraded version has better water protection. Very glad we put this in. but certainly $$$.

My other Sirius receiver stopped working, but it was over 10 years old! PROs: I picked this model for price. Navigation is easy, not too large. And it fit in my existing dock in my car. They kept the same connectors.

I had to download the manual, so I knew what features it offered. For example saving favorites or manually keying in the channel number. CONs: Despite the fact that it fit in my old dock, the power cord end is different from my previous model, so when I put it in the current dock in my car, it wouldn’t power on! that was a bummer so I have to power it via my cigarette lighter and the power cord it came with, even though I had the previous one professionally installed so I didn’t have to have cords hanging from unit to cigarette lighter.

I think I’m going to splice the cords, so I don’t have to run it from my cigarette lighter. screen color/font isn’t very exciting, kind of simple and the font is small. This model does not have a remote and you can only save 10 channels with the numbers along the bottom.

My last receiver I could save 30 channels.

Good Satellite receiver for older vehicle. Quality product only weak point is the FM transmitter. For my vehicle there are limited adapter modules for the FM. Works well but on long trips certain FM frequencies encounter interference.

Sirius Customer Service could use some improvement.

Great device. Works exactly as described. Portable & allows you to plug into speaker doc, or a home kit attached to your stereo or even to a vehicle radio system such as an older vehicle to receive satellite signal for Sirius xm Radio.

Great device used to receive signal in lieu of using internet.

This set of radio and speakers are a match made in heaven. The radio alone provides not only what you want but also gives you what you need in a modern day stereo system. Especially if you have an older car like me, the appreciation of a radio that includes both bluetooth phone and music, along with the choice of personalization of the color it is to complement its chic design is much greater.

In turn, if you have this radio it will make you a more grateful person because every time you get in your car you are reminded of the days when all you had access to was the radio to listen to through your busted speakers.

It will make you realize just how much more convenient it is to be able to enjoy your own music, whatever that is, while you drive. Along with that, this radio keeps you safer because of the bluetooth phone setting.

The accessiblity to answer your phone and being able to change songs through the radio prevents you from ever having to be that driver that is distracted by their phone. The speakers that come with this radio, complement it so incredibly well with the crisp and clear sounds that are accompanied by the prominent bass.

The sound system is completed by the speakers because it fearlessly projects the sounds that you get to freely choose to come out of them. I am rating this product with four stars because if the speakers were just a couple of inches bigger then they would be able to let through more bass, however it depends on the size that your car will allow to accommodate them.

What a really good deal for previous owners of a Pioneer car stereo system that has issues! The guts and brains of the system are what makes it all work, but of course you have to have the face plate that puts it all together.

This item is just what I was looking or when my system bit the big one. Amp Error was the message, I think. Anyway, I truly was pleasantly surprised that this item fit my needs exactly and saved me money as well.

I use my car stereo on my lanai (back porch for those who don’t know what a lanai is) with a AC/DC converter so if I lose power, I can hook up a 12 Volt battery and still have tunes! Car stereos last better outside as I’ve tried home stereos outside with terrible results.

They last about a month or two and start crackling and having issues. car stereos in an outside, but covered environment work for years! OK, I digress. my main point is that this item works great, replaced my dying/dead stereo and let me enjoy my outside room as it was intended.

Bought for our caravan which had the speakers & wiring but no radio. Easy to fit – just connected the plugs and aerial. Sound is good. Operation is easy. It’s not flash, but it’s Pioneer and it’s good.

Hadn’t realised the front panel detaches, which is a nice added bonus, and the unit comes with a strong plastic carry case for the panel.

I purchased this stereo for an older (1987!!) Ford E350 RV. I ended up also purchasing an install kit for the frame as the RV had a previously installed aftermarket radio that removed the original mounting hardware.

The stereo has a nice clip in the back to make splicing into your existing wiring easy. One note, the wires are really small, indicating the need for an amp if plan on putting much power through the wires.

The stereo has a lot of nice features and I would give it five stars, if it wasn’t for the clumsy menu just to get to the audio controls. This is not something I think I would try while driving. There is one small button on the lower right that gets you into the menu, and then you use the left (only) knob to scroll through and make selections.

It comes with the microphone input with a nice long lead. It’s long enough that even for the E350, I was able to run it across the dash, up the pillar and to the top middle of the windshield without having to splice, and there is still a little wire left.

Sound is decent, I can’t say for sure how good as the speakers in the RV are not exactly current technology but it sounds good. There is an option to set your speaker size for the front and rear speakers.

What this does, no idea. There are also options for the amplifier and subwoofer setups, which I am not using. The instructions are pretty straight forward and once I used the mounting kit, it fits in the opening nicely.

this radio is the biggest piece of junk i have bought. i am running a kenwood 3600 amp and a 4 channel 1200 watt amp. everytime i turn the radio up it cuts out i loose everything. i have to turn it off and back on again.

then it cuts out. i never had this problem with my kenwood. i called bestbuy ask them they could not answer me. i am taking this jvc out and putting my kenwood back in. if you want a radio to pound hard dont use this jvc.

Great replacement radio! Bought it for the Bluetooth but also really like the Alexa, Spotify, c/m options as well. Works great. Installation was a little tough but mainly because of the car we put it in.

Make sure you have the correct wiring harness when you buy this. Go ahead and get the one from the store and don’t assume the wine already in the car will work!.

Boss is a good name brand, I have boss 6. 5 speakers in my Subaru and use this radio with it. Bluetooth connects good unless you have your Bluetooth off when you start the car youll have to shut your ignition off to make it reconnect but after that works super good! The clock resets all the time but you can easily turn it off, sound settings never reset.

For FM it does a good job picking up on radio stations, presets are easy to save. Highly recommend this radio if you have an older car that you want to bring up to date without spending a lot of money.

I am unable to comment on the operation of this product since it does not work properly after carefully following the installation instructions that came with it. I have contacted the manufacturer about this issue, and I will first have to reinstall the product and then call them so that they can troubleshoot the issue by phone.

The only output that I get from this product is “AM 1600 Goodbye”. This is very frustrating since I followed every detail on wiring schematic and I have an electrical background, so this was not anticipated at all.

I may have to return the item.

The sound quality is not great, but totally works fine and for the price, it’s a good deal. I installed it in my partner’s car; she mainly listens to podcasts, and for that purpose, it’s just fine. It’s a big improvement over the little FM antenna bluetooth thingy she was using before.

Main complaint is that the display is impossible to see in any amount of daylight, even on the brightest setting. The unit is very simple in operation, so once you get your phone connected, you don’t really need to see the screen.

Overall, a really good deal for the incredibly cheap price.

This radio is amazing and works perfectly. It was very light weight, the installation for it was simple and the sound quality was great. The features for the radio all work perfectly as well. Would defiinently recommend to anyone that wants this.

Replaced the radio in my motor home and added SiriusXM. This unit has a remote making it easy to operate while driving the big rig. Just wish it had Bluetooth.

Good stereo for the money, The biggest deal breaker is the display. I bought it for the xm radio and the display only will show one detail. If you want the clock or the station or song title or band name etc all of those can only be seen one at a time by pushing a button.

Very simple cheap Bluetooth radio. Good sound and easy to wire up, only thing I’d add is a middle tone adjustment and a dedicated subwoofer output with its own volume control but in my classic jeep it looks perfect!.

This is a nice little cheapo bluetooth radio, i have a pyle bluetooth radio that i replaced with this one and so far everything is much better. The bluetooth is better, the sound quality is better and the volume is way better.

Before i could only head a little bit and now its so loud that i have to adjust the bass cause my speakers aparently cant handle bass lol.

This was an easy install. Great sound. Awesome price. Great appearance. Excellent customer service. Looks great in my 1971 Ford Torino.

Doesn’t fit properly, the fake nobs that go on before the controll nobs doesn’t allow control nobs to function properly. So i left those off. All control buttons are loose, not firm like i expected. I also thought it was made in USA.

But was only engineered in USA, that did not make me happy. It works and looks ok, but I expected a better quality made stereo.

This stereo looks like it came from the factory in 1955 ! Attention to detail on knobs / face is outstanding. I mounted the mini, single CD player in my glove box. The CD player is controlled from the in-dash AM/FM stereo radio ( which makes things easier ).

I also like the built-in USB cable for playing music stored from my computer. I really appreciate the compact size which helps make the installation easier. Sounds great & I have not encountered any problems at all.

Haven’t Purchased a New Stereo in over 15 Years. Alot has Changed from back in the day’s. I Needed a Stereo with Bluetooth, USB and CD. After doing my research Sony had the best Options in a car stereo and within my budget.

This is my First Sony Headunit. Still getting use to the functions tweaking the sound settings. But other then that this unit is a Good unit to buy. It has everything you need. The x-bass on this unit can be at little too much if that’s what your into.

But it’s easy to turn off. I like that the Volume goes higher then other stereo’s that only go up to 35. But I do recommend this stereo to anyone that is looking for the same options I was looking for and price wise can’t beat it.

Yes there is cheaper radios out there but you do notice the sound difference between a brand like Sony vs a Dual or whatever cheaper brand you compare it too. So do yourself a favor and spend the extra money on a better quality stereo.

I like how much easier to use this Sony than the last one I owned. It doesn’t have more than the blue color lights which is fine with me. The bass boost feature works pretty well and this unit was installed with new Pioneer speakers in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Bluetooth doesn’t work well with my Android phone but I have no problem using a cord to plug it into the stereo. I have to say the sound is incredible. If you want Bluetooth and have an Android you might want to buy something else.

You will need a small USB drive to get your firmware updates from your PC and plug it into your USB port on the stereo. The buttons on the front are small so it comes with a remote. That I wish was different.

You can’t be driving down the road playing with a remote. For the price it was a good deal though.

Bought this for my wife’s car Sound is great and with the multiple sources However the Bluetooth fails to reconnect on both my iPhone and my wife’s (Iphone6 IOS 11). Usually having to run pairing again The app is also quite good but annoyingly asks to be allowed to communicate with the unit every time the ignition is switch off In summary the unit requires a lot of phone intervention which is dangerous whilst driving.

You will end up having to stop to set up your music. not ideal So please Sony sort out the connection and make the app automatically connect to the unit. Make everything accessible on the unit so that I don’t have to touch my phone Make it less dangerous.

Does not do what is says it will do. The ad clearly states this will “retain steering wheel controls and onstarâ€. It does not. The stereo itself is nice but the installation kit/witing harness foes not include the additional modules needed for these functions.

I had to go out and spend another $40 just for the steering wheel controls to work. Also, the wiring harness they sent would need to be repinned in order to line up with my vehicles factory wiring. (The listing clearly shows my year/make and model vehicle in thei compatibility list.

I will be contacting the seller for reimbursement. Beware of these issues if you decide to buy.

I bought this stereo a couple months ago for my 2012 F150 and its been a pretty good unit so far. Sound is good! Hooked up 2 polk audio amps and 2 polk audio 8” subs off it and its puts out some good sound and bass.

My only issue is it takes abit for the bluetooth to connect to my iphone for music playback, other then that I’m pretty happy with it.

The stereo is great. It works perfectly! Very easy to install and use. The only complaint I have are that the buttons are very small so when you’re driving it’s difficult to just tap a button.

Works great as a replacement for my factory radio. Cost was good and installation was easy.

Let me start by saying that, for fairly inexpensive of a purchase price, the features are decent. I like that it offers both SD card and USB inputs. Using that feature isn’t too tough, aside from the comments below about the buttons/icons.

The tuner leaves MUCH to be desired- local stations that came in excellent on my old head unit (and all other head units I’ve used in this area) do not come in well at all. Distance stations aren’t much better.

There is a menu selection for Local/Distant, but it makes no real difference. The large volume knob was a key driver for me, knowing that I wanted USB or SD playback as a primary, then having a simple, fast volume control was another key driver.

Unfortunately, they went with form over function, so there is no knurling or texture to make this shallow knob easy to turn, especially with even thin gloves on. Trying to adjust without looking can often result in pressing the button in, which activates the menu and results in fade or balance changes.

Other times your finger can hit one of the surrounding buttons. That same form over function mentality exists with the icons. In the electric blue color and with their very small size, they can be difficult to read at night, as the glow overpowers the small image without a more careful look.

All in all, not bad, but this unit definitely puts design before performance, and does not allow you to get comfortable with blind button presses, etc. The remote won’t reward with ergonomics, either, as it is thin, flat and shaped the same in both directions.

You don’t know which way it is pointing in the dark without a careful look. The buttons are the same thin dimple shape, so there is no tactile or muscle memory that can be built with experience.

I desired a replacement car radio when the factory radio died and did not want to spend a great deal on a head unit. Researching extensively, I came across this decent looking radio and as it did not have a CD player, (no need), I felt this was a good fit to my digital needs.

It fit into a empty dash bay in my 1994 Voyager van smartly and the connections were straight forward, feeding into the onboard Chrysler amp and producing good sound with heavy decent bass. But, there are problems.

The signal capture of the tuner is weak. Normally strong FM stations, fight to come in clear, fading. and the AM band. is practically non-existent. I’m contemplating installing a signal amp in-line to the antenna to help with this.

The SD card reading is a bit slow, but delivers well. It has a random play option, but that takes abnormally long, (at least 7 seconds while it searches and plays). The intro option is nice and plays about 5 seconds of the song before going to the next, but again slow.

The Aux-in works well with computer, tablet and MP3 player. The USB port also works well, but a bit slow as well. For the price, it’s a good radio, but this is no screamer. I will replace it sometime with a upgrade unit.

something a bit faster and snappier, but for now. it’s just ok – barely.

The car I recently bought had an aftermarket stereo installed, but it didn’t work. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a radio for my old car, I just wanted a cheap radio. I did a lot of reaserch before I found this one.

Most of the radios I found for this price range had terrible reviews. I took a chance on this one because it had mostly good reviews. I have to say I installed it in just a few minutes and it works great.

I love the SD card slot and the fact that it plays Windows Media Files, A lot of the ones I was looking at only played MP3 files. I think the only thing I have found anoying is that there is not a seek on the tuner.

TO get to the channel you want you have to go through them one at a time. IT does however have a large amount of presets to save your favorite stations then all you have to do is press a button to go to your favorites.

I have had this installed for about three weeks and think it has been better than any other radio I have bought for much higher prices. I would deffinately recommend this to others.

This radio is easy to setup, and everything works as described. The only thing I miss is that settings are stored even when the power is completely disconnected (also power for memory), but it is actually not a problem in my caravan without its own battery.

You can’t get any more bang for your buck. If you drive anything that’s not a Toyota with 6 inch fart can mufflers and a radio that flexes the windows on bass notes than this is the radio for all us normal, sane drivers.

I was not happy with this radio at all and worse part about it was that I could not even get it mounted in the stock holes in my STOCK dashboard in my 1970 Chevelle SS 396. First, the instructions are really lacking as far as installing the radio.

There are more instructions on taking out your old radio as opposed to installing the new one. The mounting strap was a bit too short, it did not reach the stud in back of the radio. They advertise that there is no need for modifications, I disagree.

This company portrays itself as an American company, but when you open the package, it is MADE IN CHINA!! All in all, a total nightmare. Now for the good. There was a customer service rep named Trisha, who was the only bright star in this whole thing.

She returned my calls promptly and did everything she possibly could do to try to pull me through this mess.

After two months the radio will not shut off, but just keeps searching and doesn’t allow volume control if attempts to do so are made. After contacting the manufacture I was advised to disconnect the power for 10 minutes and then reconnect.

no change. Subsequent attempts to contact the manufacture proved fruitless.

I like the radio, I was not happy about the 10% sale that a couple days after my purchase. I reach out to customer service about a credit and got no response. I have a similar stereo in my 79 and the back light is bright green and makes it hard to drive at night, trying to decide if I have to buy a new one for it – the back lighting on my new one is all good.

I had this unit installed in my 1979 Corvette with the slimline CD player. I also had the sound bar speaker installed in the rear. This gives my dash a fresh new look while keeping a vintage look. The power is good for factory standards.

If you want added power you may want to add an amp. This is an excellent product for your vintage vehicle.

Very nice sound, looks great! Attaching the back to the dash is tricky because dash is curved. But a 5 star product.

Bought this for my 1969 C10 pickup. Great fit, classic looks, and a very simple install. Sounds great going down the road.

This product did not fit the OEM radio hole as advertised! There were no installation instructions! The face and the cover pieces were cheap flimsy chromed and black plastic. I returned the product for a refund.

3 starts being the average of 5 and 1 star. Installation was easy unless you are under the dash of a ’57 Thunderbird with under-the-dash A/C. The speaker was impossible. 5 stars for the FM reception.

Disappointing 1-2 stars for the AM reception, which is better, I suppose than the old Custom Audio where the AM didn’t work, reason for the new one. Local stations are weak.

Easy Install. It comes with everything you need. I extended the yellow constant wire to the battery positive and the Red to the ignition switch post. I paired this with Scott Drake speakers and the sound came on right away.

This does not have bluetooth but does have a Aux plug for your phone.

A good look on the dash, and was surprised to have the 55 Chevy knobs, they could have cut corners and just put any plain knobs, Im happy with it.

Das nervt sehr. Nochmehr nervt da man dann wiederum um Wieder DAB zu hren oben Links den Knopf 5mal drcken muss um auf DAB zu kommen. Ich bin es gewohnt hier garnichts zu drcken. Wenn ich vom Handy was abspiele dann funktioniert dass immer automatisch und vorrangig zum Radio und anschlieend dudelt das Radio weiter.

Beim JVC nur mit Knpfchen drcken. Wie alle Bluethoothaudioaugabegerte fehlt dem ganzen auch ein Lautstrkepegel: mein Ohr ist immer das gleiche, aber ob ich Radio hre oder WhatsApp oder Youtube muss ich jedes mal die Lautstrke anpassen.

Meiner Meinung nach sollte dass 2022 schon lngst mal jemand behoben haben. Das kann ja kein Hexenwerk sein. Aussehen, Telefonie und Klang ist gut. Von mir jedoch wegen dem verfehlten Ziel keine Kaufempfehlung.

Telefonie klappt auch gut und ist beidseits tip top verständlich. Einzig einen Übergangsstecker/Adapter für UKW muss ich mir eventuell noch besorgen.
