20 Best Violin E String (2022 Updated)

I bought the Dominant Violin e2 130 steel core, aluminum wound string today and went to put it on my violin. I didn’t even try to tighten the string and it snapped. These strings are not cheap at $20.

00 for the e-string so I expected it to be somewhat better than the Vision which is sold at $8. 00. Expensive piece of rubbish. Unfortunately I can’t give it less than a 1 star because it doesn’t even merit that given that I couldn’t even try it out.

These are fakes. Packaging could not be more authentic in appearance; rarely do you see Chinese knock-offs that look this genuine. Careful examination of the contents reveals the truth. When compared to genuine Dominants, these are obviously steel-cored, as there is no synthetic material showing at the ball ends or peg ends, and, unlike Dominants, they are quite stiff at both ends.

When measured with a micrometer, there are noticeable differences in the diameters. German strings coming from China at half the price? Gee.

I bought this for my daughter’s violine. Very affordable compared to other sites that sold the same brand. It was very easy to fix, and sounds good too.

I recently had my violin repaired and serviced and the old strings were replaced with Tonica strings. These strings did not suit my violin and they sounded hollow. I changed back to Dominant strings and it now sounds like a whole different instrument with so much more warmth.

You need to experiment with strings and your instrument and playing style to get the right match for you.

When I opened the package, The E string pack looked different from the rest of the packs as shown in the picture. I installed it last week and my daughter missed her violin lesson due to the E string broke while she was doing her morning practice.

This is the first time happened to me with dominant violin strings. I have no choice than to install back the old E string which I kept until I can buy a brand new E string.

Theses are really nice strings. They have a great acoustic sound and are the best strings I have ever used. I get a good 8 months of playing between practicing and playing out a couple times a week. I think they sound better than any other string when I am using a pickup too.

My fiddle stays in tune. The only time they seems to waver is when it’s cold, it tends to go out of tune more frequently. I suppose any string would do that.

I popped the D string on my full size violin a while ago. My Dad surprised me and ordered this 4 pack of strings for me so that I could have a fully strung violin again, even though I dont play as often as I used to.

Id say its a pretty standard string. Im not playing professionally or even with any sort of group at the moment, so I dont necessarily need the best string on the market. It has a good tone to it, was easy to string and tune and sounds good when I play it.

I think the cost of these is perfect for what youre getting. Plus, having the 4 pack gives you a sense of backup relief, just in case some other strings break. Which is exactly what happened as I was putting my new string on! My fiance also has a violin and brought it out to tune it along with mine.

He ended up breaking his E string during tuning. Good thing we had a spare!The price is there, the quality is there, the ease of use is there, theres really no negative thing to say about these strings.

If you know how to use them, these are great replacement strings.

They are OK, I clicked on these by mistake but decided to try them. Beware – they do NOT have the tube on the E string, so if you do not have parchment or an ebony insert on your bridge there will likely be a problem.

The tube protects the string from breaking due to friction from the wood fibers, and the bridge from being cut bu the thin string. Since the tubes seem to be a pretty standard part, I never thought to save any when changing strings.

I have had one break at the bridge already after just a few weeks. Maybe thats why they include a spare E with the set.

I ordered full size violin strings for my daughters violin. I really like that the envelope that they come in is really small so that they dont take up much space in her violin case. Usually when you order full size strings from other companies the envelopes are bigger so when I saw what came in the mail here I worried at first, by the size of the envelope, that they sent the wrong size strings but then I took one out and measured it and it definitely was a full size string.

I thought this is so great! The strings dont take up much space in her case! They are great strings too!.

These strings are superb for this price! When first introduced they were somewhere above £50. I use 3 or 4 different fiddles for my teaching/playing, and although I would love to use something like Evah Perazzi or Obligato I just cant justify the difference in price.

These strings work really well on both a very old 1700’S fiddle right through to my bridge electric. Really warm tone with plenty power low down. Stay in tune well. I don’t always use the Tonica e string as I normally use pirastro number one, which is a great sweet e , loads of power too.

I recommend them to all my students.

I have been playing on old steel strings for way too long. The change was very dramatic. The Tonicas are thinner and more flexible, so they are easier to play, and the sound is warmer. There is a little less projection, but not too much less.

I do feel that violin strings could be less expensive and still be profitable, though.

I watched/listened to a video on YouTube by the owner of White Horse Music in Australia comparing several violin strings on the same violin. The Pirastro Tonica is one of his favorites–puts them on nearly all of the violins he sells.

When he demo’d this string, he brought to your attention how it rings out even after you draw the bow over it and lift it off. And, it does! It’s a beautiful sounding string and great for the price. I’m not a professional and was away from playing for about 40 years so I am not experienced at all about strings.

But, I have been playing a lot in an orchestra for the past 7 years and love how this string responds as compared to the Dominant strings I was using. I haven’t been able to tell yet whether they are “soft on the fingers” as he said because I’ve been playing way more than usual lately for a musical and fingers are a bit sore right now, but that is one reason I decided to try them.

I can’t wait to get a whole set but might get a different E string as some people suggest.

Ascente strings are very good value. Although they use a monel alloy winding on the D and G, this seems to be a very good substitute for silver/aluminium and produces good tone (on the A, the usual aluminium is used).

Moreover, the strings seem to last well. Recommended as an “economy” but good quality string.

Good strings. They are not as loud as other strings can be. I noticed something about them, I think the ascente strings are good at bringing out the natural sound of the violin they are on. They are soft and feel good on the fingers.

I recommend replacing the E string with another, but it will work. They hold tune really well. Seems like not as much tension is needed to bring them into tune.

I don’t want to raise anyone’s expectations, but personally, the quality of these strings is amazing. They produce a beautiful sound,the e string DOESN’T squeak (as promised) and most importantly, they are versatile.

I used a cheap old abused bow (which I last applied rosin to probably about a year ago) on these strings, and they didn’t fail to hide all of the defects of my bow by themselves. At least from my point of view, these strings are amazing.

It was definitely worth my time and money.

Would return if allowed for defective item but can’t find any options for returns. Seriously snapped after one day of use. Not sure it all strings from this brand are bad but this one certainly was. Very disappointed.

the strings seem to be very good at unraveling. Maybe they just weren’t the right ones for the violin I am using. However, it looks like I will have to buy some better ones. I advise, after this experience, to just spend the extra money and get some strings you know will last quite a few years.

still, perhaps it’s my violin that’s messed up not the strings.

I only needed to replace my G string & I thought I was going to have to buy a whole set of strings. I was relieved that Musicians Friend sells individual strings packaged for replacements. Thank you!

I purchased this strings for a family member’s violin (they are just beginning) as they asked me what strings I would recommend. They exceeded my expectations for beginner strings (as I remember the awful beginner strings I played on when I was first starting out) that I am now putting them on my own electric violin.

These strings have a very sweet sound that makes them very easy to play and may help with harsh tones and squeaks that are common with beginners and student quality violins. These are synthetic core strings (with the exception of the E which is steel) which is an excellent step up as this is what most intermediate and professional level violinists are playing with.

However, like synthetic core strings they do tend to stretch significantly for about a week or so. These strings are not like D’Addario synthetic core strings that have very quick (only a few days) of significant stretching.

I built a violin and installed these strings. I play this violin like a cello, It even has a stand that supports it while I play. I’m new to violins, and I’ve been learning that both the bow and the type of resin affect how one sounds.

I’m trying to produce a sound without scratches or other distractions. I seem to be improving. I can’t comment on tone of strings, as the only basis for comparison I have is one I built with pine board for the soundboard.

Completely different design. Tuned that one to GCEA and play with a Bach bow like a ukkulele. Sounded like a harmonica. I built another Back bow for this one, but doubt that I’ll be tuning it down to GCEA.

Trying to learn to play romantically. This sounds, I’ll say, okay. Of course, how much is the strings and how much is the violin design?.

I think these are the best sounding strings in it’s price range! They sound good and even helps beginner instruments sound better. I think these last a while and not bad for teaching. It may not be a powerhouse like Evah Pirazzi or Peter Infeld, but for practicing and teaching, I’m pretty happy with it.

I think I even prefer these over Dominants.

Unfortunately the strings cannot be used. My daughter, a high-school freshman at UNC School of the Arts, tried them on her violin, but only the E string works and can be tuned. The other strings are impossible to control, and her teachers also agreed that they should be changed with a different product.

I hope we can change them.

Really appreciate the Johnson included the extra Gold Label E with the string set. This string has such a warm and clear tone!

This is perfect. Balanced string between my and and D with maximum resonance. So much better than the current trend for a match C and G. Thank you Gary Davis.

Dominant Solo’s are a rich toned solo string. Easy on the Bow – easy to Bow – with a slightly retro sound. This string is too dark for a contemporary sound. Designed to cut through the sounds of the orchestra, I actually detune mine to orchestral tuning – E A D G not F#, B, E, A.

This gives me a looser easy to handle string. This string is good for both Arco and Pizz – again, if you like an older almost gut like sound, these should work. All in all an easy string, but also a quiet string.

Replaced the one we managed to break and sound is good with very little creep after fitting

The Dominant E is a good product at a good price. Its playability seems unaffected by the wearing of the plating. Its response is as good as any E string that I’ve tried, and I’ve tried a lot of them.

At that price, it’s worth a try.

I have had Thomastik’s Violin-Saite Dominant strings on my violin for over 15 years now. I love their rich, mellow sound, definitely my favorite strings in this price range. Last week, my A string snapped while tuning, which is hardly surprising given that they’re several years old.

The description says they should be change at “appropriate intervals. ” I am not sure exactly how long is considered appropriate; however, I didn’t notice any appreciable change in sound quality or intonation in the time they have been on my violin.

I do clean my strings thoroughly after playing and have dry hands in general, which seems to help with longevity. The strings hold tuning well and are responsive. Overall, they are a very good value with a fantastic sound.

I was really excited to get this cello. I found it difficult at first as the lack of neck to guide you into higher positions meant shifting was difficult. I don’t think the little pin at the back of the neck is adequate.

I got used to that though and loved the tone of the instrument. However I couldn’t find a comfortable playing position. The brace for wearing the cello is obviously made for men and does not suit female players.

The alternative tripod is unstable and makes the cello unruly. The cello moves with you so that pitching is extremely hap-hazard. Having had this cello for a month I started developing back problems and didn’t realise the cause at first until it had developed into debilitating pain.

Basically the angle of this cello gave me a twisted pelvis that has taken a lot of physiotherapy and I’ve needed sessions with chiropractors to straighten myself out again. Needless to say I would not recommend this instrument.

I’ve had my violin strings since last year and they haven’t fail me yet. I’ve been playing the violin for 2 years now and the original strings weren’t nearly as good as the ones I have on now. The notes seem higher and strings seem tougher but I dont play my violin everyday though just whenever the mood strikes me or I’m feeling stressed or just plain boredom.

These type of strings were very pricey, but then that could be the norm. I really do love the sound that these strings make. When I am really into whatever song I’m playing, the music just sounds so wonderful.

I usually use and purchase Red Label strings for my violin- more so because it is the cheapest brand but also reliable so I saw no reason to switch. I recently needed to buy new strings and the only ones available at the time were the D’addario brand- didn’t see a reason not to at least try these out.

So far, I really like them because they are sturdier and (in my head) I get a stronger sound. I will for sure buy these again. Thanks to the Sam Ash employees in the Richmond area for continuously being awesome.

I am a beginning violin student so my opinion shouldn’t carry to much weight yet but I got these strings on the suggestion of some YouTube online teachers who said they were decent for the price. I’m currently playing a very inexpensive student violin so it makes sense not to purchase strings that are more expensive than the instrument.

That said, the strings do sound and feel much better than the ones that came on the violin and for the price they seem like a good deal. I will buy these again.

Wonderful mello sound on all strings. The strings require a much lower finger pressure and less bow pressure to use. The sound intensity is still more than enough for most settings but not enough for hall like the BSO.

Excellent pitch stability after a week of settling.

I play a 5-string violin. This is an excellent match to go along with the Dominant 4 string violin set.

The E string’s quality seems in line with the other three strings on my student-grade violin. Any string stretches at first and needs to be tuned several times before it stays in tune. Now that I’ve done that, it performs just fine.

I have no complaint.

You always tune a violins A string first. So that means to me it’s most important to get that one correct. Can’t do that if you don’t put a good quality A string on to start with. It’s easier to tune the other strings to where they should be if you start off on the right string.

D’Addario are my favorite strings for all levels. Honestly, if a student can afford the Helicore it’s better, but most my beginners buy Prelude. I discovered the Kaplan (profeasional/soloist level) about 12 years ago and that’s all I use for my personal instruments ever since.

D’Addario strings are Made in USA and of great quality with a very affordable price for what it is. Also, the moment I started using the Kaplan on my cello, all my intonation issues were gone like magic!.

Great product at a great price. We did a lot of research and together with the knowledgeable salesperson at Sam Ash I think we made the right choice for a beginner violin with a nice sound and easy to use.

My son who already plays piano and guitar and is very musical is enjoying his new instrument immensely.
