20 Best Vise For Workbench (2022 Updated)

Good strong vice. I was pleased with design of the rotational feature. Ive owned other vices where the two side bolts work against a single center pivot bolt which eventually breaks, always. This has a machined round base which the machined upper portion sits into, then a cross bar spans the base.

The two side bolts go through the machined upper portion into the cross bar, clamping onto the inside of the circular machined base. Hard to describe, but i dont think it will have a catastrophic failure like the other design.

It’s a repairable design.

If you do your research you’ll see that the vise described and pictured here is actually not sold any more by Irwin. In fact, I can’t really tell when it was sold, the models seem to evolve over the years.

The vise I received DID match the model number (226306) which is, according to the box, a 6″ Irwin “Record Series” workshop vise, which is an interesting combination of three of their lines. Home Essentials Direct offered to take it back but the vise actually had some better features than the one pictured and it does exactly what I need it to do so I kept it.

About the vise I received, the throat depth is 3 3/8″, the useable capacity measures 5. 5″ (meaning space between the open jaws) and the overall length, closed, is about 14″. It has the fully machined bearing surfaces which is a nice feature, unlike the vise pictured.

The action is very smooth and the jaw stays nicely level and even as it moves in and out. I feel like I have good control over the pressure that is exerted. So, I am giving it four stars only because I still can’t figure out what unicorn model number this thing is.

It’s actually a better vise than what is pictured but the specs provided here are not accurate at all. Feel free to reply/comment if you have questions or want other measurements. *4/28/19 Update* Looks like the pictures and product description are now correct.

I’ll go up to 5 stars, been very happy with this product.

I just recieved this vise today, so I can’t comment on it’s durability. As others have said, it doesn’t look like the one pictured, that was a pleasant suprise that I was hoping for. The moveable jaw of my previous vise was sloppy and the screw had a lot of backlash.

This one seems to be much more rigid. The jaws maintain their alignment, and open and close with minimal movement of the screw. Also, the rotating/ locking mechanism has a serrated ring, rather than a smooth ring, enabling it to be locked in position with little effort.

In retrospect, I probably should have bought one with a deeper throat capacity, I’ve needed that in the past. A “good” vise costs upward of $200, but this seems to be a good value for the money. This should be fine for my purposes, fabricating/repairing things at home.

If I happen to find fault with it down the road, I will revise this review. Here it is, over two years later. still happy with this vise. I’ve beat on it, used “cheaters” to over-tighten the jaws. hasn’t failed.

I don’t understand all the great reviews on this. It’s not a good vise and it’s rare when I use it that I don’t regret buying it and wish I’d bought a better one. Issues: 1. It doesn’t stay parallel to bench edge when you tighten something in it that is shorter than the full width of the vise.

It will skew. So if you clamp a workpiece on the right of the threaded rod, then it will pull the front of the vise towards the bench on the left, so you don’t get a flat clamping force on your workpiece.

Result is poor clamping and potential damage to workpiece because its concentrating the clamping force. 2. The quick release mechanism is prone to slipping, so sudden loss of clamping force happens reasonably regularly, especially if you’re doing anything like sawing while clamping a workpiece (where motion is back and forth) Do yourself a favor and don’t ruin your workbench and shop time with this poorly designed product.

If you already know how to install this vice, including figuring out the quick release without help, then this is a great tool. Sturdy and does what it is supposed to once the mechanism kicks in. For me the lack of any instructions, diagrams, or template defied logic.

Once I finally got it installed the quick release sticks open and only sometimes will not engage. Can’t tell what I’m doing wrong as there are no instructions to read and no references stamped onto the parts to show if they are installed correctly.

A template sure would have been nice guys.

My primary complaint is that when you open the vise even with a small turn, the quick release drops immediately so you really can’t loosen your piece without pulling on the vise face. That would be OK, but I need to pull it with both hands in order to apply enough even force to loosen.

The consequence is that the workpiece often drops to the floor thus risking damage to the work piece. You can also loosen the vise as long as you hold onto the quick release mechanism so as to prevent disengagement but again, that requires two hands, one to hold the quick release shut and the other to handle until it holds to loosen.

For me it is very awkward to have to reach under the bench and turn at the same time especially since my bench has doors for the storage area underneath. My solution was to wrap a cable tie around the quick release housing so that it does not release, essentially disabling this feature.

Turning the handle a few times to loosen or tighten is not that big of a hassle for me. That said, overall it is very solid and stable and I would recommend it especially if it is used a lot work pieces that vary in size.

Like a lot of Rockler products the instructions are not real clear, but you will get through it if you read them VERY CAREFULLY. Mounting screws would have been nice but I suppose it would be difficult to accommodate various vise face thicknesses and bench top configurations.

Received this vice expecting a much lighter and smaller vice. Had a 4″ vice already that I had broken due to over tightening. After taking a look and mounting on my bench was extremely pleased with how smoothly it operated and how beefy it was.

I doubt I will ever break this one it as it is very heavy duty. The only drawback is possibly that I overhang the vise from my bench to clamp long rods extending to the floor and I have to swivel the vice to one side to get clearance.

By no means is that a drawback, only my particular use. I am extremely pleased with the quality of this vice and would recommend it highly.

This is a great bench vise it’ll do everything you need it to. I see a lot of people getting elitist about their equipment. really what do you need a vice to do? 1) Hold stuff Tightly 2) Be tough as nails 3) Be easy to use 4) provide a spot for hammering the crap out of something 5) pivot side to side to create clearance when trying to hold awkward items.

This does all of those things without breaking the bank! One note is I didn’t get bolts or screws to attache this to the work bench (I bought a returned one so it might have them). but to be safe maybe grab a few 1/4″ lag bolts.

I had some laying around and it did the trick, this baby isn’t going anywhere!.

Happy so far. Jaws line perfectly, the threads appear to be good quality and operate smoothly. Nice finish. So far have used to aid with installation of ball joints, u-joints and axle shaft seals on a Ford Super Duty.

This involved some pretty heavy pressing and hammering which vise handled easily.

This vise is a good deal for this price point. Holds tight and doesn’t have slop/wiggle. I was pleasantly surprised because this vise is made in China. I replaced a china special vise that basically blew apart after applying a moderate about of pressure to it.

This Wilton is better made and even though I have not put a significant amount of pressure on it yet, it is better made than the others I have seen in this price point. Should be great for repair and metal work on on the ranch.

I would upgrade if I were a pro shop doing serious metal work- but that would be a huge price jump. Also I heard that the “lifetime warranty” is really only 10yrs- which is considered the lifetime of the vise.

My piece of crud last vice lasted 8 yrs mounted in the elements- it was not a Wilton.

Pros: it’s Wilton but Chinese, like a lot of products now days there’s the USA version and the off shore version. For the price it’s hard to find better. The slide (not sure the correct name) has been machined unlike most vises in this category.

To upgrade to the USA version you’ll have to part with over 600 bucks. To upgrade to the top of the line 6” vise you’ll spend approximately $2,000!!! So it’s all about what you want to spend, at the $200 price point it’s hard to beat.

Cons: The only major con I found was the locks for the swivel. The handle that locks the swivel/rotation are about the same size as my old 3-1/2” craftsman vise I have. Definitely a disappointment compared to the rest of the vise.

The other downside is the serrated “teeth” for the pipe holding is a rough cast, not machined or finely cast. I haven’t used it yet to see how well it works but a minor disappointment unless that was a major factor in your purchase of this item.

Conclusion: For the price point I don’t know if you can do better. If you’re expecting the $600 or $2,000 version you will be disappointed. If you’re comparing it to other Chinese vises in the same price point it fares well.

My experience, a toolmaker for 20+ years and have used commercial tools and recognize quality equipment.

I can’t give an informed comparative review, but after some research I’m glad I bought this one – great heft, smooth action on the jaws, and it grips well. The swivel action locks down firmly, and once it’s unlocked, the vise spins around on its base plate with an even motion.

I immediately trimmed some aluminum angle to make set-in jaw liners. Once lined, I did some cutting and, most urgent, tapping threads – mostly impossible up to this point without a vise. I plan on doing some small scale forging and welding to start dabbling in metal fabrication, and I look forward to having this tool on my bench to add stability, leverage, and ease to all manner of tasks.

I haven’t used it much and I haven’t had a vise until now, but I can say that I should have gotten one, probably before I bought a compressor, half my wrenches and hand tools, and definitely before I started doing any of the metal work I’ve got under my belt.

This is my “Covid vise” that I picked up in October of 2020 to bring my woodworking hobby to the next level. It was a helpful tool that unfortunately stopped working in July of 2022 after occasional use (not more than weekly).

It appears that the acme thread is significantly harder than the vise, such that the internal threads on the rear jaw of the vise have been stripped such that the vise no longer opens or closes. I’m still waiting to hear back from the warranty department (warranty ticket submitted over ten business days ago — with no response to date).

The vise carries a “limited lifetime warranty” though no details are readily available. As it stands the vise is decent. Given the other reviews I’ve read this seems to be an anomaly so I think I would still recommend the vise, with the caveat that a heavier duty vise is probably better if you can afford it.

As an introductory vise this will likely serve you well. I’m still waiting to see how the warranty service holds up, so this may be the last Pony Jorgensen product I purchase, but I will endeavor to update this review once it is resolved.

Should the vise be replaced I will continue to use it, though I will likely be looking for a heavier duty vise with more robust warranty.

Received the unit without any included invoice or manual. The jaws do not meet flush at the bottom without a great amount of force. I returned two units of another brand because they did not close flush at all at the bottom.

I came to this site to find help – none. Seems you have to log in to an account to get help even before you purchase. The “marketing” email does not work. Looks like support is pretty scarce. The less than 2 min video is pretty much useless.

I may be an advanced DIYer, but I still like manuals. I searched for a manual and came up empty. BTW – purchased from Amazon.

I had a woodworker’s vice that had been passed down to me. The nut mechanixm was worn and not functioning propertly. I emailed Jorgenson asking for replacement part information. They sent me a new replacement part was which much appreciated at no cost.

i love this workstation 350! i’m a locksport enthusiast and enjoy making various tricky locks for friends around the world to pick open. the panavise helps me do everything i need from holding the locks while i attempt to pick them open, simulating the job of a door (although we never pick locks in situ!) to holding my drill while i make the weird and wonderful security pins to go inside the locks.

i have the jaws the other way round from the picture, so back to back and the strong winding mechanism coupled with the neoprene jaw covers is strong enough to hold the bow of a key while i file cuts in it and the multi directional head on the vice means that any angle is easily achievable.

the base tray is also very useful, especially if you are dealing with fiddly bits, like pins and springs and you want to keep them apart until you need to. i used it to help me solder something delicate yesterday which needed to remain still during the process which it did with ease and the round bit at the opposite side to the winder doubled as a holder for the iron.

if you need a vice i cannot recommend this enough, i’ve bought several table top vices that have failed for one reason or another, invest a little in one of these, you won’t regret it.

I use this vise for electronics assembly. I have multiple variations of the 350 model from PanaVise that I use daily. I prefer the weighted base option over the parts tray. But, the parts tray base is OK.

I only gave it 4 stars because without generous lube the crank can be hard to turn using only one hand. Not any fault to Summit. It’s the design. However, bolted down to a bench it would turn ok. The 350 is a good little vise and will work for years and the rubber pads are replaceable.

Note: Some assembly is required. You can upgrade the base later if preferred.

I waited far too long to spring for this vise. I use it for a wide variety of projects, from holding PCBs to holding my mini oscilloscope. I use it often for small mechanical assemblies as well. The ability to reverse the soft jaws really helps with odd-shaped PCBs.

I’m tempted to get another one for my machine shop. Excellent for small/awkward assemblies. I purchased an add-on Quad Hands for mine, and I don’t regret it. Excellent combination.

The quality, fit, finish of this updated version of this model vise by Wilton is superior to older version of this Wilton model. I own an older version of this same or essentially the same model, which itself is a decent vise for a multiple positional vise.

It states made in China. Seems like it might be made in Taiwan, based on fit, finish, and likeness to other Taiwanese made vises out there, but Wilton, or parent company JPW do not want to run afoul of the Chinese gov’t on this one.

Better warranty than the older version of this model.

Currently oven the previous version of this type of vise, also made by Wilton. That version of the vise only had a five year warranty. This newer version has a lifetime warranty and also has every appearance of being better built than the previous version.

Have not yet been able to put the vise to hard work yet. Looking forward to see how well this one holds up. Was able to purchase this unit at a great price point via Zoro. Will continue to purchase items from them.

I needed to replace my old Sears bench vise (it lasted 40 years!) and did a lot of research into the different brands. Wilton consistently came up as the best, and after looking around I found this one on sale at Home Essentials Direct.

I like the versatility and the mechanisms all seem to work well but when I flattened a section of mild steel coat hanger on the vise anvil it left depressions in the anvil (see pic). Wilton says this is normal wear and tear.

I think it’s poor material selection for something that will, by definition, be pounded upon. My old Sears vise never sustained damage from something as benign as flattening a coat hanger on the anvil, and actually lived through a lot worse abuse.

I have not used this Wilton for much else yet but I am somewhat concerned about how it will hold up to some of the more demanding tasks that I’m sure I will be doing with it in the future.

Like many products, this needs some attention. There’s a roll pin that’s installed on the acme thread, and the sharp edges of the hardened pin are aimed at one of the soft faces. The hardened edge will wear on that face like a razor blade.

The builder could have aimed it differently, and it will pose a problem in time, so needs to be repaired before installation and use of the vice. To complicate matters, the pin can’t just be simply driven out, as it’s in a blind recess.

It will have to be driven out until it hits the shoulder of the cast iron face recess, cut with a small Dremel wheel, and the remainder of the pin driven out, then replaced with another roll pin. This time, install the sharp edges so they don’t wear on the face plate.

It’s a simple change that the manufacturer could have easily done and saved us a lot of problems.

This smaller clamp is good for smaller items that you want to work with. If you are looking at this, then maybe our interests converge a little. If you find me on YouTube, I don’t make videos but I can really catalog them into groups.

One group is literally all about clamps. Bench dogs, track clamps, DIY wood that looks like a race car, bought 4 of these here, aluminum anodized red. Just a little background, I know a lot about Clamping up an item for planing, sanding, drilling, glue-ups, and routing, and all of the pocket screw clamps.

Stability is the key to a good project. The Irwin bench vice is best used at the end of the workbench. Many people will add a piece of 1×4 or 1×6 wider than the vice. But where they falter is in not recessing it into the side of the bench.

Pull it out of the box and see. If you add the scrap boards, don’t go over 2-3 inches out on the ends. Can cause warping and be less effective. Then, if you notch, oh yeah, cut up your new bench, to make the inside edge of the wood jaw flush with the outside edge of the bench.

You will have a more stable work area. The clamp will become an extension of the workbench. And both can be used as one. A couple last tips. Leave the wood just a little higher than the bench and sand flush.

Also you can attach a thin piece of raw leather suede side out, or a finer grit sandpaper.

As far as being an entry level class woodworking vice, this has been an extremely valuable addition to my workbench. Pros: The vice is very easy to install. You can bolt it straight on to a workbench.

In my case I had to drill three holes to accommodate the vice shafts and screw. Installation took fifteen minutes. Installation holes are countersunk so you can add wood to line the inside of the vice grips.

I used some leftover half inch poplar and planed the top so it was even. Tip: install the lining wood on the inside vice grip before mounting the back of the vice to the bench. You will find that the vice is more useful and more frequently used than you thought.

Cons: It’s an entry level vice that is inexpensive, so if you think you will outgrow it quickly, then consider spending the extra money. Bottom line is I recommend this vice for basic woodworking and even if you have a bench vice, I still recommend this woodworking vice on anyone’s workbench.

Believe me you will find more uses for it than you thought. Understanding that the purpose of use is entry level, I give this vice five stars.

I’m a home DIY guy. I’m 65. My whole life I suffered with little $80 vises. I said to myself if you don’t get the a perfect vise now when will you. Well the time is now. I plunked down the $700 and waited for perfection to arrive.

It’s the best vise I ever owned but its not perfect. There are small defects that are irritating but none interfere with its suability, The thing is when you splurge for a $700 vise you expect perfection and this vise isn’t perfect.

That’s why I give it 3 stars rather than 5. The jaws don’t meet perfectly. They are about half a millimeter off. When opened beyond 7″ or so I I feel resistance as the cantilever on the threads exerts force.

There are some strange metal working remnants on the shaft. I blame these small defects on the crappy Chinese manufacturing. None the less I would buy it again and I do sleep a little easier knowing Chinese military equipment is most likely built to the same standards.

Very sturdy, tolerances are good, so far performs as advertised. The first time I struck a can on the anvil to crush it, there was a dent where the hammer head impacted. I tested it with several more strikes, dented to a degree on all of them.

The metal is too soft to be a striking surface. I would not buy this vice again, unless they knocked a 100. 00 off the price.

Super sturdy. Precise very tight tolerances. Good size anvil. The only thing is the base is not square between mounting holes. If you are replacing an old vise that did have a square base and you do not have slotted holes you may have to ream them out or drill new ones.

I was overall happy with this vise until it broke on me while I was using it with something in the vise. One of the adjusters the one that swivels the vise from left to right it broke around there. I think the overall casting of this product should be improved with better hardened materials.

As they called it central forged I am wondering what they forge it out of for it to break so easily. Aside from my criticism and picking this product apart it was a great little vise to have when your in a pinch.

Or need something to be held when there’s nothing else avaliable. The price was great I give it a 10 the clamping power I would give it a 7 due to only using it a few time’s since buying it. The size/weight is perfect.

The durability needs some improvement I’d give it still a 5 even though it broke. I think if the casting was made of more quality hardened material to hold up as every vise should be made out of. As it’s number one purpose is to hold things it would be a better product.

The two adjustment screws that screw into the vise could be of better quality or just that section could be reinforced as you have to constantly tighten those when your using the vise because they wanna loosen up.

Just bought this yesterday to use for metalwork. I mostly work with wood, but recently needed some tools for a project that required some metalwork. Very easy to use, clamps right on to any surface up to 1 5/8, pretty sturdy when clamped as well; I can pull the whole workbench just by the vise.

Clamping pressure is really good, grips tightly on metal plate, bolts, gently on delicate parts like electronics, more than enough for basic work. Haven’t used the swivel feature yet, but its a great feature that I know will come in handy soon.

I also like the double jaws as well, smooth and textured. Time will tell, but just looking at the build quality I would expect it to last a long time.

I like clamp on vises for occasional use on projects, I have a large, solidly mounted, rotary vise for jobs that need that. When I’m at my bench and need a vise on the bench, then a clamp-on is very handy and gets out of the way when not needed.

I had seen this little guy before and just hadn’t bought one, I was in HF the other day looking for a different vise, spotted these and bought one instead. Back in the shop, it seemed reasonably well made [especially for the price] but was a bit stiff in operation.

The stiffness was diagnosed as a lube issue, I dismantled the vise, greased it with thick, moly grease, and reassembled it. That did the trick. Works great, moves smoothly, and clamps up tight, just what a vise should do.

I’m satisfied and would recommend this vise to a friend, or anyone for that matter.

I wasn’t expecting something as solid as I got! The whole unit swivels around 100 degrees, which has been incredibly useful for sanding and angle grinding. The anvil surface is sturdy enough to pean rivets on, and the jaws are plenty wide for most projects.

I drilled a couple holes in some angle iron and attached it to the jaw for a longer jaw width. I needed wider jaws for bending long tin sheets, but I haven’t needed it for anything else. The stock jaws have two sets of grooves on one side which are useful for holding rods upright in without damaging them.

I bolted mine to my work bench with some washers and two inch 5/16th bolts, but I probably could have gone a couple of sizes larger. Overall very pleased with this buy. It’s not junk, and it’s not $400.

Pros: For the price of this vise it is a good deal for the average homeowner/hobbyist. Cons: The vise jaws are poorly aligned top to bottom and side to side. The handle feels like it is not aligned properly because it is a little hard to turn.

When I have time I will tear it down find out why. I would not recommend buying this vise if it was to be used in a commercial or industrial setting. My 5″ garage vise would eat this vise in a heartbeat.

It is relatively inexpensive and does what it is supposed to do. The fit on the jaws is slightly off but that should not matter. Unfortunately the base does not clamp down firmly and when working with the item held in the vise, it can move around a bit.

The inability to lock down the base is the only negative.

Priced friendly and attractive and economy buy for size and features offered. This is made in India, and ships from WalMart Warehouse. It def has some rough edges ans is not top quality, a caste tool, but very good for the money and free shipping.

I am pretty pleased if it hold up on my workbench for as long as I need it. Yes, would buy one again if needed.

This is a good vise for the money. Forged steel for strength extreme strength. Quite precise and tight. The jaws open very wide to accept a wide variety of materials. It is heavy, comes packed very well, and is quite clean and ready to mount on your workbench.

The swivel works well. The two swivel locks hold the vise securely and tight. The jaws mesh perfectly and hold your materials very solidly. The anvil face is very tough and large. The day I mounted it on my bench I used it to repack wheels on my trailers.

It held the large wheel drums very easily, making the job a lot easier. I highly recommend this vise. I also bought some 6″ magnetic jaw protectors for finer materials (and projects like re-gripping golf clubs) that need to be protected.

They work well on this Vise. One tip. Make sure you use the template provided when drilling the mounting holes. Doing so will assure you get all the positional versatility out of the vice. Enjoy it in all your projects!.

Do not know how I got by without a vise of this size and quality. Average user but working with it so far on it has not left a mark. This vise was not the cheapest or most expensive but is a high quality product.

It is definately worth spending the money for an 8″ instead of a 6″. I purchased it to help with an ameteur restoration of a truck.

Dont hesitate to purchase this vise! I compared it to the Craftsman and every other 6 vise I could find in the same price range. For design, strength, durability, finish, and quality, this is a clear winner hands down.

It has handled everything I have thrown at it. The action is smooth, the jaws are straight and come together evenly, and the swivel base and clamping screws work smoothy like a much more expensive vise.

The knurlng of the jaws is deep enough to hold the workpiece, but not so deep and sharp that it will damage it severely like others will. And, the jaws are thick enough to withstand a fair amount of abuse.

Other vises I have used have thinner brittle jaws that crack fairly easily. I have been a farm mechanic all my working life, and definitely recommend this vise.

Not brand new! The core with threads looks very worn and the washers and spring has deep scratches that looks like it has years of usage. I noticed the problem when I first notice the grease underneath was part grayish from metal shaving and another part of greas was clear yellow which lead me to investigate and take it apart.

Exterior of vise looks new though so I think someone pulled a shady move and switch it out thinking nobody would notice. Bad way to do business!!!.

I was in the market for a new bench vise after using a damaged vise for a long time. There were plenty to choose from online but it seemed this Wen bench Vise would be perfect. The craftsmans of high quality and to have an opening of more than 5″ jaw opening is great! The jaws open smoothly with no noise or rattling.

The 3″ anvil is very spacious and may be the only anvil I need. The weight of the bench is just right, not feeling too light or overly heavy. I recommend this Wen vise to any hobbyist, craftsman, jewelry maker, artist, etc.

If I ever need to buy another Bench vise it will be WEN brand. And thanks to Walmart for the always fast and free shipping!.

Record series 110 (4. 5 inch jaw width) to 114 (8 inch jaw width) is heavy duty in design, cast from ferrous material that will NOT break like cast iron even after severe hammer blows. The jaws are externally bolted, jaws can be reversed to allow gripping by the flat jaw surface, thereby not causing any damage.

The quick sliding mechanism is particularly useful when opening to accommodate large work pieces. The ‘Heavy Duty’ model can last for a lifetime even bought second hand.

Badly designed Here are my reasons The front 2 bolt holes are directly underneath the rear face of the vice so when you come to bolt the vice to the bench you can’t have the rear face in line with the edge of the bench.

1 the bolt holes miss the bench and 2 they are in the way of the rear face! You could situate the bolt holes two on left and one on right but the pressure of the vice would be wrong. All this can be seen in the pictures of the vice if you look carefully you can see the front bolt holes directly underneath the rear jaw.

Vice received on time. Excellent product, solid and heavy at will, easy to install on a workbench. Allows many manipulations with its large opening, its 360 ° rotation and its clamping power. I took a piece of an engine out of the vise so I couldn’t loosen a bolt.

The vice and the piece have not moved a bit, it’s more the workbench that almost loosened from the wall ;-).

I bought this vise to work on golf clubs. Works very well for a light to lower scale medium duty vise. I did have to clean it up when I received it but no big deal. I think they grease it up at the factory to keep it from rusting until it finds it’s way to the customer.

I sure wouldn’t want for it to arrive with rust on it. I don’t think this vise should be described as a “Heavy Duty” vise. You are going to need a much more expensive vise to tackle “Heavy Duty” uses.

However, that said, this is a solid unit and the price is reasonable. Highly recommended from this user!.

This thing is a piece of junk. I noticed when I took it out of the box that the in and out motion was not smooth and wobble free. I mounted it to a sturdy workbench, and tried to hold a Jeep control arm with it while disassembling one of the end joints.

The two locking levers were not strong enough to keep the vise from rotating, so I repositioned the control arm in the vise so that the forces would be going a different direction, and when I tried to crank the handle down tight, it stripped the internal screw so now the vise doesn’t work at all.

First off, the vise was shipped in nothing but the box that you would see it in on shelf at a store; which arrived basically torn in half with half of the vise sticking out. Second, it’s not the vise pictured in the listing.

It looks nowhere near as sturdy with jaw inserts which loosen after every other use. The jaw opening is roughly 6″, not 7″. And lastly, It’s painted with cheap enamel that softens if any brake clean touches the finish, not powder coat as in the description.

I have been thinking about purchasing a vise for my work bench since I retired from my job as Tool and Die Maker 5 years ago. When I saw the sale price of this vise I knew that I had found what I was looking for.

It is really heavy duty. It’s actually much better than the ones I looked at the local Harbor Freight Store at a much lower price.

I usually work alone, sometimes with an apprentice, but usually it’s just me. This vise is one of the most important tools I have. I wouldn’t be able to (safely) complete a lot of tasks without it. We’ve all been on a job site and witnessed somebody performing a task unsafely because they didn’t have a vise to securely hold something for them.

I choose to work safe everyday, and with high quality tools a craftsman can trust, and that’s why I would highly recommend this product!!.

It is a nice piece however, 4 stars because the casting sand on the base mount was not cleaned very well before it was painted, a minor annoyance but it could start flaking, time will tell. The color is absolutely nice to look at as it is a contrast to metals or darkly painted parts.

The jaws come together squarely and this is the most important aspect to me. Would I buy it again, absolutely.

Decent vise but the jaws are pretty oversize for the tiny anvil portion. I’ll have to reinstall my old broken vise for a hard flat surface to hammer on. Later I saw better, more cost effective selections in the Dodgeville Farm and Fleet.

I do recommend Farm and Fleet, especially when you can shop in person.

I bought this twice and had to send it back both times. The first one looked like it had been dropped, the handle was bent pretty bad. I sent it back and ordered another one but on that one it wouldn’t open or close so I had to send it back.

Think I’ll try another brand.

While this medium duty vise does the job in general, its a cheaply casted model that lacks any precision, is difficult to open/close and the paint job is about the same quality as a ‘Happy Meal toy’ This all said – it is a $30 vise and heavier than others I have seen in the same price range.

If you just want a decent vise on a budget for lighter duty tasks – this will do the job.
