20 Best Wax For Gelcoat (2022 Updated)

After cleaning off the oxidation on our 20 year old bow rider I applied a generous coat of this wax. It went on and wiped off extremely easy. It gave the hull a rich shine! The boat has been on and off the lake 3 or 4 times.

The water still beads up and a quick rinse is all that’s needed when we get home. Great stuff.

After washing and letting my 38′ boat dry, I used an applicator with a dab of wax on it and applied a very thin layer over the exterior fiberglas and rails of the boat. I used a quarter of the bottle.

Then going back with a micro fiber cloth I wiped off the haze. It took me 2. 5 hours and not a lot of effort. The hardest thing to do was to keep from sliding off the boat when kneeling or sitting. The wax micro layer is hard and slick.

Bugs don’t seem to like it. Worth the cost.

This cleaner and wax by Meguiars is truly a flagship premium product. It’s easy on and easy off and gives a brilliant shine to the fiberglass on my boat. I like to keep things nice but don’t want to work myself to death getting the end result.

This wax performs beautifully. if it stands up to the elements for a reasonable time, I will continue to use it to keep our sailboat in top-notch condition.

I used on a 14 yr old 31ft class C Greyhawk. Badly yellowed from previous owner use of fast mop and go products. Tried the 49 oxidation remover 1st. Had to go to 1000 grit wet sand to get beyond old product and stains, 49 buffed and finished off with flagship.

Lot of work but finished product looks better then new, mirror finish. Used a porter cable da for sanding and a porter cable buffer for compound and wax. Again take your time and set away 50 to 60 hours to do it right.

Will follow up in 4 months with a foam cannon wash and another round of flagship. Have used it on boats and same results, Will buy again. No I was not solicited for this reveiw. Just good stuff.

Used this on two customer boats as a final finish after buffing. Shined, didn’t really have that slick finish a lot of polishes do. Anyway, both boats faded in sunlight exposer. There is NO UV protection whatsoever! Had to remove what was left of the polish an rebuff.

Never again. the marina where both boats are stored removed it from stock! They don’t want the headaches either.

I must admit I was I was Pleasantly surprised after using west marine one step restorer wax for medium and heavy oxidation. First let me start of by saying my boat is 2001 open fisherman white in color.

I use it Regularly during summer season and as with most boaters I take it on vacation and leave it in a slip for a week or two. (No bottom paint) so I have had to use some pretty touch chemicals to remove all the growth and Smudge.

On average I have detailed the boat once every other year. With that being said I noticed the hulls were starting to oxidize near the waterline and I was not going to let it get worse or to the point of it getting chalky.

So on the first Saturday after receiving the wax restorer I started. I first I applied by hand and then removed with a buffer with a follow up coat on the chalky locations and removed that second coat by hand.

I was amazed at how well the product was working. I finished the entire haul including the bottom. Once completed I followed up with McGregors wax and polish. Could not believe how much of the oxidation had been removed and the shine that was coming through on a 2001 haul.

Entire project took approximately seven hours to complete. The following day I used the McGregors wax on the inside and deck. The oxidizer took a medium amount of effort to remove however the McGregor’s wax went on and off with ease.

The combination of these two products has left me stunned and I promised myself that I would complete this at least once every year using the same two products. Yes I would definitely recommend these products.

Purchased to remove the dull oxidation on the gelcoat of our caravan front panel. First trial using micro-fiber cloths with good results. Second trial using Hex logic orange sponge for application and removed / buffed up with a microfiber cloth.

with excellent results in less time and effort. There is a high degree of water beading after final buffing, will be monitoring how long this lasts.

Really easy to use with a machine polisher. Took about 3 hours to get a good polish on a 32ft boat.

The media could not be loaded. Colinite is great for the boat or car! I used to use this on my car back in the 90s for car shows and I still use it today…you won’t disappointed in the finish.

I had heard about and read about collinite for years now but just assumed it was an “old timer’s” wax and always opted for the all the modern technology based products like 3M, Mguiars, NuFinish etc for my 39′ express cruiser.

I had gotten to the point where last year I was convinced my gel coat was beyond help and I would have to paint or awl grip the topside. It had been dull for years now and no matter how much waxing I did, the chalkiness would return a month or two after.

Then out of shear desperation, as a last resort I tried Collinite this past January and WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!! Nothing, and I mean nothing had come close to what collinite did for my boat. Pretty easy on/off.

Used collinite cleaner and then two coats of Collinite 925 and the boat looks GREAT 5 months later! Just try it. I’m frickin sold on the stuff for ever.

I researched several products to restore the shine and color on my 2002 fiberglass boat. The boat had fading on the top and stains on the bottom from sitting in the water. After cleaning the boat with Collinite Fiberglass Boat Cleaner.

great product too! I applied a coat of the Collinite Fiberglass Boat Wax and the shine was right back to the day I bought it. I would highly recommend this product! The wax dries quick so you need to work small areas at a time, but can be cleaned up by applying a little more wax.

The product arrived a day early in excellent condition. I believe this is a great product at an excellent price. It seems to be a very good wax, goes on and comes off easily. For my application it did not have enough cleaner properties.

I had some body and paint work do on my motor home. It left some over spray and dots of clear coat on the other surfaces. I had to use a cutting cleaner first to remove that before I could apply this wax.

It did not cut the over spray or bugs left after washing very well but it may have been me. I had a surgery to rebuild my shoulder and do not have the strength to buff with the wax applicator very hard.

It does leave a great shine and looks to leave a very good coat of wax to protect the finish.

Meguiar’s marine wax works well. Buying it by the gallon saves some $.

It’s awesome I highly recommend it.

has to be hands-down the best wax ever! Will last forever! Boat, car, you name it and it makes it look amazing! makes old black shine and luster! really does last a long time on surfaces doesnt leave film or residue marks and dark colors! this specific product will do better than the liquid version of it! I have used both and this one is by far the better option.

After being advised by another, “well seasoned” boater, “Believe me, it ain’t cheap but in all my year’s this is the longest lasting and easiest to apply and buff off wax I’ve ever used” So I bought it and after Kevin’s suggestion at West Marine to use it after polishing with 3M Finesse it-II Glaze.

After high school I started a airplane cleaning business and all my life I used 3M product’s but never Meguiars or Finesse it II. Last years wax is still visible and No where on the entire, 35 foot boat did the gel coat haze and this years application look’s even better! I can’t ever see using another product on any of my boats.

This wax goes on and buffs up easily even in full sun. My boat looks the best it has in years. I’m really love this wax. Don’t hesitate to try it. It’s great. Phil in Montross

The product is good, the guidance is poor. I have a PWC (Seadoo) that needed its bottom restored. I decided it needed new gelcoat. After watching several YouTube clips on how to apply and finish gelcoat I decided I could do this.

I have experience spraying cars and trucks. I spoke with the sale lady and explained I needed to cover about 30 square feet with black gelcoat. She explained the prep steps, how to roll on the gelcoat and how to sand it down before applying the second or third coats.

The sanding was necessary because she sold me a gallon of gelcoat with wax. I thought a gallon was overkill based on auto painting but I assumed she knew what she was doing. Also, rolling is a bad idea because it leaves it not with orange peal but grapefruit peal and it takes forever to sand it down due to the various contours of the surface.

I could use my mechanical sanders on about half of the hull. After the first rolled coat I sprayed the next coats with great success. It does not level well and still needs sanding but nothing like the roller.

Later when I asked why she didn’t recommend the first coats using gelcoat without wax she explained that they didn’t sell black gelcoat without wax and assumed I could sand it down for the subsequent coats.

She should have warned me that would be really hard. After 10 minutes to spray a coat it took a couple days to sand it down for the next coat or for the finish polishing. In the end, the bottom came out looking almost new but it took 10 times longer to do than I expected.

My recommendation: If you need multiple coats then do the undercoats without wax then finish off with wax. Furthermore, she sold me a whole gallon and I only used a little over a quart. Anyone want some black gelcoat with wax?.

I use this to repair my boat. End product looks good. More on what I wonder. The first quart works fine. I don’t use it all at once, but rather a little bit at a time. By the end of the quart, the gel coat get a little more concentrated, still works fine.

This was in hot summer. On the second quart I ordered in the cold weather, the first batch is fine. Second batch get a lot more concentrated only roughly 2 weeks after the first time opened.

I’ve been working on a particularly difficult kayak repair in fiberglas. Its difficult because none of the surfaces are flat and all are curved, bending, tilted, etc. I’ve used and removed three different gelcoats before arriving at Total Boat gel coat, neutral.

With a bit of tint we got close to the original, the application was by brush and the product thick enough to avoid pooling and running. Good stuff. Just reordered.

After many years of falling for various marketing BS on all sorts of waxes I decided to give 476S a try. I originally used it on my MINI GP (Silver Roof with Thunder Grey bodywork) and the results were simply stunning.

The GP had never looked so shiny and the beading was awesome. I now also own an R59 JCW MINI Roadster (White Silver) and the metallic paint just pops in the sunlight. I machined polished in July 2019, applied 3 coats of 476S to it and the shine, and beading, is still going strong 15 months later.

Just for info my Roadster is not a garage Queen and is parked outside 24/7. There is just no need to buy any other wax in my opinion. Easy on, easy off, stunning protection and the shine is blinding and very long lasting.

Easy to apply and more importantly easy to wipe and buff when dry. Lasts ages and gives great beading. You only need a small amount so the tin lasts ages. Great value. Recommended.

It is easy to apply however no easier any other wax on the market. I have only used it once this past weekend so I cannot yet comment on the long lasting durability of this product. I bought this hoping the durability would make this stand out over all other similar wax products.

Too early to accurately review.

Meguiars Flagship wax is the best wax I have found to keep my 5th wheel trailer looking good. It is easy to apply and buffs off to a high shine which lasts a long time. That is important since the trailer is large and frequent waxing is not easy.

When I first saw a friend’s results using this wax, I knew this was the best I’ve seen over the years. It has continued to prove its superior quality. I still can’t find another wax even equal to it in ease of application and depth of shine.

We bought this to give our travel trailer (Fiberglass sides) it’s first waxing. Wow! Not only did it apply and polish off with almost no effort, it did an amazing job. The camper looks like new, is shiny and repels water, and all those nasty stains are gone.

Meguiar’s never fails to perform across thier product line and this is no exceltion. Decades neglected gel coat came up with elbow grease and tlc. The color deoth is really great and the built in UV protectant should help going forward.

We have used this exclusively on our 2 canoes for 10 years and they still look like new. Recently tried it on the nose of our travel trailer which was chalking and it restored almost all of the shine.

It will need another application for best results but I am impressed. We also used it on our 2010 truck cap which is made of fibreglass and it still looks like new 5 years later, and that is with only the one application done 5 years ago.

This wax is awesome. It’s pricey but well worth the money.

I was fixing up our new to us RV because I noticed it was absorbing water instead of repelling. After I buffed it out with compound, I put this wax on. I’ve never waxed anything before, but it was so easy to use, worked just like it said in the instructions, and created a fantastic waterproof coating.

I’ll definitely stick with this wax, especially since it’s part of an incredible system. Love it!.

My boat detailer insists on this product. He says its the best. I bring it to him in Mexico. Its hard to keep my boat looking good because its a 14 years old blue hull and this works best. Wish I could find it in Mexico.

I was looking for a restorer for my fiberglass exterior front door. The full glass outside storm door provides a layer of protection from the wind, how ever the fiberglass wood like door gets the full sun during most of the day and has lost much of the beautiful woodgrain appearance it once had.

My goal was to bring back the luster & beauty I had tried other suggested fixes but to no avail. This 3 M marine type solution suggested it might do the trick. It seems to have cleaned the old material from the surface & filled the remaining surface to a smooth finish and except for the loss of the coloration from the sun it does look much better.

I’m glad I tried it.

I have a 16 year old Fifth Wheel and as typical of most RVs the gel coat finish has always failed to retain its gloss. It is way worse on one side from afternoon sun exposure. On most RVs the gel coat finish is sub standard so they will start deteriorating after a few years; as did mine, despite using wax and other finishes/polishes that claim they will solve the problem, including the product recommended by the RV manufacturer.

After countless hours of work over the years nothing solved the problem. I finally got a suggestion to use this product. I applied it with an orbital buffer and was shocked to see a nice glossy surface again.

It went on more easily than other products have and again I have a shiny RV. Granted, it’s not labor free, and is still work, but the end result is great. time will tell how long this will last, but so far it’s great.

If you’ve never worked with gelcoat before, it’s an interesting material. You have to be fairly precise with the amount of hardener to use. Too much and you’re mixture will get a little glue-like. Too little and your mixture won’t cure for weeks.

That said, I got a good mix and am very pleased with the result. Do note you’ll need to sand the stuff down after you’ve rolled it on (perhaps not an issue if you spray) — it’s definitely difficult to get a nice, smooth application just by hand.

Gotta sand (I go with an RO sander). Also, most of these products are pretty caustic, but this one seemed especially so — I left my leftover mixture in a plastic tub on the driveway, and an hour later, as the hardener and gelcoat’s chemical reaction continued, the mix had to be like 200 degrees.

(Once it fully cures, the temp goes back to normal. ) Needless to say, you need to be careful about where you leave this stuff, cleanup, etc.

Mixes very easily with the hardener and easy to apply with a brush or roller. Best price on E-Bay and looks great on my boat repair. I will be buying from this seller again. Good Luck with your finishing boat repair!! B.

First time using gelcoat on a large area; used it to restore a Boston Whaler. Used a $20 HVLP spray gun with 2mm nozzle from Harbor Freight. Used “no wax” version for a first coat followed by “with wax” version.

Gelcoat is forgiving of inevitable mistakes such as runs or sags; just sand them out. Easy to tape off an area needing additional gelcoat and spraying or hand applying with a spreader. Gelcoat does require a LOT of sanding, but the result is better looking than paint or epoxy.

Brilliant product-took stains off that my powerhouse or Y10 gel couldnt. Even by hand, took them out. Also cleans up chrome railings and cleats. Do small areas at a time, dont let it fully harden in before polishing off.

Came up like new again!.

Not used it fully yet but tryed a small amount on the front of the caravan and it made a big difference to the Gelcoat on the van.

Bought for a motorhome hard work but cleans up fantastically

Great product, easy to use wax already mixed into the gel coat as well as color, just add hardener which is included. Looks very good when applied. Have used this product several times, never disappointed.

I have not really tried this as so far I can’t find any hi quality rollers that are solvent ready. or not made in china. I got a list of good roller but not found in this area. In fact trying to repair anything is difficult hear for lack of arability.

Product works fine. It will harden to sandable surface but that takes about 6-8 hrs depending on temps. Initially it will set up in about 20 min if you mix the hardener right but still be tacky for several more hours.

In my case that was 1 heaping teaspoon to about 5 drops hardener. Mix a test batch or two first. My total repair used about 2 batches of 3 tsp. on my kayak bottom of course I also learned this is a pure white, and my kayak had some red tint to it so it was far from a close match.

Get a tinting / color kit. You can mess around with matching the color and once you have it, THEN add hardener. Ideally you might mix up 2X more than what you think you need so that when you find scratches you missed the first time, you have more to use.

Also note that since styrene can be used as a thinner, using typical white plastic utensils to mix will have them soften up rather quickly. doesn’t matter, just know it going in.

The picture shows a 1 gallon container which I thought this was one gallon. That would be an awesome deal for $40. This is indeed a 1 quart container. Home Essentials Direct does have that in the name so I should have known better.

Just beware the picture is not correct in that manner. I haven’t tried the product yet. Should be a few weeks yet before my buddie’s garage is ready for my boat. I will post more if any problems. 12-11-14: Update: I used this last spring to repair my keel where I’d been beaching the boat and it had worn through the gel coat.

This gel coat works properly when mixed correctly and given the correct conditions, i. e. temperature, etc. The keel still looks like new after a summer of use. Keep in mind that the gel coat itself might not be enough for you, for example, I used a few drops of different color dies in my mixtures to color match.

I bought this to repair a bare spot on my hull where the sand wore through the gel coat after too much beaching. I spent an hour prepping and applying this to the EXACT directions. It hardened after 30 hours and looked great.

Three days later I put my boat in the water and used it for 2 days. I pulled it back out and 90% of the patch came off, that’s without any beaching. I went to the local marina and bought some mid-grade DIY gel coat repair and it was MUCH thicker than this and has held up great.

Don’t waste your time and money with this stuff.

Used on a painted aluminum hull. No issues applying and removing. It seems a little pricey but if it makes clean up in the fall easier it’ll be well worth it!

This product is best for vessels that are not highly oxydized. Works well for lightly chalked glass cleans well shines well and easy to work with.

Easy to work in, and shines the camper well. Leaves nice gloss, but not for taking out spots, streaks, etc.
