20 Best Waxed Canvas Backpack (2022 Updated)

I’m the kind of person who uses their backpacks until they’re broken enough to be unusable, so I figured why not splash out more than usual on a hopefully longer lasting bag. This bag is sturdy, the leather and canvas are thick and all of the pulleys are metal.

It’s comfy as well, and is honestly like a tardis with how much room is in it (especially since it doesn’t look bulky). The lining as well seems like a decent quality that’ll last, and the zip looks and feels like it’ll last a lifetime, honestly.

I’ve seen no issues with the stitching as well, which is a relief as I’ve had that issue with clothing/bags in this price range before. To me it seems like a lot of care and attention to detail was put into the making of this bag! Looks wise it’s very sleek, honestly a little neat looking for me as I usually go for more textured/“distressed” leather but with a few personal touches it fits my usual style just as well.

I love the embossed logo, it’s subtle but very cute! It arrived pretty fast and in great condition, arriving on the Wednesday when I ordered it on Friday evening. Also the cotton bag it was shipped in is pretty nice too :).

I bought one of these for my laptop, my iPad and accessories. The bag is gorgeous, and gets a lot of attention. It feels reasonably comfortable and it’s a sturdy thing. I’m happy it’d be good in inclement weather.

On the minus side, the laptop pouch in the bag lining is not big enough for my Lenovo 16. 5″ laptop, and because it’s not secured internally you will always pull it out if there’s nothing left inside when you pull your laptop out.

The bag is also deceptively small inside. I don’t know why, but once I have laptop, iPad, chargers and my headphones barely anything else fits in, and because you have to go through the top and the lining isn’t fixed it’s impossible to see if the space is used efficiently.

Would I buy this again? Probably not, having a bag that constantly turns itself inside out is really annoying.

This was ordered as a gift for someone who expressed a wish for this particular backpack. It was out of stock when ordered, but was sent to me immediately it came back into stock. Having looked at the backpack myself I am very impressed.

It is smart, stylish and looks to be excellent quality. It also looks roomy and practical. It comes packed in a lovely cloth tote bag which was a wonderful surprize and a very impressive touch. I am sure the recipient will love the bag as I know she absolutely loved it when she saw it on the website.

It is even nicer in reality and the real leather trim makes it stand out from other similar makes. Very pleased with the service all round.

This is a wonderful backpack that I hope to use for the rest of my life. There are a couple of things that could be better: the straps that go over the top of the bag are not functional, a styling exercise, as they don’t actually do up, but are held by magnets.

Look great, and are easy to undo, but not very secure and diminish the practicality of the bag. I’d like more authenticity here. The interior compartment is also a little “lose”, with thin materials.

I would not want to put anything heavier than my 13 inch laptop in the pocket there, for example. I think a canvas interior with softer lining inside the pockets would have been better and more durable.

Lastly, there’s one or two lose stitches here and there. Nothing major, but need to keep an eye on. Other than that, I am very happy – it’s high quality and the perfect size for me. Got myself a holdall from Kovered as soon as I received this, just so impressed with the quality and brand ethics.

I have come to appreciate my Taw backpack so much. I use it so much, even when it’s not really necessary. Comfortable to wear, and the way it unfolds, you can carry a lot in it, not even including any size laptops, along with numerous tablets.

It doesn’t stain easily, due to the slight wax covering, which doesn’t have a sticky, or strange feeling to the touch. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and because of the abundance of rain, most of the year, this is the definite backpack to have.

Well made, and I would not hesitate to order again for myself, or someone, who would like it as much as I do. Thank you, Greg B.

Well constructed backpack and lots of sections for various items. I really like the design principles and the use of reclaimed materials was a must for me. Only a couple of weeks use so far, but very comfortable and accessible.

I wasn’t sure about the rolltop design, but this makes sense and gives quick access to your items but also a sense of them being secure when travelling etc. Will definitely be recommending this item to colleagues, however a number of people have already commented on how nice the backpack looks.

I am a big fan of Burton bags, they have been tried and true durability for me so I always come back to them. I bought this in the black because I knew I’d be using it to commute to work on days when I have a ton of stuff and wanted to look somewhat professional.

It’s a very ergonomic backpack for such a large size. I took this on a snowboarding trip, didn’t want to check another suitcase in addition to my board bag, I was able to fit my weeks worth of clothes in it.

It doesn’t have compartments, which is great for when you want a large volume bag but not ideal for an everyday bag if you want to stay organized. It does have a small laptop compartment though, useful for iPad but doesn’t fit my largest work laptop.

The black fabric is really nice, has sort of a faint pinstripe pattern which looks and feels classy. Would highly recommend this backpack for travel!.

A sturdy well made bag, it has enough space to fit my gym clothing and water bottle, and a seperate padded sleeve to keep my laptop safe. It is very comfortable to wear and the adjustable straps are handy for the perfect fit.

I recommend this if you need a bag to fit everything you will need for a day trip.

Great bag, plenty of space and pockets. Bought it for my nephew who’s starting high school, can hold a laptop + shoes + hoodie. Very sturdy, it feels like a teenager won’t be able to destroy it. Only thing though, why is it called Tinder 2.

My wife gifted me the Isle Royale as a Christmas gift – yes, she really does love me! Have taken it out hiking, winter camping and bushcrafting so far – it’s first canoe trip is coming up! Beautiful quality, pretty much bombproof.

There is a bit of a learning curve on how to pack it properly, but I figured that out pretty quickly. Fits quite a bit of gear but is still useable even if it’s not full. The leather straps and belt make it super comfortable.

This is the last bag I’ll ever need. For reference, I’m a big guy – 6 feet tall and 250 lbs. I did need to upgrade to the large belt rather than the stock one that comes with the bag. Things I’ve fit in the bag: tent, sleeping pad, cot, sleeping bag, clothes, food, etc.

On my recent 22km hike, my weight (bag included) was around 38 lbs. Bag was comfortable and a joy to use. Not for everybody, I get that. But for me, this is just chef’s kiss. As usual, Canadian Outdoor Equipment Company was excellent to deal with.

I can’t say enough good things about the Frost River Isle Royale Bushcraft Pack. I was looking for a rugged, heirloom quality pack that could carry all my gear on my adventures and I definitely made the right choice.

It can handle lots of weight and all the hardware is extremely high quality. Very happy so far!.

I pined for this backpack for a while, as it was aesthetically pleasing, with its subtle design and attractive colors. I daydreamed about these magical magnetic openings and how this bag would project me into some future time and space where zippers don’t exist.

I finally got it and have been using it for more than a year now. It’s capacious, looks good, has plenty of nice pockets for a maniac like me to happily organize everything, and feels qualitative. But, it has drawbacks which seem like they were ignored specifically for the purpose of producing a svelte-looking bag.

Notably: – The magnetic clasps are finicky! Hard to close without looking, or without using two hands. They do not inspire confidence when I am storing my backpack in the trunk of a car for a trip, as the right nudge unlocks them.

– The front lower pocket becomes practically unusable when the bag is full – the stretching of the fabric tightens the opening such that placing and retrieving items is a hassle. – The straps – while adequately padded, are attached by a thin strap, which means they are too easily spun and flipped and misaligned.

I feel like I could remedy this by sewing a piece to connect them. Also: have to tighten them every time you use the bag, as the cinch is loose. – Finally, this backpack is top-heavy and will NOT STAND UP on its own or without being angled against a wall just right.

It’s probably asking too much of any backpack, but for this price and with this specialized tool, I am always worried and upset it will topple whenever I place it upright. I have been startled in the middle of the night as it had crept and jumped off the ledge i had placed it on.

Either it will find its way to the floor from chairs and ledges, or just simply faceplants into whatever you were hoping it wouldn’t. The base could use an addition of weight or to be widened. TL;DR- I was hoping this bag was more of a tool than a luxury item, considering the brand and its prowess, but was disappointed.

I bought this because it has a more refined look for a backpack and one that didn’t scream “student” in the work setting. The fabric on this is really rugged but nice, and the leather accents are excellent.

It is water resistant, and I know this, because we had a monsoon-like rainstorm yesterday and everything was fine. I did have an umbrella, which saved it from the worst. I ordered a rain cover for it.

It’s comfortable on the back and it has a ton of organization. It also has a lot of space, enough for a laptop, water bottle, umbrella, lunch, two notebooks, pens and a jacket. There are some drawbacks to this bag.

It does pick up lint pretty easily. Also, maybe there is a break in period, but the zipper is pretty tough to use. The snaps on the flap are perplexing. If you don’t think about it they just work, but the moment you try to think about it and close them they are impossible to close.

It’s also pretty expensive if you compare it to some alternatives (but not as expensive as some other alternatives).

I really like this product – it’s a sleek and beautiful (in a rustic, functional way) bag that has become the backbone of my everyday carry. However, the lack of a few details docks a few points off in my book.

I wish there were more pockets and a little more internal organization. I’ve gotten around this by using pouches to keep the stuff in my main compartment organized, but it’s a slight inconvenience. I also wish that the shoulder straps were more ergonomic – they’re merely okay.

That said, I’d strongly recommend this any for anyone in a professional or urban setting. Oftentimes backpacks can look amateurish or ridiculous on adults, but this does not. I searched long and hard for a bag that would satisfy my tastes and needs, and this does the job well.

I ordered the green backpack and I love it! It is big enough to hold all my books for school, yet small enough so that when it’s full, it doesn’t hurt my back to carry (as I am short and other, larger backpacks are more difficult to carry).

It also has plenty of pockets and is made of sturdy material so hopefully it continues to last!.

I love this backpack! However, the description said it was a mini backpack and it is actually the size of a regular school backpack.

I’ve had this backpack for a few years now, and here are a few things to note, and my overall experience with this bag. TLDR: A simple durable backpack that will probably survive whatever you throw at it.

I’ve used this bag for travel, small trips, studies, and even just groceries. No matter how much I stuff in there, or how heavy it gets, it survives and keeps up with everything I throw at it in stride.

It has enough space for most of your needs when you need to fill it up, but when it’s empty, it doesn’t look at all bulky and doesn’t take up any space, so you don’t need to worry too much in that regard.

Keep in mind that it is a single layered textile sewn together, so no back support, something to make it keep a certain shape or anything, meaning it is very floppy and flexible. Definitely wouldn’t recommend using it for documents and such.

Now on to the specifics of how it has held up after years of nearly constant use: The zippers are good, they are smooth and haven’t degraded at all. The straps have held up really well, they have definitely been loaded with far more weight; far more times; than it should’ve and are still as solid as ever.

But why, you may ask? The reason takes us on to the next topic; the cotton canvas. the material used was probably of a higher quality than it should’ve been considering how much I paid for it ($15 w/o shipping).

Other than the colour (which I’ll talk about later. ), even after the hell I’ve put it through, the fabric has not changed much in terms of wear and tear, sharp and pokey things notwithstanding (be careful about that).

All the sewing keeping everything together was done thoroughly, so it wont burst at the seams, and although the straps may seem flimsy, they can easily handle more weight than you would likely be comfortable putting in the backpack.

After washing the bag for the first time, it will likely begin becoming susceptible to at least some slight discoloration, as has happened with mine. The only thing that isn’t so great is the drawstring, or more specifically, the hole it comes out from, and though it’s reinforced with a metal ring, it’s still only that cotton canvas keeping it there, mine probably went bad after about a year of use.

It’s slowly fraying and getting worse, but it’s still completely usable. Now, if you’re still with me at the end of this; for no reason, very long, over the top review, have a nice day :).

Price was the lowest i’ve seen for this bag, I wanted be like Oprah, “you get a bag, you get a bag. ” I only purchased two for my boys; I plan to put their first Initial or purchase Army dog tags with their names in honor of their beloved Vietnam DV Grandfather.

Bag is a nice canvas material like military fatigues, ideal to take camping or hiking. Will add a side pocket to hold a water bottle.

This pack is not bad. I use it quite regularly, mainly as a overnight bag and EDC on my weekends. I got the Olive Drab and I’ve had it for about a year and it’s held up pretty well, no quality problem.

The only thing I was a little disappointed in was that there wasn’t any padding/inner on the inside. The pictures in the drop makes it look like it has some body/padding to the pack. I can report it doesn’t have anything.

It’s just one piece of canvas. It wasn’t expensive, about $40 AUD + P/H. Which is pretty good for a canvas backpack. It was really just the convince of not having to go find one locally, lols.

I like the color and and all the zippered pockets. I do wish it was a little wider.

I have a love hate relationship with this tank. Let’s start off with it running small. I usually wear a M/L in shirts and in this tank I wear an XL and still, it’s tight. I hate the side cut because I’m busty and it’s not a good look.

The colors are great and it adheres to HTV well but I think it’s better for smaller bust ladies.

I am testing the product durability for a design I would like to create. It has been through months of wear and has yet to show signs of wear. I am confident that this backpack will be used for the final product design.

This is a great bag for short trips, going to work, or just going about the day. The bag is typical Topo construction – well made and sturdy. There’s plenty of room inside. My laptop is a little too large for the external laptop pocket, but it fits just fine in the inner pocket, which also keeps it off the bottom anyway.

The straps are sturdy and comfortable and have the typical Topo loops for keys or attaching other items. Part of the reason I bought the bag is the external front pocket, which I appreciate, but it is a little too deep.

It goes to the bottom of the bag and while the extra space can hold a lot, it makes it necessary to dig around at times to find the smaller things I’m looking for. I also expected there to be more internal storage like a zipper pocket or something, but there is only the divider to hold a laptop, books, or other similar things.

I’ve had my daypack for about a year now and it’s still going strong. The quality is out of this world (as most Topo gear is). My only issues are the water bottle pockets and the dimensions. The water bottle pockets on mine are just far too small.

You can barely fit a slim Hydroflask in them. that being said, mine is a year old and some of the photos on the site now look like they may have made the pockets expandable which is exactly what is needed.

I also wish there was some sort of organization in the front pocket, even just two dividers like the Standard pack would go a long way. Lastly, the bag is a little too long to fit under an airplane seat.

Not by much, but enough that I have had a flight attendant ask me to store it overhead. I’m also 6’6″ and need all the leg room I can get. Other than that, I’d absolutely recommend it. The organization in the main pocket would make it a great work or school bag.

I love the size and shape of this pack. The slim depth doesn’t look bulky and it works well for carrying a small laptop and other odds and ends back and forth from the office. The materials are all very solid, especially the zippers which feel oversized and smooth.

I like the pocket options as well — so many packs come with dozens of tiny pockets that never get used. This pack hits the right balance with a few well-sized pocket options. Overall, the pack presents a classic, attractive aesthetic with solid functionality.

I have two relatively minor criticisms of this pack. First, in my experience it does not do well with weight. I’ve tried carrying around 20 lbs of gear and it does a terrible job of distributing the weight in a comfortable manner.

The straps dug into my shoulders and all the weight pressed directly into my lower back. Second, the fabric does not breathe very well, so using this on really hot days or for hiking is not the most pleasant experience.

For me, neither of these issues detract from its role as a wonderful commuter pack, especially if you fill it up with softer, lighter items like spare clothes in addition to your laptop, notebook, chargers, etc.

I got this in black and it definitely has the look I was going for. I like that blend of ‘outdoorsy’ and ‘professional commuter’ backpack, and the black leather one definitely has that vibe. Unfortunately, it doesn’t function like I needed it to.

For starters, my 15” laptop didn’t fit in the laptop compartment because my laptop is a bit hefty and 1” thick. The pocket has no stretch so it’s not forgiving if your laptop is chunky like mine. I’m sure thin laptops are fine.

Secondly, the water bottle side pocket also has no stretch. I had trouble fitting a slim hydro flask in the leather side pocket. The material is very durable, but a bit stiff. I’ve noticed some of their other backpacks have some stretch in both these areas so I will be returning this one and checking out some others.

I’d love to get the same professional look (like the Topo tag blending with the bag) in a pack that was slightly roomier and more functional for commuting.

Really pleased with the bag. I have a small laptop that fits nicely and the bag is ideal for trips to the office. The only thing I would flag is that Barbour have updated the branding on bag. So , where JL shows an image with the word Barbour and the Royal Warrants, the bag now just has the word Barbour across same sized area (in larger font).

If I’m being completely honest it looks a little naff. I’ll cope, but it’s definitely a backward step in the design.

A birthday present for my brother. I was slightly concerned by the colour being described as olive fearing that it would be too green. However, this is a soft, muted shade and very classy. A quality product that I was happy to give as a gift and well received.

I was looking for a robust, waterproof and lightweight backpack and this fitted the bill. I was able to fit plenty of items in the bag and it wasn’t backbreaking due to very wide shoulder straps. It cleans easily and feels like it will last for a long time.

I purchased this waxed canvas and leather backpack in khaki/chestnut, and am here to report that the value of this bag is high in all respects. Personally, I am nit-picky and demanding when it comes to selecting and buying gear, especially for my outdoors items that will be relied upon in so many crucial ways.

The high-quality craftsmanship of this bag, from the materials to the design and construction, is outstanding, and deeply satisfying. As if it weren’t enough that the gear is of such quality, I found myself further refreshed and comforted by the obvious care and enthusiasm of the folks at Buffalo Jackson Trading, which is even displayed in the packaging and accompanying bits of info and inspirational reading.

I love this backpack. It is extremely well made, it is very functional with lots of thought put into the design, and it looks great (I’ve already gotten many compliments). However there is 1 large problem with this pack.

The straps are VERY short. Im 6’2″ 250lbs and the pack barely fits over both my arms. If I have a jacket on I have to carry it by the handle because it won’t go over my arms and the jacket. With all the thought put into this pack im blown away they didn’t realize their straps are way too short.

My wife is 5’2″ 120lbs and it fits her perfectly. Beware before buying this if you aren’t a small person.

I like to wait a few weeks before I review anything I order, especially for rucksacks and backpacks, which you really have to put through their paces before you can get an idea about their quality. I was eager for this rucksack to begin with; Buffalo Jackson always uses premium materials and pays careful attention to their orders, and the rugged aesthetic of this canvas bag really is irresistible, especially in person.

I’m glad to say that this was no exception. Here is a quick overview: Pros: -sturdy -spacious -looks great -can take hiking/very mild camping -great for students/commuters with much to carry -has laptop pouch and accessory pouch -adjustable -metal buckles Cons: -on the large side for light urban commutes -it’s a rucksack, not a backpack, so there’s one main compartment I tried my best to put this back through its paces, from using it as an everyday passerby/commuter’s bag to taking it hiking and essentially trying to sweat through the canvas.

The bag itself is nicely assembled and very sturdy. It takes a little while to break in, since the canvas is stiff, especially around the portion that rests against your back. Pack your bag and wear it around for about a week, and the bag feels great and is comfortable to wear.

It is sturdy regardless of heat or cold and has a spacious laptop pouch with smaller pouches for accessories atop it. It may be a tad big for an everyday commuter or college student, unless you have a particularly large load to carry (camera case, art supplies, equipment, etc.

) for which case I find it very comfortable to carry. The bag itself has a lot of room, perfect for a day or two’s worth of clothing or for a day-long hiking trip. I have not taken it camping, though from the looks of it you certainly can.

The leather is good quality and the external pockets are convenient for things like water bottles or small accessories that you need to keep separate from the rest of your things. The buckles are metal and very sturdy, and there is a leather drawstring to use if you do not want to continuously fiddle with clasps or if you are not carrying much.

One of my favorite parts of the bag is the leather straps that run along its front. I find that they’re perfect for carrying a light blanket or yoga mat rolled up, or strap whatever you can think of to your back.

The only downside that I haven’t listen in the cons is a personal little nitpick. Should you load the bag with heavy items, there is no leather band that goes across your chest or waist or hip, so the support is not distributed as well as it could be.

However, you’d have to pack several kilos of weight for that to really matter. I highly recommend this bag, it’s my favorite. It looks like it will last a lifetime and just looks great to wear.

This is a beautiful piece of workmanship and is excellent quality. It was packaged well and shipped quickly. This is going to be a Christmas present so at this time I cannot comment on the use of the rucksack but have no doubt that it will last many years.

Bought it as a gift for S/O. The packaging was great and it comes with its own bag for storage. When S/O finally opened it, we both spent a few minutes just admiring the quality of the materials used.

The pictures do it some justice, but it looks amazing in person. Everything looks and feels like it is built solid and I look forward to seeing it wear over many years to come.

I’ve had the Daypack for over four years now and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I’ve used it for daily commuting, hiking, traveling, daytrips you name it and it’s my go-to bag every single time.

The quality of the bag is second to none as even after four years of daily use it still looks great with no holes or broken zippers. The canvas still holds its form without being too stiff as well. The leather bottom keeps the backpack safe from sharp objects or punctures when leaving it on the ground or throwing it around.

I haven’t had any issues with this backpack comfort wise. It can hold a good deal of weight without feeling awkward to have on your back. As a guy who always runs warm, this backpack also doesn’t suffocate my back like some other backpacks with extra cushioning do.

Overall, I truly love this backpack and after four years I still hold it to the highest standard of backpacks. I would say I would definitely re-purchase but I’m not sure I will ever have to with how high-quality this backpack is.

We purchased this as a diaper bag/quick carry bag for all the kid gear. It is easy to carry, sits up against chairs, tables etc. Works great. The water bottle holders could be slightly larger for easier in/out of nalgenes.

The zippers required some breaking-in, but the bag is built to last and we will begin customizing with additional loops and hooks for sandals. Thanks Topo for a great option for young active families.

Very cool look and materials but the bag was really hard to zip open and closed. Might have been because of the rigidness of the canvas. I felt it was going to end up being a pain every time to open and close the bag.

For that reason, I returned it. Also, the water bottle pockets are not at all expandable so you can only fit a small standard water bottle. Most insulated bottles wouldn’t fit.

I love this backpack! It is more expensive than the other backpacks but it is obvious why. The lining is white canvas, which I love. It’s easy to see things inside the bag and I just in general love the look and feel of canvas more than the standard lining.

The other small details of the bag make it stand apart as well – the heavy duty metal zipper pulls with leather pull tabs have a great look and feel to them. These extra touches do make the bag a bit heavier and thicker feeling than other bags, but for me personally the look and feel of the bag is so attractive that I don’t mind, I’m very happy with this bag.

Returned this bag almost immediately. I’m 5’3” and this bag swallowed my back, it is so large. The canvas is so stiff I wouldn’t want to wait long enough to see if it actually loosens up. The zippers were a tad obnoxious with how big they were and very difficult to use.

I expected a lot more with this kind of bag! The colors were nice, I’ll give them that. But not a bag for me.

I bought this pack to replace a previous version I bought 6-7 years ago. That pack was fantastic and took a lot of abuse. I bought this new pack thinking it would be almost identical with some improvements.

But sad to say, for my uses, the pack is a major downgrade. I use the pack mainly as a field pack for my outdoor profession. So it sees a lot of rain, sun, dirt, mud, abrasion, and hard use. It also gets some time as a carry on bag when flying.

I have 3 main complaints about this new version of the backpack: 1) The material it is made of is much thinner than the original. There is no way it will last the 6-7 years of constant use like my first one.

2) It isn’t very water resistant, things get wet quick in a rainstorm. The previous iteration could keep things dry for a few hours depending on how heavy the rain was. 3)The pack seems to have been re-designed as a student’s campus pack instead of an outdoor oriented pack.

The laptop sleeve works OK, but it is a bit awkward. When you unzip the laptop compartment, everything just kinda falls out into the elements. Once again, bad in the rain. When I go to pull out my field computer in wind or rain, anything else I have in that compartment blows away or gets wet.

The top pocket is also designed awkwardly. I believe the zipper is too long. When I open it to get something, everything tends to want to spill out while I’m trying to find what I need. I typically keep pens, pencils, headlamps, gloves, etc in the top pocket.

I ended up giving the pack to my high school daughter to use for school. She likes it for that.

I feel that this bag hit the spot with the capacity for commuter. It is big enough for what I need. And it still looks slim. I’m a big fan of the shiny texture. Since I like to wear all black in general, I tend to appreciate thesr kind of finish.

Definitely water resistant. I’d not consider as waterproof, because water can go thru the seam of the zipper. It has a minimalist setup to organize your stuff a little (laptop sleeve/ tablet size devider/ 1 small mesh compartment inside/ one easy pocket access on the top (I love that one)/ 1 larger compartment in the front/ 2 bottle holder) The bag is really light and comfy.

There are some good foam under the straps and the back panel. The chest strap are removable. The bottle pocket are expandable. The zippers are fine. Not the best, but still nice to manipulate. I love the second handle that is place right on the top of the carabiner strap.

It’s convenient.
