20 Best Wheel Marking Gauge (2022 Updated)

The 8 wheeled marking gauge has 1/8 and 1 mm scales etched into the rod. The marking disc is steel and cuts a fine line into wood for measurements. The cutting disc is counter-sinked and fits into the brass collar to protect the cutting edge.

Ive been able to use the gauge four ways; as a marking gauge, a depth gauge, a ruler and for measurement transfers. I think its a pretty useful tool to have in my shop. Ill be able to use it on any building material.

The wrench for the set screws does not have a tip on it, making it useless. The marking gauge itself is very nice, but without the allen wrench screwdriver, much of the function of the tool is not there.

I have purchased other i-gauging tools before, and have been impressed. Not so much anymore.

This is a very handy and easy to use tool. The good: well made, flexible and adaptable, nice markings and very fine marks from the wheel cutters, great value for money. The not so good: the allen key to tighten the additional wheels is very very small, hard to use and very easily lost.

No screwdriver supplied for the end wheel. It could do with a flat side on the guide to stop it rolling. All in all – I find it very useful, not top of the range but for what I paid, I am more than happy.

All that tech nonsense on the car and when the tire goes soft, they tell you to use a pencil tire pressure gauge. You are supposed to check the tires with every fill up or every other fill up, but we rely on tech stuffs because we have all become too fat and lazy.

However, technology reminds us that “this indicator may not be accurate. Use a tire gauge. ” Which is what you should be doing in the first place. it is a tire gauge. It works. Check the damn tires.

This gauge might (or might not) work well for higher pressure tires, but it consistently reads 4 psi too high on my passenger car’s 36 psi tires. Additionally, the gauge is measured in two psi increments, which provides for less precise readings.

For about $5. 00 less you can get a better, more accurate pencil gauge at Home Depot. I picked up a Husky brand gauge for a little over three bucks, and judging from comparisons with other gauges I own, it is right on the money.

I threw the Milton away.

Bought this yesterday at Paraparaumu store. Read the instructions on the back first ( even though I am a male). There are 3 or 4 mentions of a push button, for resetting and deflation ,but there is no push button on the gauge.

The centre probe in the gauge stem is too long and does not allow the gauge stem to seal on the valve stem so you cannot get a reading. Product testing does not seem to have occurred at any stage. Completely unusable piece of rubbish!!.

I ordered, in spite of the verbage indicating “VICTOR” as brand name. What was actually pictured was an “ACCU-GAGE” brand gauge, a pretty well regarded shop tool brand. When I got to the store, the gauge was a “Victor” but not at all what was shown.

Advance states they do not carry any Accu-Gage products & Accu-Gage confirmed this. The latter stated that Advance had been asked to stop picturing their products if they don’t sell them. Shame, shame, maybe not intentional but misleading ain’t it.

Nonetheless I returned the bogus gauge. I own several other Accu-Gages and they will repair & adjust them anytime.

This is a very good quality tire gauge, and works great. I had one made by the same company that was around 40 years old before it finally quit working. If this one lasts that long I probably wont ever need another one.

I definitely recommend this tire gauge.

Great wheel, except for those flimsy plastic hinges on the handle. But we just use them until the plastic hinge breaks and then have the handle welded as one solid handle. The mechanical counters are so much more reliable than the digital ones that always seem to have dead batteries when you need them the most.

the plastic handle connection is the let down..plenty of wobble..doesn’t inspire confidence. The tire/ wheel is incredibly heavy for it’s size, adding to the lack of stability of the handle

This is my second wheel like this. I have had one like it for 15 years. The only reason I replaced it was because I lost it. Well built last forever.

I needed to measure for a temporary winter fence and this did the trick. It’s a little shorter than I anticipated. I’m not particularly tall and I have to hunch over to use it, so unless you’re a child I don’t see how you’d use it walking upright.

Minor issue that’s probably revealed in the description though. Not even worth deducting a star over. I probably should have read the description better. Overall great product.

Very solid. Ball bearing is smooth, however I do believe the tape may be off a little. Thought it was me at first, but checked with a laser and the reading on my wheel is 2/10s short for every 10 feet of roll.

Not a huge deal for my purposes, but other wheel tapes I’ve owned were more accurate. Wanted to update this to 5 stars as I think the inaccuracy I was seeing was from operator error, not the tape. The ball bearing construction makes the wheel roll very easy, which is great.

except if you’re trying to go to fast. If you pull the wheel off of the measured surface before coming to a complete stop. it continues to spin. If you bump the wheel on something it will spin. My issue was that I was pulling backwards after coming to a stop, but still on the surface.

So the wheel would spin back and accounts for my 2/10s issue above. I’m very impressed.

The materials are good and workmanship is good. However, the shaft is too short and it will cause an average person to stoop over, making it harder to concentrate on running the wheel straight and maybe bringing on back ache as well.

I also bought a reputable 100-foot tape and tested the accuracy of the wheel against 50 feet measured by tape, three careful trials. The wheel measures over 1 foot short in 50. I returned the wheel.

Not the highest quality but works. Used it today to measure out fence for 10 acres. The spring that holds the stand keeps sliding down so the stand wouldn’t stay up unless I readjusted it. Dont need a stand do as I did, remove it.

The counter would sometimes not start counting, sucks when its takes you 600ft the notice it’s not moving. I have spent twice as much in the past and would have same issue with counter every once in a while.

Just push the reset a few times and it seems to take care of the not counting problems. If you are 6 ft yall not going to like the handle. I’m only 5’9 and wish the handle was just a little taller. All in all it did what I needed.

I will use it until it breaks.

I bought this after educating myself on the various styles and costs with this wheel and manufacturer seeming to be in the “sweet spot”. of quality vs. price I received it in one day and from the moment I got it I realized it was top notch.

It is very light at 1. 5 lbs. but sturdy with a folding handle and stand that both seem to work well. Don’t know if the handle clip would hold up to hard use but, if your careful, it should. The wheel is on roller bearings and spins freely and the counter is mechanical working both forward and backwards.

The counter is incased in rubber and the numbers are magnified for easy reading. I took it to a field we are measuring for a car show and it flowed easily across the park grass. I recommend this for medium duty use and quality of design and construction.

Unless you are using this for your profession I don’t see why you would need to pay more.

This is a pretty good measuring wheel, and I got it for a great price which is what makes it a great purchase. It’s actually a very versatile tool – I’ve used it to measure markings for new molding in a living room and also for measuring out the basepads on a softball / baseball field.

The counter seems a bit finicky, wish it had a way to pause the counter on the handle while i lift the wheel, but otherwise it does its job and Komelon items seem pretty well made. Would probably buy again.

Overall a heavy, nicely made tool. Except for the business end! The wheel is not a wheel but a fixed round disk. Held on by a small loctited screw. Viewed from the readout side the wheel is crooked by maybe 5 degrees.

Unbelievable! I like the rest of the tool enough to keep it and make a new wheel that actually rolls. Unless you are a machinist and can make a functional wheel this don’t by this!.

It’s not often I need to set a marking gage by rule when working with wood, it’s usually done empirically on the work pieces; but, when I do need to set one by rule this product is extremely accurate and is also quick and easy to use.

If you work with small pieces or are a fanatic about accuracy like me you will want to own one of these. I use this in the metal shop more than in the wood shop and in that context it’s one I can’t live without now that I’ve used one.

I’ll be buying another one soon so I can have one in each shop.

Have used it now for a few weeks and a number of ways. As a normal marking gauge and a depth gauge it’s excellent, no problems there, always spot on and keeps the setting no matter what. My only gripe is with the micro adjuster.

The locking nut can’t be fixes in place so both the fence and nut can slide about. This gets fiddly very quick and at least to me it’s a borderline useless feature. For the 2nd one I’d just go with the base model.

I bought this recently, having had to wait a while for availability. Well worth the wait, superb tool! I’m a beginner at this wood working stuff and I’m currently cutting masses of lap joints in pine to make some storage containers.

It took me a couple of minutes to work out how to use the micro-adjust but I now find it a really easy tool to use and, with the micro adjust, it provides brilliant accuracy. The mm’s printed on the central slide rod make it easy to set any specific depth – no rulers needed.

When marking along the grain of the wood the fixed marking wheel still keeps to the required line, producing a fine, easily visible line. So glad I bought this.

I’ll admit that when the wife asked me if there was something she could get as a stocking filler I wanted the metric version. But it was out of stock. However thinking about it, most quick measurements I make are made to the most convenient memorable number or gaged off an object, like a hinge etc.

and then if needed double checked with a steel rule anyway and it’s by Veritas… enough said!! So stocking filler opportunity sorted.

I am impressed with the quality of this gauge for the price. It’s imported, obviously, but it is a well-made tool, all steel and brass and solidly fitted. My only concern for long-term use is the means by which the graduation of the measures is done on the shaft.

The measures appear to be printed or very shallowly etched. A deeper etching would make this a lifetime tool; we’ll see how the measures last.

These come in a broad price range, but you probably don’t need to spend a lot to have a fine tool. This one is well-made and will most likely last a lot of years. It does what it was designed to do, so you won’t be disappointed.

I needed to cut 6mm of the bottom of a upvc shower plinth that had a ridiculous double curve in it. I used the marking gauge to very slowly and carefully scribe a groove into the plastic along its length and then, equally carefully, I used a multi tool to cut away the 6mm length.

It worked amazingly well.

Good quality item at a competitive price.

I am a long time customer and fan of Harbor Freight. I purchased this tire gauge to take to my daughter at school. The first time I put it on the valve stem, the head snapped off. I took it back and had no problem exchanging it, but when I took the replacement off of the card the head separated from the tubing.

Not broken like the first one; just separated. The card on these gauges read ‘NEW’. If Harbor Freight has changed suppliers, maybe they need to review their quality control. I will also add that I have attempted to include a photo, but could not either take a photo from this page or download a photo from my gallery.

And yes, it is less than 10MB.

This tire gauge is an excellent way to keep your tires in great shape. It is user-friendly. I highly recommend it.

I got this after having a bad time with a digital gauge, and man this thing works like a charm and is really reliable, highly recommended

I’ve had this wheel for 3 months and have used it daily, but it is now broken and unusable. Never thrown in the back of a truck and always treated gently. The counter-reset button on the handle stopped working after a week which I was able to overlook.

Now, right at the 3 month mark the tiny plastic clip which holds the handle open snapped off. This renders the whole thing useless. Why build it out of heavy duty aluminum and then have it rely on a cheap plastic clip? This tool is junk and not designed to last.

Planned obsolescence!.

Counter never wants to reset from handle or at the counter. Counter only starts counting half the time. Expensive unit for how poorly it functions, especially in cold or even cool weather.

Extremely solid, real metal construction. Even the plastic bits feel high quality. Folds nicely to fit under rear truck seats. The kick stand is wide enough to keep the tool standing on uneven ground.

So when I read other reviews of this product I measured an area that I already knew the measurements of, our deck – and it was spot on! I have a landscape project that I want to use this for; to measure out each section.

It is foldable, and the carrying bag (backpack style) is very nice to have & seems well made. The wheel is sturdy enough to roll over grass and the driveway without issue. It also came with a ruler. Very convenient gadget to have.

Just one thing, the wheel may spin before you put it down, all you have to do it push the black tab on left hand side of the wheel to reset it to 0.

The first one I received had a noticeable crack in the measuring wheel but I returned it the next day and received a replacement within three days. The new one has no defects and works fine. The problem I have is that the user’s manual, which is very brief, was written by a person not fluid in English and and is hard to implement.

I have not yet figured out how to consistently set intermediate waypoints for segments of a lengthy measurement that I can retrieve at the destination. I’m sure it can be done and I’ll eventually figure it out.

It is very accurate, measuring exactly 1/2 mile at the end of two laps on the inside lane on the high school track. It is also durable: I’ve used it twice on a mile long path through the woods with many ups and downs and roots and stones to contend with and it did not seem to faze it.

Long term durability I cannot address. It is light weight and easy to hold. The surface of the wheel grips the ground well without sliding or spinning. I expect it to meet my needs well.

I used a measuring wheel almost daily in my employment. It was a professional model with a rubber wheel. I could rely on that wheel to accurately measure footage on many ground surfaces, including snow covered ground.

I do not have that confidence in this measuring device with the hard plastic wheel. I am concerned it may slip in wet, slick, or snowy conditions. On dry ground, it works very well. Just be mindful of the possibility of slippage in less than ideal conditions.

For the average homeowner, this measuring wheel is quite adequate. It is a good value for the price. The included measuring tape and carrying bag are nice accessories. Update 2/26/2021: After just several uses on my property, one of the hinges on the folding handle broke.

Now the handle is nearly useless. I am sorry I gave this product a good rating. I no longer can recommend this measuring wheel due to the poor quality of its construction.

Bought this item as i will be needing it for a project in the future but haven’t used it yet so no idea how well it works. Axminster insists on wanting a review so here is my brief. Looks great, seems to be made well.

I’m sure it will do what it was designed to do – mark lines.

Lovely tool, lovely positive feel when using, very accurate.

I picked this up at the spur of the moment to measure for a driveway entrance into my property. I plan on doing some gravel road building and will no doubt get more use out of this product. I needed to accurately measure 350′ along a roadway to measure sight distance for an entrance.

I marked where I started with a flag and walked in a straight line, making sure to keep the wheel in contact with the road. I measured the distance twice and it came out exact each time. The reset and the numbers seem a little wonky, like they are not fully flush in the window, but it’s still easy enough to read.

I have a 15 year old Rolatape with hundreds of miles on it, and it works better than this new piece of junk. I bet I only get a couple years out of this unit before the counter internally fails. Resets should be positive–they are not–it’s a pain to use.

Trouble is, I doubt anyone makes a better unit anymore, but I will try someone else next time.

Bought this for our lake property to measure and figure out where we want to build and set up things. The measuring wheel is of good quality and I have used this type before. Highly recommended and will be putting it to good use this spring.

Appears to extremely well built, a good weight but feels balanced in the hands. The “action end” slides nice and smoothly on the shaft. I had to concede and read the instructions for the fine adjustment as it’s not immediately obvious.

And having slept since I read them I will no doubt need to refer to them again. Overall it’s a beautiful gauge and feels like it should perform well for a long time, is easy to hold and scribe against the wood and the mating surface is a fine polished brass.

When locked it doesn’t budge a micron which is reassuring to prevent errors.

As an engineer, I appreciate how tools differ in quality and most mid-range tools will do a good job for a reasonable price. The Veritas gauge is a joy to use, feels great in the hand and works exactly as a good tool should.

The design of the cutter is really effective, particularly with the bevel facing the brass register face; the tool pulls itself into the correct position more readily than an old pin-type gauge. I probably would never have bothered upgrading, but on seeing Matt Estlea’s Tool Duel, decided to give it a go.

what a revelation! Now that I’ve become more used to the handling, it’s proven indispensable for marking accurate, clean gauge lines that help improve making joints, etc. Overall, a worthwhile investment for what is a really good price.

Time to get me some more Veritas tools, methinks.

Used this on three wheel setups so far. Appears to work O. K. , but has stopped working a couple of times. Upon examination the activating pointer had slipped off it’s pivot. At first took a little while to work out trick of relocating pointer, but much quicker second time.

The unit does not like being on a base having any dust or dirt, such as a concrete floor. The small sliding roller can get sticky from dust getting into them. But overall it does work, good for the money, but not perfect.

Difficult to tell how accurate this device is without paying to have the tracking checked professionally afterwards, which rather defeats the point of buying one. But I did check the tracking using this device before changing my track rod ends.

It said the tracking was correct which ties in with the even tyre wear I’ve been getting. So first impressions are it is a simple and relatively cheap way to keep your tracking correct. Especially useful if you do a lot of off road.

I’ve read in other places that it is very important to keep it clean and free from the grit it can pick up off the ground. It is easy to take apart and clean if it does start sticking.

Measures actual scrub (i. e. dynamic tracking, not static figure) so always aim for zero even if your car spec says ‘toe in X degrees’. Difficult to find a completely flat surface – even car parks tilt but multi storeys are OK if you aim up or down the slight rainwater tilt, rather than across it.

Lubricate/clean the rollers with Amorall.

I have BSEE and MSE degrees and have at least three of these gauges in each of my four cars. The good price and quality of these tire pressure gauges allows me to determine an average of three readings of air pressure.

This gives me a more accurate reading than a one gauge one reading approach.

I read in Consumer Repots that they gave this tire gauge the top rating for non digital. They were right.

This product seems to be more accurate than the slime (junk) products for sale at the auto parts stores.

The Carta Plott tool is a fantastic way for DIYers, like me, to get project measurements. I have recently used mine to do two main projects – putting rock around the perimeter of my home and taking the measurements for a deck.

What I absolutely loved about the rock project and CARTA is that I opened the app, put my phone in the built-in holder and then ‘drove’ the wheel around my house, mimicking where the rock was to go. I didn’t have to go too slow, just a normal walking pace and the app picked up the movements of the wheel and recorded them.

When I was done, the app showed my path as well as the perimeter and area measurements which I could then use to order the appropriate amount of rock for my project. I was able to do a similar walk-about to determine the size and shape I wanted for my deck.

I sent that information to my handyman who then provided me with an estimate for the project. I was able to do all the measurements myself, without needing a second person to hold the end of the measuring tape! If I had wanted, I could have taken a photo of my property map and set it as the background in the Plott app, then ‘walked’ on top of it, virtually, to show where exactly the deck and rock were going to go.

But, you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to. I was incredibly impressed at the packaging – there’s no chance this will be damaged in shipping. I was able to set up the device, the app AND connect the two using Bluetooth in under 5 minutes.

Not kidding. No directions were needed; it is very intuitive for anyone who has connected devices by Bluetooth. It is well made and the extending handle is great for adjusting to any height. It is comfortable to walk with at the longest setting (I’m 5’6″ for reference).

The handle is removable for easy storage back in the original box. It takes 3 simple batteries and is wire/cord free! The cell phone holder is a breeze and even with one of the biggest phones on the market, in a bulky case, it fit with room to spare.

It turns so you can have the phone horizontal or vertical, depending on how you prefer to work. The Carta Plott is a very handy device for anyone working on large home renovation projects, from homeowners to contractors and handy-folk.

I received the Carta Plott and it was my first time using a product like this. My husband and I have always wanted to build a shed in our backyard but never took any measurements. This wheel in combination with the PLOTT app made our life much easier.

The Carta Plott came nicely packaged in a surprisingly small box with a handle on top. The product was in two pieces (the wheel and the screw on handle) and also included three AA batteries which you need to install in the wheel base.

The Carta Plott was simple to assemble and I really like the cushioned phone holder which could accommodate any phone size. To turn on the Carta Plott, there is a “TT” button on the left side of the wheel.

You than have to turn your Bluetooth on your phone. To use this in combination with the app, you have to download an app called PLOTT. I did this for my iPhone which I found right in the App Store. The app is user friendly and you can create all kinds of projects which can later be shared or exported.

We decided to take measurements for our shed space and it was really neat to see in “real-time” drawing the lines with the wheel and plotting the points. It then tells you the distance and measurements.

When you’re done using the Carta Plott, it is easy to disassemble, store and it doesn’t take up any space. You could travel with it if you’re in the line of work of plotting points or surveying. Overall, I think this is a really neat item and I think it would be extremely useful for anyone looking to take measurements for either work or home projects.
