Lagavulin 16 has a smoky wood smell to the drinker, however the smell turns into a bittersweet caramel dark chocolaty/toffee taste in the nose. A hint of vanilla comes to play due to the vanilla extract that was cooked with the scotch to keep the smoky consistency.
The taste of this scotch whisky is very smooth and cool. It has a little oiliness to it. The taste is more lively of wood burning. The sweetness of the flavors grasp within themselves and deliver a bittersweet taste which people don’t see in many whiskies on the rocks its only smells and tastes like wood smoke.
The finish is ever so pleasing with no burn, fades of sweetness and flavors that keep making you lick your lips over and over again.
Though this new offering meets the technical criteria for rye (a mash bill of at least 51% rye), the sweet, caramelly flavors suggest a high-rye Bourbon-which makes sense considering that Knob Creek is best known for its Bourbon.

Scotland- This western Highland malt is said to have been originally founded in 1794. Oban is a true classic with an amber color, an assertive, round nose, and a rich, slightly viscous body. On the palate, it is dry with malty and fruity undertones.
This was my answer to save a $125 plus. It’s pricey enough, but oh my!!! Yes I prefer single malt over blend. Blue was what got me into the expensive scotch. I used to hate the stuff. Oban 14 is every bit as good as JW blue.
For the price, way better imo. Again, it’s pricey and one day I will buy again. It’s easily one of the best scotches I have tried. If you don’t mind the price get it!!!! I am not going through what it tastes like and tasting notes.

OK, so I have had some really good Scotch, Whiskeys and Bourbons in my life! And this Oban 14 yr, my friends has the best balance/flavors/finish. Absolutely lovely. Well crafted! This in my opinion has the best value for money, quality and drinkability.

Oban 14 has great depth and body. It is not overpowering, too smokey, or harsh. A perfect sipping scotch. It strikes a perfect balance. It holds its own. I have tried quite a few single malt varieties/brands and keep coming back to Oban 14.

This is one of the oldest regular releases from Balvenie at 40 years old. Matured in a combination of sherry and bourbon wood it has a rich intense nose of fruit cake with vanilla, dried apricots, citrus and ginger.

I was a fan of another label from Speyside. They decided to get a little fancy with their woods which is fine, it seems to be the trend these days. Balvenie was always a good back up for me when it was not available.
They have always produced a very balanced and delicious scotch at the 12 year level. I was looking at 18 year from the other label but then saw this option was cheaper so I figured it was worth a try for a celebration scotch.
I am so glad I did. I actually like this better and it has become my new standard. It just has everything in balance. Caramel and nut flavors are tempered by some smokey peat in just the right way. You never get slapped in the face with big bold flavors – every sip is just right.
Is it worth the cost of entry? I think so. Its my new favorite and I will savor this bottle over the next year.
This is a good whiskey held back from being a phenomenal whiskey, if only it weren’t diluted down to 43% abv. Amazing flavor but the taste is so short-lived. It’s a shame they watered down such a wonderful drink so much.
This was a gift for my wife who earned her PhD. She was very excited to try it. Now it is much less of a nightly drink and much more of a tiny celebration in a glass. This scotch appeals to all five senses.
