Those Japanese distillers know how to make smooth hooch! This libation starts out with a warm spicy pallet and continues with fruit and wood. No reall alcohol burn with a 43% ABV drink. I was amazed at how easy it goes down straight.

No rocks. No water needed. Just enjoy the libation straight at room temperature. Long pallet of spice and fruits and a hint of wood. A most enjoyable dram ( or two or three!). This is a favorite of mine and my friends when enjoying a good smooth whisky.

I would give it 6 stars if I could.

The review “Be sure to drink with rock” is SPOT On! Thank you Sir/Ma’am. Full disclosure – I’m a spoiled Talisker type brat so I’ll rate everything blended to be rocked low. Got this as a gift. But this one has an especially weird cheap ” vilaige bar palette ” that is down right disappointing and lingering.

Reminds me of my college nights. Don’t expect a cool discovery tour – it’s just a lower shelf blended whiskey. No story to tell. But it’s clean. Like vodka.

This whisky is designed for Japanese Highball cocktails and in that use it is very good. I would not recommend it for sipping unless you like a very light whisky/scotch. There are many recipes online, but it’s basically a simple mix of whisky, club soda, ice, in a tall glass.

I also add orange bitters and an orange twist but that’s optional. Great on a warm day of if you want something different with a meal that you would normally have with a beer. These are very popular in Japan and all bars serve it there.

So if you want to try something very Japanese but very approachable I highly recommend a Toki highball!.

I’ve had a lot of bourbons over the years and have made this my only bourbon I buy and drink now. First off, it’s made with non GMO corn! That’s a huge deal to me. On top of that, it’s 50. 5 % alcohol! Last but most important, it taste great! It’s got everything I want in a whiskey at a very modest price.

Seriously, why pay more? Just hope the price doesn’t keep creeping up? If it does, I’ll keep buying it cause everything else will have as well.

There are several types of bourbon, each one serving a specific & special purpose. Like a date with an attractive woman, you can enjoy spending hours of complex conversation with. That’s why Four Roses came into existence.

Then there’s that date when everything is destined to have a Wild Turkey 101 ending. Just my way of saying this whiskey has the best finish of any I’ve ever consumed.

Not gonna lie at first it was a little Hot because I’m relatively new. But after a few glasses here and there I’m now acclimated. Let me tell you wow, you really taste the difference between an 80 or 90 proof and this.

It’s an absolute caramel bomb and pretty sweet. I’ll always keep it around. Goes great in cocktails too, actually stands up. But I have to say I recommend it neat.

This is all the proof you need to show that blended malts can be every bit as good as single malts (and in many cases – better). This is 100% 12 year old aged (as a minimum) and I’m a great fan of it.

Definitely a Whisky to be tasted for itself. Of course it will go well in cocktails but why add anything except maybe a drop of water or an ice cube. This is for Whisky lovers. The box design make it suitable as a present (always welcome here).

Chevas is not a “single malt” which gives the expert blenders their head to create. Recommended.

Anyone looking for a good but cheap scotch, blende or single malt, could start with this product. Will take this over JW Black Label (the most popular blended 12 Yrs scotch, arguably) any time of the day.

Great nose smell of vanilla and bubble gum, palate starts with light hint of smoke and peat that are quickly enveloped by floral and syrup sweetness as well as pleasant oak wood taste, finishes with some more fruitiness and dry.

The taste combines all elements of various production zones in Scotland, but does not have the bitter and tongue-burning “cracking of spices and black pepper” and “heavy smoke” that JW Black Label boasts about.

The taste could rival some single-malt scotch that are 2-3 times its price.

This whisky has got a bit pricey now at around R350 to R360 retail but the Black Friday special at Makro was around R100 per bottle discount which was an absolute bargain. My wife and I both love Chivas Regal 12 Yr for its great peaty flavour.

A tip is to try our own local Three Ships 5 Yr as a good alternative too. Delivery by Makro was within two days, and we could track the driver’s arrival in real-time.

Whisky wouldn’t be my first choice of alcoholic drink, as I find there is often a really nasty after-burn in the back of the throat. This one, however, is completely different. It smells amazing, rich and biscuitty, and is lovely and smooth, no burn at all.

My husband enjoyed it on the rocks (the bigger the ice cube the better as they melt slower and so don’t dilute it too much) and I made an amazing Manhattan cocktail by mixing 2 parts of it to one part of red vermouth and a dash of bitters.

Definitely recommended!! It comes in a beautiful teal coloured box as well so easy to wrap if you’re wanting to give it as a gift.

A friend of mine turned me on to this about 40 years ago, and it has been my drink of choice ever since, with ‘upgrades’ to 15, 18, 25, and 40 year old now in my home bar. One of my grandfathers used to drink Canadian Club exclusively, since he was Canadian.

One holiday season, I brought over a bottle of 12 YO as a gift. He was reluctant to try it, and we cajoled him to make the stretch. He took a sip, then another one. He looked at me, and with a wave of his hand said, “Smooth!”.

It became his drink of choice from that point.

I love must of all great single malts and never my little bar being without Glenlivet. My father gave my very first dram of single malt and it was a Glenlevit classic 12 years old bottle,back on June 1969 celebrating the landing of mankind on the moon.

A solid 3 stars. NO ! But, there are no half stars. It’s more like a 3. 5 or 3. 75 star rating. It’s not the 12yo. LaSanta nor the 14yo. Quinta Ruben, that’s for sure ! But the price point, under $39, it’s really not that bad for a 10yo.

Single malt scotch. I can’t find anywhere if it is non-chilled filtered ? But you get the 10 years in American Oak barrels, so the vanilla or a vanilla bean flavor is there & some Tangerine or Mandarin Orange with a light or slight Lemon.

The viscosity mouth feel is a little on the thin side. And at best a Medium Finish. A little oaky/smokey aftertaste, not much, but enough to show it’s presents, is there. Online Glenmorangie says there is somewhere, a taste of mushrooms ?? I don’t taste that at all.

But the 43% Abv (86% proof) helps this Scotch !!.

This is a Highland Single Malt and the flavor profile is something that’s not my preference. The nose is fruity and malty; the definition of stewed fruits. It starts with buttery pear and apple , light caramel with powdered sugar.

Underneath the fruit is the dusty malt (which I don’t like) and flowers with faint mint. The palate is very delicate and silky. It starts with powdered sugar and canned pears then quickly transitions into spicy baking spices like nutmeg and cinnamon.

The flavors remind me of an orchard in spring while the trees still have flowers. The finish is quite everlasting of lingering oak, faint white pepper, and pear skins. Overall I have grown to really like this.

It’s so light and fruity compared to anything I normally drink. Given the price, I feel you won’t be disappointed with this bottle. The proof 86 but it doesn’t taste watered down. This whisky reminds me of an Scottish version of an Irish Whiskey.

First, I believe you must let a scotch breathe approx. 15 minutes before you can receive the true aromas and you must use your entire palate to recognize the true taste. From then on it is what each individual prefers.

I have enjoyed single malt scotches for 40+ yrs and for much of that time my preference has been Glenlivet 12 yr (readily available). During the last year I decided I would expand my horizons & do a taste test to identify my list of favorites.

I read reviews & picked 7 single malts to taste test. My wife poured 2 & I decided which I preferred. Then I continued to compare 2 & identify my preference (I was very impressed with Glenmorangie Original so I added 3 more Glenmorangie to the mix).

Glen Ness 12 yr ($27. 99) Choices 1-3 are excellent choices for that special treat, Choices 4-8 are very good as your regular selection & choices 9-10 are so-so (I eliminated 9 & 10 from my stock list).

I hope this provides a good starting point and you do taste tests to identify your preferences.

A stonking bargain at £20 bottle (Caution: can vary, up to £32). Matured exclusively in first-fill ex-bourbon American Oak. Auchentoshan say they select casks from both the top and bottom of their warehouse and marry them together to create American Oak.

Nose: Vanilla and raw barley. Notes are very similar to Irish blended whisky. Light brown sugar and freshly-cut hardwood. A slight overripe banana note underlies the rest and becomes more prominent as the dram rests.

An apparent oak character and a malty sweetness. Palate: Light bodied, but with a slight “simple syrup” texture. Melted vanilla ice cream, some oaky tannins, and mild toasted barley. Finish: Short. Slightly bitter.

With Water: I take mine with a splash and reduce the alcohol content to about 35% ABV. Overall: A value malt. The added oak character is well-executed. There is a banana note which some find pleasant (I do): some don’t.

£20is a very fair price for this light, straightforward unpeated malt.

Glasgow isn’t for visitors so much as for real Scots. I hoped that Auchentoshan, distilled in that area, would be equivalent. At the outset, let me say that I began exploring scotch many years ago with highland and speyside malts.

In the last 10 or 15 years I’ve developed a distinct preference for the peated Islay malts such as Ardbeg and Laphroaig. But I really want to have a favorite lowland, so I keep exploring. The nose is delightful and delicate.

Citrus (lime and orange) with a tad of toffee or liquorice and a hint of floral. It’s bright and consistent, not overpowering and I could sniff it all day! A lot of other reviewers–not on this site–have described the palette as bitter.

I would say that it’s more an issue of untamed alcohol–like drinking a blend that hasn’t aged enough and is too medicinal. Perhaps also the fact that it is dry–which I don’t mind at all. If whiskey were stereo music, I’d say that great whiskey has a thunderous bass note.

With the Auch 12 I get mostly midrange on the palette. There is a hint of ginger. I really don’t how this happens with 12 years of aging but it seems to me more like a very young whiskey. I’m going out on a limb here but I’m going to guess that, perhaps, the wood may have given all it had to previous batches.

It’s finished in oak and sherry. The finish fades to leave just the first impression–not at all bad but not memorable. The finish is drying. This is a good but not a great whiskey. It is priced correctly in the market.

The reviewer who says it competes with the great speyside 12s has a palette quite different from mine.

I don’t normally drink whisky but I had this come up as a free sample! So I thought it was rude not to try! It was actually the best whisky I have had the pleasure of trying! Definitely going to be purchasing a bottle in the future.

I may even try some others in the range!! Compared to other whiskeys this is by far the best and most definitely makes you want to enjoy more and more. I will recommend to my family and friends in the future! Go buy now! Don’t hesitate! Adam.

I really enjoyed this whisky – it’s very smooth to drink and similar to other lowland whiskies. It’s very much an easy drink (certainly crowd pleaser) with no harsh after taste or burn. In terms of tasting notes, you can taste subtle notes of vanilla and caramel.

Personally, this is my 2nd favourite to the 12 year in the Auchentoshan range but this is a lot cheaper and for this saving, there is certainly no compromise on taste I received this as part of a free sample but will certainly purchase again and would recommend to others!.

I found this scotch to be true to the label. Not overly peat forward (something I’m not a huge fan of) and nuanced flavor profile. With 1 or two ice cubes, it becomes dangerously smooth and opens up to a different flavor profile.

I’ll certainly be buying some more in the future.

I don’t like Scotch! You hear that more times than you’d ever imagine. Most of the time, someone had something that was way beyond their palate’s experience and hasn’t been presented with the right Scotch.

When I worked retail, I used to love it when folks would tell me they hated Scotch. I’d ask them what they didn’t enjoy, and it was either the smokiness or that it felt like they were chewing on Band-aids.

I’d offer them a sample of something that didn’t fit that bill, and they’d wind up walking away happy (with a bottle of Scotch in hand). I’d converted them!My first whisky was Dewar’s White Label, which is a blended Scotch made from 40 different malts.

It may not have been the best starting point, but it was dirt cheap and I didn’t know what the heck I was doing. I can tell you, given the chance to do it all over again, I would have started with something else.

I certainly wouldn’t pony it up as an introductory whisky to anyone. I mention Dewar’s White Label because its biggest component malt comes from the Aberfeldy Distillery in the central Scottish Highlands.

The distillery is owned by John Dewar Sons and has been in operation since 1896. It was shuttered briefly during World Wars I and II, but for the most part, this is a Dewar’s workhorse. Aberfeldy sources its water from the fabled Pitilie Burn, known for its gold deposits.

It is also the only distillery that pulls water from this river. Known as the ‘Golden Dram’, the distillery’s water source is the famous Pitilie Burn, renowned locally for its water quality and famed for its deposits of alluvial gold.

This 100% barley single-malt is aged in ex-Bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The distillery claims they lose more than a third of each cask to the angels. Bottled at 40% ABV (or 80°), you can expect to pay about $40.

00 for a 750ml, making this a low-barrier of entry single malt Scotch. One thing that stood out was a claim on the label that this is Limited Bottling No. 2905. After doing some research, this is akin to finding a bottle of Old Grand-Dad 114 and seeing Lot 1 on it.

You may think you’ve snagged something special, but it appears every label is printed with the same number. So, now that we’ve explored the background, how about exploring the whisky itself? It is time to #DrinkCurious.

Appearance: In my Glencairn glass, this single malt presented as a darker gold in color. There is nothing on the bottle that suggests this is naturally-colored, and there’s no reason to think it doesn’t have the caramel coloring Scotch may legally possess.

It created a thin rim that generated fast legs to race back to the pool of liquid sunshine. Nose: I could smell the honey across the room. When I brought the glass closer to my face, citrus and raisin were easy to pick out.

The milk chocolate, on the other hand, took more effort. When I breathed in the vapor through my lips, orange and vanilla coated my mouth. Palate: Considering the 40% ABV, the mouthfeel was full-bodied and creamy and was a nice surprise.

The whisky itself was simple to drink. On the front, I tasted vanilla and milk chocolate. The middle consisted of citrus, peach, and cocoa powder. Almond and oak rounded out the back. Finish: My first sip suggested a medium-short finish, however, subsequent ones morphed it to medium-long.

Similar to the palate, the finish was simple and offered honey, milk chocolate, and light pepper. Bottle, Bar, or Bust: Dewar’s White Label this is not. What this is is a nice way to introduce folks to Scotch, especially if they say they don’t like Scotch.

There’s nothing complicated about it, there’s no astringent (Band-aid) quality, there’s no peat smokiness. If you’re seeking a very easy sipper, one that would work well on a hot, humid, summer afternoon, Aberfeldy 12 will fit that bill.

If you only prefer complex or smoky whiskies, this one’s not for you. The price is certainly fair. Taking all of that into account, I’m conveying a Bottle rating for Aberfeldy 12. Cheers! My Simple, Easy to Understand Rating SystemBottle = Buy ItBar = Try ItBust = Leave It.

i always try to compare within the price range and not even within 12 year single malts. and even there it falls a bit short. it’s not bad. it’s just not good either. it’s thinner than i usually like and the flavors that are there are not overly impressive.

compass box artist blend is $3 more expensive and while it’s a blended scotch it’s way better. for $10 more you can get a highland park 12. what this scotch reminds me of is ballantines finest. which is a $17 blended scotch with a large grain content.

this is better than ballantines but it’s eerily similar. they say this is a huge component of dewars blends but i will say this. dewars 12 at $22 is much much better.

This scotch is certainly not for the experienced. However, it is decent for the price. It has the typical 12 yr aged front of the mouth taste, but on the back end (after swallowing) has more of a bourbon taste.

Again, for the price, it’s decent. But, for a couple bucks extra, you could get something more on-the-money. Glenfiddich, and their higher-priced comparator, Macallan offer more typical single-malt experiences.

This CHIVAS REGAL BLENDED SCOTCH, 18YR OLD, is either an excellent gift 🎁, or just something to warm you up on those cold nights, this bottle is GOLD SIGNATURE, With Colin Scott’s signature, as he is the master blender who created this.

It has a deep flavour, with layers of chocolate toffee, so even for me who is an amateur drinker, I find it beautiful. It is expensive, but that’s expected when you are getting this quality. I would definitely recommend.

I enjoy it because I feel it is smooth and has perfect blend and texture. I been buying this from many years now. I wish Total Wine would provide box for the bottle. When I am paying $55 plus tax for a bottle, I would expect an original nice box with the bottle.

It feel cheap when you walk out with your bottle in a paper bag.

A creamy, aromatic melange of vanilla custard, hints of aniseed, lemon curd and butter toffee. Wood shavings and dried banana chips develop with just a hint of cassis. Palate: More of those banana chips showing through on the palate, this time there’s a creamy hit of barley malt too, pepped up with a little allspice.

Notes of ground walnut and caramel. Finish: Light spice and black pepper on the tail. Lingering notes of cereal sweetness. Overall: A spicy, beautifully balanced blend. Lots going on here.

After having tried both Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12 and Highland Park 12, I bought this MacAllan 12 Yr double cask expecting something better and was let down. Sherry barrel aging in Speysides typically impart the almost prune-like sweet character from the Pedro Ximenez grapes’ influence, but this is lacking in the MacAllan.

Bourbon barrel aging usually produces vanilla, baking spice and caramel notes, but these are also lacking in the MacAllan. The peat element of the MacAllan manifests as an unpleasant bitterness, and the alcoholic burn is stronger than competitors.

The qualities don’t play nicely in the MacAllan, like a band that has rehearsed their parts well but the instruments are poorly mixed by the soundman during their live performance, creating a less than stellar experience for the audience who paid top dollar for their tickets.

The sweet, prune-like, cigar tobacco-like aromas and the vanilla and baking spice elements present in Glenfiddich 12, paired with its comparable smoothness going down, makes it a far more desirable Speyside than this MacAllan, which is much harsher and less pleasant on the tongue in comparison.

Odd because their production processes are very similar.

Ever since the Edrington group purchased Macallan in 1999, there has been a clear shift to profit over quality, and Macallan 18 sherry oak (the most iconic Macallan) suffers from this. We are seeing the first caskings of the Edrington era starting in 2018 (18 years after the takeover) with a clear drop in quality of this iconic scotch.

I last bought two bottles of Macallan 18 in around 2015 (the 1996 bottlings) and finally needed more of my favorite. The 2022 release is very smooth and drinkable without any unpleasant aromas or taste is a solid step down from the tremendous bottlings of yesteryear (the last amazing bottling was the 1995 casting which was sold in 2013-2014).

In my cupboard are Yamazaki 18, Hibiki 21, Glendronach 18, Aberlour 18, Glengoyne 25, and I always preferred the Macallan. With the drop in quality of the Macallan, I think I prefer the Aberlour 18 (I purchased six bottles in 2015 for 65 bucks each) regardless of the price.

Macallan 18 is still a quality scotch but I suspect Macallan’s reputation will decline as it no longer amazing scotch.

I have been drinking 12 year old Aberlour (still a favorite), but wanted to find another single malt for variety. This 12 year old Macallan Double Cask fits the bill perfectly for my taste (remembering smell and taste are subjective).

This is a smooth, aromatic scotch with very little bite. I enjoy my scotch on the rocks and this appears to bring out buttery caramel, vanilla and a hint of cinnamon. I also like it is not peaty. This is a scotch I would share with someone who is new to single malts.

It may be a little more expensive, but is a great value for what it delivers.

GlenDronach is one of my all-time favorite scotches. I’ve had a BOLO for the port finish for a couple years now. It is finally available in the USA. As I’ve said before, I’ve never had a scotch finished in Pedro Ximénez casks that I didn’t like.

Well, this is all the goodness of GlenDronach and all the goodness of Pedro Ximénez, with the additional finish of port casks. Wowzer! It is a beautiful dram – rich wood colors, with a beautiful burgundy hue from the port casks.

On the palate, a plethora of flavors pour forth across the full mouth-feel – blackberries, black cherries, plums, followed by strawberry jam and dark chocolate, finishing long with orange peel and a light black pepper.

Do not drink this unless you have time to enjoy it – you won’t be disappointed. It is excellent. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.

Glendronach was my last choice when buying a holiday gift, after all my fore choices were sold out. Happy to find for a shockingly low price, this scotch I picked from a “best of 2020” article that actually lived up to the hype.

Complex flavor, smooth finish, low but present peat, well rounded scotch. Appeased a group of serious scotch drinkers with minimal cost. Wish I could give 6 stars.

This bottle was $134. 99 earlier in 2021, and has since been price jacked outrageously to $185. To further dismay, the distillery is no longer labeling their bottles “non chill filtered” so you are overypaying for possibly sub par, chill filtered whisky.

And overpaying by a lot. It is still delicious, but for the price, spend it on something else.

At $37 or so how can anyone ding this Scotch? It out punches its weight class with every pour. Like these Aberfeldy Cats know what they are doing. If we could ever get the rest of the brand in stock I would step up to sample their heavy hitters.

Seriously, if you want a really lovely little Scotch thats like putting on your favorite slippers by the fire, this one is that and then some. For a GREAT PRICE for what it is too boot.

My personal taste in whisky tends to lean towards the island varieties, including Highland Park, Talisker, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Sprinkbank, etc. But I also enjoy a gentler Speyside whisky on occasion, so I wanted to give The Balvenie Double Wood 12 a try.

Having quite a bit of experience with younger whisky, I was a little taken aback by just how much of a young spirit profile was present here, with quite a rough mouth feel. It went against everything I heard about Balvenie Double Wood from others.

I walked away from the bottle for several months, leaving it about 60% full on the shelf. When I eventually worked my way back to the bottle, the oxidation really helped to polish off the rough edges and the flavor was much improved.

Notes of vanilla and honey were now much more present, but I was also getting a strong fruity nose, particularly of ripe bananas. The remainder of the bottle ended up being a much more pleasant drinking experience and more in line with the reputation of this whisky.

Perhaps I got a bottle from a rougher batch that just needed a little time to settle down. This was a good lesson to not give up on a bottle. Would I buy it again? Being honest, I would say no, as I enjoy the Balvenie 12 Single Barrel more for not a huge increase in price.

But it was a worthwhile experience and, other than the rough start, was an enjoyable dram overall. I would recommend to a friend as long as they keep their expectations in check.

Simply amazing. This is one of the highest rated scotches for a reason. I’ve yet to taste a bottle of this quality and I will buy more!! Nose: immediately I smell a bit of peat. Just a slight amount that fades into a oaky smoke that is so sweet.

It quickly turns into fresh apples and pears with honey. Palate: there’s a bit of spice up front immediately followed by a delicious sweetness. A dark fruit, sherry-like sweetness, follows that isn’t present on the nose.

Finish: long and very oaky, some peat then more tannins. So delicious. Makes me want more and more.

Balvenie 12 Doublewood is smooth with a lot of flavor. The nose picks up sweet with vanilla accents and a deep rich sherry finish. I feel this is underrated and hope it stays that way. My current daily drinker.

The greatest thing about Scotch is the experience and like all experiences, it’s different for everyone. I like to think of myself as more of a Scotch explorer than a connoisseur. One of the things I like most about Scotch is the variety and variations from one to the other.

This includes year over year as Scotch varies from one year to the next. Over time, my preference of one to another changes. As an example, my favorite daily drinker for years was the Lagavulin 16, a fine smoky Scotch with plenty of complexity, a worthy spot in anyone’s collection.

Most recently the Balvenie 12 Doublewood has claimed my daily drinker spot although the Walker 15 sneaks in every now and again. The Macallan 18 which for some reason (maybe it’s because I do not drink it that often), always makes my top spot.

It’s just a really good Scotch. I mix it up as to how I take it depending on what experience I want to have. Neat is great for those times when you want the deep notes from the woods and are looking for the real deal.

I usually take it on the rocks so that the flavors smooth out a bit and I can get more complexity from the Scotch. The only time I put a splash in is if the alcohol content is high to take the bite off.

For many years, maybe going back to the ‘Northwest Airlines’ era, Glenlivet was on the drinks trolly on flights from Boston to Amsterdam and back. Then, the exact time escapes me, 4-5 years ago, the Glenlivet disappeared from the flights now on Delta that acquired NWA in 2009.

The single malt onboard, the Macallan, is only available in Business Class. As a Million Miler, I request and usually get a dram or two. Still miss the Glenlivet. Thanks.
