12 Best Windows Hello Webcam (2022 Updated)

The webcam function well but found some problems with it. Windows Hello works well when is position on top of the monitor. When is placed on the desk Windows Hello keeps failing to login. Second problem is when webcam is set as the default video and mic in Windows, it will not recognize in some voice chat apps like discord.

I had to manually configure discord setting to specify use the webcam. Lastly, no driver support. But once everything is setup properly. The webcam works great.

After getting used to using my face to unlock my phone, I wanted a camera that worked with Windows Hello for face-recognition login on my desktop. This camera works wonderfully for that. Windows didn’t recognize the camera as a Hello device initially, but after a restart everything worked fine.

Video quality is good too. Happy with my purchase.

Absolutely terrible, never works. Windows Hello will register your face without a problem, forget ever getting it to actually work. I would return it but I used my Lenovo Rewards to pay for it. Meaning I can return it and get literally zero Rewards back (yes, Lenovo will not return points even if you return the product).

The Lifecam VX 3000 comes with an install disk. Don’t touch it. It is out of date and probably won’t work with Windows 7 and almost certainly will not like Windows 10. The disk provides alink to Microsoft for dowloading a newer version.

This link will lead nowhere – error 404 as will Microsofts own site. I found that by just plugging the camera in, Windows installed good enough drivers on its own and I binned the disk. Video quality is a bit 990s.

This product is quite old and not supported by Windows 10, so it was difficult to install drivers and find the cam, but we did it. The camera was used for tracking IR LED project and was perfect for designed resolution and project cost.

We are very pleased with the result. But for original use I would recommend get newer webcams that are compatible with windows 10.

If you’re using this with anything modern, turn back now. The software that you need to get this thing working works great on old Windows XP machines, however you’re going to be fiddling with it for a while to try getting it working on anything newer.

The image quality is bad, but what can you expect from something from this time period. In conclusion, it’s good for older hardware, but honestly you’re better off just spending another 5 or 10 bucks to buy something that works better with modern hardware.

Now if you are a photo/vid nerd just walk on by. Plugged it in to Linux and it worked better out of the box than most web cams, the exception so far was the raspberry pi thing I put together at the beginning of lock-down 2020ish.

So what do you get manual and auto focus Yes yes ability to pan and tilt when using the lower resolutions, nice colour balance. under windows this thing was better though had some issues using OBS and other webcams.

The field of view is nice and wide though not to wide with a sweet spot for focus whether it be auto or manual where everything out side of the field of focus naturally blurs out. All in all this is a tool that is better than most laptop built in webcams!.

Has been covered in other reviews here so can only add to them and concur; decent quality for the price but the random autofoucs is painful. To make it worse, Microsoft doesn’t support it with software so I can’t even access the camera to change it to manual focus.

Fairly cheap but I wouldn’t have bought it if I knew then what I know now. Pay a little bit more for something better unfortunately.

Bought this camera for my home office setup. While image quality is pretty good for the price you pay, the autofocus is just killing all the experience. Camera would refocus every few seconds even when I am not moving, completely blurring out the image before focusing again.

Not a very nice experience to say the least. Reading online it seems to be a common “bug” with all of these MS webcams, with only fix available is to switch to manual focus. So beware.

Needing to replace a good quality but aging Logitech webcam, I was encouraged by the Scan reviews for the Ausdom 1080P and it arrived promptly. The camera was fine, in both natural and artificial light, but the mike was really unclear; to the point that others on my workgroup were complaining and I had to hike the Logitech out of the recycling bin.

We persevered,with the Auscom though, spending an hour going through the various settings. We made a little improvement, but it was not a patch on the old Logitech and certainly not good enough for presentations.

Scan ‘Help’ came back to us after 24 hours and perhaps, with effort, could actually have been marginally less helpful. I offered to link up by Zoom to demonstrate the problem. That’s not allowed! All I was told was that the instructions were sent with the webcam.

If there is a problem, here’s the address of Auscom in California. Auscom’s response. after two weeks. nothing. Meantime, I also happened to be buying a cheapish soundbar [not from Scan] to replace old speakers.

Coincidentally it has a built-in mike which is perfect. So now I am using that for the mike. Auscome 1080P. good camera, rubbish mike. Scan after-sales service. shoddy!.

Marketed as a business webcam ideal for skype/zoom/teams/etc. Has great resolution and produces a nice clear image. Ausdom only lists this camera as being Windows compatible, but it works on my Mac desktop with no additional drivers installed.

Cannot comment on the microphone because I use a headset for conference calls. However a couple of negatives – firstly it has a suprisingly wide field of view, capturing most of the room around you if you are sitting more than a foot away, secondly it doesn’t have an indicator led, so you have no idea when its switched on.

This webcam was a huge step-up from using my phone, especially when it came to audio! When recording my sample video, the video seemed slightly out of sync, but this was not a problem I experienced with Skype or other recording programs, so I’m certain it was the software I was using rather than the camera.

Here are some things I love about this little webcam. It has lovely crisp, high quality HD picture. Don’t forget to adjust the lens to focus like I did the first time (I thought it was blurry, but it was basically my own fault).

Once focused the image is really nice and clear and details can be seen. The audio is so much better than the audio on a smartphone, so this is going to be amazing for recording my youtube videos. I love the style, a lot of webcams come in that circular shape that reminds me of a creepy little eye, but this one looks like a little mini camera.

It has a nice sleek black and silver design too. But hands down my fave feature of this is how it attaches to the screen. I’ve found many webcams have a really old fashioned way of attaching, or don’t work well with modern thin monitors, but the Ausdom cam has a flexi-bendable foot that can be positioned into a stand, or used to grip onto a flatter screen like mine.

This means it should work with any type of monitor and I loved that it was so easy to attach to mine compared to other webcams which want you to balance them on top. The only con I had with this product is the software it came with.

I found it wasn’t very easy to navigate and didn’t seem to have a way to start recording (only snapshot). That being said, it’s very easy to install your own software and if using for Skype, you don’t even need one.

Since so many people started working from home, webcams have become borderline essential equipment again. Unfortunately, webcam designs haven’t really kept up with changing designs in tech. All through the pandemic I’ve been using a venerable C920 from Logitech.

And it worked… mostly. The visuals it produced were still good but it leaned over a bit too far into my display area and had trouble gripping to my curved monitor, leading to it frequently falling forward onto my desk if my dog bumped into something and made it shake.

I’d been thinking about possible upgrades for a few months when the Brio 500 caught my eye, and I decided to give it a shot. And oh my, what a difference ten years can make. The brio is a bit chunkier than a lot of the previous webcam designs you might be used to.

The cylindrical body adds a lot of volume, and there are significantly more moving parts than any webcam I’d previously had experience with. But with that comes a lot of much needed flexibility. The stand feels almost infinitely adjustable compared to what I got with the C920, and can affix to a monitor either via friction or an adhesive pad that does an admirable job of holding it to the back of my curved monitor.

The mounting point to the camera itself can flip 180 degrees if needed, intended to allow you to quickly switch to showing documents on your desktop during a video conference, and when you don’t need it you can just fold the whole thing back behind your screen to keep it out of the way.

There’s also built in strain relief since the camera itself is held by a magnet rather than permanently affixed, so you don’t need to worry about a cable snag pulling it off your monitor (or pulling the monitor off the desk.

) Which is all to say that the thing finally stays in place and out of the way on my curved monitor, something I imagine a lot of people with similar hardware can appreciate. The stand isn’t all the camera has going for it though.

Image quality on this thing is great by webcam standards too. The HD image it produces is crisp and has surprisingly good color accuracy (though, it must be pointed out, still inferior to a proper handheld camera.

) It comes equipped with a wide angle lens with a ninety degree field of view, which means it can easily capture three to four adult in the frame. This makes it ideal for home use where you’re likely to have people crowding around the camera or office conference rooms.

Of course if you’re like me and only plan to use it for solo calls there are options to change that. Using either the Logitech Tune or GHub apps you can restrict the FOV to something a little tighter via digital zoom, as well as manually configuring the image to match your preferences.

Audio is provided by an array mic which offers decent noise isolation, though I suspect most will prefer to stick to headsets if they have the option. And the rotating privacy screen does a good job of blocking visuals – though it doesn’t completely cut the hardware connection.

There are a few downsides to the Brio 500 I should mention though. First up is that unlike some of the other cameras in the Brio line it does not come with the IR camera needed for it to work for Windows Hello facial recognition.

I also found that the magnetic coupler on the camera, which doubles as the plug for the integrated threaded mount, tends to unscrew at the drop of a hat. If I need to turn the camera to the side at all it tends to start to unscrew, making it easier to just pull the whole thing off the magnet and clip it back on at the right angle.

Also it should be noted that this particular model only works with a USB-C connection, which still tend to be a bit sparce on most desktops. Overall I’d recommend the Brio 500 for anyone working from home with an unusually shaped monitor, hosting video calls with the whole family, or looking for a good video conferencing solution for smaller conference rooms.

So I work from home multiple times per week and my job entails a lot of important meetings with consultants and managers etc and my camera on my laptop was just grainy and not suffice for reliable so had to source and alternative.

Well where do I start with this amazing web cam it’s extremely easy to set up and get going even for people that may not be so tech savvy. It’s not huge but big enough to know it’s of great quality, its well built and easy for me to pop into my laptop bag wherever I go, the webcam is easy to clip onto my device using the clip and works just as well on my laptop as my PC.

The lead is hard wired into the bag of the camera and then usb into your computer/laptop which is great as some have a usb into the back of the device and over time can because worn and not great. I love that no matter what light or setting I am using the webcam in it always adjusts to ensure that I am visible and clear to my audience.

I use this a lot on Microsoft reams for my virtual meetings and I’ve been very impressed with the quality of the picture, I have important documents I need to show which come up crystal clear but also can tilt the camera to the surface I want to show.

The microphone is clear and never cuts out or goes off so another positive. If you need to be away from you camera, or would like some privacy for any reason there is also a shutter that comes over the camera easy to apply you just the side of the device and this pops a shutter over so you are still on the meeting and can hear and see but the audience cannot see you just a blank screen.

The coverage of the camera is great, so rather than just my head/face in view I am fully in view and able to show documents in my hand and they are fully visible and clear to my audience. I can’t really state any faults with this as it’s absolutely perfect for all my needs and have had some colleagues ask the brand and type of webcam which I have happily shown.

Over all would highly recommend this webcam it’s not like your standard webcams and has so much more to offer.

The logitech, Brio, 500 is by far the best WebCam I have owned. For years we have used logitech WebCams first with WebEx, and most recently primarily with Zoom and Microsoft Teams. The image quality and automatic adjustments to light and color are the best I have seen.

WebCams are quite important in business as they will make some individuals poorly present themselves during important meetings. This camera seems to quickly adjust and require little changes in back lighting and front lining to get good normal appearing skin tones and a clear picture.

The microphones also work very well and these are quite important also in meetings, especially if there is more than one person on your side or you are a competing with background noise. The amount is excellent and well thought of.

No matter how well design the mount having something sitting on top of your monitor or laptop screen is often quite awkward. The system provides for an attachment cradle which allows the actual WebCam to be placed and rotated as needed for the function of showing your desktop or a graph, or perhaps a printed paper more quickly then taking over the zoom meeting to share your screen.

The WebCam was instantly recognized by my already installed G hub software, which I use for gaming mice. And essential feature in my opinion is a physical camera barrier for privacy. Please keep in mind that this unit requires a USB-C interface on the computer you’re using it with.

Several even newer computers may only have one of these ports. If it is technically possible, it would’ve been useful for a logitech to include a USB a adapter.

The Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 is a pretty solid camera at a solid price point. I needed something that just “worked” but that wouldn’t break the bank, for some nighttime gaming sessions with friends.

It does struggle a bit in really dim lighting (brightness will change here and there), but in daylight and more evenly lit settings this thing is awesome. With some fine tuning, it’s easy to kind of get the setup right.

In terms of the rest of the setup, on Windows 10, all I had to do was plug this in and it was instantly recognized. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a 720p (pretty decent resolution) experience for less than $50.

I purchased this cam for school and Walmart had the best price. As many other electronics items today, this item did not come with instructions. So, depending on your system software, the intended usage, etc.

you may need to download drivers, and most likely you will have to learn how to set up and use your cam separately. Once that’s done, the picture quality is okay and the lighting and color aren’t bad either.

The BIGGEST complaint against this cam is the constant hum, ringing, and noise coming from the camera’s microphone. I have worked with MicroSoft IT department several times, and the humming/buzzing was reduced but NOT REMOVED!!! So, if you are looking to use this cam for interfacing with coworkers for business meetings, family, or even making You Tube videos, keep in mind that they will hear the constant buzzing!!! Unfortunately I do NOT recommend this webcam.

Bought because my Dell laptop camera and speakers stopped working properly and don’t have time to get it fixed. Out the box plug it in and off you go. Just make sure the camera is selected in the settings of whatever video using software you are using.

The picture is clear and it is so much better at balancing light – I work by a large window and it copes really well, so I am not just a silhouette. The sound pick up is pretty good too, but I am using headphones anyway so not really used it much.

I would definitely recommend this for home working and chatting to friends and family.

This is one of my favorite web cameras that Logitech has to offer. It’s small and easy to connect to any computer. I have a 2019 MacBook Pro with usb-c connections which means I had to buy an adapter to use this device because it is a usb connection.

Not the end of the world but I also didn’t need a fancy adapter for it to work. It features a swivel camera which was nice when several of us were on zoom calls to easily move the camera rather then getting up and changing seats.

The picture quality was outstanding compared to the camera built into the Mac. I definitely would recommend this device to someone who is looking for a great web camera but doesn’t want to spend boatloads of money on one.

The logic tech 615 digital webcam is a great option for people working from home or just conducting everyday zoom meetings, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, or any other platform. It is important to understand that this isn’t going to be something you’re going to use for everyday live streaming such as twitch your YouTube page and so on.

There are two options to adjust the camera settings. The first is native to the computer itself, which in most Microsoft operating systems are the bare bones minimal camera settings that you find in the windows display.

These are very minimal they don’t do a whole lot. The other option is to download the software from the lodge tech website. This allows you more editing I guess, but there are options you can set the camera up for you know wide-angle closer view.

Other areas you can adjust are brightness, exposure, and a few other minor options. In low light, it doesn’t perform that well there is a lot of noise in the image. Although this can be remedied with some simple lighting options, such as table lamps fluorescent lights, etc.

, etc. Overall, this camera does what it’s supposed to do. for the price point, I wouldn’t expect much more again you’re not going to vlog or anything like that. In my experience most of what logic tech offers other than the newer brio, that is their sole purpose live in-person meetings over a platform.

Not a very good image with side lighting in the room. One side of the face is completely white, the other is dark if window is close to PC. The cable is short. 32in. The cable is enough to connect to a laptop, but all laptops have their own camera.

But the cable is too short to connect to the computer box if it’s on the floor near the feet. People made the camera, packed it, brought it from China, put it on store shelves,. They did a lot of things to sell it.

But they saved on 2 feet of cable, which costs 20 cents in China. A good example of how one stupid decision can completely ruin the use of a good thing. And now these Logitech representatives are offering customers to buy an additional cable that costs $5-8.

Almost half the price of the camera. Not the smartest joke from Logitech.

This camera is said to be certified for Skype. I used it with the current version of Skype on the current update of Windows 10. The picture is very dark even compared to Windows’ Camera app quality. Skype does not have any camera controls, as well as the camera itself.

Unlike Logitec, Microsoft did not produce dedicated camera control software. Sometimes Skype does not even recognize the camera while the camera microphone works okay. Camera design is about 10 years old, however, it is still offered by Microsoft in their online store and one might assume that it should be compatible with the current Microsoft systems.

But it is not the case. I am disappointed. I would have returned it if I did not get it for half of the regular price.

My high-end Logitech Fusion web-cam never worked properly on a consistent basis with my system. Logitech support wasn’t able to help so I finally gave up and decided to try the Life-Cam VX-3000. The Life-Cam VX-3000 is my 5Th web-cam since the late 90’s.

So far, it’s the best I’ve ever used. My main purpose for the web-cam was to communicate with my family in another state, in both video and audio. I have to say, mission accomplished. The size of the VX-3000 is more diminutive in size than I expected.

I included a photo so people get an idea. It looks a lot bigger in the photos than it really is. It also fits a lot snugger on my Dell 19 inch LCD monitor than did the Logitech. Because of the base design, I can put it flat on the desk or hook it on top of the monitor.

The main review I read from PC Magazine states that the mic did a poor job so I was a concerned as the audio is almost as important to me as the video. The fear was unfounded as I tested it with my family for over an hour and they could hear me just fine with only a slight echo when I placed it too close to my speakers.

The video resolution is 640×480, more than enough for my needs. The VX-6000 has higher resolution, but is also more than twice as expensive. I was very satisfied with the video and the low light support was excellent and worked better than the Logitech Fusion.

The Live Call button on top of the camera is actually a nuisance when trying to adjust the angle of the camera. I don’t see myself ever using it and only works with Windows Live Messenger anyways. The cam itself swivels vertically and horizontally.

The vertical swivel is actually quite stiff so you need to hold the cam with both hands to adjust. I guess it’s a good thing so that the cam doesn’t get out of position easily. The cord is also a decent length so if you want to pick the camera up and move it around, it gives you some freedom to do so.

The only thing lacking that I would have wanted is a sliding lens cover, both to protect the lens and for privacy. I went back and forth on wanting the VX-3000 and the VX-6000. The comparison table shows that the VX-6000’s only benefits are 3x digital zoom, high-speed USB and a wide angle lens.

I know that the video resolution is also higher. For me, I didn’t need the digital zoom. Also, I didn’t know that there was a difference in USB. I thought all USB 2. 0 was “high-speed. ” The instructions on the web-cam recommend connecting to USB 2.

0 so what exactly is “high-speed?” The wide angle lens would’ve been great, but not worth the extra cost. Certainly, the two most compelling reasons to get the VX-6000 is the wide angle lens and the higher video resolution.

Based on my needs, the better value was the VX-3000. The version of the drivers that came on CD-ROM with the cam was 1. 1 but I downloaded 1. 3 from Microsoft’s website. I have to say that after some weeks of using Windows Live Messenger, it has a habit of getting disconnected quite often.

My family has observed this as well. Until Microsoft remedies this, I may have to switch over to Google Talk with a video plug-in but the webcam itself, is exactly what I wanted.

This product was discontinued a LONG LONG time ago and the reason(s) are obvious. The picture quality is BEYOND BAD! Setting up/installing on a computer newer than Windows 7 is difficult at best. Shop around, pay a little more than you might have planned for and get something new and with better picture quality.

Bought this camera for zoom/team calls. A few things to note: 1. This webcam works on a mac. I’ve been looking for a webcam for a wfh setup and saw issues with Logitech products where they have compatibility issues with monterey.

I tested my luck with this one and it worked (at least on zoom and teams). However, If you try to use the camera on Facetime then it won’t work as it’ll just show up in black and white with very blurry images.

There is also a free app (CameraController) on github that you can download to adjust your camera settings, again the image will show black and white like on Facetime but the setting adjustments still work, you can just turn on zoom and see the changes there.

2. This webcam is 720p at 30fps, at least that’s how it’s performing on zoom. I was able to get 1080p using my cellphone as a camera on the same zoom call so it’s not a zoom limitation. 3. Windows hello works! Which is really neat given the price point.

Closest equivalent for windows hello would be the Brio which is over $200. 4. The privacy shutter is awesome, which is built in and you can control with a simple slider on the top of the webcam, one key reason for purchasing this webcam, other products on the market with clip on privacy shutters just look awful.

Overall, 3 for performance given it’s only 720p instead of 1080p despite the name claiming to be FHD. If it’s the hardware is capable but lacking software then Lenovo needs to fix that. I tried this on windows as well and only getting 720p, so it’s not a OS issue.

4 for features given the windows hello capability, built-in privacy shutter, but really lack software to support this product comparing to other vendors like Logitech. 4 for value if you can get this on sale, would not rate 4 if this is at original listing price until they make it 1080p.

5 for reliability for now as I did not run into any issues with it so far, very easy plug and play webcam.

I am a graduate student at the University of Calgary, I have an aging Acer laptop that overheats, has a microphone problem and has network connectivity issues that had given me difficulties when attending online meetings and presentations.

I opted to get this webcam to use at the end of the term with my desktop, so I can “peacefully” conduct my term’s final presentations. The issue is it did not arrive on time; I ordered this on March 16, 2021, the webcam was supposed to ship within a week “max”, of course, it didn’t and I had to follow up with customer service that didn’t recognize the delay at first, eventually, they shipped it on April 08, I finally received the webcam on April 19 unfortunately due to the delays in shipping my term presentations and meetings were over too.

The manual that comes with this webcam is for the 510 FHD webcam, and the OS also recognizes the webcam as the 510. I cannot vouch for the product’s reliability yet, though Lenovo normally has had good build quality in the past.

the video feed is clear and windows hello is functional. A disappointing first experience purchasing from Lenovo timeliness is not an area of strength in my experience.

My only complain is the controversial product description which appeared on the Lenovo site itself which claimed that the camera had digital zoom. Zoom capability text was later removed! Turns out that indeed there is no control software bundled with the camera to enable digital zoom (and of course at this price point it doesn’t have optical zoom via an adjustable lens, fixed focus, fixed angle of coverage only) It can however be digitally zoomed with third party camera/broadcast suites.

Works well with Zoom and Webex if you are OK with a super wide angle view which you get on the default Windows camera. If you want to have just your face show up in a full frame view you will have to place the camera right up close to your face.

I am using OBS (free open source Broadcast suite worth trying) and I can manipulate the view coverage a lot with that.

Did not research webcams much before deciding on the C925e. Was already in use in workstations across building. Makes a nice picture. Plug and play across Windows10 laptops. Improvement over laptop cams.

But once in the virtual classroom with multiple participants and a video platform compressing every video stream/picture you can’t tell what camera is “HD/720/1080” or better than any other. Mic pickup and quality was adequate, but we used better mic for presenters.

The camera angle adjustable features worked across all monitor set ups. Camera doesn’t clamp on, but had enough adjustment range and stayed put for presenters.

I bought this webcam to get better lower light video and resolution than my ten-year-old webcam. It met this low bar easily and was extremely simple to install, essentially plug and play. And by lower light, I mean simply a normally lit room at night.

My minor complaints are: -Inability to rotate the camera when it is attached to my monitor. -The focal length of the camera is short, that is, it has a wider angle than I would prefer, which results in some distortion.

-There does not seem to be a software option for controlling the camera before using it in video conference apps. I tried a few options that let me zoom and shift brightness and color, but my changes don’t stick when a video conference kicks in.

I suspect that there is some software solution out there, but I have not found it. Overall, I would definitely recommend this webcam if you simply need an easily installed, reliable, and decent video camera to perch on top of your monitor so that your image is aligned with the screen that you look at.

It’s similar in image quality to the webcams that you get with many new laptops, but if you use a separate monitor, you can put this webcam to a better position away from the laptop.

I bought this primarily for use with occasional video conference calls I attend, such as our condo board meetings. It was easy to connect and was usable with no particular setup issues. (PowerSpec B742 tower computer running Windows 10.

) I did, however, load the auxiliary management software, which is not difficult to use. The only quibble I have is with the physical mounting. It comes with a built-in clip that is supposed to hold the camera head on a monitor.

Unfortunately, it appears my two monitors are too ancient. The monitors I have are about two inches this at the top. The clip, however, only works with a monitor about one inch deep. I am able to hold it in place using a piece of Gorilla (TM) Tape (or something similar) provided I’m careful when dusting off the monitor.

I work remotely and I bought this because I needed better quality video for zoom calls. The camera is just ok. It is really zoomed in and there is no way of zooming out. It’s kind of nice sometimes because every now and then I may not want people to see my room.

The way it clips onto my laptop is pretty unstable and it falls off my computer a lot. I have a dual monitor set up and the light from both of my monitors makes the video super exposed. I tried different lighting in my room and I even bought a ring light type of light to see if it would help.

It made it worse. In calls my face looks super bright and you can barely see any of my features. It’s just not great. I would return but I already tossed the box.

Due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic the use for webcams is higher than ever, and Logitech’s C505 is a great choice if you are looking for a decent and reasonably priced model. Of note, it also has a slightly narrower field of view than many webcams, both external and built-in to laptops.

This results in a slightly more “zoomed in” view that may suit your needs better, depending on where you can best set the camera up. I received a C505 from Logitech in exchange for testing it and providing this honest review.

This review reflects my opinions after using the camera for multiple Zoom meetings. Logitech’s positioning of this camera in its line-up is pretty clear – it lacks the 1080p capability of higher end models, but also retails for significantly less.

Considering many popular video calling/conferencing programs commonly limit video to 720p resolution (or lower, for larger groups of participants), the lack of 1080p video from the C505 is nothing to really worry about.

In addition, the C505 only captures mono audio – but again, for everyday video conferences, this is insignificant. Many headsets only support mono audio, and not all video call software supports stereo audio anyway.

Compared to the C920, there are some other “creature comforts” given up by the C505. For instance, the mount feels a little less solid and it is not threaded for tripod attachment. These seem like reasonable tradeoffs for the price.

Logitech designed the C505 with a narrower field of view – about 60° diagonally, as compared to 78° on something like the C920. This means the camera will look more “zoomed in,” showing less space to either side of the subject.

(In 35mm camera terms, these fields of view roughly correspond to slightly more than a 24mm lens for the C920, and slightly more than 35mm for the C505. ) The webcam built in to my laptop seems to be closer to the 78° field of view, so the C505 definitely has a different “look” in that regard.

This can be advantageous in a few ways: it can help fill the frame with the subject better, and allows one to position the camera slightly farther away while keeping the subject at an easily visible size.

In fact, Logitech seems to have intended the C505 to be a good choice if you need to place the camera beyond arm’s reach. Its USB cable appears to be 18-24″ longer than the C920. Logitech also touts the long-range pickup capability of the built-in microphone.

The people on the other end of my video calls reported good sound volume, so I have no complaints there. (I did not use the C505 from extreme distances, though – I pretty much used it in a pretty normal set-up with the camera no more than 4-5 feet away from me.

) The C505 was also completely plug-and-play. It worked great on both a Windows and Mac laptop. I even briefly tested how well it could stream video using a Raspberry Pi running Linux, and that worked without issue too.

The Logitech C505 is a good value webcam. It will work great for video conferences with coworkers and virtual visits with extended family members and friends. And it won’t break the bank in the midst of surging demand for webcams.
