20 Best Winter Horse Blankets (2022 Updated)

Fit is great. Keeps my horses warm in bad weather. They?re the typical horses; have a barn to get into, but insist on standing outside in the wind and sleet, snow, cold rain, etc. So, as use humans do, we feel bad and insist they be covered by something.

This does the trick. My girls love their blankets to be honest. They seem to know now when I bring them out, as they come to the gate as if I have their feed or something! They are easy to adjust, easy to hook up and I?ve never had one come undone, even after a weeks worth of wear.

I do remove during the week to check for debris and such, but still don?t find any latches unhooked in the meantime. Even with one being a master at nibbling and untying things, even she seems to not be able to undo them.

We are in Northeastern Kansas so it can get fairly bitter in the winter, especially if the winds pick up, and even my thin skinned and short winter coated TB manages well with this one.

I ordered 2 of these blankets for my senior Andalusian mares, one of which is underweight and we live in Minnesota. I was impressed when they arrived at how nice they are. They fit great, no rubbing, and were pretty easy to put on except for the buckle situation.

The buckles on the “belly straps” are a strange hook type contraption which was hard to buckle up and also hard to unbuckle. Also unfortunately one of the belly straps has already ripped off when my horse rubbed up against the gate and it got caught.

I guess that is the safest thing but it would be nice if it was some sort of a quick release type of buckle. Anyway one of the blankets is wrecked after just 3 days and doesn’t seem repairable but I am hopeful that the other one will last through the winter.

For my next blanket purchase I will definitely look at the buckles first.

Adequate for the price. I would rate higher if it had more quality front buckles. This blanket is very ‘economy’ grade but is weatherproof and has so far not caused rubs or broken in any way (i bought two of these for different horses).

The whither pad is neoprene, the front buckles have cheap clips but they work fine. the elastic on the T-hooks for the belly bands has already stretched out so as not ‘forgiving’ around the barrel but if the blanket is adjusted properly, that does not matter.

LOVE this blanket. Added this weight to round out my full neck Avalance blanket and sheet set. These are the best products. I don’t use any other brand anymore. These are superior in every way. Living on Long Island we get all weather all the time.

Temperature variability is constant and it comes with all kinds of precipitation!.

Love the colors and fit of this rain sheet. I am in Florida and it rains a lot but is very warm. This gives my mare weather protection without overheating, with an ample fit and room for her shoulders.

Love the quick clip front and the option for leg straps or tail strap (they send both) for the rear.

I am very sad to give this product a low one star rating. We purchased two of the same blankets for two of our same sized standard donkeys. The first blanket in wine color was a perfect fit. This blanket in a blue color was completely different blanket.

It arrived and when put next to first blanket, was 2 1/2? smaller in length as first one received and leg straps were 12-15? too short at the longest length. The same product, same size, same everything except different color but received completely different and lesser quality product that didn?t fit and rubbed sores on the back of my donkeys legs.

We ordered due to an extreme cold front and I had to sew extensions to the leg straps to make it fit my donkey. I was very unhappy with this second blanket. After we used it, it was dirty and I was not comfortable to send back for refund.

Not satisfied with this situation at all. Beware to all! Measure product before you put on your animal and I advise don?t depend on this for emergency.

I got this for my mini donkey because of last years snow storm, I wanted to be prepared for this year. She has never needed a blanket but the ice was a real problem last year and I had to put her up and she doesn?t like to be away from her herd mates.

So the blanket was the perfect solution and she loves it, it fits perfect and it?s so well made, no adjustments or alterations needed. I like the closers, they work great for her shape. The material is sturdy and water rolls off keeping her cozy without over heating with too much insulation.

The color (purple) is vivid and beautiful.

Perfect for miniature horses/donkeys. I love the Plum color option! The 250g fill provides great protection from wind and cold, I do not blanket my mini’s until the temperature gets below 30F, this blanket provides enough protection until about 10F (with wind, then they are stalled with lamps.

) However there are drawbacks, the blanket fits a little tight at the chest and withers, and is loose from the girth back. It has only one girth strap, that makes it very loose around the belly (it is intended to be a foal turn out though.

) The elastic surcingles for the back legs are an excellent addition, but make sure you loop them properly (right surcingle to right ring, left surcingle to left ring with the surcingles crossed in the middle and not too tight.

This way helps prevent them from getting a leg caught if they do manage to get the blanket off. ) Overall, I am very pleased! I have bought three, one 40″ and two 44″ blankets for my miniature donkeys in Plum (lovely color!).

My cat has herpes & kept having bad flare ups to where her eyes looked painful & the medication we’d been using wasn’t helping too much anymore. I found this & gave it a try & it cleared up her nastiest flare up after 1 dose……it’s amazing.

She now gets a scoop everyday in the morning mixed w her wet food, sometimes we do every other day, but starting off definitely do it everyday. I’ve bought 2 or 3 jars maybe? and we’ve been using it for 1-2 years.

Truly amazing, even though it is just L-lysine, my cat takes to this better than the treats. Pretty kiki w clear eyes <3 also if ur cat has herpes, your other cats can get it if they aren’t vaccinated against it, pls vaccinate ur babies.

I bought this blanket actually three of them and received them two days ago. When I got them out I was beside myself excited and was happy with the look and construction of the blankets. I knew they ran small so I ordered larger sizes.

Got them in my horses and I was happy. I went out the next morning and the blanket on one of my horses was ripped about two feet. I’ve never had a blanket rip like that and not after 24 hours. I went to take it off and there is a seam in the top and on the seam the water leaked in.

Today I checked another horse and again that blanket is tipped. So I got 48 hours out of that one. That blanket the belly strap has come off every time I go out as well. Don’t waste your money. I thought because it was heavy canvas it would work great but it’s terrible.

I bought them for only 32 dollars but when you figure I got one day use out of them it’s the most expensive blanket I’ve ever bought.

If you turn your horses out in a big pasture all day and are not able to constantly supervise them, this is not the blanket for you. Within a week, one horse had a rip down his blanket’s side. In less than 2 weeks, I was kept busy readjusting them.

I found that the buckles for the hind legs were problematic. They were not the usual snaps. They were like the buckles on the belly straps. With all the hind leg movement, they easily bounced loose (unlike a snap).

The belly straps were not the usual criss-cross. That was another problem. They did not keep the blanket secure enough. Once the hind leg straps got loose, the blanket would ride up to the front of my horses’ bodies.

Even before coming loose, the belly straps would loosen enough for the blanket to spin more to one side. One horse had the blanket wrapped around his neck and entangling his legs. Also, these blankets are certainly not protective in rain.

They end up soaking in the rain, which can chill a horse. Comfort: 1 Durability: 1.

I don’t recommend this blanket. Not only was it a bit too snug for my Arabian horse but the belly strap is MASSIVELY long. We had to tie it in multiple knots to allow him to wear it. The fitting is quite terrible, but the worse part was when we had a slight mist and next thing the color is washing out and dripping blue all over my white horses legs and body.

He’s had blue legs for weeks. Lastly, it says to hand wash the blanket which seems ridiculous to me. There will be blue color everywhere in your tub!.

I bought the Mio this season at the recommendation of a friend. My horse is unclipped and has a very thick coat. The challenge is to keep him dry without making him sweat. We have found the weight of this blanket to be great but unfortunately, it ripped horizontally right across the shoulder.

The size was correct – roomy, not tight. My horse is not hard on his blankets and typically has them for years. I just ordered a second blanket and hope it holds up better. Horseware Ireland – please see if you can make this fabric tougher – our shaggy babies need a TO sheet like the Mio.

Best light weight blanket have used, fits great true to size even if one goes up one in size still can adjust buckels and tighten. Mare is sometimes 84 but depending on brand and blanket could be 81.

She is 15 hands, quarter average build mare with nice quarter widthers. I find a 81 is great for a light weight sheet but in a medium blanket with padding maybe go with 84. Blanket is true to be waterproof as they could be.

I used others and once water is entirely on blanket the blanket gets heavy, Mio blankets have repelled water for most part. Drys fast if hung dry off horse in dry area.

I originally bought these for my 2 warmbloods. My girls go out during the day and in the stall at night. The set the 2 girls are wearing now are 7 years old. I have another new set for them. I just bought 2 more for the QH and TW mares because they block the rain and cold wind while they are out during the day.

I would love to have midweights for all 4 mares in this brand. Next time I purchase those, i will consider buying amigo bravo.

This turnout sheet fits my Dutch gelding perfectly. It stays perfectly in place with no leg straps. I like the “disc” front closure, although I was a little skeptical about it when I ordered it. This sheet does run a little smaller than the Rambo sheet of the same size, which was okay.

I ordered a size larger after reading other reviews regarding Amigo turnouts. My only complaint is that there is already some binding that is loose on the rump where the stitching has given way. So I’m not sure how well it is going to hold up.

I would recommend it to a friend.

Not for a bored/smart horse. My horse will wear blankets for years without issue. The first night he had this sheet on, he opened all the Velcro in the front, making the plastic front closure come off.

He proceeded to presumably step on it and break it. Then in the process of getting the blanket off, he ripped a giant hole in it. I do not recommend this blanket.

My horse is 28 and was on pasture board for 19 years. I tried Avalanche in 2017: rain sheet, medium and heavy blankets. They are a perfect fit and in very good condition. This “light” is the same insulation as a “medium” but the lining is different.

Now he has 2 mediums, 1 medium with hood, 1 heavy for real cold and snow, a regular rain sheet and 2 rain fleeces that are sheets with fleecy lining. Why so many? This is Maine. We moved in 11/2020 to a barn with stall and huge attached runout and – get this – unlimited blanket changes.

Staff chooses what the weather calls for. I can keep my retired self at home. These are extremely well made with topnotch materials. They have adjustments and clever touches that keep him warm and dry without rubs.

Great bargains this time of year starting with Dover.

This comment refers only to the Zebra patterned fly sheet. This is the only solution I have found to relieve sweet itch in my pony. I could use fly spray, but the cost of daily sprayings far outweighed the price of the sheet.

Plus I did not like my pony being covered in chemicals. My pony lives on 160 acres of bush/grass pasture, and she is in a 30-horse herd. I thought I would be lucky if this sheet lasted more than a couple of days; it lasted 4 months! We had horrendous hot weather in 2021 and this sheet kept her cool and comfortable.

I expected pulls at the neck because it is all one piece, but it never pulled on her, or rubbed. For anyone with sweet itch (alergies to no-seeums or midges), this sheet fixes that problem. No more rubbing raw for this pony.

The sheet also keeps the flies away, and will also keep the flies away from the horse standing next to it. Apparently Zebras evolved to fix their fly problem!.

This blanket did not last much more than a month. The piping over the front seams started coming off on the left side within 24 hrs. and the underlying stitch began to unravel. I ended up resewing it within a week.

Now it is all happening on the right side too! Today I found that the material above the leather looking “darts” in front are splitting. Worst waste of money. My horse doesn’t have a big area to run and get into horse-play so I have to assume it’s just a poor quality item.

These should last much longer! I just ordered new blanket from a competitor.

Ordered this for a QH/Mustang cross, not a chunky girl. The neck fastening is novel; I like the Velcro arrangement on this better than on the WeatherBeetas I usually buy. The two snaps that fasten to a single ring at the neck is clever also.

However, the neck opening seems a bit snug at the chest and there is no adjustment. This will be the first night she has worn it, so I guess, “we’ll see. ” At least the snug fit should help keep the blanket in place.

I also like the THREE straps across the belly which should also aid in keeping the blanket where it belongs. What I DIDN’T like was the absence of any elastic in the strap that goes under the tail, as well as the fact that it IS nylon and wide enough to be potentially irritating or downright painful.

The blankets she normally wears don’t have an under-tail strap, so that makes me a little nervous. Plus, those always get filthy right away, which is annoying. What I thought were nylon leg straps turned out to be a single strap above the hocks from one side of the blanket to the other.

I prefer actual leg straps, and I prefer them to be elastic or at least have elastic at the ends. Not having leg straps that you can cross seems like it puts all the responsibility for keeping the rear end of the blanket in place rests mainly on that tail strap.

The material is 1000D polypropylene rather than the 1200D fabric I’m used to. Though the entire blanket is lighter-weight than a Medium/Lite WeatherBeeta, tonite in a high wind it does seem to provide a little more warmth than the WeatherBeeta, which is a plus.

This will be our first experience with polypropylene, so we’ll see how it wears, comparatively speaking. So. the jury is still out on this, but it does have some features that seem like they make sense.

I’ll update this or re-review once we have had more experience with it. I ordered it because at this time, WeatherBeeta does not seem to make a high-neck Medium-Lite. We’ll see how this brand stacks up.

If it stays put, I have high hopes for it.

I have never owned a Horseware Rhino but I have owned the Rambo and Amigo lines before. Horseware seems to hold up well. I am trying this Rhino line on my appendix and paint mare this year. We live on a hill with nothing to block the wind from whipping through here.

They do have outside shelter but I am trying the heavy weight blanket this year as opposed to the medium weight blankets i have been using due to the wind chill that makes it colder than actual degrees.

After measuring and purchasing and returning several blankets, I have found that both horses even with their different builds measure at a 78 and wear a size 78. The 75 is too small so in my case the original Horseware instructions to subtract 4 inches from their true measurement does not apply.

Paint is a stocky build at 15. 2hh and the Appendix is about 15/15. 1hh. My only complaint is I wish the Rhino line also had the clear plastic tail cord cover like my Rambo does. I will prob goes to Lowes and see if I can find something similar and safe to construct my own tail cord covering.

The first time I got one of these it took my little beagle three days to chew a hole through it and then another three or four days to get all the peas out of the pod. I have subsequently bought her about four or five more of these and she goes through them much faster.

All the dogs enjoy them and while they are not meant to be sturdy, they are meant to be destroyed, they still last longer than I expected. Both she and I love them. I just wish they come up with some new shapes so it might take her longer to figure it out.

Horse was out in light rain and got thoroughly wet under the brand new Derby rain sheet. Not happy. The fit was good. The fasteners were easy to use. But worthless if it leaks. Horse was out the day before in heavier rain with his old sheet and came in dry.

Today with the new blanket and less rain, he was soaked.

My basset absolutely adores this toy and it is her new beloved toy. BEWARE!! It crinkles!! I was unaware it was a crinkly toy when I bought it. I tend to stray away from crinkly toys as my Luna loves to get into things she shouldn’t! I would absolutely buy this item again due to how much she loves her new taco!.

So pleased this fits her just perfectly. I have older Kensington sheets and winter blankets I used on her. This year tried other brands and nothing fit as well as Kensington. Bella has her new 2019 light weight winter blanket and looks quite comfortable in it.

I have a High Brow Cat/Smart Little Lena bred gelding that is 14. 2 and has a lot of muscle. This blanket fits him better than any others I?ve tried. Neck cover fits well. He looks really good in it.

It is also well made and durable.

I purchased this blanket to replace another. The weight and thickness of the blanket is what I had hoped for, but I was not expecting to be really tight around my quarter horse mare’s chest. I have always bought a 75 for her, but this one was way too tight around her chest to the point that if I hooked the buckles in the front they squeezed into her chest.

The buckles in the front do not have any adjustmenuts to them and are fixed at one length. I had to buy a chest expander, which are sold every where else but the Unitem States, to fix the problem. I was lucky that the chest expander expanded just enough and not too much to make the hassle worth it.

The rest of the blanket is great, but their straps in the front need clips that adjust more specifically to a horse’s size. Comfort: 2 Durability: 3.

One of the best Amigo rugs to date. Amigos are a perfect fit for ponies. This is warm, fits beautifully, my mare is very cosy and comfortable and as a 200grm her 100grm fits nicely underneath in very cold weather.

The neck is detachable and is roomy with a good length. Keeps its shine even when laid on in the stable. Thoroughly recommend this rug and well worth the money.

These stable blankets are soft and warm. It’s great to use them for our horses when they have been out in the field for the day / night wearing a stiffer waterproofed rug. This gives them a warm indoor rug for comfort (kind of like yoga wear / pajamas for horses when you want them in something but not a turnout blanket).

Also great for using as a liner with a turnout sheet.

This is exactly what I have been searching for. It is medium weight, perfect for layering under a turnout sheet or another blanket. It is 1000 denier outer, so a little more durable than some other stable blankets on the market.

The lining is like a microfiber cotton, so it is sticky. It’s fine for my warmblood, fits him perfectly. But it could be really problematic and uncomfortable if it doesn’t fit right and pulls and binds on their fur.

But for me it’s perfect!!.

I just had the opportunity to use it this week during a sub-zero cold spell. The blanket fits perfectly and does not move around like any of my previous blankets. Even though he measures 80″, the 84″ blanket fits him to a tee.

He has been able to sleep in it without any movement. The hood seems a little long but he does not mind. I recommend this blanket. He is a stocky Appaloosa with a long body. He also, due to significant arthritis in the stifle and hock, stands with his weight on one back leg which with previous blankets has caused the the blanket to shift but, this one does stay in place.

Great quality! Love this blanket for my stocky QH. Fits true to size and doesn’t shift around. Has held up well through 3 months+ of WI winters. My gelding is turned out 24/7 (with shelter) and this kept him warm and dry! Purchasing another in a different weight.

I have other Amigos blankets with the high neck and like the option of the v-fit front but that can remove neck cover if want. This one seems to drop down on the side more too which I like. Fit true to size for my guy.

81″ Hvy Weight.

I bought this to get through the remainder of the nasty winter when my old heavy bit the dust. I have two other lighter weight Horseware blankets, a Rambo and an Amigo – both fit my horse well in a 75 and are too big in a 78.

For some reason this one is about 3 inches too small – maybe they haven’t accounted for the added fill in sizing? Having to return and size up to a 78. This blanket seems to run small.

I have many Baker products and they stand out in terms of quality and fit. My 16. 3h Shire/Holsteiner cross stays warm and dry despite frequent rolling in the pastures and Ohio’s cold and wet wInters.

The buckles are sturdy and easy to use. The blanket washes well in Teflon safe detergent. The only con is that the liner causes static but a little static guard or a spritz of diluted fabric softener sprayed on eliminates that.

I expected this to be of good quality because of the Baker brand, but was very disappointed. It fit my horse well, but it soaked completely through the first time it rained. A turnout sheet has one job to do…keep my horse dry.

It failed to do the most basic thing it’s intended for. Don’t waste your time.

I bought the ARMORFlex® Challenger V-Free® Fit Closed Front Heavyweight Turnout Blanket – Bellyband 72 Black/Gray in a size 72 in 2020 for my show horse. My mare is a short, wide reining-bred quarter horse and I’ve had a hard time finding blankets that fit.

I live in southern Wisconsin, and this has been my go-to blanket for two winters now. It have been tested extensively both indoors and in daily outdoor turnout. I also purchased the attachable hood, which clips to the blanket easily and stays in place.

My horse does not inflict an unusable amount of wear and tear on my blankets, so I cannot say how they would hold up if you have a blanket destroyer. I do have a few small holes in the hood (less that one inch in diameter), but the rip-stop fabric kept them from growing and I was able to patch them easily.

All my clips and straps still look and function as if they were brand new. I can visibly see the difference in my horse’s coat – it is slicker and shinier than with blankets of other brands.

This blanket leaked. See photos. But customer service was the best that I have ever experienced, ever! If given the option from SSTack, I will write another review regarding the replacement that they shipped IMMEDIATELY! In general though, my horse is a Missouri Fox Trotter, normal size 75.

The 76 fit. I could “snug it up” a bit through the shoulders and withers. It shifted only slightly during a 24 hour period. We’re in CO so need this for snow storms and single digit temps. I ordered medium weight as he has a good winter coat, shelter, and 24/7 hay.

Very nice weight, seemed better than other brands in medium weight. I blanket as little as possible, only for severe weather and extreme conditions. Take a close look at the chest snaps/buckles on this blanket.

I would prefer something better, but that’s just me.

4 stars for quality. Overall, it is very well made. My only gripe is the brass tone hardware: it looks flimsier tban the hardware on the lower priced rain sheet I ordered for comparison fit. The fit was perfect for my 14.

3 Arabian gelding. I ordered a 66. Was most pleased with the vertical length fit. It hits just below his belly. The other blanket hung down an extra foot and would likely get stepped on when rising from the ground.

The cutback is perfect for him and really improved the fit over the other blanket. The shoulder adjustment is nice but not needed in his case. Purchased this for pre-freezing, rainy weather. Plan to use it only as a rain turnout between 30-45 degrees.

Haven’t had a chance to use it so cannot speak to waterproof-ness or durability. Would appreciate more color options than green or blue.

I LOVE SmartPak sheets and blankets, the Ultimate ones with the 10 warranties at least. This is the first Deluxe one I’ve gotten because it was on clearance and it was a stocky fit and their old stocky fit ones fit my quarter horses perfectly.

Anyway, I got this sheet on January 21st, had it on and off my horse since today (January 31st) and the white piping has been totally and completely ripped off the blanket. I have no idea how this happened since the part of fabric that ripped off was in the middle of 2 other pieces of fabric.

This horse isn’t particularly hard on blankets, he’s had an Ultimate one for 2 years and it isn’t showing any wear and teat on it. Also, the sheet didn’t appear to be compromised at all the night i put it on, and hes in a stall with a run by himself so no rough housing occured.

I’m going to continue to use the sheet since it doesn’t seem to be severely compromised, just the piping is gone, but I’m going to be surprised if it lasts the rest of the season. I was initially happy with the quality and fit of the sheet, that’s the only reason why I gave this 2 stars and not 1, but I’m only going to spend my money on their Ultimate line of blankets and sheet from now on.

I’m just glad I bought this blanket on clearance so I didn’t have to pay the full price. I’ve been trying to add the pictures that I took of the damage but the website keeps saying the files are too large too add.

I just received this blanket and fitted it to my horse bc snow is forecast for tomorrow. The rating is based on initial reaction to the quality (high) and functionality (also high). Since the top layer is made from 315 plastic bottles, I expected it to have a plasticky feel, but it really doesn’t.

One complaint I have right off (not a surprise, it’s in the pictures) is that the fleece over the withers is white. Stark white. It’s cheap looking and will get dirty immediately. Idk what they were thinking, but a color that coordinates with the blanket would be so much classier.

Wouldn’t have to be the blanket color; it could be a trim color, which means most of them could be navy or black. And if they insisted on putting the same color on all the blankets, it should black, not white.

Functionally I’m expecting a lot from this blanket and if it doesn’t perform, I’ll revise the review or delete it and start over.
