20 Best Wired Doorbell Chime (2022 Updated)

The wood screws for mounting are a little skimpy. The electrical terminals are close together, and the clearance could be better, although this seems to be true for other models. Traditional solenoid and rectangular steel bar bell design reminiscent of 1960’s-1070’s era.

The sound is a little thinner than vintage traditional doorbells, but adequate. Only took a few minutes to install. Affordable.

I really like the mechanical sounds; way better than any other artificial sound. I just replace the old electrical one with this chime. Never rely on battery, simply design, no complicated circuit, no chips of any kind, nothing can go wrong.

will not buy because all needed items are not included in the stated price. requires you go to another site to order a transformer….one stop shopping is all I will bother with!

When I installed a new Ubiquiti video doorbell, my old digital door chime no longer worked consistently. The transformer was supplying enough power but that early 2000s chime just didn’t play nicely with the new doorbell.

As long as I had to buy a new chime, I wanted something that fit our family’s aesthetic and used mechanical chimes, so I settled on this NuTone chime. Installation was simple, and the chime is loud and clear.

Critically, this chime works correctly with my video doorbell. I didn’t encounter any of the problems mentioned in the other reviews with the chimes being out of alignment.

I purchased for my parents. I was a bit disappointed in the volume. Some said it was super loud but I found it difficult to hear more than 2 rooms away. The wiring diagram and explanation was worse than terrible.

I had to go you tube to wire it up.

This chime will continue to ring when it’s in a 2 bells setup. So if you need another bell on another floor, you’re out of luck. Also if you have a lighted door button, the light will not light. The good thing it’s loud and has more then 2 notes so you’ll unlikely miss someone at the door.

And the sound plates did fall out, I had to put them back. I returned this one and got the LA70MA that does work with the 2 bells setup and now everything is just like before.

Paid more ($26) for this unit thinking it would be a higher quality chime inside and it was exactly the same insides as the $14 unit that failed. Save your money if your buying NuTone, might as well get the cheapest product because the insides will probably be identical.

The doorbell switch is what failed on my setup. The doorbell is also NuTone and I took it apart and it is the cheapest junk that I ever saw. If the switch fails shorted it will blow either the transformer or chime (in my case both).

May even cause a fire. My wife said she smelled something burning and it was the chime due to a failed door switch. This NuTone stuff is not recommended. The doorbell switch uses an incandescent bulb – should be LED for long life.

NuTone is still stuck in the 60’s with their designs.

This door chime is a true door bell. It has a pleasant tone and is small and unobtrusive. The plastic housing is available in either white or beige, but it can be painted with any 100% acrylic primer/paint.

Just remember, paint only the outside of the cover, and paint the cover detached from the chime. I have 3 of these in one home powered by a 16v 30va transformer. Installation is easy and takes at most 10 minutes.

Tools: blue masking tape, 12″ ruler, level, sharp pencil, drill & bits, and screwdriver. I have no idea what the previous reviewer was saying in her review. I can only surmise that she has neither the understanding or experience to work with electricity.

So of course, it’s the doorbell’s fault.

Unfortunately, this doorbell is much too quiet for a two-story home, especially if you turn on the TV or listen to music sometimes. If I’m in the first-floor family room with the door closed, I can’t hear the doorbell.

When we’re upstairs and it’s quiet, we can barely hear the doorbell and with anything playing, forget it. We’ve missed visitors because of this defect. It’s only 65-70 dB, which is quieter than a vacuum cleaner.

If you live in a larger home, buy something louder.

This doorbell has lovely tones, it is worth the cost and effort to install. But a huge FYI – if you are replacing an existing “builder grade” doorbell be careful: this chime requires a constant 16VAC source.

It will take additional wiring to to provide 16VAC to the chime and a dry contact input from all doorbell buttons. If you are handy with electricity this is no problem, if not, an electrician may have to install it for you.

If you’re building a new house, no worries. I like mine.

They have REALLY cheapened up the quality of these over the years. One of the notes on mine has more of an off-key “thud” than a ringing quality. even though it is properly seated and adjusted. Reading through the reviews – I see I’m not the only one with this problem.

It is NOT the tradition Westminster chime – but a sort-of, similar-sounding arrangement of notes. What used to be brass tubes are now a cheesy bright gold-plated aluminum with an equally cheesy looking sparkly brushed finish.

The pickled maple finish on the cover really didn’t fit our decor – but it was not too difficult to strip, re-stain and refinish to the shade we needed. I plan on trying to tweak the tone at some point – possibly replacing the chime bars with different ones – wish me luck!.

This doorbell was relatively easy to install, we had issues with the first one delivered. We contacted the manufacturer Nutone who ascertained it had a damaged motherboard, which was why did not work.

We spent hours trying to get it operational, After contacting Nutone we contacted Handleset. com and they did the right thing immediately and sent a replacement item at NO COST to us. The replacement works well and we are very happy with it.

The 8 note chime is a little odd as it is not a true westminister tone, but starts out as such with the last 2 notes being random. The sound is easily heard and I like this doorbell. The wood case protecting the metal chimes is beautiful.

This replaced a 30 year old westminster chime doorbell that I purchased from Fortunoffs. Handlesets. com is a terrific company to do business with. You will never have to fear if you receive a lemon they will stand behind their merchandise and replace the damaged item!.

I chose this doorbell because of its vintage style. It has not been installed as our house is still under construction. However, I know I will not be disappointed as it will be the perfect accessory to our front entrance.

The doorbell came one day before they said it would. I was very pleased with and easy to install very loud doorbell it is a nice thing for me to have cause I am hard-of-hearing. Best door for the money.

The ding dong sound comes from a mechanical mechanism–see pics. There are two vertical metal bars that generate the sound. It is loud enough, and sounds like a ding dong, rather than a thud or coming from a speaker.

Not sure why people would want it much louder since that would be really jarring when in the same room as the bell. When you press the button on the door, it dings, and doesn’t dong until the button is released.

Mine is hanging above ear level, so the fact that the cover hangs from the top of the bell frame is not a big deal in my house. Hopefully, posting photos will let you better evaluate what it look like.

I like the clean, contemporary appearance. Note there is a piece of foam in the pic of the white cover that since has been removed. If you wonder what it sounds like, go to the NuTone website, look up the model under door chimes, and there you will find a sound clip.

This is a brand new chime from about 5-10 years ago. Still relatively modern. This time is capable to accepting external 16v transformer voltage, or being self-powered through 4 C sized batteries. The cover is a very bright white with no signs of yellowing.

The chime is nice and loud for a mechanical chime. It has a dual tone for the front door, and can accept a rear door input with a single chime. The cover does not snap into place, but rather is hung loosely over the internal mechanisms.

You’ll want to hang it high enough so that it is not bumped, or else it may fall off easily. Overall it works as advertised and is a good value for the price. It sounds the same as an older Broan chime from the 80’s but has an updated look.

The design and color makes this a beautiful doorbell chime for any home. Basic plastic materials but it is affordable. The two-tone chime it makes is also very pleasant and relatable, which exudes a sense of elegance and calm to match the look of the device.

Highly recommended if you want to pair with a high-tech video doorbell that requires hard-wired chime.

My husband installed this Prime Chime Plus Door Bell Kit with two buttons about a week ago. It works perfectly, you can hear the chime in any part of the house, it’s loud, clear and not too loud either.

The only reason for giving 3 stars out of 5 would be the process of installing the device. It took way longer than my husband first anticipated, and he is a home and roof contractor. So he has installed many different kinds of bells befofe.

Some more complicated than others. So when he read the instructions he thought it would only take a few hours. Instead it took about a day and a half. Other than set up and instalation this door bell system is good quality and functions perfectly.

I was so excited when my electrician came to install my new prime chime doorbell. He easily installed it in just a few minutes and also connected it to my nest doorbell. This was a total upgrade from my old traditional doorbell.

This kit includes 2 bells for your front and or side or rear doors. I do not have a side door and have 2 back doors that are not accessible unless you climb a 10 foot fence. I decided to put the second bell next to my bedroom so my kids can ring the doorbell instead of knocking while I have my door closed.

This was a good replacement for a previous doorbell that needed to be replaced. It works great and ive had no issues with it at all. The chime is loud enough to hear throughout the 1500 SF house. Definitely a good product.

Compact and unobtrusive on the wall. This is not the highest quality doorbell on the market, and has a somewhat “cheap” sound, but it does the job, and is certainly adequate for the reasonable price.

I want a good product door bell so I can hook it with my new Nest Hello bell and they work so perfectly together.

I replaced an expensive Nutone doorbell that wasn’t giving the dong (just the ding), even after I switched out the transformer. This doorbell gives a nice ding-dong sound, its slightly louder than our old doorbell.

The tubular look is sleek and expensive looking. Super easy to install. I recommend this doorbell.

Has a much much better sound than our original chime. Also installed a new transformer to get the correct voltage. The chime looks are very good (RG color), a huge improvement. I also installed an Arlo Video Doorbell, which works wonderfully with the chime.

Love the device. Shipping was quick, packaging was appropriate, product works as advertised. What’s not to like?

After installation, the two tone solenoid stopped hitting the upper bar to make the second tone. I didn’t even put the cover on yet! Seems like the spring for the two tone solenoid is too weak. I already threw out the receipt and packaging.

Now it’s coming back to me. I bought this doorbell so I could be warned about people at the front door of my house. One side effect is that it makes my dogs go absolutely crazy so I’m only giving it 4 stars.

Works as it should. Is not so loud that it is annoying but some might want it to be a bit louder. In my opinion it’s just perfect. Very easy to install.

I looked for a long time to find a classy looking doorbell for my new home. I needed one to work with my Ring Pro doorbell so that eliminated some of the ones that have multiple chime patterns. I was hesitant to buy it because of the price (thinking it would be cheap), but I was pleasantly surprised; even though it is plastic, it is very nice looking! Once mounted up high on wall, you cant tell that the housing is not something like wood, and blends in with my decor beautifully.

It looks good, but it’s so quiet I’m the only one who can hear it if I happen to be upstairs. If I’m downstairs or have headphones on, it’s not going to be heard. I had to reschedule a house call because I couldn’t hear the doorbell, even though I was expecting the worker!.

I bought this mechanical chime to replace an outdated one to for pairing with my ring pro video doorbell so much of my review and experience is from dealing with how those two products interact. The wiring is standard and interacts very easily with the ring power kit.

The chime is loud enough to hear in the entire house, although ours is small (1,400sq ft). I only leave room to improve because there isnt a straightforward locking mechanism for the chime cover (which is beautiful but cheap plastic) and it seems like it could fall and possible crack.

I like this. Internal transformer means no ugly wall wart plug. Never a situation where the batteries run out, as there are none. Wired connection to the button means that there is never a situation where a signal can drop out.

Also, the constant 8v supplied to the button means that you can use an illuminated button. I’ll never use wireless again. This is so much better and more reliable. The design is minimalistic. No stupid selectable tones, or flashing blue LED nonsense.

Using mains is more reliable and cheaper with less maintainance. Once it’s installed and running it can be forgotten about. The chime is plenty loud enough, and I like that it’s generated throgh a mechanical solenoid, instead of a tacky pre-programmed electronic chip.

Great doorbell, but. Be careful which model you purchase. The information Byron provides could be a lot better. They just state ‘Wired’ or ‘Wireless’. So is it 240v (mains), or 8V (battery)? All it needs is an input voltage on the packaging and in all the specifications! The installation instructions could also have a bit more detail.

For the 240v version, they should be advising whether earthing is required. Couldn’t see a double insulated symbol anywhere (a double insulated symbol means no earthing required). Otherwise it appears to be a good product (1 weeks use).

Easy to install and connect to a bell push, with the transformer built in it looks neater and saves having other connections elsewhere. Decent quality for the price. I used this for a ring door bell installation the chime doesn’t actually chime when using it for this as I only wanted it for the transformer and wiring to connect up, but if removing the ring bell if you move house say, you can then install a normal bell push and it works as it should.

I bought a new condominium three years ago. My doorbell stopped working. I unscrewed the Nutone PB4LBR pushbutton to find the plastic inside broken. However, crossing the wires produced no spark or chime.

I brought in an electrician who checked out the transformer and pronounced it to be not functioning. He replaced it, but still no chime. “All three components can’t be broken. ” However, opening the flush wall mounted chime – LA14WH – revealed that the spring loaded plungers were broken.

We had a Nutone system in my house growing up that worked for decades. They don’t make ’em like they used to.

We have had Nutone LA 174 and it is an excellent product of great quality. We wanted to Install NEST Hello Doorbell camera and LA174 is not compatible. Nutone recommended LA14 as a replacement for LA174.

Heeded the recommendation and purchased the LA14 from Amazon. The unit arrived with clear instructions but it is smaller than the LA174 and hence the recessed wall cutout has to be modified which is not a simple task since it requires cutting sheet rock and try to locate the matching paint.

Nutone should make it clear this is not a one for one fit. Also, could have supplied Chime mechanism that fits into the LA174 box but that requires some thinking and design.

Home builder installed doorbell and chime. Model LA14WH button stuck down multiple times. Builder installed new button and it stuck while we were gone. Came home to a frying sound and have a ruined chime and button.

Will not replace w this junk.

Bought this as I had a 10 chime hard wired/wireless melody door bell that came with resistor to make standard door bell work as I had it hard wired. This would not work with the Bell doorbell camera even with the digital relay,(minus resitor)sometimes it worked, but most of time the door bell just kept on playing would not shut off.

This resolved all of the issues with Bell’s doorbell camera no relay or resistors required. Sucks I can’t have multiple tunes but I have a doorbell that works now or I can shut off in bell smart home app as before I just disable it via app.

Includes all the parts needed. Very good price! Replaced 45 year old version with lower voltage. transformer. Interfaced with Lorex Video doorbell.

I just finished installing this doorbell in a 100+ year old house. The house hadn’t been previously wired for a doorbell. The most difficult part was fishing the wire for the front and rear buttons. The Heath Zenith is an old, time-tested design.

I like the soft bell sound, and the differentiated bell sounds for the front and rear doors. I plan on installing a Skybell doorbell camera on the front door eventually(it requires powered doorbell wiring).

For the price of this doorbell set, you can’t go wrong.

Good replacement for already installed chime that failed. Only problem I had was the wiring which was not a problem with the chime itself but me not carefully identifying the existing wires once disconected from the old failed unit.

I required a meter to figure out the power wires as opposed to the wires to and from the switch. This information is required to hook-up new chime correctly.

The chime and push buttons were easy to install. People got used to my doorbell not working but now with a lighted button it is obvious a new one is there.

Good value on a budget door bell kit. Wires are not included but a trip to the local hardware store solved that. The chiming unit is rather small and cute, tucked up at the ceiling you will hardly notice it.

I needed a cover for my doorbell, so the fact that this was a defective doorbell suited my needs perfectly. I simply took the ugly plastic cover off and replaced it with this beautiful cover. I am very happy with this purchase.

I have to say that the looks and chime quality are very nice, compared to others that are out there today. As a 50 year old person who grew up with NuTone (L22) Chimes, that were installed in a 1967 two story house, I prefer this type of wired Doorbell – Door Chime.

After ready some complaints about the sound volume, may I make a suggestion to Broan/NuTone? The reason for low sound volume is that there is no opening in the plastic cover for the sound to escape. This muffles the sound quality greatly.

If a rectangular opening was located along the top area of the plastic cover, the sound could escape out of the cover. This would increase the volume output that people are talking about. I hope you continue to make this model.

The brand sells itself. Nothing more to say. But still you’ve got to wire it, and by the way, I wouldn’t disable a hard-wired doorbell for a battery powered one. It took me 2 hours to get it right because the idiots who rented had two sets of door bell wires coming out of the gang box on top of which the height of the chime was 9 feet high.

But this item deserves a Nutone lighted bell ringer. Too bad Broan/Nutone doesn’t provide a ladder with it.

Pros: doorbell looks nice Cons: saddest chime ever! You can’t hear it at all. My husband and I make jokes in our lowest whisper voice imitating the chime on this doorbell. It’s such a joke. I’m sitting 10 feet away and can barely hear it.

Pathetic. And if you change to the one-chime setting, you’re really screwed. You won’t be able to hear the second chime to second guess whether you heard the doorbell.

After searching for years, I purchased Spore’s Ring Doorbell Chime to replace the enormous ugly chime that was in my 1950s house when I bought it. After 4 years with wires sticking out of the wall, I decided it was finally time to finish this project and couldn’t be happier with my simple new chime.

The bell looks great and was easy to install, but it is really quiet. The bell comes with a plastic striker installed. The noise it makes could barely be heard outside the foyer. The bell comes with a metal striker you can replace it with.

It is louder, but not much. I don’t think you’d hear it upstairs with a radio playing. It’s fine for a small, one story house. But I wouldn’t recommend it for a large house.

I wanted a nice looking doorbell chime since it’s very visible in my foyer—something that wasn’t just the typical white plastic box. This one is certainly unique and my builder and others have commented on how nice it is.

Got the polished aluminum to coordinate with other silvery finishes in my house, but I do wish it came in a brushed/satin finish. It was just installed by electricians in a new construction house. The chime is quite loud and has a classic ring, not an electronic ding-dong sound.

Some may like it and some may not, but it’s fine for me and I will definitely be able to hear it throughout the house which is good. I coordinated it with the Spore True Illuminated doorbell button which has not been installed yet (still some painting to do) so I can not comment on that component yet.
