20 Best Wood Deck Primer (2022 Updated)

This stuff is thicker than typical primer keep that into consideration when applying. Provide yourself with extra square footage so you have enough. I started to run a little short, but maybe because it was so think and I didn’t even it out as much.

It dries quickly so you need to be prepared to work as such. Must do primer before the marine paint. What a. difference. I used this in our new enclosed trailer and man this is durable paint. Doesnt scratch or show marks at all.

Highly recommend.

i assume it’s the product i ordered but it arrived in a can that bore no label coming anywhere near the appearance of the illustration nor of the previous can of the (presumably) same product i previously purchased elsewhere.

haven’t opened the can yet so i don’t know if the appearance of the content is consistent with my previous experience of “this” product. i do know that the product i previously bought elsewhere which had a label similar, if not identical to, the illustration, performed well and that’s why i ordered another can from Zoro.

This is a high build primer that fills well. If put on thick it will be slow to dry compared to most automotive primers, BUT, this is for both fiberglass and wood which is what I needed for repair, fabrication, and mold work.

The marine primer and topcoat seem to remain somewhat flexible which is needed with fiberglass. I haven’t tried this as a “tie coat” with other products yet. I have used it over 2 types of resin, quality wood, and bondo filler with good sealing and coverage results.

I have not tried it on epoxy yet.

This primer does none of what it claims. You can scratch it off with your nail I tested it on several surfaces once I found out that it did not stick to a sanded tile (nor the unsanded one, as it claims it does) Wasted a lot of money because I only discovered this by accident, after the whole project was done!!! Written to Rust-Oleum SA and will see if there is any feedback.

I used this product to prime kitchen cabinets that had a black plastic type coating. I gave them a light sanding and sprayed on the primer with a Wagner Flexio 590. I thinned the primer 10% with water.

It gave a nice smooth finish. I sprayed a white melamine finish for the top coat. Very pleased with the finished product.

We have trim around our windows and it’s made out of a metal framework which after wear and water on the house will tend to get rust spots in some areas even though it’s painted. I found this product and it’s fantastic.

It’s super thick so it doesn’t go as far as you would expect for the quart size. But the thickness makes sense when you think about what it’s made to do. The primer coated the trim work and filled any holes that were present.

It dried very quickly and we were able to paint over it the same day. I will definitely be buying again.

I myself don’t actually use the product, I just order things. I have never heard any complaints from the folks that do use the products. We purchase a significant amount of paint, primer etc and we are repeat customers.

Excellent product, We have abandoned the primer that we have used for the last ten years and use this product exclusively. It works really well for us especially on aluminum which we deal with extensively.

Used on 1970 whaler. Probably should have used some high build first but I didn’t I just used several coats of the 545. I sprayed it and it looks awesome

I bought this to prime 3D printed parts and it worked great. It’s my first time using spray paint or primer. I read the instructions and its pretty straightforward and worked fine. The first couple things I didn’t do very well but by the third I got the hang of it and was doing a great job (in my amateur eyes).

It went on evenly without being blotchy or dripping, although I assume if you put too much on it will drip. Just do several thin coats and don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect after the first coat.

It dried pretty fast, not sure if its above or below average since it’s my first time using it, but it was better than I needed.

Works great. Its nice to have a product that performs well, I needed to prime small areas and this primer works great. Its nice to not have to mix up a batch and then clean up after. It covers nice and sands great.

Less work and mess.

Used on PU lips. Wet sanded 800, acetone wipe, sprayed Adhesion Promoter then 2 coats of the primer. Wet sanded 800, wiped clean then painted 3 coats with duplicolor Trim bumper. Primer looks black when spraying but turns slate gray.

Worked well.

While putting together a special gift for my great granddaughters 13th birthday, I realized that the final product would be far superior with a coat of Kilz. You see, nothing is to good for any of my kids.

When the project was complete, the difference the Kilz made was like night & day. I was really glad I elected to take that all important extra step. Her birthday is in a couple of weeks, but I’m sure she will be thrilled.

I received the dreaded text with sample pictures. Oak cabinets that I had flipped to white a couple of months earlier had stains bleeding through, my heart sank. I was greatly concerned that whatever I touched them up with would show up maybe worst than the stains themselves, but I had to try.

I grab a fresh can of Kilz Original Interior Primer, covered the counters, taped up the cabinet hardware and carefully sprayed the Kilz over all the bleed through areas. I was amazed! Not only did the Kilz dry very quickly, it looked so good I was tempted to not even top coat it with the finish paint concerned that maybe the Kilz would flash through the finish coat.

I did top coat it, and the Kilz did not flash through it. What a great product, and what a great cabinet save!.

I picked this product up because I couldn’t get a dewaxed shellac sealer. I paint furniture using acrylic paint and found that no sealer/primer caused the paint to absorb unevenly and splotch in places.

i was also painting knotty pine boards and found tannin bleed through the light colores paint I used. The alkyd oil nicely seals the pine from bleed and I like the silken finish of this oil paint once sanded.

I use a 320 grit garnet paper and with the spray version of this paint, the sound goes from scratchy to velvety in a few short strokes. The acrylic paint l use lays evenly on this primer. I only sand irregularities on the first coat or two, but once I sand the third coat, the acrylic finish is smoother than when I don’t use it.

I plan to use it as a base coat under most of my. projects going forward.

I needed to cover nicotine smell and hazards infused by previous tenants’ smoking. It sure seems to cover the hazards, as well as hides concentrated wall colors nicely. But the smell is overpowering!! It is advisable to prime a dwelling while empty.

The smell is similar to the old oil-based paints (lacquer?). Paint thinner should be by your side at all times, as well, to wipe any drops quickly, to wash any smudge off your body, and keep your brushes from drying up.

The primer dries up to a nice off-white matte finish. On colored surfaces, a bit of color is showing through after one layer of primer. It definitely needs a latex paint over. Nicely prepares the surface, though!.

The product was promised within 2 days. Delivery took 5 days which stalled my project by 7 days (had to wait for the next weekend to work on my project). IMPORTANT! The description of the product does not say “DOES NOT WORK ON DECKS”! On the can of primer paint it says the equivalent of does not work on decks or any other horizontal boards that are subject to a lot of rain or high humidity.

I would not have bought this primer paint if I had known that this primer does not work on deck boards. I did not return the product and I did use it on my deck boards just as an experiment (since I had already treated all my deck boards with a copper naphthenate wood preservative).

I have a professional air quality monitor because I am very sensitive to all kinds of things. I went to a hotel while my spouse painted a floor in our house. The VOCs and formaldehyde were in the danger zone at the hotel, where I had to spend most of the time venting the room with the window open just to get the air in the marginal range.

When I got home after the paint dried, the air quality in the room was fresh! I will never buy toxic paint again.

It goes on thick and has beautiful coverage. One coat and all the ugly kermit the frog green is gone (what was the previous owner thinking, who paints their living room kermit the frog green?) LOVE this primer.

This was used on a 17 year old Sabre. Stern, toe rails, decorative strips and helm deck. It made an unbelievable transformation in the appearance and texture of the wood.

I have severe fragrance/perfume allergies. It is impossible to remove the recently popular long-lasting, oil-based fragrances from unsealed wood, such as shelving and furniture, and almost impossible to remove them from painted walls/wood, no matter how many times you use the standard “scrub with vinegar and baking soda”, or scrub with strong degreaser, or any other standard remediation technique.

A box of strongly scented dryer sheets sitting on a storage closet shelf for a few days renders that closet permanently unusable for anyone with scent allergies. Essential oils (the worst stuff for anyone with fragrance allergies) or air fresheners like Febreeze or Airwick used inside a home will soak into the paint on the walls, and render the entire house or apartment uninhabitable.

This Zinsser BIN shellac, however, actually DOES SEAL IN ODOURS, as advertised, unlike other paints and shellacs I’ve tried. It is particularly great for unfinished wood, which can’t be cleaned with TSP.

(Note that TSP at higher concentrations and with a LOT of scrubbing can sometimes get those smelly polyaromatic hydrocarbons that are emitted by air fresheners and essential oil diffusers out of painted walls/wood, but mostly TSP works by literally removing a thin surface layer of contaminated paint.

) If you have allergies to fragrances and have to move into a house or apartment where the previous occupants liked to use GAIN or Febreeze or essential oils, or anything else highly fragranced, Zinsser BIN will save the day.

And judging by the other reviews, it also seals in mold and mildew (after first throughly cleaning and drying the area first, of course), so if you have mold or mildew allergies, this would be great stuff to use on any walls or wood that gets damp.

From all of us with allergy disabilities, thank you Zinsser for making an odour-sealing shellac that actually works!.

This primer is amazing. I use it to prime ripped drywall or dirty spots. It conceals pencil or pen drawings easily and dries really fast. It is shellac based, the same stuff women use for their nails.

It’s tough and dries to something equivalent to a dried super glue crust. Yes, it’s pricey for the amount but the substance is very watery so it lasts quite a bit. Just use it to work on the most problematic areas, this is not your average primer that you apply on everything.

High performance primer that blocks sap streaks and knot bleed through in pine. Its off white colour and runny, alcohol based consistency appears to soak in on first coat. Dries unusually fast and hard like sanding sealer.

Only downside is its strong odour, use only in well ventilated spaces.

A few things to note about this primer firstly. It does smell pretty bad and can be overwhelming in an enclosed space. Ventilation is your friend. I found the smell to be like latex paint meets urine.

But I spend some time around industrial paints so it wasn’t overly bothersome to me in comparison. Mix, mix, mix! It’s important to make sure this product is well mixed before you use it in order to insure the best results.

It’s thick, not ridiculously so, but thicker than the average latex interior paint. Be prepared to have to put a little more elbow grease into the application. Now for the good. This stuff worked great on both shiny new drywall and previously painted stuff.

I found using more thinner coats as opposed to less thicker coats worked better. Paint applies smoothly and evenly over this primer. Even the cheaper stuff. For the price it’s a good choice. It’s middle of the road price wise compared to other primers, but worked better than some more expensive products I’ve tried.

I plan to use this for several more painting projects.

I had very light greying of the drywall caused by mildew/mold. After lightly dry wiping the work area, I applied the BE123 and it covered the areas with no problem. I waited a few hours and reapplied a 2nd coat of the primer.

Smell of paint was no problem, I did have a mask on because I was wiping down the moldy drywall earlier, but still, the smell was acceptable. Worked well for my situation, which was covering up mildew/mold caused by improper venting.

Other situations will be different. cheers **** oh ya, I was so impressed with the product, I did the whole room with it; just being prudent.

I used to use Sherwin Williams primers for all my painting prophets until I tried this primer and found it more superior. I love this primer. Use it on vinyl, plastics, metals and wood as base coat before applying topcoat paint.

It grpes on the surface well which allows the topcoat paint to adhere better later on. Without it, I risk encountering paint bubble or peel off when I use painter’s tape to paint sharp edges. Also, it’s great to prevent whatever existing old paint from bleeding through and save time from needing to apply extra coating of paint to cover any paint flashing.

It pays to take the time to apply this primer before any topcoat paint. Best of all, it’s quite affordable when it’s in sale.

I love original oil-based Kilz. I feel like the strong smell drives off evil spirits as well as grease stains. When I purchased my 1970s style fixer upper 2 years ago, I coated every brown wood panled wall.

I used 30 gallons of Oil based Kilz primer, and I have never painted over that primer. Because I love oil based kilz so much. But your kilz 3 primer has the same coverage I expect from oil based kilz, and Since I no longer need to chase the bad juju stink of previous owners from my walls, the low odor of this formula has made me fall in love with your new, water-based hotness.

Thank you for always hiding bloodstains, dog stink and grease spots, Kilz! I love your products. Maybe one day I’ll advance to an actual paint color instead of just white primer on my walls. You betcha it will be Kilz when I do!.

I bought this less than two weeks ago to do Up this Old Fashioned Farm House Basement and Steps; it was Musty and Smelled of Very Old Farm Workings. So I put three coats of Primer on the Walls and two coats of the Oil Based on the Floors and Steps on Old but Saturday Stairs; what a treat for my Parents, whom live with me.

The House is only 1000sqft but the Charm and Cleanliness this Primer and Paint has brought is Breathtaking; I did white on the Walls and a light navy blue on the Floors in the room where my Father has his tinkerings and a pale butter yellow on the main walls of the basement; which makes my mother smile, with an old fashioned different color diamond pattern on the Floors with white trim; also the cold Pantry is ALL white from Floor to Ceiling as well as the shelves; now my canned goods are on Display!!! All of this done using Kilz Primer and Kilz Paint and Kilz Oil Paint.

HANDS-DOWN, ‘KILZ’ -(Multi Purpose Primer)- has been our choice for YEARS!! For as long as I can EVER remember, there has been at least 2 different types of ‘KILZ’ products in our home, at ALL TIMES! -(I’m now 63 yrs.

young!)- & when I was in my late elementary yrs, we decided to renovate & restore an old farm house & a barn on property. My mother is quite the ‘dynamo’ & ‘Kilz’ products were the first things she purchased for it all! Every single ‘KILZ’ product has always given us superior results, no matter what we used it for or put it on! Wether it using the Original Primer or the Multipurpose, depending on the project needs or location-(interior or heavy duty exterior, at the time)-there were always excellent results & have never needed to repeat any steps when applied, on anything, anywhere! A few years after that experience, we purchased a large property and built a new house & barn.

Shall I say again what were the first few items we purchased?? Right! ‘KILZ’ products and we were armed’ with confidence and ready for anything! Many years later, as I return each time back to that home & property, I always think how beautiful & sturdy it still is! I’ve used plenty of primers in my homes over the past 40 years. I’ve started with the inexpensive primers as I thought primer is primer. Boy was I ignorant. Sometime in the 1990s I was trying to “cover up” my infant child’s fancy new artwork in our rented home.

I certainly didn’t want to forfeit my deposit so I planned to paint the walls to hide the “art”. The primer I started using didn’t cover much at all. The black markings were still vividly visible through several coats of the cheaper primer.

I believe an employee at the local hardware store told me about Kilz. As I felt I had nothing left to lose a can went home with me and soon I applied another primer coating. The Kilz did exactly as the clerk said.

It “killed” the markings completely after 2 coats. Nothing was visible! That was an awesome product and I have been sold on Kilz ever since. For the past 12 years my home is a 120 year old farm house that I’ve been working on seemingly continually and we’ve used Kilz or Kilz 2 almost exclusively.

The only time we will deviate from our “go to” primer is when it’s not available. Then we only get enough to do the job and that’s it. I’ve used Kilz on fresh drywall and over top of existing paint with stellar results even with lower cost paints.

I can not say enough good about Kilz. Thank you for such a good product. Success breeds success. Exceeding expected results instills confidence and creates repeat customers as well as customers willing to try new products.

We needed this for our garage as our former tenants broke their lease, rolled cheap cigarettes and smoked heavily inside the garage causing a strong odor and we agreed to use this just to see if we could reduce the unpleasant odor.

It works, perfect with multiple layers. The odor has been eliminated by 80-85%. We paint almost every surface to reduce strong odors and block stains. Good thing it dries to a brilliant white and is a sealer in one.

I am very impressed with this painting. I also used it for another room that had several pet urine stains and the entire house reeked of wet dog. After one coat of this paint, the pet smell was barely noticeable.

I think one coat would be fine, but I’ll apply two just in case. I highly recommend this product. It works great and exceeds all of my expectations, giving my home an incredible restoration so I can breathe a clean environment free of unpleasant odors….

I just tried this out on a canoe paddle project. It was the first time I have used this wood sealer. Many wood sealers state that they are for indoor use. Obviously, needed one designed for both. I got excellent results with polyurethane finish coat.

Used this on some marine plywood, after staining, and before varnish. Two coats on the surface, three on the plywood edges. Solid wood trim pieces got two coats. You don’t have to sand between coats, and it dries within a couple hours (unless the temps are below 60 degrees, then it took longer).

After the last coat of sealer, you wait 24 hrs, give the parts a light sanding, and then you’re ready for varnish. First coat of varnish looks like the 4th or 5th. So, generally liked the stuff, except for the smell.

This is one smelly product! I use an organic vapor mask, and after a few days of working, the smell permeated through the mask. Had to get more filters! I’d give the product 5 stars if it didn’t smell so bad! But, overall it saved time (less coats of varnish), and money (cheaper than varnish).

My post from sailboat owners. com forum: I recently used Total Boat Wood Sealer Varnish Primer on solid teak that had been sanded down to bare wood. Applied 3 coats using an HVLP gun with 1. 4 tip, un-thinned.

Laid down beautifully with no sanding, less than an hour between coats. Dried with a really hard finish.

This primer is amazing. I used it to cover some IKEA furniture before painting and a single coat of this primer followed by paint turned out beautifully. Do you agree there is fumes that are given off from the primer so be in a ventilated area.

But drives very quickly and then the smell dissipates.

My favorite primer in a spray can? Fantastic! This stuff kills stains and stink so well. Love love love

I use a lot of this successfully for a quick primer on most surfaces for use indoors and outside. The spray tip always gets paint on the finger, bad. Also, when the can is getting near empty, the spray is too wet (not aerosoled fine enough).

As an owner of an eighty plus year old house, I had a lot of work cut out for me. This paint is perfect for covering magic marker that my “artistic” kids covered the bottom half of their wall with. It sticks to any surface I’ve tried it on, even oil based paint, which most of this old house’s walls are covered with–I LOVE THIS PAINT.

It makes old walls look new again. I highly recommend this product.

I loved this primer until I purchased some more to finish up a job. The new gallon of multi-surface primer seemed watered down. I didn’t need to add water to it so it would work in my paint sprayer like before.

Seems like the current behr ceiling paint is not the same formula either.

I recently did a lot of plastering repair work on our living room and dining room. I used this primer and could not be happier! It covered so easily and nice. I have always used BEHR paint. I was just amazed with this primer.

I have always used another sealer but after trying Behr, I can honestly say it is the only one I will ever use any more!! Can not wait to put my new Behr color on now!!!.

Benny Moore’s Fresh Start primer is the gold standard or primer paint. Ask any professional.

We had our older large deck and big privacy fence prepped and painted in early May 2022. We got lucky and it was optimum painting weather the entire time. The team that did the work was phenomenal. They washed, power washed, replaced a few boards, and sanded before painting.

We picked the Arborcoat in seagull Gray on the deck, and it looks spectacular. 4 Weeks later, the cleanability of the paint is not great. I have to use the pressure wash setting on the hose to get dirt and mud out.

Dried flower petals and their colors almost need to be scrubbed out. I’m pretty sure the rust marks from and old half barrel flower pot are permanent, even though the drips were seen after the first rain and the barrel was moved.

It’s really disappointing after spending so much money on paint to have it be so high maintenance after only a month, makes me worry that it will start peeling or chipping within a year. Again, the color itself is beautiful.

This Paint is probably better suited for a covered patio with no flowers.

I am a mother of a 1. 5 year old and was primarily concerned about paint odor and toxicity, and wanted to invest in a high quality paint that would make my job easy since painting with a toddler is not for the faint hearted.

Let me just note that I have painted with 2 other zero VOC paints in the past: Mythic and Colorhouse. Mythic to my knowledge is no longer available to the general consumer, so I won’t waste time on Mythic, but Colorhouse paints like a DREAM compared to BM’s Natura line.

Natura was exceedingly drippy, had poor coverage, and was very unforgiving of my starts and stops that inevitably happen when caring for a toddler. I had to paint extra coats to even out mistakes, and take extra time when applying to avoid drips or uneven painted areas.

This paint is not for the beginner painter. If all you care about is no VOC and no odor, you can learn to use it (use a high quality roller, use a spotlight, go slow, double check your work frequently), but if you also value an easy to work with paint, go with another paint!! My paint job took twice as long due in part to this terrible paint, but you can work with it if you are in the unfortunate group like me who bought the paint and had to stick with it.

When I switched back to Colorhouse paint at the end of my project, it felt like magic since it was so much easier to work with! Colorhouse is a brand that has staked its reputation on producing a non-toxic paint that is also high quality, and at about the same price point I would say throw Natura in the trash and go with Colorhouse if you have the option.

Unfortunately for me, I have to have Colorhouse shipped as it is not locally available, but looking ahead that is what I will be doing for all my future paint projects. Benjamin Moore, if you are reading this, the only thing that will make me rescind my review is if you send someone to finish painting my house and send my family on a tropical vacation since I lost my summer due to this terrible product.

I purchased this in 5g container to 1) cover nicotine and tar on a heavily smoked in home. On beginning project realized wallpaper had to come down due to damage, unfortunately, 40 year old wallpaper does not remove from bare drywall easily and paper was covering a lot of damage, so also used it to prime the drywall, then skim coats of mud/joint compound (mud would not have reacted well with any wall paper glue that was remaining on the walls).

Drop ceilings are receiving a coat of primer to cover the damage/stains for at least short term while we decide what to do about the ceilings. This works well on plaster walls, drywall, wallpaper, paneling (I put joint compound over paneling first to hide the “grooves” and make a smooth surface), metal drop ceiling tracks and the foam/fiberboard drop ceilings.

Cons: Pouring oil based primer from a small spout on a 5 gallon container was very cumbersome – would probably pay more and get gallons next time, cleanup (oil based so definitely not simple – but did not expect it to be) and the smell!.

Had a tenant renting my 50 year old, 5 bedroom house and they had 3 large dogs plus 2 cats that they apparently kept indoors and it appeared that they never let their pets out to relieve themselves. nor did they ever clean up the mess the pets made.

I tried everything from vinegar, baking soda, industrial cleaners and more but nothing worked to get rid of the awful pet odors. I almost gave up until I came across articles on the internet regarding the success people were having using Kilz original oil based primer to basically encapsulate the problem.

People, IT WORKS! I used a 3/8″ nap paint roller and basically paired the wood sub floor. It went on smooth & fast and dry time was less than 45 minutes. I only applied one generous coat and when I came back the next day, the place had the new house smell.

and still does 2 weeks later. What a fantastic and amazing product! I don’t know who to thank but am grateful I read some of the comments & reviews online otherwise I never would’ve known. Of course obvious thanks to Kilz for such an amazing product as well!.

We bought our first house which is a 1976 fixer upper and the interior had crazy colors in each room but worse than that was the mixed smell of pet urine and smoke. We cleaned what we could but it only helped so much.

We used kilz original and bc it was one of the few primers that said it helped with odor as well as color block. The product is oil based whi h makes it a bit more difficult to use and a bit strong of a smell but wow! It sealed everything and now it smells like a new house and looks like one too! We painted one room without kilz and we regretted it when we could start to smell the smoke through it.

Another time I went to buy this product the store was out of stock and I got a different brand and it was so much worse in quality and leveling. I returned it and drove to a further store to buy kilz.
