20 Best Wood Drill Bits (2022 Updated)

I like the finish on the drill bits. They are sharp and clean of milling marks. Great bits for wood. I’m so tired of the bits that are not sharp with clumps of metal welded to the edges (poor manufacturing/cost of manufacturing).

The box/carrier is a bit sad. Opening up into a space stealing mess. The front row of bits are a little hard to see (small print for my old eyes), while the two following rows are just plain hidden. Pick one out and then read it.

The drills are the final answer if I like them. And I do. They are worth all the problems of the packaging because they do the job. I like them.

I was looking for a quality 29 piece brad point set and found this very reasonably priced set. Fisch quality is apparent as you look at the bits. I have always been happy with Fisch bits.

I haven’t used many of the bits in the short time I’ve owned them but I can say they are very sharp and work great! Hopefully they will hold up. I am glad to finally buy a decent set instead of bargain bits.

If you’re a woodworker/maker and need to drill your holes at an exact spot, this is the drill bit set for you. Normal drill bits tend to wander, decreasing the accuracy of the hole. You could use a scratch awl to make an indent, but that requires a separate tool.

Use this for an all-in-one solution for accurate holes. I only have two issues with this bit set, and both issues are minor. First, the durability of the smaller bits could be better. One of the smaller bits snapped on me after one use, but I have not had this issue with the rest of the bits.

Second, the measurements in the case are embossed (raised) on the plastic and the same color as the surrounding plastic, making it difficult to read the measurements. Overall, I’m pretty happy with this bit set, especially for the price.

I thought I’d roll the dice given some reviews noted that some of the bits wobbled in the drill. I tried the smallest bit to see if I saw any wobble and it was very noticeable. I tried a bigger bit and didn’t see any wobble but it would not cut easily through plywood.

I really needed to push the bit through the wood which I typically don’t need to do with the other harbor freight brand titanium bits. Anyways I returned the bits. Thought it would be worth the shot, I bet other people might have gotten a good batch.

For years I would use metal drills for drilling wood. That usually results in holes being slightly off center, which can be a real pain when trying to install handles on drawers. These drills fix that – they’re made specifically for drilling accurate holes in wood.

The quality of these drills is not bad, but for the price they can’t be cabinet-maker quality. But they are certainly good enough for the average DIY person. I should have bought a set of these long ago.

If you work with wood around the house or shop, do yourself a favor and get a set of these. You’ll be very happy you did!.

Unlike similar tools from another supplier, these long wood dril bits are very sharp and hold their edge with use. The other make bent easily and then broke. So we are pleased with the Irwin bits and will probably purchase more sizes if we need them.

Absolutely shocking service from Toolden. The Auger Drill bit took 3 weeks to arrive. 3 whole weeks!!! I bought one from another supplier and received it next day before 10am. Could you collect it for a refund I will never use you again.

Cuts very clean in wood self feeding in wood as you don’t have to press in to the work. Very clen cut holes and wood chips removal was executed nicely. carbon steel heat treated and perfact round and balanced.

I use it as for professional work. One of the best makers of pricision tools. Well recommended. Quality 10 star.

Needed the extra length on this bit to bore 1. 5″ further beyond a 3. 5″ pilot hole (1/2″ diam), to make a full pass through a post (4×4) and cross member (1. 5″ thick). Pilot hole took 10 seconds using a standard pilot bit.

With this “speed feed” bit, applying full strength on the back of the drill, it took over 1. 5 minutes to go half as far, i. e. 20x slower, and required many manual pickings of chip matter out of the drill head.

I’ve had to pause the project until I can get a bit that works. The problem seems to be that the treated lumber clogs the bit channels, so the bit basically turns into a cylinder head. Researching the problem, I saw some references to “clean wood” in some of the online product specs, but found nothing prominent on the product packaging about it (poor packaging design).

The packaging should make this clear, in BIG PRINT. Maybe I should have done more research or read the fine print, but I didn’t expect this to be complicated, and unfortunately this experience soured me on the brand.

I bought this 6pc set but mine came in a convenient canvas pouch. I completely disagree with the other reviews of these bits. Ive had mine for almost 2 years and have NEVER had the cutting tips clog up.

And I have to pay close attention if I’m not drilling all the way through a post because once these bits get a bite they are coming out the other side, and quickly. I’ve build several large decks and used these bits to drill holes in the preasure treated posts for large carriage bolts and haven’t had any problems whatsoever.

I need to say that I am using the M18 Hole Hawg drill and that thing is a beast!.

I purchased this bit set with the impression that it would fly through wood with ease. I tested them out on a simple pallet and they would drill fast but would not break through the other side unless I pushed as hard as I could.

I was hoping these would make drilling a lot easier but they ended up being more of a gadfly than anything. I gave it two stars because they do look cool just didn’t perform how I was expecting.

Really disappointed. Bought this as a replacement to an old bit, but after cutting two holes through 20mm softwood, it is already smoking and burning the wood! I’d have been better off using my old bit.

I was expecting better quality hence buying a more expensive DeWalt bit but perhaps should have bought an Erbauer one instead!.

I purchased this DeWalt drill bit to help me hang an oak mantle above my fire place. I ordered it online with easy and no hassle payment and it was ready to collect the next morning 2 hours before it was supposed to be.

Picked it up and used it as soon as I got home. Worked great in my battery drop and cut easy into the piece of oak. Excellent price and a great brand. I would recommend this to anyone because it’s great value for money.

This purchase to replace item lost from toolbox. Very impressed with rate of cut and sharpness of tool. Point is precisely centred so no “wobble” on cutter. This bit does not have a threaded driver on the point – I prefer this design as I think gives greater control and feel when drilling.

It’s first outing was to drill through a faced worktop – not the ideal tool but did an excellent clean cut.

Bought this set a while ago. Always good to have a few installer bits. Just tried using the half inch bit to bore across an 8 inch pole between steel uprights. The tips look like metal drills, not wood drills, but they are too soft to drill steel.

I got in 6 or 7 inches and the drill stuck, as they sometimes do. I hit reverse, and the reduced shank immediately UNSCREWED from the drill! I have had many reduced shank drills, but NEVER a reduced shank drill that is not one piece.

I will have to come up with a set screw or tack these with my welder (more likely). BTW the shank is even softer than the drill; my chuck tore it up good, so I had to clean it up on the grinder. The vise grips I used to free the actual drill also tore that up a bit (soft!), so I cleaned that up on the grinder.

These are essential for drilling through headers and walls, for construction work. They’re perfect when running Romex or small conduit. The bits themselves are marked as wood bits, but the tips appear to be cut as general purpose bits, without the flutes, normally found on true wood bits.

For drilling in wood, these are adequate, but would probably work better with a true wood tip. They will also work on composites, like Bakelite and plastic J-boxes. I would not recommend these for metal.

With the long heavy shanks, they will tend to vibrate, so steadying the shank with a gloved hand is recommended.

While the bit certainly did the job, I did find some inadequacies. First, I wish I could have purchased the 1/2 inch bit by itself. I really didn’t need all three sizes. Luckily, Harbor Freights prices are so good, it didn’t really hurt my pocketbook too much.

Second, and what could be more problematic, the end of the bit that slides into the chuck has no flat surfaces. It is totally round. With continued use, I would imagine that this could cause slippage.

I purchased the bits for a specific job, and it worked fine for that. I’ll see what happens in the long haul.

Had to drill holes in the bottom of a large barrel, cutting through an inch of wood. This drill bit worked where others failed.

Purchased to drill holes for door handle latch in hardwood doors. Did not perform as well as expected with slow cutting

Fits well in the chuck, and chews through concrete; however, the bit will periodically slip when applied to solid concrete, which causes the chuck to shear off part of it. My 3/8″ shank became closer to a 1/4″ when all was said and done, even with religious re-tightenings.

I’m sure the bit would have lasted me a long time if I had used it on easier surfaces, such as brick or cinder block, or hadn’t needed to drill so deeply. All in all, good bit, but a standard electric drill probably isn’t the right tool for heavy duty masonry drilling.

I bought this drill bit to drill a hole in a concrete cinder block. I tried to drill through the block for about 10-15 mins with no luck!! It only went through the block maybe 1/4 of an inch. Very disappointed.

it was not a cheap bit.

The product works fine. The best part of this is the amazingly complete inventory of drill bits I find at the Beverly Aubuchon – quite impressive for a hometown hardware store.

I removed 3 large trees. Stump grinding was difficult because of location. I drilled several holes in each stump and killed them with chemicals. A year later I found the tree stumps, though dead, didn’t deteriorate much.

I used these wood augers to drill more holes for expedited rot. The cutting area of the auger (the shiny horizontal part in the photo) was just right, not too thick (doesn’t cut well), not too thin (chips easily).

Self feeding worked well. So far I drilled about 100 holes with 1″ auger. No dulling noticed yet.

I have a lot of different drill bit sets. A 125 PC HSS, self centering, countersink, Skil bit set and a few others. Problem is, several of them dumped out and I took the liberty of measuring them with my NEW igaging calibrated caliper.

Others had some variance in diameter. These were SPOT-ON. For wood bits, I wasn’t sure what to expect from them. If you need to go digging through some wood. These will work. As always I have a suggestion.

If you have access to the opposite side of the board. Drill until the threads start to poke through, flip it over and finish. There will be no tear-out and a clean bore. Including a picture of my measurements.

These worked slick for my electrical wiring project. I had spade bits the last time and that was tedious. These are fast. My 1-inch drill bit threads wore off after 2 holes, which had to be a defect since I’ve had no problems with the others.

Great set for the DIYer.

The shank is small and light duty. Not at all capable of holding up to contractors duties. Wont use. Cant recommend

Brand new. Was drilling holes for electrical runs – normal 2x framing. Was fast, clean, and no issues – until it bent on the 8th hole from catching a little. I thought this was the best bit I had ever purchased originally – Needs Better heat treatment or material to withstand normal use.

Positively surprised by the boring efficiency of these bits. I found all claims listed to be through. I had a set of spade bits from another manufacturer without the self driving tip. They forced me to apply a deal of pressure and constantly stop to remove sawdust.

These bits are great. Very well sharpened, pretty straight, absolutely selfdriving (just hold the drill), clean cuts (indeed less blowout than other spades). I found them a little too aggressive for my average drill.

A small drill might be challenged with these bit. Overall money well spent!.

Purchases yesterday. Used 1 1/4 bit on Canarywood. First used my DeWalt Cordless 18V drill and the bit locked up in the wood. Then I tried my Craftsman Electric Drill and same result. Then I tried the Spade Bit on Pine and it still locked up.

Ended up using another Spade Bit to drill the 26 holes.

I only used one bit so far, it worked very cleanly in pine. Not sure about cutting hardwood but I can’t see that being an issue considering how sturdy the bits are. I’m definitely not a professional woodworker but it worked extremely well for what I needed it for.

I had a chance to review this product at the perfect time. I am refinishing a reclaimed beam for a mantle on my fireplace and needed to drill a few holes so I can secure it to the wall. The wood beam had many nails and the bit worked well.

It stayed sharp and the holes were clean.

I tested this auger bit by drilling 12 holes through some old railway ties that were embedded with gravel, chunks of metal and other stuff. The auger drilled through the railway ties hitting gravel and metal pieces and stayed sharp throughout the whole project.

Dewalt is a company that means quality! I have tried out various other tools and now I only buy Dewalt. They are undoubtedly the best quality products while still maintaining a fairly affordable price! Specifically, these cobalt tipped drill bits are sharp, strong and cut quickly through any wood and many medals that I have used them on! In fact, to date, Ive never broken one.

The only reason I buy them online is because I find myself losing them.

You must have this size of drill bit to properly install a Floyd rose Stud, The one recommended by Floyd rose is too big, 25/64 Is the proper size, They ship fast too.

I used the trimmer for the first time today and it worked for about 10 minutes and died. Pretty sure the motor is burnt up. I have a nicad 18v (10 yrs old) and a 20v (6yrs old) still going strong. The battery still works.

I bought this to drill 300mm long holes in oak sleepers – using an erbauer heavy(ish) duty cordless drill. So far Ive done about 100 holes and it goes through very well. Im going to get a 25mm one too as I have an erbauer one which cost about 8 but it useless- buy cheap, buy twice.

The Irwin drills seem to be great.

The drill bit arrived in good packaging and didn’t appear to be damaged. I haven’t tested the bit to see how straight it is, but it cuts through hardwood easily. When I measured the diameter of the bit it came to 7.

94mm which made it just to small for what I needed; but most drill bits are probably slightly small than they are supposed to be.

C. 45,000 holes to drill on the current job. Wondering how many of these bits it will take. So far about 4,000 holes in and one bit has snapped and one has worn out. Pretty good performance for the value, would be a bargain for a one off job or diy’er.

Accuracy and speed of drilling when fresh is very good.

Very sharp, I had bought two because of the job I’m doing, thinking I would blunt it, but not had to open the second one yet. Perfect for pilot holes in Cedar timber framework, which is very dense, and also quite wet still after two weeks drying.

A longer one would be useful.
