I’m a certified designer who recently refinished approx 2000 sq’ of heritage original chestnut plank floors. Upper floor: I used this product in it’s oil based version both on bare floors and tinted stained floors.

Lower floor: I used this exact water-based product over chestnut (bare) as well as parquet oak floors. It’s now a year later for both and here’s my opinion: OIL: To use was obviously tricker and more tedious.

It definitely tends to bubble more than water (I use a cotton roller then a pad applicator over top to smooth and spread evenly while wet). Oil goes on thicker, requiring fewer coats. Drying time is about a day vs water which took a few hours.

Odor was heavy. Clean up was a chore. The clear varnish results in a honey coloured tint, it does not go down clear, so beware of the golden-orange colour change. Durability: after a year of heavy traffic and cleaning the oil shows very minimal if any, signs of wear (scratch or dulling).

Very pleased with the durability. WATER: Goes on crystal clear, no tint like the oil. Application was easier than oil, it has a thinner & more watery consistency than oil, no bubbling. Odor was much lighter than the oil version of this product.

Drying time was impressive. I was walking on the floor the same day whereas oil I always sit for at least 24-48 hours. Clean-up was also impressive, easier than latex paint. The downside to this product is that it does not wear like the oil version.

It wears much more quickly. Not to say it isn’t durable, it’s still holding it’s semi-gloss sheen quite well, but showing signs of scratching quite quickly. It’s likely that I’ll simply add another coat or 2 over the 3-4 original coats within 2-3 years from now.

The oil floors upstairs show no sign of requiring a maintenance coat. Overall I’d choose the water version as my preferable choice. I’m not intimidated by work or maintenance with the water version as it’s so easy to apply and dries so quickly.

For true wood lovers wanting to showcase grain or the wood surface underneath, the genuine clear finish does a much better job than the “clear” honey tinted oil version at bringing out the grain. I’m about to varnish a spelt-maple large dining table.

I will choose the water based product although I know the table will take some abuse (I’ll eventually add a glass protective topper). In an area where water could be more of a contender however, like a kitchen or foyer, I would happily go with the oil based version of this product again.

One tip: when varnishing: use a cotton roller to quickly spread 1-3 lines on the floor. Use a varnish synthetic wide varnish pad immediately over top to smooth out, repeat. Always light-sand before final coat.

I used this method for both oil & water & it was a quick way to eliminate bubbles (oil) and lines from typical brush or pad lines.

This water based polyurethane does not have fumes and is very easy to apply. I sanded and waited more than the suggested time between coats. I was happy with the result; however, there are several scratches on the surface that were made just by placing objects on it (no pressure).

Unfortunately, I will need to sand everything again and I will probably apply an oil based polyurethane next time.

This was a good product but unfortunately due to user error I was unable to properly use it. I originally planned to use it to make glittered ornaments in replacement to poly acrylic but this is a satin finish.

At first the ornaments didn’t look as bright but after a couple of days of drying it worked out. Will do in a pinch but it’s better if you buy the glossy finish.

IšverstiShow in original languageI just recently purchased my first home and the floors had seen better days. after doing some research I decided I was going to sand the floors down and use this product.

Let me just say this is the FURTHEST thing from an easier route! I read the directions 100 times, watched multiple videos, and followed every bit to the T. This stuff is absolutely horrible to work with! It’s splotchy and streaks soooo badly.

I wonder if my floors look worse now than before and if I could afford it and didn’t wast an entire weekend in my extremely busy schedule I might start all over! This stuff is the furthest thing from forgiving… you can see every single stroke, if it overlapped by even half an inch.

it’s just bad!! And to top it all off I am now having to add a clear coat on top because this stuff is far from being sealed! I would highly recommend doing some research and finding a better solution if you’re starting from freshly sanded floors.

It may work just fine for existing floors, but don’t use this if you start fresh!.

IšverstiShow in original languageI have used this on many floors on rehan projects and in my own homes. The look and durability are both superb. I have never had any success applying this stuff with any of the usual pole applicators.

I actually get on my hands and knees and put it on with a 4″ foam brush. This takes time, but for me the quality of the finished product makes it worth the trouble. I have also not had much luck getting even color in only one coat.

Again, I don’t care. It’s a very tough and good-looking product and since discovering it I never use anything else.

I purposely left a bit of streaking when putting on the coats, so it wouldn’t look like a black paint job. There’s nuance to the finish. By the way, since it’s mentioned on the can, I put this right over an existing finish.

I sanded the existing floor by hand just to rough it up a bit. Then I swept and damp-mopped and let it dry. Then I applied the Minwax Complete. There are no scratches, no peeling, and it seems tough.

I was concerned because I was putting this over an existing finish, but true to the can, it worked just fine.

After doing some research, this sounded like a good idea to try. Minwax has been around forever so I trust their name. I was not disappointed. We redid the floor in the master bedroom and it turned out better than we expected.

I, quite honestly thought it would not work, but I was very impressed with how my floor became new again. We were so happy with the results, that we did the cabinet in the master bathroom as well so it matched the bedroom floor.

IšverstiShow in original languageApplied this with an applicator for floors, tried using a deck pad in the beginning but failed miserably. Floor applicator pad was much more forgiving. For a novice I would recommend using this product with knee pads and avoid using a pole.

So much better control! Stained pretty dark, but I did three coats because deck pad screwed up my first attempt. Directions recommend two coats. Probably best to apply light coats to get the desired darkness.

This one dries fast and is tacky within minutes. Good for smaller jobs.

I used Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane on a beautiful piece of wood used as a coffee bar. I watched several videos on application before my attempt. After opening the can I stirred it out. There was a thick sludge at the bottom of the can about 3/4” deep.

After stirring the sludge into solution. I applied the first coat and after drying it was beautiful. I prepared for the second coat. When stirring I noticed there as not a sludge layer on the bottom of the can.

I Continued to stir to the same consistency as the previous day. After Sanding and wiping with a dust cloth I started applying the second coat. Unfortunately the second coat did not produce the same results.

It seemed to separate into clumps. I tried to smooth the coat but it continued to produce a rough texture. I finished the coat and let it dry. The poly never smoothed out. It looked terrible so I had to sand it off.

Now I don’t know what to do. Very disappointed.

I just finished the second 50+ year old chest of drawers for my great grandkids. Both were prepared the same way in same conditions. The first chest I used the old “clear gloss “ on brilliant white paint and result was a very attractive amber with a great shine.

The second I didn’t have enough of the old gloss so I bought a gallon of the New Warm Gloss and was told it was the same formula?? Nope!! I now have amber streaks, I put on second coat hoping it would even out, just made it worse.

I have used Minwax for 20 years and never had a problem, until they changed. Too Bad, looking for new supplier.

I’m kicking off a star just because this definitely took a higher level of experience to use than other top coats I have used. I had terrible yellowing. Likely my own fault due to not sanding in between coats.
