20 Best Wood For Birdhouses (2022 Updated)

I purchased these birdhouses for my daughter’s 8th birthday party. The theme was a garden party and the kids spent the first 30-40 minutes painting and decorating their houses. It was a huge hit and great party favor.

They were so excited to decorate the houses and then get to take them home. Although they are small, I definitely recommend them for craft projects with kids.

The kids love them. They are easy to paint and look like they can last a few years They probably could paint a dozen each.

These birdhouses are very, very small but perfect for the 7-9 year old class with which I worked. The houses were very pretty and even though small kept my young students busy painting for a while.

It arrived today and this birdhouse is just the cutest! The hole is pretty small so I am thinking a chickadee will use it since those are what nests in my other boxes. It could easily be used for indoor decor as well! Just a darling design and it’s well-made with a closing flap in the back so you can clean it out after the birds leave the nest.

I’m so pleased with it!.

I can’t evaluate this birdhouse, exactly because, although I have over 10 Glitzhome birdhouses, I plan to purchase this one. I agree with the first reviewer, that the houses are really cute and well made.

I love the tin roof and carved wood designs that hold the theme together on my porch. The large birdhouses are even more impressive. As time passes, due to their rustic nature, these birdhouses can be touched up if needed.

Mine are over a year old and have wintered over beautifully.

This birdhouse is perfect! The slightly rusted roof and bell are just the perfect touch for this beautifully distressed birdhouse. I love it ♥ It’s actually better in person than in the picture. If you love birdhouses, I would highly recommend adding this one to your collection.

The birdhouses arrived in a timely manner on the expected date. They were very carefully packed in small individual boxes placed in a large box – all shipping boxes were marked fragile. With all the small details on each birdhouse, none of them were damaged nor did any tiny parts detach.

The colors and details are exactly as pictured on Open-tips website. The house wrens love nesting in them. This is my third set of houses over a period of many years. The houses are sprayed first with a water repellent prior to placing outdoors.

Due to our severe winters, they are placed in my garage to overwinter till spring. Caring for them this way provides several years of enjoyment. Extremely satisfied with the ease of ordering, prompt shipping and follow up emails.

I have several of these birdhouses. none are really meant to be outside, in my opinion. But I have found the perfect use for them!!! I have a G-scale train (the large garden size). and these are the perfect size to use with it! The buildings that are sold for G-scale are very plain, flimsy and around $100 each! These are a bargain! So much character! I have a whole collection now to make a rustic village and fishing/camping ground for my train.

along with lots of pine trees. I don’t use my train outdoors, but if you put a sealer on these for that purpose, they might hold up better.

where question opt!? Decorative vrs outside element durability should be made clear! specific bird types item attracts, ease of annual clean out, multi bird entry should specify if separate compartments vrs.

I was pleased with the construction and design of the birdhouse. Really cute. I was a bit amused by the lengthy instruction for sticking the wooden spire into the opening. Didn’t need any instruction.

Also liked the colors and distressed appearance.

I used this craft for 6th graders. They enjoyed putting the houses together and it took about 15+ to put together and decorate. They turned out nice, I was just missing a few rods and hangers.

Our Adult Day Program Clients made these as an activity in the Spring and hung them around the building or brought them home. They loved putting them together and painting them and watching the birds that have inhabited them.

I am a activities director at a nursing home. We pre-assembled the birdhouses and the project consisted of painting them. The residents really enjoyed themselves with the activity and couldnt wait to show them off.

I love the look of this product but 2 things…one, if you don’t reach inside the holes, you’ll never know. The staples to hold those designs on the front stick out sharply inside the house & I can picture birds & baby birds getting badly injured.

Two, there are 2 holes in front but only one floor inside & one door to clean out in back. The second is insignificant.

The picture looks great, however 1st it’s not a bird bath, it has holes in the corners, it’s a feeder, which is what I needed so ok, 2nd the one I got is all rusty metal like it had been outside for a long time before I got it.

So rustic is not a good description, rusty is!!! Very disappointed with this product.

Perfect for our birds

my home has a rustic exterior, so this fit right in. We took three large sawed tree trunk logs, stacked them together and bolted the house on top. The house is exceptionally large, even larger than I expected, so it fit perfectly.

I glued a small dog and a small barrel of apples on the front porch to give it a finished personal touch. Perfect!.

I can’t wait to put this beautiful bird house in my back yard! I love the whimsical look and it was cheaper on Houzz compared to other sites. Quality-made product, too. Highly recommend!

I am so happy with this birdhouse! My firsr reaction to seeing it was’ Whoa! It is BIG!” Bigger and better than expected. I am actually using it inside as decor on the bottom of my fireplace. To big for any mantle but great to sit on bottom for spring decor.

These houses are pretty big and are really cute. The only wrong thing about them and it could be a big flaw, is the top. When I first looked at them, I said to myself, you can’t plant anything in these! First, the rain will wash out anything you plant in it, so I wouldn’t even try, second, and this is very important, any water that pools on the top will drain down into the house itself.

As I just learned from another birdhouse that I bought from LTD is that if the house is not made from wood and has no drainage on the bottom, is that the nest itself will pool with water and all the twigs and other materials the parents used will stay wet and get moldy.

That could be deadly to the birds! I am going to have my husband cut out the panel on the top in the front so water can’t pool on top. There is a nice big pull out section in the back to clean out the house.

Except for the top issue, these are really nice and you will love them!.

I bought 2 of the birdhouses, one for me and one for my sister. They are very well made and, did I mention, so cute. Seeing the birds won’t be around so late in the season, we’ll be putting them out in the spring and then decide what to put in the planter.

The houses don’t hang as pictured, they tend to drop forward. They are very cute and sit nicely on a table. I put drainage holes in the bottom of the planter. The planter doesn’t have very much root space so you have to select shallow root plants.

Very good quality bluebird birdhouse at a comparable price. Walmart has a few good birdhouses to choose from both online and at the stores. To make sure you get many years of use from the birdhouse make you apply a non-toxic weather finish to the outside.

And add a metal guard plate around the entrance hole to prevent predators from entering.

Nicely put together cedar house with front latch for easy cleaning. The only downside: a bit overpriced.

I purchased two different birdhouses for Valentines Day for my grandkids to paint for their mother. She absolutely loved how cute they turned out. The girls had so much excitement to paint and it kept them busy for the afternoon.

Then for their mother to continue to enjoy them as they hung was also perfect gift. These birdhouses are built very sturdy and will be great for the birds they feed. Their designs make it easy to paint with multiple colors and symbols.

I bought this unfinished birdhouse for my daughter and son-in-law who were just about to buy a house. Despite looking fragile, it is very strong. The structure is very well put together (no uneven edges) and the “accessories” like the fence, are well-glued.

I have not painted it yet – waiting until the house deal is finished – but I’m looking forward to it. The surface of the house is very smooth and seems as if it would be easy to paint. The kids were delighted with it!.

This is adorable. Nicely detailed with picket fence, window frames, front porch and steps. A little fiddly to paint because of all the detailing. Probably not functional as an actual bird house, but I doubt anyone’s buying it for that purpose.

I added artificial snow for a really cute Christmas center piece. If you like to do decorative painting projects for your home, buy this – really cute and reasonably priced.

I received this birdhouse and was in the box with no wrapping. I took out and the left side of roof came off. I found 1 tiny nail that had been on roof. Other nails were missing. Also the opening in the birdhouse is so small, I actually thought it would be bigger.

The birdhouse is a large size however. For the price of this I definitely would not recommend. It is very cheaply made and again whoever packed this, just put in box with absolutely no wrapping material.

I am so disappointed!.

We can’t wait to put it up. It is exactly as described. We had to purchase the piece that screws into the bottom so that it can stand on top of a pole. We have 5 birdhouses and some are needing replacements.

This looks like it will last a long time.

Another cute house – string to hang it from is cheap and won’t last, so I’ll keep eye on it before it weathers and breaks making the house fall and bust to pieces. I had hoped the opening for the birds would be plenty big that my little birds would feel comfortable using it, but not sure they will – because the wheelbarrow is in the front of the door – so I’ll just have to see if anyone decides to nest there.

Some pieces were off when I got it – but I glued them back and it is fine and very cute. I keep looking for bird houses that offer “Big” front doors so birds as big as doves can use it if they want. I don’t know why with all the bird houses I have with these small holes to get in – my little finches and other birds will not use them.

Only the blue birds will use houses made specifically for them – out on post in the yard will use those little holes. I have 2 birdhouses with 3″ x 3″ openings and they are the only 2 birdhouses that are used over the years.

One year it was a dove – this year it is finches. The other houses offered all have these small little openings and I guess they don’t like feeling like they don’t have a big enough door to get out if needed.

Can’t figure it out. But for collectors like me – these houses are great price and very cute!.

This was a Christmas gift for my husband; he had admired it when we were looking for a birdhouse for his daughter. We decided on something more simple and made of resin for her and her husband, so I ordered it for MY husband instead.

I have many birdhouses all around our frontporch and love them. However I always have to replace the cord they hang from because it dry rots and breaks eventially. So I will replace this new one with wire before I hang it to begin with.

I wish they used something more hardy instead of the cheap stuff they are using.

I liked the simplicity of these unobtrusive, functional birdboxes. We intended to make some, so priced the materials needed to make similar boxes to replace some of our weather warn ones. The result was that these were cheaper.

The natty method used to hinge and open the front was particularly clever I thought. These boxes are not going to last more than about 5yrs in our weather I reckon, but since they generally need changing after at most 5yrs anyway, it isn’t a problem.

I would definitely recommend purchasing these if you are after a simple, functional bird box. It’s worth mentioning too that the hole size is small, ideal for Blue-tits and wrens, (& bees!!). But it would need enlarging for Great-tits or sparrows.

(ps. if bees do move in, DON’T stick your nose in the hole to have a look!!!!).

Very cute bird boxes. Could of done with some extra care in cleaning out the wood shavings or sanded down the holes when done drilling. But all I all will do the trick. Great packaging

Decent price for multiple bird houses. Rather cheaply made but should do the trick. The first thing I did was to adjust the latches, tighten the loose screws on the mounting brackets and then coat them with Marine varnish in the hope that they would last longer.
