20 Best Wood For Kindling (2022 Updated)

I exclusively use packaged fire-logs throughout the winter almost every night in our fireplace. I stockpile cases of them whenever I find a good price, but that often means getting them out of season and storing them in our garage.

Not sure if they dry out or not, but it can be difficult getting them started & achieving that nice “roaring†result. No more. These little cylinders are perfect. I place 1 or 2 under the log, light them up (along with the corners of the log) and sit back to enjoy the warmth.

They work every, single time. My photo will show you my placement. The aluminum foil is only there to facilitate clean-up after several logs have turned to ash. This has been a terrific find. I no longer have to feed the fireplace scraps of paper, cardboard, etc to try and get the log going.

And they work just as well for our outdoor fire pit when using wood as well.

I discovered this style of fire starter recently when I found a small pack of Frontier Tumbleweed Natural FireStarters at a local store. I was so impressed with the effectiveness, I went big and bought a 400 count pack here of what is essentially the same form / design / make-up of fire starter made by Ukrwoodgroup / Zorestar.

Absolutely these work the same and are a better value. There is a slight difference however that makes me really wonder if the Zorestar utilizes refined / recycled cooking oil in their product. THEY SMELL LIKE A COLD VENT HOOD FILTER installed over a deep fryer.

The Frontier branded tumbleweeds had no smell at all. Do I care? Not really. But I also appreciate integrity in a product’s claims. I am not saying the specification are inaccurate. I just have my own doubt.

For example, the box clearly states “. made of natural wood and paraffin”. This is followed by “Does not contain petrochemicals”. Paraffin is defined as: a flammable, whitish, translucent, waxy solid consisting of a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons, obtained by distillation from petroleum or shale and used in candles, cosmetics, polishes, and sealing and waterproofing compounds.

Petrochemicals is defined as: a chemical obtained from petroleum and natural gas. Chemical is defined as: a compound or substance that has been purified or prepared. So. Paraffin is a petrochemical. Anyway, I still give these 4 stars, love the product, and love petrochemicals.

I don’t love misleading labels.

So here I am, probably $200 later, just now discovering these little gems. I was looking for an easier and more economical way to start my fireplace, and I can’t believe my luck! I usually combine natural logs with the other “lighter bag” logs.

As you know the lighter bag logs are expensive (I’m using the phrase “lighter bag” instead of mentioning the brand). I thought why not gamble with these fire starters since they were so cheap? I figured, if they work, they work, if they don’t, they don’t, I’m only out of ten bucks.

What a pleasant surprise! I really wish I had discovered these earlier, I would have saved a ton of money, but I’m so grateful and will continue to buy these forever. Thank you so much! I love that they are natural and don’t smell.

I used about seven to get my fire going. My wood wasn’t wet or anything, I had really large logs. I’m no expert at burning wood and I don’t really understand how to stack them properly. I put two fire starters beneath the wood, three or four in the middle and piled a log on top of that and then I placed a few on top and I lit them all at the same time.

I had to move the logs around to really get the fire going but now that it’s going I couldn’t be more pleased. You won’t be disappointed! These are AWESOME!.

Very well made, compact, and transportable. Im pushing 79, with chronic lower back challenges. But after a few sessions, this really gets the job done. Best result for me is sitting on a reinforced wooden crate with feet on ground.

For dense wood, its helpful to use an iron wedge on the top. Strongly recommend wearing safety glasses and gloves with ribs. Helps to maintain a better grip on the hammer. With patience, you can become a weekend woodsman/woman.

Provides good upper body and arms workout. The blade is safely placed, and isnt razor sharp. But dont take it for granted. Be realistic about the products limitations. Having watched a few YouTube tutorials gave me reasonable expectations.

I bought the smaller splitter a few years ago! I love it, it handles smaller pieces of wood. I saw the bigger splitter and purchased it. It handles larger pieces of wood!! I am female, 67 years old, had my shoulder injured in an auto wreck.

We heat our home with wood. This tool is invaluable!! I can easily split wood. I start with the large splitter, then use the smaller splitter to make kindling for my wood cook stove and for starting fires in the big stove! My son in law came to help me split wood.

These logs are great! Love the burn time and the heat they emit. Perfect when you want to build a quick fire and easy to use. The package comes with fatwood, plus I like to use a small all natural pod starter as well.

Once lit, they burn great and make a perfect fire. I enjoy the all natural aspect of these logs, the low ash and smoke free features. They are packaged nicely and easy to carry. Will buy again.

We had underestimated how much wood we would need for our ski place. In an attempt to shore up our supply, we bought several packs of the Green Mountain Firewood. We were so impressed with how easy it was to start, how much more heat it gave off than the kiln dried wood we had, and how neatly it burned.

way overpriced! actually started to send it back, but after a bad winter storm in the area wood was impossible to find, so I cancelled the return. Then wood was nearly impossible to burn! would stay lit for a minute or two and then fire would go out.

After about an hour and a ton of rekindling, finally got it going, but would ever buy again.

I purchased a “Kindling Cracker” because I am getting older and I found controlling the axe was getting tougher to do safely. With grandkids about, safety and control, especially with sharp tools, was of paramount importance to me.

This is the best ever. I have a hydraulic wood splitter for firewood, but had always used a camp hatchet or axe for kindling, generally not with great success. I just hated making kindling and often resorted to finding small sticks to use instead.

I burn wood in our farm shop daily during the cooler/cold months, so use a fair amount of the stuff to get fire started. This thing makes it easy!!! Just take a piece of split wood and you can make four to six smaller pieces out of that one stick of wood.

Really easy, safe and issue free. Works equally as well on green or dry wood. I usually use dry wood from the wood pile to make kindling and it is harder to split, but not with this little gem. One tap with hammer and it “seats” the wood, then one or two good whacks and it’s done.

I’ve had a wood stove for 25 years, and this fatwood is hands-down the best fire starter I have ever found. It lights immediately. It burns cleanly. In fact, my chimney sweep recommended it. It gets the fire started every time, which I cannot say for any other starter.

Kindling Wood Firestarter Sticks 300: $18. 75 at the time of review We’ve got an outdoor fire pit in our backyard and I’m always on the lookout for fire starting aids. It’s not that I can’t make a fire.

In fact, it’s fairly easy. But if I can skip out on chopping kindling, I usually will. Read on to find out why I like these kindling sticks, but probably won’t order them again at this price. The package for these fire starters is essentially just shrink wrapped plastic.

It’s just wood so it doesn’t need a lot of protection in transit. There is also a plastic fiber packaging band around the sticks, but you have to be careful when you open it and start pulling them out so as not to spill the sticks everywhere.

The kindling I received was bone dry. It lit up without any paper under it and I was able to get a fire going relatively quickly. That said, the sticks are fairly small, so unless you use paper or you have graduated sizes of wood pre-chopped and ready to burn, you might end up using more of these than you’d otherwise need to.

I found that about 7-10 sticks would like the fire in my fire pit if I used increasingly larger pieces of wood, which means that I still have to chop relatively kindling-sized sticks anyhow. Which brings me to my initial paragraph.

They don’t advertise it as fatwood, but it’s odd as kindling. What you get are pieces of regular dry wood sawn into small kindling size uniform pieces. I have found I need a lot compared to fatwood to get the fire started.

They did not mislead me, rather I didn’t read the kiln dried firewood as meaning it’s not fat wood since I had searched on kindling. So just a heads up if fatwood is what you want. I will use up but won’t order again as I prefer the fatwood.

I was surprised at just how many starters I received! I’ll be able to start bonfires at the beach for the next two seasons and then some. I like that these are not impregnated with any fuels or waxes, because what is a bonfire without s’mores.

And I don’t like roasting marshmallows over a fire that has used paraffin or any other wax to get it going, even if the fire has been burning for awhile. These sticks catch fire quickly, burn fast and clean and do the job of getting the firewood to burn.

I still start with a little wadded up paper to get things going, but it doesn’t take much to get these sticks going. If you’re looking for easy kindling, I recommend these. Worth the money, easy to store and does the job.

I have a large fireplace so the wood I burn are large logs to accommodate size of fireplace and I was having a difficult time getting wood to catch being so large, I found that putting a few small pieces of wood/kindling then set one of the fire starters on top of that then large logs on top so fire starter in middle of that.

Use a long candle lighter to reach in and light fire starter works like a charm. My firewood is hickory which takes longer to catch and these fire starters get the job done. I will keep these on hand as they make easy work of fire starting.

The duraflame fatwood logs are fantastic. You will only need one or two per fire. They are sometimes difficult to find in the winter so I buy them in the spring and store them in steel ammo boxes, also bought at Walmart, and store them in my shed.

My shed is rather humid but since the ammo boxes are sealed it hasn’t been an issue. Having these mean I don’t have to worry about gathering or keeping kindling.

Firestarter wood, which is great for starting fires in a firepit, or when out camping. We have been using these to get a fire started in our firepit, that also came from best buy. When we’ve gone camping we took a few with us to use as Firestarter in the woods.

Amazing kindling. Highly recommend Pure hardwood. No wax or chemicals like fatwood. This no bad smell, excess smoke or fire flare up. Super easy to start a fireplace. Please a nice helping of newspaper rolled into balls onto grate.

Put about 20 of these kindling sticks on top in all different angles building a pile. Heat flue with rolled newspaper for about 60 seconds. Light the newspaper under the kindling. Throw in some newspaper balls until the kindling catches fire (take about a minute).

Add some more kindling until you have a hot burning fire. Place 2 logs on the kindling. Logs catch right away. Super easy. No need for fire starter A must buy.

I Don’t understand The negative comments. These are not fire starters they are kindling sticks which you use to help with getting your fire going. I have been using the sticks in my woodstove every winter.

I build my logs on the bottom then stack four of the kindling sticks on top in a square then put a fire starter cube in the middle of the square for a top down fire, works every time. As I stated before these are not for starting a fire they are for helping to get a fire going that’s why they are kindling.

These are a great clean natural way to start a fire. These aren’t the poly wax fire starters. These are to be used as kindling to start a fire. They work awesome. I only need to use a few and I can get a good fire pit fire going quickly.

This is a fairly simple product to use for starting your fires. Especially if you don’t want to use any chemical firestarters. I wouldn’t say it was quick to ignite. I had to hold the flame to the wood for about 30 seconds or so before it caught and stayed lit.

That could be normal (I don’t know anything about seasoned wood so I have no idea if that’s on par). Once it was lit though it stayed lit and of course lit and of course, lit the charcoal around it. There’s no adverse smell, just clean wood burning.

I only have a little Webber grill so it was very easy to use in that. The wood I’d say burned at a normal rate, not too fast so I only had to use one piece. But if you’re lighting a large grill, I’d imagine you’d only need about 2 or 3.

The only thing I wish it had was a resealable bag. I cut a small slit at the top to slip one piece out at a time, but I am worried bugs may want to climb in and chill. So I’ll probably put it in another bag to avoid that.

This is sturdy and well-made but the part for the kindling on the bottom is too open. There arent any crossbars so even if the sticks are long enough, they get turned to the side in the wind and fall out.

I put a couple 1x2s across the bottom and it works great now.

With the product assembled and in place, neatly storing a cord of wood I come away satisfied in making the purchase. It wasn’t an easy ordeal as the parcel came damaged with parts missing. After enduring some delays with the manufacturer for the parts, things were peacefully resolved.

It took me a while to figure out the instructions for assembly but with the help of my wife we have a very useful rack to store our wood. In all, it was worth the wait as the product is very useful.

It is strong enough and looks great. The plastic covering is a poor quality. It has no fasterners to hold it in place and blows off very easily. It’s not ripped yet but I’m sure it won’t be long now.

Bought the bundle for 2 purposes. A scratching post for my cat ( I don’t mind cleaning up). 2nd purpose: to work on a lighted Xmas display for that time of year. Not allowed fireplace so decided to make a creative one.

Our daughter bought us this for Christmas. It broke at the knife the first day my husband used it. Our pieces were dry and with the ax break up nicely. Daughter worried our age was making the wood more dangerous and thought this would help.

It didn’t. Most fir pieces wouldn’t even fit until they were so small it was pointless. Those that fit were 15″ x 5″ and the blade broke almost immediately. We are hiding it from our daughter. We don’t want to hurt her feelings.

But really, who makes junk like this. Very disappointed Lehman’s, very disappointed.

The box looked small at first, but it works great, even on our larger split wood! Good quality and seems very safe to use too. Simple, old-fashioned. Love it!

I saw the videos on the Kindling Cracker and noticed they always used pretty much straight grained wood. After I mounted it on a stump I made a point to use the most gnarly pieces I had in the wood pile to test it.

It breezed through them in no time. Needless to say I was impressed. I used a 4# short handled sledge hammer for the task. The jag of kindling in the pic was completed in well under five minutes.

After a while it takes a bit more heat to get them started but they are PERFECT when you first get them. Makes starting fires child’s play. Strongly recommend.

Great fire starter! Lights every time! No chemicals. Just naturally burning wood. Does smoke quite a bit. But lasts.

I decided t try this fire starter because I was not pleased with what I had been using to start the wood stove. Well, I am happy I switched. Stump Chunks do the job ! They are easy to use, reasonably priced, and easy to store.

I will definitely stick with this product and look forward to using them to start the charcoal grill.

I use an old fashioned charcoal grill as well as an hibachi. Getting the charcoal to light was always a hassle and I don’t like petroleum fire starters. Stump chunks is the answer for a clean fast starting fire and clean tasking food.

This product is SUPER. It is a great starter for my Jotel stove. I have tried Fat sticks and the chunks do the job every time. I also like the fact that they come from N.H.

my wife&I are avid campers. I find that most camp grounds have fire wood , no kindling. The result being,that every time we go camping, we first go over to Aubuchon to by this kindling which I might add works very well.
