20 Best Wood For Soundproofing (2022 Updated)

I have had foam on my walls for a few years and they have worked well. I have never been a fan of how much space they take and the aesthetics of how they look. My room felt closed in so I settled on these panels.

They absolutely work great! They are light so hanging them is a breeze. I’m not a fan of permanent installations so I used 20lb picture hangars as they fit through the metal plates. This made lining them all up a breeze.

I like the look they provide as it’s far more professional but also the sound is improved while taking up less wall space. I have had them installed for a few weeks without any need to readjust anything while recording.

These have exceeded my expectations and I only wish I would’ve went the panel route the first time.

I’ve purchased 2 of the Primacoustic London 8 kits, and 2 of the bigger ones (either 10 or 12. ) These are top notch, used in the best recording, mixing, and mastering studios the world over. Room treatment is a serious task, and Primacoustic seriously delivers.

You can hear the room transforming right in front of you as each individual piece is installed. Instillation is extremely simple. The units go up in just a few minutes. They look fantastic, too. I was surprised at just how much mass each piece has, which is what room treatment requires; mass.

These are made to last.

I bought these in beige color to go in my video studio. They are very well made, don’t smell bad, and look awesome. Only complaint: they are pricey. The same “sound absorption effectiveness” can be had quite a bit cheaper with 2 inch generic auralex-style foam.

However, I chose to spend the money because I wanted exactly what these deliver: absorption panels covered with a very nice looking, tightly stretched cloth, over a rigid frame that can be attached to the wall or hung from the ceiling.

The panels also have a very nice beveled edge. I would give 5 stars if the set was cheaper.

The Boom Mat products are excellent. I have a 2015 Toyota Prius. Love the car for what it is but it does have very little sound insulation in it for weight saving. So a change was needed. I purchased the 10 pack of the Boom Mat insulation and started from the back of the car.

I soon realized that I would need more. So back to Summit Racing and I got the 20 pack. Seems that 30 pieces of this product is needed for a complete sound insulation of a car. The Prius is now as quiet as my Lexus LS430.

no really it is. so quiet that I cannot hear the tires splashing water in a rain storm. So quiet that I can hear the radio without the tinny road noise that is so common on cars with almost no insulation.

The doors now shut with a muffled thunk instead of sounding like a cheap bell. This product works well on car doors as well as floors. Note: The Boom Mat Acoustic Insulation should be used with other sound insulation such as sound absorbing mat.

This product reduces panel vibration as well as other more expensive products but does not work as well with other noises. A three layer approach is what is needed on the floor and wheel wells. Those products are also available from Summit Racing.

Was it worth it? Yes it was. It has made my Prius so quiet that I prefer driving it to my Lexus. Yeah the Prius is not as fast as the Lexus but I sure save a ton on gasoline and this insulation along with other products has made this Prius a joy to travel long distances with.

I highly recommend the Boom Mat Acoustic Insulation.

I won’t say I have used every insulation product out there, but I own a Hot Rod shop and have insulated many cars. Of the products I have used, Boom Mat is by far my favorite. It is very dense – if you buy the 30-piece box you’ll be amazed at how heavy it is.

You can take your piece of Boom Mat and press it (with backing still on) into the area you want to install it, and it will hold it’s shape so you can cut to fit, remove backing, and press/roll into place.

Very easy to cut, and once attached it stays attached. Just buy it!.

I used Roxul Comfort Batts to insulate a crawlspace. Friction fit (in between 2X6 floor joists) is perfect–stays put with no wires or other supports. Uniformity of size and stiffness of each batt (compared to fiberglass batts) allow for sharp corners, and elimination of gaps.

Sound absorption is excellent. Exceeds fire code requirements. I also installed 1/2 foil-faced polyiso foam boards to the bottom of the joists in the crawlspace (covering the roxul), and then taped the joints.

Lots of work to do the whole crawlspace (approximate 1,500 sf), but immediate and significant difference apparent inside–warmer floors, no echoing of footsteps, and the spin cycle on the washer in the laundry room–which used to vibrate/resonate through the whole house–is completely gone.

I also did a research project recently, and discovered how the fact that we focus on “r-value” (ignoring air flow) and the use of fiberglass (ignoring rock wool) are due more to marketing than insulating performance properties.

If you look at Europe, which was not subjected to marketing onslaught of US manufacturers, you find much more common usage of rock-wool, as opposed to fiberglass. I expect we will see a slow but steady surge in the adoption of rockwool over fiberglass here in the US.

The product (at least not in the retail locations where I have to buy it as a non-contractor) is not cheap, but I think it’s worth it. Easy 5 stars.

I’m finishing my basement and This stuff works great. Noticed a difference right away. i only used the 3inch stuff but obviously the 6 inch would be even better. I used it in the ceilings and around the bathroom, bedroom and furnace room.

No complaints at all. Just make sure you wear a mask and eye protection especially if you’re working with it over your head. You’ll get a bunch of stuff in your eyes and cough a lot.

DON’T BUY THIS! These are not acoustic tiles. This is light porous foam that might be suitable as a filter for your hair dryer but is absolutely not sound proof. 96 tiles were vac packed into a 1’x2′ package if that gives you an idea of their structure.

Perfect for home theater. Excellent size and does the job well for noise reduction. Highly recommend this product !!

These really do the job beautifully and look great. I’m not sure I like the new ‘pointed’ design as much as the previous ‘flat-nosed’ version, and these are also a lot more flexible, but they sound great.

I used the EZ-Stick Pro tabs to mount them for the first time, which are brilliant. Such a shame that EVERY time I’ve ordered from PMT they fail to despatch in time for their promised ‘Next Day’ delivery – this time I ordered at 1026, on a Monday, well before the 1500 cut off, and they still didn’t bother despatching until the Tuesday.

When I called to find out why they couldn’t be bothered to help at all.

I’ve had my home project studio for about a year. A friend of mine interviewed me in my studio with his great video equipment for a project he was working on. When I watched the video I really noticed how “live” my room was.

I could hear a lot of echo/reverb in the video. I had been researching Auralex for a while and knew it was time to make my next studio upgrade. Friends, this stuff is amazing. I installed this kit in about an hour using command brand 3M velcro.

I noticed a difference in my studio immediately as each panel went up. Having a home studio it’s sometimes hard to know where to put your money to improve the quality of your sound, recording, and mixes.

I would encourage everyone to take the time to research what Auralex product will best fit your studio. There are excellent resources online that will help you choose what will best work for you & also how to place the panels (youtube, auralex.

com). This kit of 12 worked excellent in my studio. I’m gearing up to place my next order of Aurlaex products to complete a few more reflection points. Oh yea, not only do they work great. they look cool too!.

I’ve been using Auralex Studiofoam for over a decade. I’ve purchased a variety of styles and thickness for different sized rooms. I still have all of the different Studiofoam panels and currently use them.

Because I use these for my home studio and because I don’t own a home, I mounted all the different style panels onto 1/4 pegboard sheets which can be installed and removed easily with minimal labor. I would recommend any of the Auralex Studiofoam panels, styles and thickness to all my musician and studio owner friends.

IšverstiShow in original languageI purchased 3 of these for my massage treatment room. It is connected to another room by double doors so we can accommodate couples massages but you could hear everything as if it were in your own room.

I hung 2 of the sheets over the doors and the result is incredible. I had one of my coworkers talk to me through the doors with the sound panels and even at higher than normal talking volume it was muffled enough to barely notice it.

So glad I made this purchase. Plus they are extremely easy to install. The benefits far exceed the cost, which doesn’t seem expensive but I have no knowledge of professional studio equipment.

IšverstiShow in original languageI saw one of these sheets being used at a friend’s house for sound isolation against fireworks for her dog on the 4th of July. She told me about the company and I decided to buy one for over my door of my apartment since I am frequently recording my band; Boxcar in there.

The neighbors are cool; but drums are loud and I want to be a courteous neighbor; and I don’t want their sound bleeding in either. I was really impressed at the sound dampening. It make for less room sound in the recording and takes out weird room reflections.

I ended up liking it so much I bought another one. I use that one on the opposite wall to great effect. I can pull them off the wall and door easily and store them when I’m not using them. I even have used them as baffles when recording piano and stand up bass at the same time in the apartment.

I just now ordered the smaller door version (Isolé) so I don’t wake up my girlfriend in the middle of the night with my musical shenanigans. I pretty much need to use these as wall paper! hehe. Love these sheets though; they have made all my recordings sound way more professional; and I know the neighbors appreciate them.

My only concern is that the grommets are not consistently spaced and positioned from sheet to sheet, making interchangeability between their hanging positions unworkable.

Otherwise, these are quite impressive. I still recommend them.

Be aware that the product you will recieve is NOT the product pictured. The product being shipped does not have the dense bitumen type layer shown in the picture. Additionally, it measures 7/8 of an inch thick , which is 1/16th of an inch LESS than the diameter of a quarter.

The darker high density layer which in the picture is thicker than the Liberty lettering on the quarter is missing. The product being shipped is 7/8 th inch acoustic foam only, without any high density damping layer whatsoever I talked at length with several Parts Express representatives who all said that what is being shipped looks to them to be identical to the picture.

They offered to refund my money, but the return shipping cost would be a significant because of the bulk of the package. I said that what was most important to me was that they either put an accurate photo of the product being shipped, or at least revise the description to state that the product does not have the high density layer depicted in the photo.

I was told that they would take my issue “under advisement. ” Since a month has passed and no changes have been made in the listing I am reluctantly posting this review so that other customers will not make the same mistake I did.

In my 5 years as a customer, this is the first negative experience i have had with Parts Express. I think they are a great company and have had many positive experiences with them. I post this in the hope that it will lead to the photo or description being changed to accurately reflect the product being shipped.

Note that my poor ratings of it are based on its worth as a acoustic foam-damping material. It probably is a perfectly fine as an acoustic foam only product.

Are use these on my electric F6 tower speakers, before I added the foam I added car sound deadening in the interior of the entire speaker. I then went ahead and added this foam in the entire interior of the speaker, the results are absolutely amazing, every aspect of the speaker changed sonically.

The high, mids and bass all gained clarity and even the soundstage improved. I am not kidding when I say that my speakers sound like completely different speakers. The towers feel like a solid piece of rock, they are incredibly solid and sturdy and not to mention the weight has gone up very very significantly.

These foam sheets are absolutely 100% worth the price they are asking, they transform your speakers in an incredible way. Don’t listen to the people that say they can barely notice a difference, that is absurd.

I can’t speak definitively toward this products impact on resonance because my designs have extra bracing trying to push resonance up into frequency ranges beyond hearing. However, I do have something to contribute related to reflections.

After finally finishing my design and fabrication of custom parallel Esoteric L/C/R front stage 3-way, dual woofer, dual mid, Canadian single RT true ribbon tweeter speakers I noticed a bit of reflection.

Each one has a medium application of Acousta-Stuf Polyfill. I could definitely hear the impact of having the waves bounce around the raw MDF inside. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I originally expected, but I could hear it as a subtle addition with certain frequencies in songs.

It was particularly evident with Metallica in general. After applying Sonic Barrier to just about every existing surface inside the cabinets the anomalies were either eliminated completely or reduced out of noticeable range.

I’d call that a success. I needed something to do this job and this product served the purpose. It’s 4/5 stars because the price puts it out of range of folks with extremely limited budgets trying to solve these problems in their larger projects.

I’d like to see the company drop the prices to be more reasonable in consideration of sheer size for people fitting this category. At the core of DIY is the fact many people are looking to solve problems where cash is short.

A professional grade product they can actually afford would probably turn this product into a defacto go-to solution, dramatically increasing its notoriety, appeal and ROI.

I watched the video installing my SOUNDFIX 43”x17” Rectangular Acoustic Sound Absorbing Panels, first. Glad I did, great tips. I didn’t know if I woudl actually be able to hear a difference or not. I love music, especially heavy bass.

Usually the volume and intensity of my music upsets others in the home. SO I set these up and was surprised at how the other rooms were more quiet. How things didn’t rattle and shake in the main room.

SO all in all pretty good absorption without losing the tone and sound that I am used to.

These panels were used inside of a small studio in conjunction with other panels of a different brand. The panels presented the quality that was needed to withstand the amount of sound that needed to be captured.

The best part was that it helped to balance the acoustics in the room. We utilized a shed which was horrible for the sound, but the panels truly helped with that. I would recommend this purchase for a small studio.

I got these panels for my sons room who is always on his games. Screaming into his headset and getting all rowed up in his electronics world. His streaming and chatting with friends over microphones and late night activities were causing turmoil in our home.

These panels have worked splendidly to reduce his noise from leaving his room and improved the sound quality in his room. Easy to hang like a regular picture frame ,this is the answer we’ve been looking for.

After years of taking the cheap way out wit competing products I decided to try Xtreme based upon reviews. The difference is astonishing! Even with a very basic installation covering only my doors and floor.

Firstly it is much thinner and more flexible (and thus easier to install) but once applied actually performs better. After the first success I applied it over the competitions product on my other car and it quieted the car so much more than the original did, normally a second layer is a waste of money but the competition had been so ineffective.

Next thing I noticed is no stink, no asphalt stink, no musty stink, nothing! Amazing product at an amazing price!.

Dynamat is one of the most recognised names in sound deadening. and to be fair that is because they deliver a quality product. If you buy a box of Dynamat you know that it will be a good CLD material that deadens sound as it should and it will not have any problems with being flimsy, not sticking, sticking for a while but eventually coming off or worse melting on a hot day etc.

However it is pricey for what it is; and compared to other brands. Most brands do a CLD and there are plenty that are perfectly fine for less money. There are even some China imports that are near half the price and I believe they perform well.

‘I believe’ they do anyway. I doubt I will ever use them. Dynamat is one of the most expensive CLD’s to buy. but I am putting it in a brand new WRX. it is sort of product that you know will work well; and you cannot have (and absolutely refuse even the thought of!) a massive failure and a mess to clean up and redo.

Peace of mind is worth the few extra dollars. This is a review of Dynamat so I won’t say too much. but if I could suggest that people make sure they understand what a CLD is and what it does! Say compared to a decoupled MLV layer or a CCF layer or a combination or even OCF may be appropriate.

You have done it wrong if you put tonnes of Dynamatin your car for sound proofing but none of the others.

“install dynamat first and leave the noise behind” – Well. Let’s be honest now. This is advertised as a cure all for sound deadening, and being that it’s so widely praised by all the big names in the custom car industry, I thought I’d bite the bullet and buy the expensive bulk kit so I might finally make my Citroen 2cv quiet at high speed.

If I’m honest with myself though, it hasn’t made the slightest difference where sound deadening is concerned. What it has done is made the doors close with a much more satisfying thump, it really does help there, and knocking on the bonnet makes a much better sound then it did before.

After all though it’s still as loud as it ever was, even with 10 kilos of this stuff in there. I suppose it might make more of a difference in something like a van, where the interior space acts as much more of an echo chamber than any car, but it hasn’t worked for me.

This is a great product by the way if you want to reduce vibration, no question there, but it’s strongly advertised as sound insulation and that it most definitely is not. I’m being told I should have put what they call closed cell foam underneath the bonnet if I wanted to silence the engine, and I’m tempted to go that route now, I know dynamat makes that too, but I won’t be overspending on their version of it after this disappointment.

100 miles down the road from when I installed it and I can confirm that this is a grossly overhyped product and it probably won’t help you in whatever civilian application you intend it for.

Overall: I was worried it wasn’t going to be enough to cover my room but it ended up being plenty. Does wonders for the sound of the room they are hung in. I was hoping (not expecting) for some “Sound proofing” (as in keeping sound only in the same room as the speakers) but this doesn’t do much in that department.

Makes THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE on my microphone recordings. Well worth the $$$$. Not to mention the visual pleasure I get walking into the room their hanging in. Looks and sounds professional. Wish it wasn’t so expensive, but you get what you pay for! Still waiting for the “Foam pit” smell to leave my room.

I only notice when I first walk into the room and it is starting to dissipate after a couple weeks.

After receiving recommendations from Auralex for acoustic treatments for my project studio, I ordered this kit and had it installed by a professional studio designer. After installation, my mixing room sounds 1000% better and it wasn’t bad before.

Bass frequencies are now a lot tighter, focused and well-defined. Additionally, mid and high frequencies are smoother. Only complaint is that there were not enough adhesive pads included but not a big deal.

Some users may complain that the foam does not look as professional as fabric covered treatments; however, we have had nothing but compliments concerning the look of our studio since the installation.

In fact, a client booked a session just to take photos for Insta-gram and Facebook. Otherwise, an effective product that any serious residential-based project studio should have.

These are not the small tiles they are large and thick, the bass traps are massive. This is quality for real, they make my studio look and sound like that of the big money big time studios. I am so glad I decided to go with this kit, its definitelythe real deal.

I am starting a van conversion [a big empty box commercial vehicle] and wanted to make any trips we took in it as pleasant as possible. After owning an electric car [Chevy Volt], we became used to the extreme quiet such a vehicle offers and we wanted to try and experience this same level of comfort in this van.

After checking out recommendations from others on the web, I leaned to the reliable Dynamat until I found out how much it would cost to cover every square inch of the interior of this big box. So, I searched for lower cost alternatives of which there were several and most out-gassed or melted down in the heat or were inferior in noise reduction.

Then I came across Noico in an installation video on Youtube. I watched as the 80 mil self-adhesive strips rolled down with ease and looked essentially identical to the trusty Dynamat. I ordered eight boxes and went to work.

First, the van is new and the interior clean so degreasing was easy. BUT the Ford Transit 250 has a double-wall construction that makes it very difficult to get anything against the surface to be tamed.

Many cutouts were only large enough for my hand to fit into and some were totally accessible so I did the best I could and hoped it would do. Wheel wells are a major noise source and I attacked them hard laying down as much as I could [remember the double-wall? Yup, it was there too.

]. I took my time and next were the rear doors, essentially empty cavities. I noticed that the vapor barrier was present on one side and not on the other [so much for robotics] and used two layers of 2″ thick polyester insulation and a layer of Reflectix as a final solution in these doors.

I quickly ran out of the polyester insulation [Mountain Mist] and had to treat the remaining walls waiting on the insulation to arrive. Each day, I would do another section and each day *MAJOR* improvements in noise reduction resulted.

The RH sliding door and roof were last and I have yet to do the cab floor, doors, and roof. However, noise levels are not quite acceptable as compared to our Chevy Volt. Road noise is pretty much a thing of the past but engine noise and heat is something I must address in the future, something beyond this review.

In summary, we are thrilled with the results at about half the cost of Dynamat. Two things I like better about Noico: 1) it is thicker and therefore reduces noise better [80 mil vs. 60 mil], and 2) Noico has these little diamond patterns on the foil that make straight lines easy to cut and tell you that you have already rolled over an area [both extremely useful].

Now there isone thing I wish they did not do: fold the product in the shipping box. They take three sheets and then tri-fold them before putting them into a box. Two sets of these three-layer folded sheets are in each box leaving two nasty crunched-up strips on every sheet.

While it did nothing adverse to the application [smoothed out easily with the roller and left no air bubbles] it would make an installers [read your] life easier if it came packed flat without folds.

In summary, if I were you I would give Noico a try. It applies identical to Dynamat and IMHO works better for less money. Attached pics show the wheel well with Noico then layered with Reflectix then covered with the stock plastic wheel well cover.

Notice the double-wall construction of this van and the limited access to the outer wall. My hands are well scratched and fingers raw after a solid week of work, 8-12 hours a day for 7 days.

This stuff works really well. It came quickly, was delivered in only a few days, and was super simple to install. I would recommend a utility knife with multiple sharp blades, as the tinfoil dulls the blades quickly.

The adhesive holds well, and the before and after is incredible. I covered the underside of the hood, trunk floor, all door panels, trunk lid, and rear deck panel. This stuff got rid of several rattles, and the before and after for sound is fantastic.

There was a bit of shipping damage, but other than that, no problems at all. Also, the price was great, but keep in mind you will need to find a roller.

I have done my entire car with sound deadener and have used several different brands. Noico is by far superior to any other available. If you look at the weight of the product compared to other bigger names you’ll find the Noico comes in at 27 pounds for the box of 36 square feet.

The super well known brand of sound deadener comes in 5 pounds less and costs way more. I used two layers of Noico in the new areas and placed a single layer over the old material I started with. I won’t use any other brand again, ever.

The level of difference in my automobile is incredible. The doors when closed are solid. The “tinny” sound that you get from the car is gone. It makes no noise at all any more. The only thing I hear are the tires on the pavement.

The body flex is gone, the creaks, rattles and shakes are all gone. The car is silent in every way. The stereo sounds better, the environment is more comfortable and sealed, the car has better ground contact.

It’s absolutely incredible. I stand behind Noico 100%. It is the top of the line product of which you won’t find better.

First, this product does have a scent that dissipates quickly after being left unrolled in a garage or other open area. Second, it is very heavy and if you’re installing upright, you will need multiple people to hold it up.

It is thick and thin if that makes sense; very dense as it should be. This stuff is very malleable when warm and conforms to spaces well. It also was quite easy to cut when it is warm. I left it out in the sun for a little while and had no issues cutting right through with a box cutter.

I used this in the trunk of my car and floorboard under my carpet to deaden noise from highway driving and it worked 10x better than dynomat or other sound deadening products made specifically for auto applications.

It was easy to cut to fit and melded into nooks and crannies very well. I couldn’t be happier with the installation process and results!.

I took my inner door panels off my SUV and put a layer of this on the inner surface of the door skin for all 4 doors, then a layer on the inner surface of the inner skin, 1 layer on the rear hatch door.

Used to be that you couldn’t hold a conversation at 75+ MPH without yelling, now it is so much more quiet inside. Worth every penny for 2 & 1/2 rolls. I’ll find a place under the carpet for the 1/2 roll that’s left.

Most difficult part of working with it is how very sticky it is. Sticky is great for having it stay where you put it though.

This product seems to be of good quality. After installing it on the floorboard of my 91 Jimmy, I can see why it’s also sold in smaller pieces. It does stick well( to everything ). A heat gun and roller molds it pretty good.

I’m sure there are better procedures that what I used to install it. So My suggestion to the manufacture would be include some instructions and suggestions for install. Can’t wait to get the interior back in to see how it helps noise.

This is a good product. It forms well. I do recommend using a heat gun. It will help soften it up to form and also it will make it more sticky. I would definitely use this product again.

Thanks to all who warned me that the adhesive is very sticky. I placed smaller pieces, easier to work with. My box was stuffed with fiberfill. I also listened to the box with out foam. The foam reduced boom, cleaned up the bass, yet sounded like a bigger box due to the extra internal air space compared to the fiberfill.

I’ll buy it again.

Great product and really made a difference. The backing needs to be supplemented by glue or hangars as the weight of the insulation is too much for it to hang unsupported. Also works best with deadening panels to stop vibration and if applicable new seals for whatever you are trying to insulate.

Very pleased with it. I used 45mm on ceiling of engine compartment and the 12 mm on the sides and back wall. The sound proofing properties performed up to my expectation. As well it will form a fire barrier should the occasion arise.

One particular YouTube channel turned me on to this product. I bought a 50’s home that still had some weird Kimsul insulation in it. The R3ish this stuff was won’t cut it in New England winters. Gutted the second floor first and every wall upstairs now has rockwool in it.

I love it. I don’t hear the highway anymore, the rooms stay perfect temp with the mini splits only. Easy to install and love how you can carve out the batt to fit where you need it. Going to put another order in soon for the first floor and between the floors.

Then I’ll finish the basement with it.

We have been using RockWool on our interior residential renovation products for quite some time. It is a no brainer for us and for us to utilize on our projects. Its resistance to mold, rot, mold, and mildew because it is made of spun stone that cannot absorb and hold water is amazing and a game changer.
