I’ve had a can of the Kona stain forever and have used it on many projects. The color is deep and rich. Always do a test spot first because, depending on the wood, the color will come out different, always beautiful, but differ000000000ent.
It’s easy to use and I’ve never had streaking or splotching with it. It is oil-based so I always use disposable tools or simply wipe it on with a blue paper shop towel. Once top-coated with poly, it looks utterly amazing.
I went against everything in my brain telling me not to buy a stain online. wow did it pay off! This stain is amazing! It absolutely coats in 1 coat and leaves a really rich grey color behind, I used a rag to rub some of it off so it was a bit more rustic, however I love the stain either way! Great product!.
Love the product. Applies so easy. I use it on my farm wood signs to stain It is washable. I don’t not apply a coating after. My sign has been outside all last winter and this summer. Looks as good as it was first done.
General Finishes uses only the finest oils, resins and pigments to produce stains that are rich in color and so easy to use that magazines and woodworkers have been raving about their excellence for over 40 years.
Stains may be applied by clean cloth (please dispose of responsibly), brush or by spray. As with all pigmented stains, please stir well to ensure the pigment is well dispersed throughout the liquid prior to use.
Clean up with mineral spirits. Use the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining new or bare soft and porous wood surfaces such as with Aspen or Pine, as it penetrates the grain of the wood to promote uniform acceptance of stain and prevents streaking and blotching to help ensure a beautiful, even stain.
Not a very consistent product on its own. Medium to larger projects require additives, but are sold separately. Sometimes the project comes out great the first shot, sometimes it takes a redo or two.
I see other reviewers that had the same issue even with extender. Oil based stains work far better and don’t require all the fancy additives to get a consistently good and even stain. I’ve been on the fence with this stain.
Smaller projects it can be flawless. Larger projects. I have to say the Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, and all kinds of prayers in hopes that it works 😅Sooooo back to oil based stains!.
This stuff was infuriating because its not like oil based where you wipe it on and then wipe it off and have all the time in the world. I tried doing a 36″x47″ panel with this and first i tried hand applying then wipe off and it was already dry so i had no time to wipe off.
Failed. Then i tried spraying from my Fuji Q5 to increase speed and wipe off, again dried too fast and failed. 3rd test i did was fhe magic ticket. Spray it on thin but coat it all and DONT TOUCH IT, and it turns out fantastic, although very dark.
So the key with this stuff is dont listen to can instructions and basically treat it like paint.

I found this to be mess free & really easy to use. Easy clean up too. It perfectly highlighted the wood grain in an 80’s coffee table I found in a thrift shop. Table was in excellent condition in honey oak finish so I used the Dark Mahogany.
A penetrating water-based wood stain that’s easy to use, water cleanup and fast-drying. Provides a unique, subtle shade of white color to any unfinished wood surface. Ideal for use on unfinished furniture, doors, molding, and other interior wood surfaces.
Minimize blotching and streaking by using Minwax Water Based Pre-Stain Conditioner. Should be top coated with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish.
I just purchased an older make up vanity that I wanted to re-purpose for my bedroom. I sanded the vanity down in the wood was absolutely stunning so I didn’t want to cover the woodgrain and paint I wanted to give it color but also show the beauty of the wood.
I decided to give this mini wax color wash and try. I am absolutely blown away with the results. The color is so beautiful and it pulls the wood green detailing perfectly giving it color but not washing it out to where you cannot see how perfect the wood pattern actually is.
This stuff is really easy to work with. It was not hard to use i at all. It left a beautiful finish and absolutely stunning color. One of the major bonus is that it dried within a couple hours and there’s hardly any odor to it at all.
The finish is absolutely stunning it looks amazing on my new vanity. I am so so glad that I picked mini wax instead of using paint. This stuff is perfect for detailing wood giving it that vibrant color that allows you to still have a natural wood grain with a little pop of color.
they have a few different finishes to pick from but I picked the gray and it’s absolutely beautiful. A little bit of this stuff goes a long way I applied the first coat and could’ve stopped there but I applied a second coat to give it a little bit more color and then I absolutely love the way it turned out.
I will be detailing the woodwork in my bathroom with this stuff next using a different finish. If you’re new to using mini wax this is one that will be very simple for you to use. The mini wax is very easy to work with it you should not be intimidated and you will be very happy with the finished product.
I received the miniwax design series color wash, and can’t wait to use this to whitewash my porch swings this spring. I’ve used many stains from this brand in the past, and I have never been disappointed with the final product.
I did give this product a trial on some natural wood pieces in my home and I think the color will be beautiful when finished. The color is buildable, so you can start with a coat, and build it for deeper cover.
It does seem that a small amount will go a long way, as it does provide great coverage. But again, the color is buildable, so you could go for a lighter whitewashed appearance with a natural wood grain, or build it for deeper coverage.
This product is made for indoor use, so exposure to outdoor elements is not recommended. I do plan to use on my screened in porch. The product can be used over wood stains for an antiqued appearance.
This would be beautiful for use on indoor fireplaces or exposed bricks.
I’ve used the Minwax brand for years but always skipped the pre-staining conditioner until now. After some disappointing staining results on a pine desk (areas of the wood turned black instead of the light brown color that I was going for), I decided to try this product for my pine rounds project.
It was easy to apply with a rag. It soaked right in. I wiped off the excess after 15 mins and applied the Minwax honey stain. I also stained the backside of the rounds that weren’t conditioned to compare.
In the end, there was not a huge difference between the conditioned and bare surface after staining. However, the pre-conditioned side matched the color reference more closely. It had a slight extra sheen and the knots didn’t get black so that’s a plus.
My personal opinion is that it’s not necessary for all staining projects but if you’re working on something that you want as perfect as possible, this will give the finish a little boost when it’s all said and done.

This penofin product is really great. The results bring out the woods beauty. I put it over wood the had a water sealer. Even though I thoroughly sanded the fence, not all the seal was off. This causes the oil to be shinny when it covers the sealer.

Prepared my American Walnut grips for my Crosman 2240. Sanded smooth and got rid of all dust. Used a small hobby brush to lace it on. Went on lovely and very easy to use. It was a little darker on one part, so I used a wet sponge and wiped it gently which lightened the colour.
Allowed to dry (few hours, but ideally overnight) applied a touch up coat, this was the result once dried. Very happy indeed! I’m also using the Tru oil, on my second coat now, so excited for when their finished.

Applied per wet/wet instructions. Last fall I was quite pleased with the results of staining my deck with Defy. However when I returned from my winter home in May, I was quite shocked at how poorly it survived the winter.
I have photos of how it looks less thana year of use (8 or 9 months). Undoubtedly the worst stain I have ever used. Larry Bulinski.
Defy Extreme is a great wood stain. Butternut is a medium dark stain, similar to an aged cherry or light walnut. Following the directions for prep is important and using care in application will give you a very beautiful deck or porch!.

Superior wood stain saves time, energy and provides a great value. Easy to apply with a good quality synthetic brush or clean lint free rag without the need for pre-stain or wood conditioner.
I bought this to use on floating shelves I made, thinking it perfectly matched our new flooring. I was just going off of the colour on the can. Way off. Our floors are a nice rich walnut colour with lots of highlights and lowlights, but nothing this dark.
This stain looks like melted milk chocolate in the can but applies about as dark as fully roasted coffee beans. Is it really that hard to take an honest photo of the product and put that on the label? What’s the point of even having an image for reference? Totally stupid, can’t undo it, now what.
Besides that, it’s a fine stain product I guess. If you want to compare with something, I recommend asking a home depot staff to let you do a sample blotch on your material from a small can. Otherwise you’re truly guessing and you’re going to be wrong.
This stain is very easy to apply and this is why I like it. Use a rag to apply light coats and away you go. I find oil based stains bring grain patterns out very nicely. The look is striking but natural.
This is a cutting edge, robust oil-based stain. It’s thick, rich formula allows easy application and superior color control, necessary to achieve a rich and uniform color on most surfaces in a single application.
Tried 6 different stains and am very happy with Old Masters oil-based White Pickeling Stain. I bought a live edge coffee table on EBay and was really disappointed with the glossy deep yellow tone of the wood which did not show up in the EBay photos.
The original plan was to stain it Walnut. I tested a swatch of Verathane and Minwax oil based Walnut and Special Walnut and they looked terrible-‘flat’, unnnatural, and reddish. I then tried a Verathane oil based Weathered grey and a Behr water-based Classic grey and both looked blue and not natural.
I tried Behr Water based pickling and it barely colored the wood. The Old Master White Pickling Stain really ‘stained’ and lightened the wood and it looks very natural. I’m not sure what type of wood i have but i think its a very yellow-toned maple and now it looks like Eucalyptus toned.
Other reviews say you might get a pinkish tone and i do see a pinkish/ peach hue but only 5%. a very slight tonal shade-totally acceptable. I finished with a matte water-based Verathane finish to eliminate the yellow tones.
It took me a day or two to accept that my initial vision (walnut) wasn’t going to work with the wood i have, but now I am super happy with how it turned out. It looks great! In the future I will ALWAYS go with oil based which seems to penetrate the wood better and look natural.
I have used this stain in the past. It turned oak doors into a work of art. I recently used it on 6 panel pine doors. Also with beautiful results. Many compliments came my way. I use a soft cloth to apply the stain and rub with the grain.
I wait 24 hours and then apply polyurethane varnish. I am totally satisfied with this product. I showed the younger generations how to use it. They love it too.

About Americana Gel Stain -Americana Gel Stains are perfect for producing antiqued or stained finishes on wood or other hard surfaces. Their thick and creamy consistency makes it easy to work without making a mess, and the water-based formula eliminates the fumes of typical oil-based products.
This product works well on wood, ceramic bisque, paper mache, resins, and plastercraft. To use for staining, apply Americana Gel Stain to surface and then wipe it down with a soft, lint-free cloth. For additional highlights, allow one hour drying time and then use a soft, damp cloth to add further stain.
When using on wood, you can mix 25% Multi-Purpose Sealer with 75% Americana Gel Stain to seal and stain at the same time. For antiquing apply a thin coat of Americana Gel Stain and wipe off with a soft cloth before the stain can dry.
This product renewed my antique maple furniture – there was so much damage to the wood i thought i would have to have it professionally refinished. This product REALLY works and saved me a lot of money and it was so simple to use and not messy like some stains.
A little goes a long way. I will be purchasing additional stain colors for all my wood furniture!.
Was sent a badly leaking bottle. Leaked so bad the top was flooded with the brown stain. Unable to return due to postal restrictions. Who would send a leaking bottle to a paying customer?—an irresponsible seller, that’s who.
Will not buy from seller again and will look elsewhere. Buyer beware.
Very good product. I managed to get great result when I used it. Pity I didn’t discover gel stains sooner, it could have prevented some disasters. Another added bonus with this product is that you can also use it as paint to achieve a different look.

ECOS Wood Stain – ECOS Wood Stain is a water based, tinted, full bodied, solvent free, fast drying stain, ideal for wooden floors, window frames, doors, trim, and furniture. Applied to bare wood to enrich the natural grain, adding depth and color.
Additional coats may be applied for enhanced depth. Available in several pre-mixed colors, without the harsh odors and harmful fumes commonly found in conventional products. ECOS Clear Varnish is required as a protective top coat for ECOS Wood Stains.
I did a practice with the stain on a flat board. Although I noticed it would soak into the wood quicker than conventional stain, it seemed that with quick and even-pressured strokes, it would be fine.
However, on the spindle style furniture I was refinishing, it was much more challenging and time consuming to try for an even application. I had to work quick while focusing on small areas and even then, I was disappointed in the final product.
However, the application of the clear satin varnish made a big difference giving it a more even looking finish and softening the chalkiness. My take away would be that in general I liked the fact that it was more environmentally friendly than conventional stain and its probably easier to use on less detailed wood.
I would use it again however I would be sure to use the clear varnish with it which gives it a finish I prefer.
Beautiful stain (Deep Smoke) that covered my large white oak project much better than I expected from a water based stain. I brushed it on then wiped off with a clean/dry cloth. I did notice that it applied a little easier first thing in the morning when it was slightly cooler (60°-ish) because it gave me longer working time.
As it warmed up during the day I had to be a little more careful with how I applied it in order to get perfectly even coverage. (I’m in Utah, very dry). It took just over half of a 1quart can to complete the Trundle Bed.
My plan was to apply a white glaze over the stain, but we liked the look of the Deep Smoke so much that we decided to keep it as it was. Topped it off with Ecos Interior Satin Clear Varnish.
It’s very thin and needs to be mixed well before using. Otherwise, the coverage is great – I ordered white and it covered as expected. I used this for the inside of my chicken coop to protect the wood from the elements and to make sure my girls won’t be pecking at anything harmful.

Varathane Premium Wood Stain penetrates up to twice as deep as competitive brands to reveal the beauty of natural wood grain.
Apply to wood for long-lasting, translucent stain. Uses exclusive soya-oil base and anti-settling formula for better grain enhancement with less stirring during application.
This stain is the best! You only really need apply it once and it dries very quickly. It’s got a pretty powerful smell, fumes, so I’d suggest to use it outdoors. I have purchased this stain for many projects around my home.
This brought out the wood grain, nicely. It does have quite a strong smell, so if inside, open those windows. This was used around 9am and by nightfall we were able to close the windows.
When it comes to staining wood, there are a few key things to keep in mind. First, it’s important to choose the right type of wood for your project. Second, you’ll need to prep the wood properly before beginning.
And finally, you’ll need to choose the right stain for the job.
When it comes to choosing the right type of wood, there are a few things to consider. The most important factor is the grain of the wood. Some woods, like pine, have a very open grain. This means that the pores in the wood are large and easily absorb stain.
Other woods, like oak, have a tighter grain. This means that the pores are smaller and the wood is more resistant to staining.
Once you’ve chosen the right type of wood, you’ll need to prep it properly before beginning. This means sanding the wood to create a smooth surface. You’ll also need to remove any existing finishes, like paint or varnish.
Once the wood is prepped, you’re ready to choose the right stain.
There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a stain. The first is the color. You’ll want to choose a stain that is the right color for your project. The second is the opacity. Some stains are very opaque, while others are more transparent.
You’ll want to choose a stain that will give you the right amount of coverage for your project.
Once you’ve chosen the right stain, you’re ready to apply it. Make sure to follow the instructions on the can carefully. You’ll want to apply the stain in even strokes, working in the direction of the grain.
Once you’re finished, allow the stain to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
When it comes to staining wood, the most important thing to remember is to take your time. Prep the wood properly and choose the right stain, and you’ll be sure to get great results.
