20 Best Wood For Surfboard (2022 Updated)

This bamboo pineapple cutting board is a different wood color than shown in the picture. The lower part of the pineapple shows up dark in the picture but mine is quite light and with almost a yellowish cast.

Nevertheless it will work for me so I am keeping it. The board is nice and smooth.

Such a cute piece! It’s a big small to use as an everyday cutting board, but is great for a cheese board when guests come over. I actually hung mine in my kitchen above where I cook as decor. So cute!

I mounted half of this so I’m storing 3 boards vertically right now. Mounting it was easy, I used anchors in drywall and it seems solid. The look of the wood is nice and matches the mahogany colored furniture I have.

I put a rug and rug pad under the boards to give them some cushion to sit on. Overall looks nice and is functional. The only thing I’d point out is that this rack is intended for horizontal storage, so the dips in the arms don’t serve any purpose.

Additionally, the arms are a little short for vertical storage of bigger boards–I have mostly fun and longboards and the arms of the rack aren’t very long. My first time taking a board out after mounting them, I knocked another board out of the rack.

I’m still happy with the rack overall and I’ll probably screw in hooks to the end of the arms so I can bungee/tie the boards in to be more secure.

Storeyourboard. com had EXACTLY what I was looking for for my boyfriend’s quiver. He loves his boards, yet has so many we don’t even know where to keep them all most of the time (not including his skateboards and snowboard).

I bought him the Surfboard Vertical Storage racks. They were perfect! Not only did he LOVE them because they kept all his boards neat and together and provided a special spot for all of them but because the racks looked sooo nice, even better than that at a skate or surf shop! It was beautiful dark wood that matched with the room perfectly and had great little rubber cushions to protect his precious boards, didn’t look cheap at all.

They were easy to put up and arrived sooner than expected very neatly packaged with good instructions. There is not a lot of physical labor needed to put these together. And on top of how irreproachably perfect they were, they were super inexpensive (best price I found).

This rack was the easiest installation I’ve done. We put it in a cutout in the wall of our master to make it easy to access and add to the bohemian surf shack vibe. The quality is there and customer service(when we had a defective screw) was quick to take care of our needs.

I use the wood to make Christmas ornaments. It is uniform in size and consistency and works well for this purpose. In the past I have made stools for my grandchildren from similar maple and it stained well and looked good with polyurethane finish.

Although made for children the stools would support my weight, which is in the neighborhood of 200 lbs. , so it is strong wood.

The pieces were great for making photo shelves for my home. My only complaint is that the lengths are not all the same. Most of them are exactly 24” long, but some are as much as 1/8” longer or shorter.

This became a problem since I don’t have tools to true them all up. I expected more quality control for the price. Nevertheless, the shelves look great, and I worked around the dimension problem.

I’m relatively new to paddleboarding and this is the first hard/ solid board I’ve bought. I have a few inflatable boards that I really like, but I wanted this one thinking it will be simpler not to have to inflate/ deflate at the lake; and thinking I’d like a board that will perform for many years without the worry of having to patch it.

I did a lot of research and Isle boards are very highly rated, most of the reviews of this board are five stars. The board arrived in a damaged box (holes/ tears, a footprint on the word “fragile” on the box), but was very well packaged and the board was undamaged.

I wanted to take it out for a paddle before I reviewed it and now I have been to the lake with it twice. I love how light this board is. The board also tracks well in the water and rides smooth. The surface of the board is nice and soft, but shows damage and wear very easily.

After two trips out, the cover is already showing tears, dings, and damage. The board also sits really low in the water, the sides are completely submerged when I stand on it. I’m a 5’6″, 140 lb woman, and I don’t carry a lot of stuff on the board.

I’m not sure if this is typical of all solid boards, but it’s taking some getting used to since my inflatables sit light on top of the water. Because of the way it sits down in the water, it feels unstable and there’s not a lot of room to move around.

I would not try to do yoga on this board, for example, and I would not attempt to take a dog with me on the board. For convenience/ ease of transport, I would give this board very high marks. It’s relatively easy to maneuver in the water.

I’m rating it lower due to the sinking feeling I get standing and sitting on the board in the water, and to the poor quality of the cover. I don’t see this board lasting many years. A paddleboard is a big investment for me and at this price, I am disappointed in the overall quality.

My son is 8 years old with no experience, under my supervision, he is able to stand up on this board quickly. I choose this board because it is 6″ thick like the big boards. I choose this because it is 28″ wide and it is great for kids to keep the paddle angle closer to vertical.

It has a relatively big fin that is bigger than I have used on full size boards. I don’t know if the 2 small fins are needed, they seem to just get in the way of folding. I am guessing there is a use case to not install the big fin and just only the 2 small fins in shallow water.

We are not doing that. Fit and finish is beautiful. This is my first purchase from Isle and the quality seems great. They forgot the send out the electric pump and it customer service quickly fixed it.

It has a weight limit of 145 lbs. I tried it myself, at 180 lbs, because of the narrow width 28″, it is rather challenging and tippy when combined with the short length. If you are thinking of buying this one board and sharing with your child, it probably won’t be a fun time for yourself unless you just like a challenge (even then speed will still be average or below).

For kids, they do not seem to have enough weight and height to make balance an issue. My son can step back and forth without falling and that’s a skill I’m working on myself, so the small board scale is great for him.

Overall, we are having fun with this SUP.

This cutting/serving board is so nice I had to practically tear it away from my husband so I could send it to my son for Christmas! It is so pretty it would almost be a shame to cut on it! You want to get the oil to treat the bamboo, I will have to go back to the store to get some.

I want this to stay nice for years. I got the state of Mass. for the in-laws, very well made too!.

Initially bought to use as a cutting board, but change my mind. Since I’m from the islands, it makes a great table top decorative piece.

This board makes the perfect mouse mat. Strange as it may seem to buy a chopping board for your computer desk it actually makes a whole lot more sense than you may realise. Normal mouse mats are usually a thin layer of felt stuck onto to some overly expensive pretentious piece of nonslip rubber that costs upwards of thirty to forty quid, is a haven for dust and dirt and perishes after repeated washes.

This little board on the other hand is incredibly easy to keep clean, its durable and nicely finished. A perfect surface for the laser of a high end optical mouse. And if push comes to shove I have something stylish to serve cheese on too winwin all round, huzzah.

Really nice finish. The wood has deep colour and came already oiled to a degree facilitating maintenance. Perfect size for medium jobs in the kitchen. Note this one doesnt have a rivet preventing occasional dripping so it will fare better with dry produce.

This was clearly visible on the picture so I wouldnt count it against the product. Plus the somewhat lifted edges make it easier to pick up when done.

I like these chopping boards a great deal. Theyre quite pleasant to use and washing up isnt terribly difficult, unlike the larger boards that you struggle to fit in the sink. Theres a good feel when chopping on it with a decent knife.

My flatmate did accidentally put one through the dishwasher and it warped, but I wouldnt blame it on the board.

I’m not a surfer but the board first starting out is encouraging. Plus it doesn’t hurt so bad when you get hit in the head with the board. Overall though I was pleasantly surprised for the quality of the board and leash for the price.

Very good value. Also most surfing instructors suggest you get a ‘foamy’ before you purchase a real board. Good advice, and this is an excellent board to try out the sport.

For weekend warriors this board is brilliant. I’ve been surfing for 30 years and have had more good rides on average (UK) waves than the the rest of my boards put together. Obviously doesn’t have the feel of a proper fiberglass board in quality waves but for summer slop and onshore mess this board gives me way more fun than I’ve ever had.

Super easy to paddle into waves.

Got this for lazy days and small conditions. Took it to Cornwall and was pleasantly surprised how easy it catches waves and turns. Definitely a worthwhile board to have in your quiver for days when you just want to have some easy fun.

Surface is grippy without wax.

I am an intermediate surfer who loves nearly everything about Firewire’s catalogue, range, and philosophy. I typically surf a Seaside, with an Evo for slightly bigger or more aggressive days and a foamy for slightly smaller or more lazy days.

I thought the Greedy Beaver would be a nice complement to the quiver for average days. And in hopes of making things easier on myself, I added a few liters and inches to my everyday board. Unfortunately, even with the additional size, the board still paddles far slower than any of my other boards.

And although it turns much better than the foamy (certainly not as quick and tight as the Seaside or Evo, but that probably is in part a function of the additional size), it is squirrely and slow. The marketing is good.

But in my opinion, your money is better spent on a different board. For the same general wave range, I would highly, highly recommend the Seaside. If you want additional performance, I would recommend an Evo or Dominator.

And if you want additional paddle or grovel power, go with a Potato, longboard, or foamy.

I’m 5’10, 160lb, over 50 and I bought the 6’8 GB as a board to go between my 7’6 LibTech Pickup Stick and a 6’1 Baked Potato, which were both at 52 liters. The GB is easy to paddle but 3 liters less buoyant than my Baked Potato and LibTech so it doesn’t feel corky like the Baked Potato did.

The pin tail really grabs onto steeper waves, and the shorter and narrower width also makes turning easy without being too twitchy like the Baked Potato. I found the flat tail of the Baked Potato too buoyant on steeper waves.

Of course, every time anyone sees the wood grain on a Firewire board they come to ask about it. Black Friday enabled me to order the board for $100 less. So don’t miss out next time.

The Greedy Beaver is a wave catcher. However in small surf it is not a great turning board. If you are a longboarder, it might be fun. If you prefer skatey boards in weak surf, this is not for you. If you just want to trim then it is a great board.

I have not ridden in surf over weak waist/chest high so I have not seen it come to life. I have ridden it behind a boat and with speed it becomes more lively. I think this would be an awesome transition board from a longboard or a bigger guy shortboard.

I just sold my 6’2 40 L board (my size- 5’10, 155) Intermediate/advanced surfer. I intentionally got a bigger board than I usually would for something different. I also really do not like longboarding but it gets really tiny in the summer.

I could catch the same waves as the longboarders.

Surfing/Skating was a big part of my life as a teenager in the 90s. As the years progressed I eventually left surfing behind to pursue the more responsible trappings of life (job, education, family, health insurance, 401k, etc.

). However, surfing was in my blood and I always enjoyed and appreciated it from afar. Even something like a windy day on a lake I would find myself checking out the lines and the mini barrels and getting stoked just imagining.

With YouTube I’ve been finding myself so blown away by the progression of surfing. I can’t believe what I’m seeing, and guys like Jamie and Ben bring some much fun and awesomeness to the game. So unfortunately you’re going to have to deal with another old kook out in the lineup because I’m back in the game! I got my 7′ blank fun board a week ago and its f-ing awesome (great float and wave catching ease, while maintaining maneuverability), The board is awesome and the service was as well, zero complaints.

If this is my mid-life crisis, well then bring it on!!!.

An awesome board! Closest thing to a shortboard for a soft-top. It’s easy to get into waves considering the short length and totally shreds! Glad I got all white cause I can leave it in the sun. Black will delaminate in 15 mins if left in direct sun.

I got the 9’0” and this thing is amazing! Catches waves effortlessly. I was debating between the 8’ and the 9’. I called catch surf and their customer service was fantastic and they steered me towards the 9’… which lucky for me the local shop had one.

Very satisfied with my purchase and I’ll be snagging more boards as I progress, for sure!.

This is such an amazing board, I’m not sure where to start. I went with the 5’8, 38L and I am 175lbs, 6’2. I went with FCS Carver quad fin setup and the speed is insane. The board has a ton of surface area everywhere, especially in the nose.

It’s like a longboard nose, on a groveler. Barely any rocker, you can catch knee high waves and better easily, but then you can pump and generate speed effortlessly on it and make sections that a lot of other boards couldn’t.

I’ve ridden this up to chest high and it was awesome, at which point anything bigger really calls for a different board. But, I think 80% of the time, the waves here in NH aren’t that great, so this board becomes the go-to option for anything ankle high-waist high! Turns really nicely and loose w/ the quad fins.

Also I love the crazy psychedelic artwork, very unique board. Will always have this in my quiver.

Overall I think this was a great purchase. This is my second Lib Tech board and I can say that I am happy with little exception. My one concern was that this board came with several cosmetic blemishes which according to the lib tech website would make it a b grade however I paid full price.

Also, the center fin box was extremely tight and I had to file it down slightly to get my fins to properly fit in to the box. Overall I have been happy with my previous Lib Tech purchase so I believe that this one will also stand the test of time.

Not only do these boards perform well but they are extremely durable. I have a puddlefish by libtech that has gone into the rocks several times at Leo Carrillo with little to no damage. Lib Tech makes a great product and the fact that they are making them here in the USA I like the fact that I’m helping support local people.

Love the board and the construction. Ridden it 10+ times since I got it and only has a very minor pressure ding that you probably won’t find unless I point it out. Don’t think I agree with the name ‘quiver killer’.

I’d recommend this board for better days, at the very least 3-4ft. I got the 5’10” (38yo longtime surfer, 6ft, 175lbs) and have been riding it so far in the 5-8ft range around SF and really enjoying it.

The Futures compatible boxes work really well, but it does take some effort to get fins in / out. Feels like the process is getting smoother with use / practice, but most of all I’m glad they offer this option so I can use the fins I’ve bought and gotten used to over the years.

Hoping to travel with it whenever that becomes possible again.

Picked up the job 7 foot log yesterday from the laguna store. Came with fins and some wax. Took it out today in bolsa 2 footers with mild texture faces quick close outs and had a blast. I have been riding an 8’ wavestorm for about a year and just wanted to try something different.

I really don’t like the idea of dinging a 1200 glass board. Just wanted something I could beat up, throw my my beach cruiser. Toss into the sand and not really worry about. So. a foot shorter and a little less volume than the wavestorm.

– I was very surprised how much more maneuverable this board is vs the wavestorm. Was small enough I was able to pump a couple waves to extend my rides yet big enough to make catching waves a breeze.

Super happy with the purchase.

Just got my 8’0″ plank on Friday. Took it to the Horace Caldwell pier in Port Aransas Saturday. There was a 5′ northeast swell working that was mostly moving sideways down the beach. It was flat at the jetty, but waist high and cross offshore near the pier.

My first impression while paddling was that it was tippy side to side, and that it didn’t cover ground very quickly. I missed the first couple of waves and then finally caught one. The board felt like it was slow, dragging, and not really getting all the way into the wave.

On my third wave I was high in the foam and felt like I wasn’t going to be able to drop in. I shuffled toward the nose and the board slowly gained speed and then took off, speeding across the the foam and squirting me out on the face.

I was getting the hang of it! I figured out that I needed to be farther forward to both catch the wave and to drop in. A small shift in my paddling position forward and all of a sudden I caught everything I paddled for.

This shift also sped up my paddling getting back to the line up. Centering my stance forward of the center of the board I was able to generate a lot of speed. Several waves that looked like they were going to close out, I kept making sections and staying ahead of the foam.

Late in the session i started easing toward the nose at the end of my rides when the wave was petering out in the gut outside the shore break. As soon as I started riding near the nose I started connecting thru the gut and shooting little knee high barrels right up to the sand.

My friends on the beach all remarked on how much speed I was getting and my extended tip time on the inside. My session went from some initial disappointment to all around stoke. I can’t wait to get it in the water again and apply my new found techniques right from the start.

I couldn’t be happier with this board. It arrived in perfect shape. The overall quality of the construction seems outstanding, with very high quality. manufacturing standards. This brings my catchsurf quiver to 3 boards.

I have 2 planks (9′ and 8′). The wife got a 7′ white Blank series the same day I got the board in this review. Super Stoked!.

Dude! I cannot say enough good things about this board and also this company! Super fun to catch any kind of wave at any beach. Always a fun and smooth ride on catch surfs boards. Would highly recommend the LOG to anybody learning to surf or looking for a more forgiving board.

I finally know why JOB is psyching all the time! This board is a blast. Was riding an 8′ PU fish/funboard for the past 12 seasons and love the Log. It’s lighter than you would think and more responsive than one may assume on a board with fat rails.

We got it for my wife just as the season ended, but shes amped to get back on it when the water warmRead more about review stating 8′ Log – Electric Lemon(ade)s in the NY/NJ area. Or she gets a proper winter suit.

Until then I get to shred it. I am on the bigger side 6’4″ 220+ lbs and was riding it in ankle to knee high surf no problem. Perfect summer board and apparently North Shore ready judging by some of the barrels people get on these things.

The fin I received still had unsanded edges which were lethally sharp. I recommend anyone buying this fin be sure and take sand paper to the leading edge the tip and the following edge in order to avoid exposing yourself and others to nasty wounds.

(Don’t ask me how I know. ) I sanded mine down till it felt soft. This did not change the looks or performance but did probably save the nube who dropped in on me and then shot his board across my path yesterday from having a huge gash in his rail, though he suffered a medium ding instead.

If it had hit one of his body parts the way it came, there would have been blood all over as opposed to a bruise. Otherwise the fin is perfect! As for performance, compared to a more standard fin shape, the board prefers straighter lines with this fin, stiffer to turn but it still turns well when you really lean into it and it seems to allow me to catch waves earlier and to catch smaller waves than I did with a narrower fin design.

I was very pleased with this fin. I couldn’t wait to try it on my 10. 5 SUP and immediately put it on and headed out to the lake. I met extremely heavy chop but credit this fin for a super stable ride! Worked well with wake rides too.

I hope to try it on my 9. 8 Surf Sup asap. I had been using a 9″ fiberglass with less of a rake.
