18 Best Wood Grain Filler (2022 Updated)

My floor installer left scratches, dents and nail holes in the woodwork. To repair these, I tried Minwax Color-Matched Wood Filler. The first store I went to, didn’t have the color I needed so I bought two tubes and tried to mix them.

I was not successful. The stain I have on my woodwork is Honey Oak. I found Golden Oak at another store. It is real easy to put on. No sanding is needed, just a damp cloth after it sits for a few minutes.

Because I have an old stain, it didn’t match very well. It looked ok on small nail holes, but the difference really showed up on dents and scratches. Because I like the ease of this product, I will get the stainable wood filler for the remaining repairs.

It will add a step but will match better with my existing wood.

We got this product to fill in some chips and just to have around the house. We picked the darkest color walnut, however there wasn’t a lot of options. That’s the reason I’m docking it one star. The color availability was so slim.

There are a million different color options for stain and wood and paint I wish there was more variety because this color is a little different than the color we were trying to match. It does do it’s job though.

Filled easily and dried pretty fast. I did appreciate the no sanding aspect. Easy enough to just wipe the excess product off and let it do it’s magic. I highly recommend this product if you can find a matching color!.

This handy tube makes it easy to fill nail holes, cracks or imperfections on projects whether new or a repair. It goes on easily, has minimal shrinking and can be smoothed easily with a damp cloth or paper towel.

This avoids a lot of hassle and mess with sanding. It dries pretty fast depending on depth and is easy to clean up. I almost always paint or stain and color match and adhesion is great. The twist on cap is easy to clean off, is air tight, and extends product life.

No issues with dried up compound after initial use.

I was a painter for many years and when I needed to fill wood i would use Bondo which was god it was hard to work with as it hardened quicly and was hard to clean up. Famowood is a latex product and hardened great.

Easily sandable and easy cleanup. The gallon size is a great value and about a third of the price of other wood fills.

I used this product on my floors. I filled in all the cracks. It was easy and sanded well. then I stained my floor and it looks like an old fashion floor. I loved this product. The company was easy to work with and got the product out right away.

Good filler, easy to apply and the consistency is perfect. It shrink a little after drying which mean you should not scrape perfectly flat when applying or put a second coat (if you can afford the time).

Overfill a little and sand flush when dry. No smell like plastic wood.

I’M NOT IMPRESSED. I BOUGHT THIS TO FILL IN THE GRAIN OF A MAHOGANY BOAT PRIOR TO CLEAR COATING. I HAVE NOW APPLIED THREE COATS OF AQUA COAT, AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS GOING TO TAKE ANOTHER TWO OR THREE COAT BEFORE IT IS LEVEL.

I COULD HAVE DONE THE WHOLE JOB WITH FEWER COATS OF THE CETOL CLEAR COAT I PLAN TO USE AND WOULD BE DONE AT THIS POINT WITH ABOUT THE SAME RESULTS. IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO USE THIS WITH A WOOD THAT HAS A FINER GRAIN, IT MAY WORK OK, BUT IN THAT CASE, YOU PROBABLY DON’T NEED A GRAIN FILLER AT ALL.

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND JUST PUT ON ANOTHER COAT OR TWO OF YOUR FINISH COATING AND YOU’LL GET THE RESULT YOU WANTED WITHOUT THE EXTRA EXPENSE, WORK AND AGGRAVATION. I SHOULD MENTION THAT I FOUND TIMBERMATE TO BE A VERY GOOD GRAIN FILLER BUT THEY DON’T HAVE IT IN CLEAR.

IT WILL FILL THE GRAIN IN ONE OR TWO COATS, BUT IT WAS NOT SUITABLE FOR MY PURPOSES.

I’ve used this filler for years and it excels in specific applications. From large patches to scratch fixes this filler is durable under tough conditions. Simple scratch and gouge fixes are easy to do but you need to be very careful with the amount you prepare.

The hardener is supposed to be added at a ratio of 16:1 but it is hard to gauge. Instead, I use it sparingly because the worst thing that happens is that it takes longer to set. When you use too much, you don’t have a lot of working time and pressing it into scratches can leave a chunky texture at the end of the window.

When you sand it, you want the surface smooth but not too smooth. A slightly textured surface holds onto finishes better. It also makes blending easier. If you do large fixes, it is better to fill the bulk of the voids with wood and then add the hardener as the topping that you can sculpt.

Filling a large void with filler only takes too long and the repair is likely to crack. You should also get the liquid wood hardener to treat the surface you are tying into. Sealing up the grain will minimize the seasonal swelling (especially for exterior repairs) if the wood doesn’t swell, the patch will be very durable.

I’ve used this filler for molding repairs on a historic building and as crack filler in woodwork. It doesn’t really like stain on the first coat but if you apply it heavy, you can get it to look reasonably well.

Most of my applications are using paint or a solid stain as a coating. Once sealed, this repair will last. I have exterior repairs that have made it through multiple seasons without issue. Great product and workable during and after it sets.

Clean up right away because this will stick to tools like glue and need to be sanded off. Be aware of your breathing, the smell is strong and the dust from sanding should not be inhaled.

I like how the container was designed to keep the wood hardener packet in the plastic lid. Now I will be able to find the hardener when I need it for the next project. I used this wood filler to fix small chips, holes, and dents in wood cabinets, trim and doors.

I have used other wood filler products but this one was much better. The filler works quickly and stays in place easily. I was surprised at how quickly it hardens so next time I will use a little product and then mix more for each chip that I need to fix.

And I wasn’t able to get off the excess product as it hardens quickly. So I will need to sand it off before I paint. Also recommend keeping container outside as the fumes are very strong.

I own a handyman business and was actually looking on the site to get a spec on how cold the temp can be to use this on an exterior door jam repair. I saw some bad reviews and decided to do one myself.

I have had great success with this product in numerous situations. If you don’t mix it right, it will not work. I had to get used to it and once I did, it has been a life saver for many of my customers.

I even used it to repair brick that had a light base screwed into it that spawled and broke the brick. I used a hearty serving if Minwax HP wood filler and let it dry overnight. I was able to drill and screw new screws into it and it still is solid 4 years later.

Easy to use. You don’t need a big amount to fill up a crack. once the job is done, the clean up is simple and neat. The result is quite satisfactory: the imperfection was gone and no trace was visible.

Color advertised was not what the product produces. Dries and falls out.

This wood filler does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It fills wood and it matches color pretty well. I used the white wood color and so far have used it to fill nail holes on moulding and doors. The filler does not shrink and dries fast.

I just use my finger to press it into the hole or gap and it’s as simple as that. I come back in a few hours with a light sand and then it’s ready for paint. The easy squeeze bottle is much nicer than some other putty’s and fillers that come in a can and need to be used with a putty knife.

This is simple and quick!.

Thought this would fix the issue of a south facing front door with a crack, and Ive tried several brands like DAP. After two days post application, and then paint, it proceeded to crack, again. At this point with $35.

00 invested I think the best solution is simple clear silicon paintable caulking=$6. 00 Ill let you know if it works.

I would give this a 10 star rating if it was possible. One downside is the container is not airtight, and it will dry and harden over time. You can check it every few weeks, and add some water, OR, once opened, I transfer the contents into an airtight jar which keeps it moist and ready to use, when youre ready to use it.

This product does everything it claims, and then some. My workshop wouldnt be without it!! Jeff, Vermont.

Today I ran out of my old container of Elmer’s Wood Filler then had to go to the store to buy more. I saw this at Ace Hardware and thought it would be like the old one. normal and junk. When I used this it was like Wow! They made it better! I was impressed by the gray color and thick texture.

The old one was white and I don’t remember it being thick. Buy this and you will not be disappointed. I wish they would sell it at Lowes or Home Depot.

It is quite similar to the original that I was used for so many years. I just started trying this version which is supposed to be stronger. I don’t know why they changed it so suddenly. This new one looks the same.

These are the best over-all and Rockler has them is various tints. Getting a perfect match is never possible and the filled areas will stain differently from the surrounding wood surface. The filler can dry out quickly but can be reconditioned by adding small amounts (5 ml) of acetone and/or methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK), which I’ve only found at Sherwin-Williams Paint stores.

One method of use is to apply the filler on larger defects, then apply some CA glue (super glue) on top of it and drop some sanding dust from that type of wood on top of the wet glue. It quickly becomes extremely hard and will tend to stain darker than just the filler alone.

Heat and humidity help the hardening process.

Mixes easily, spreads pretty well. Well advised to heed the warning on not mixing too much in one go. You have only a minute or two to work the mixture. Sets rock hard in no time. Not too bad to sand.

Only downside is the fumes. Had to leave the room with the windows thrown open for the rest of the day!.

This product filled holes in my floorboard , it was also a similar color to the sanded down floorboard in my room. The mixing of the two components could easily be done in the inner lid of the product which is handy and there is a small spatula like piece of plastic provided to do this.

I have used this product for several years in a furniture environment. I know it says it is stainable but take no notice, it will not take wood stain and remain the colour that you have stained it. What we tend to do is buy this lighter colour and add some brown umber to the desired colour required, this way it will keep its colour and not fade.

Otherwise its a great filler to fix larger holes or defects in wood. It is not unique to this particular brand it is my experience the same with all brands, mixing umber to the required colour gives lasting results.

I read the reviews about the Minwax Color Changing Wood Filler before I used it. There were both happy and unhappy customers. Those who were unhappy pretty well had one thing in common. It sounded like they used it to fill in major defaults like perhaps a corner, or a large defect in the wood.

It says right on the product that it is for use with “small” defects in unfinished wood. I used it to fill nail holes after removing curtain hardware from our wood molding. It was easy enough to use.

I waited for the color to change before lightly sanding. We applied a coat of enamel paint to match the rest of the molding and had no problems. If you are using stain, there were some good tips posted by the manufacturer on how to avoid having problems.

I would use this again.

I received my Minwax Color Changing Wood filler to sample and write my honest review. I have never heard of this Minwax Color Changing Wood Filler until it was sent to me. I have a very nice tv stand that had pretty noticeable holes from me drilling too deep with the screws.

I never fixed it because I didn’t know there was a color changing wood filler that preforms miracles. All I used was a small amount because the consistency was very smooth and thick. The color change lets you know when it’s dry.

I sanded the holes until smooth, then I used one of those wood matching markers. You could not even tell that there were holes there. This will be one of my go to wood fillers.

I used this product to fill holes in my light oak finished kitchen cabinets. I thought this would be better than using color putty since it’d have a harder finish. I just mixed a small batch and it did harden quickly.

After sanding with medium then fine sandpaper I wiped on a coat of stain. I could still see the filler after two coats of stain. So, I used a small paint brush and touched up the holes with stain three more times.

The filler still shows a bit. This product may stain better than some wood fillers but it does not completely match the stain and hide the repair.

I just remodeled two bathrooms in my home and am handling the prep and paint myself. I wanted something less toxic than what is purchased in the big hardware stores. This worked really well. Filled easily and was easy to sand.

Painted nicely too. It is a powder you mix with water until you got a putty consistency. The great part is that as you are filling nail holes and cracks, if it begins to get too hard in your mixing container just add a bit more water to get back to the desired consistency.

No waste! I couldn’t detect any smell either.
