20 Best Wooden Dog House (2022 Updated)

Bought this dog house for our cats, actually. We needed a place to house our litter boxes outside in our “catio” as there just isn’t a good place inside for them and we want our cats to be able to go outside without predators getting them.

We saw thia dog house with the hinged lid and thought, “Perfect! The litter boxes will be protected from the weather and we’ll be able to easily open the lid to clean them. ” The hinged lid, however, proved to be the hardest part to assemble.

All we needed to do was screw one piece of with with hinges already attached to the lid, then slip it into place. Sounds simple enough, right? Nope. No matter what my husband did, even doing it as the very vague instructions told him to, the lid wouldn’t open.

We tried so many different positions. We flipped that piece of wood around, the lid, nothing. Finally, as we were looking at it, holding the lid in the spot it was supposed to go in relation to piece of wood.

the hinges were screwed in the WRONG SPOT on the piece of wood. The wood that came with the hinges already screwed on in the box. So someone at the factory put the hinges in the wrong spot. So we had to UNSCREW the hinges from the wood, and screw into the spot they were supposed to go.

The lid opened just fine after that and we were able to finish assembling. But it was certainly not easy. Aside from that, it seems to be an ok dog house. Hoping it doesn’t prove to be overall disappointing.

I have a blind, rescue hound dog that marks everything and has to stay outside. He has free access to a covered porch that we refer to as his apartment. Keeping him warm is a priority. We bought the dog house for inside his apartment as a place to keep him cozy during the winter.

We chose the Large size for him, he weighs about 40 lbs. It was easy to put together and he fits comfortably. I’m not sure how it would hold up outside with constant exposure to weather or with a larger more active dog.

It took us a little bit to teach him how to use it but it has really turned out great for my boy. I love that the top opens up so we can clean it easily.

Overall the doghouse is decent. I did have to use some longer/stronger screws in spots to secure the roof better. Also shored up the walls and base with longer screws.

Extremely easy to set up and very attractive. The cedar smell is typically pleasant for humans, but not animals. I have been airing it out for 4 days. In addition, the floor is not square and there is a gap at the front edge.

I purchased the medium-sized house and will be using it for outdoor cats. It will be protected from the elements, and I am confident it will be quite usable. I am able to support the floor from below, therefore I’m not concerned that it will fall.

Considering the price and the small adjustments that were necessary, I would purchase it again. I doubt I would use it for an active dog or one with a tendency to chew.

Recently purchased for a litter enclosure. It is so beautiful! Also utilitarian and good quality. It is better than the marketed litter enclosures because (unlike those enclosures) it is made of real wood, it is water repellent if there are accidents, it won’t warp if I sanitize it with liquid cleaners, it gives more space for same price, it opens from the top for easy cleanup, it folds easily out of the way if need be for cleaning area, moving, etc.

Because I put it on the front porch/catio, it hasn’t been put to the test for withstanding a lot of moisture, and I can’t speak as to that. But it is doing well with cleaner wipe downs. I took off one star because the asphalt roof has tiny particles falling off when I open it up.

but my cats may be clawing it when unattended. Also it does not seem like it would be very warm for dog unless walls & floor were padded. For my purposes, I love it & with some more time putting it to the test, am considering buying 1 or 2 more.

Easy to assemble but was disappointed the wood on the front board was splintered. The lid partially covered the crack, but for the price point there shouldn’t be any defects.

Easy to put together, the floor boards fit a little lose but nothing straw doesn’t fix.

Sturdy, the top and bottom snap together. Lightweight enough to be moveable but heavy enough to stay put. I purchased this size to accommodate 4 feral cats in preparation for any cold weather. I filled the interior with straw from Tractor Supply also.

At least one kitty has begun using the house If the weather turns frigid as it did in my area Feb 2021, I can always reduce the size of the opening and add additional cover (waterproof tarp) over the exterior.

I’m hoping this house will provide dry, warm shelter for the cats if needed.

I bought this for a little added shelter for my two old barn cats. They sleep in an old rabbit cage (their choice) and it isn’t really a warm area for them. I put the small dog house inside the cage, put some straw in it, and they are very toasty warm and happy now.

It just fit inside like it was made for that area. The only thing I didn’t care for is that it is supposed to snap together – it didn’t. The long sides on top and bottom were warped from storage or shipping, and the small tabs that were supposed to click into place couldn’t even reach the intended place.

So, I got my drill, drilled a couple of holes in top and bottom sides on each side, and fastened them together with zip ties. All set now, but if I hadn’t had a drill, I don’t know how I’d of gotten it together other than taping it or something.

Purchased this for my German Shepherds. Just something to go in if the weather changes and I haven’t been able to bring them in. The house itself is strong, molded plastic. My 90 lb. male fits in this and the puppy can get in there with him.

I am disappointed that it doesn’t have a way to secure the top to the bottom, or I didn’t see one. No instructions enclosed. Came in cardboard box. The opening is quite big and if used for strictly outdoor dog would need a flap.

Probably not a good option for very cold winter weather but great for temporary use or mild cold weather. I put cedar in it.

So far, we love it. One day my dog will use it, but its a strudy piece that is nicely constructed and looks really great. My pointer has taken to the asphalt roof when its chillier outside because it heats up in the sun.

It’s just a nice looking dog house. Minus one star because is not for heavy dogs, minus another star because is a cheap material. I bought XL for my cane corso puppy 6 months old weight 95 pounds and she broke it the first week using it, when she sleeps she move around a lot so the house was losing screw and the floor broke in parts.

If where you leave is cold weather you may have to put insulation. If you have medium dog NO more than 50 pounds I think XL IS GOOD for your dog.

#ReceivedFreeProduct The size of the actual housing space is smaller than I expected. The roof of the house has a long overhang which is great for providing shade and keeping out the rain. The dimensions of the house are based on the size of the roof and not the actual housing area.

So the area for your pet to lie in is a lots smaller than the dimensions given. Our dog has never had a dog house with windows in it. I think he really enjoys this as he doesn’t have to have his head right at the door to be able to see what is going on in his yard.

He can just lie back and enjoy the view. The house was very easy to put together. It had sort of like predrilled pockets and dowels sticking out that fit together to help to line things up. Then you just screwed it together.

Went together very quickly. We were missing one screw for the roof, but luckily my husband had one that was almost identical that we could use. Nice looking dog house once it’s all together.

Roof is pretty long that provides shade and stops the rain from coming inside the house. Instruction were easy to follow and we did not have any problem putting it together. I really love it that it’s not heavy if you need to move it.

It’s stylish light dog house. Love the window next to entryway. I think my dog is really happy with house too.

It needs a Rubber casket between the screws and roof which it doesn’t come with. I thought it came with insulation but I overlooked that aspect. Now i have to get it before winter. Another extra expense.

Overall, it’s ok. And of course, convenient.

This is a very nice and sturdy dog house, also big enough for my German Shepherd, with plenty of room inside.

I bought the small house for a semi-feral cat that lives on my porch during the winter. It went together incredibly easy. The wood is lightweight making the house easy to move. The opening is too large for a cat and I intend to use the wood slats that make the bottom of the house to create a smaller door entrance.

It’s an easy customization. I will use a piece of solid plywood for the replacement flooring by making a template from the slats for size and cutting the plywood to fit the house. The flooring as is has gaps inbetween the wood boards, like slats, allowing wind to blow right under and in.

Not really a problem, as I’d planned from the get-go to have to make several upgrades anyway. I also plan to put the foam insulating panels into this house and line the inside of the roof as well to create a completely windproof and cozy house.

All in all, this house is just what I wanted and saves me the work of building a house from scratch. Love the way the top opens for easy cleaning and access, also love the feet. With free shipping and a discount coupon code, the price was excellent.

If it is going to be out in the actual elements (unless you live in a very moderate climate) as opposed to a porch, it is a good idea to replace the supplied screws with galvanized or decking screws of the appropriate size to replace the cheaper ones in the kit.

Do not use larger than the size supplied, as the wood is softer and will split if you use a screw too large. If your dog/cat is going to be outside during the winter in this house, DO upgrade it. change out the flooring to a solid plywood floor, or if you cannot do this, use a high quality thick plastic to staple to the underside of the floor securely (so it won’t flap) or some type of vinyl liner on the inside ) to keep all cold air out.

Get a plastic flap door, too. It’s a great house for the price and with a few tweaks and a little preventative maintenance (additional staining), it’s a deal that your pet will appreciate. I put it on my porch with a cheaper microfiber blanket and the cat was in it within an hour.

The next morning, she was sitting on the roof, enjoying the elevated surface and view from her new home. I would buy this product again, and might very soon, to replace another feral/stray cat house on my property.

Easy to assemble, very well made. It’s just arrived and so far I’m very pleased. I was able to put two wooden nesting boxes in and still have just enough room for the chickens to get in. The floor is removable and comes in 3 pieces for easy cleaning.

The dog house was shipped using the same box it would have been in had we picked it up from the store. the corners of the box were reinforced with corner guards and the entire box wrapped with nylon straps.

Very secure and easy to see if it had been damaged in transit (ours hadn’t). Easily assembled by myself, needed no assistance. Once assembeld, my dogs, who are a bit skittish about using houses (we tried once before with one of those soft houses) went right to it.

They have yet to actually USE it but that is only because we are acclimating them to it slowly and aren’t trying to push it on them. We have two chihuahuas and will be using the house indoors. Not certain how it would hold up to severe winter weather, but I can report that the house is sturdily constructed and the roof is amazing (the shingle surface of the dog house is in better condition than the asphalt shingles on my house!!) I would highly recommend this house – and I can also report that I searched high and low to get a good deal and found the best deal right here at Petco.

Definitely a good purchase and value for the dollar. The house is made of materials that are solid but not bulky. The surface can be repainted if you want to get creative. The design does well to deflect rain and we put it to the test with the recent downpours we had.

The temperature inside the house remains cool even in hot temps, I know because I crawled inside when I tried introducing my pooches to their new outdoor living space. The only downside is that my dogs are older and never had an outdoor shelter before, so I am not succeeding at getting them to use it.

I am thinking of maybe adding a (homemade deck) and in-ground (baby) pool to see if maybe that will entice them to use it. I have tried treats, a fluffy bed, a water bowl, and now resorted to wall to wall carpeting.

So far, nothing has worked. But, it is definitely a very nice dog house that was very easy to assemble and not to heavy to move around. I placed it on slim cylinder blocks to keep the house from making direct contact with the wet ground because we get four seasons here and often we get heavy snow and rain fall.

My hope is the blocks will extend the life of their home and prevent water damage or rot. I love that the roof opens like a chest – makes it easy to access the inside.

I received it very fast. The instructions are pretty easy to follow. I assembled it by myself in about one hour. The roof installation was the most challenging. Make sure you center it or it won’t close right and catch one corner.

Other than that pretty easy. The house is well made. The roof material is little messy during installation but it is great and waterproof and is not a bother after the roof is installed. I recommend it!.

This house was very easy to assemble with just a screwdriver and pair of pliers. It seems to be pretty well built but I am not sure how well it would stand up to the weather. We are putting ours under a covered patio so it is not a issue but if I was putting it out in the weather I would probably put a good paint or sealer on it first.

The hinged roof makes getting inside and keeping it clean very nice and our husky loves it. It’s nice and big with plenty of room for him to stretch out.

I bought this as a supplemental shelter for my backyard hens during rainy weather; they were into it within mere moments after I put it together and placed it in their pen! The quality is outstanding; very well designed! And it is very easy to put together; all I needed was a Philips screwdriver.

The roof of the house has a great non-slip surface to it, so the birds can hop up onto it and not slip around. I know it was marketed as a dog house, but it’s great for small backyard poultry flocks, too!.

Very nice cedar dog house that we use for our 2 Khaki Campbell ducks. It went together easily and works perfectly for our urban homestead!

This is the third animal house I have bought from Trixie. They have all been for rehab wildlife, so they are likely to get harder usage than if a domestic was housed in them. In every case, I am amazed at how well made the habitats are.

This larger kennel is beautiful. All four feet can be easily adjusted to level it. The only reason I gave “easy of assembly” a 4 rather than a 5 is because it’s hard to tell from the directions that you screw the lid into the BACK of the base and sliding the top into the hinges is tough to do with only one person.

But it’s not that hard and once you get it into place the lid works beautifully and is very solid.

My wife put this together and absolutely did it with ease. The only thing I would recommend is to coat it with a waterproofing clear coat. While it hasn’t happen, I worry the wood will not last as long as if I had done that.

I use this for a miniature pig and a rooster who both share the house at night and the rooster sits on top during the day. We can wash off the top easily since it came with a roof mat, up there.

Absolutely love these crates! I bought two for my two collie mixes. They look very elegant and only took about an hour each to assemble by myself. Instructions are easy to follow but I recommend following the other reviewer’s advice about assembling the top first instead of the bottom (unless you are a tiny person that can reach inside the crate to screw in the final screws).

True to dimensions. The mattress that comes with the crate is okay. Very soft material but too firm in my opinion. We already have better pillows so we just replaced them. I wouldn’t recommend these crates if your dog is kennel training or has limited crate training.

This is definitely a crate for dogs who are content in their crate. It’s not that they’re flimsy, but I could see a dog doing some damage easily to it.

No I am not a bot writing this. I had another brand of “furniture dog crate” and it was so aweful. The latch constantly fell off and the wood kept moving out of the slots. So with as much problems I had with that one I was skeptical to buy any more furniture crates.

My husband put this one together ( took about 30 mins) and it was so sturdy and beautiful! ( the pad inside is alittle to big but it doesn’t cause a problem) we are honestly so happy with this purchase.

It would be good for a small dog or a medium size dog. Up to 65 pounds I would say. If your really wanting to not spend a fortune and want good quality definitely get this crate :).

Bought this for the feral cats I feed. The directions suck so look on the box it will help. We put it together within 15 minutes and I will say I like it. I also bought a self warming pad to put inside for the cold.

It Wil fit 2 cats comfortably. Would recommend this house. Some have made the comments about the floor. If you put all the sides together when you try to put the floor in Angel it Down from that opening in the front and you will be just fine putting it in there perfectly.

The second wood on the inside opening is what people are getting stuck on trying to get the flooring in.

My wife wanted a small house for our Sulcata Tortoise. One requirement was an ad or at least 12 in wide so the tortoise could fit through. although the tractor supply ad for this doghouse says door is 9 in wide I check the manufacturer’s website and they said it was 13 in wide.

I emailed the manufacturer and they responded very quickly that in fact yes the door was 13 in wide. the assembly was very easy I had it put together and ready to place in the orchard for the tortoise in 20 minutes.

The only thing left to do was to fabricate a door for the outside to keep the raccoons out which I was able to make out of half inch plywood and a couple of hinges and a hasp lock. Our tortoise whose name is Mo learn to go in and out of the house the very first day he loves it out there he’s got shelter security and a nice soft straw bed to live in.

Nice looking, roomy, easy to assemble. I have some concerns about its long-term sturdiness, particularly involving the tiny screws attaching the roof braces. I’m having difficulty purchasing the optional door and insulation add-ons that were advertised to be available.

I bought the XL and hoped it would be sturdy. It was broken. Plumstruck shipped it in just the product box, without protection as mentioned in another review. The wood was splintering and falling apart just by touching it.

There is no was no way it would have held my 68 lb German Shepard. I read all the reviews (the majority of which are now missing) and thought for some reason I would be luckier than the other buyers and receive it intact.

1 review mentioned the poor shipping and advised against buying anything from Plumstruck. I am sending it back without asking for a replacement. If I have any problems receiving a refund, I will write another review.

I will buy from another manufacturer and avoid Plumstruck connected to anything.

The dog house is so cute! It is a true to size. The large fits my german shepherd great. I love that it looks like wood but is made of PVC. Which makes it water proof. The door has a shade on it to reflect sun to keep it a little cooler.
