20 Best Wooden Train Sets (2022 Updated)

This is the first toy my 2 year old has owned that he is actually still playing with! I love it because it is compact and doesn’t rake up much space. He can rearrange the tracks on his own and make them linear or in a circle.

And you can buy additional trains for it if you choose.

Bought this for my 18 monthold grandson for a Thanksgiving treat. He has never stopped playing with it. He so loves to sy, “choo choo” and take the train around the track. When he gets a bit older I definitely will purchase a bigger train track set to add to this one.

i have this set up on a table where my grandkids play. Everyone plays with this. Everyone adds to the center of the track. They add toys from other games. It engages their imagination.

This is a lovely set built to the usual Scandinavian standards of excellence. Though the track layout is a bit limited without additional pieces, there is a lot on offer with both livestock and feed wagons.

The barn has a wonderful magnetic crane with space underneath for animals. Unlike most toy signposts, the one supplied is made of rubber so is a damn sight more durable than most. Also, unlike many wooden engines three days, the locomotive has a front coupling which allows it to shunt and pull from the rear of the train.

A lovely item.

A perfect complement to the bigger Bauernhof set. The farm’s great with the side walls in wood and the magnet thingy works just fine. The loco, the tractor and the cow are all in wood and look fantastic.

The warning sign is in very flexible yet solid plastic. There could be more than just 2 fences, maybe a tree or two, but overall a great set.

Bought this item as a gift for my small nephew. He was over the moon with it and happily played for hours, giving us adults lots of time to catch up. It is a well designed toy giving lots of scope for a child to be creative and imaginative.

I will certainly buy more add ons over the next few years.

What a precious toy!! This was exactly what I hoped for as a gift to my 4 year old. My 6 year old daughter also wants her turn. It is every bit as cute as the picture and description. It has a couple of parts that require assembly, but my 12 year old son actually handled that for us.

I would buy this again.

I am Nanna and I have purchased this for my granddaughter’s 6th birthday. I was delighted to have found this lovely girly train set and also the accessories to go with it which are also just lovely. I’ve had a quick peek and from what I’ve seen so far the pieces are well made, beautiful colours and ample to start off with.

I am just as excited as I am sure she will be. However shop around as prices do vary a lot.

Great train set. My son had Brio and I remember him using it all the time. Bought this for my grandson for Christmas and he loves it!! He’s not yet 3, so I know he’ll get many more wonderful years out of it.

Terrific fun for our just 2 year old grandson. Very well made and durable. Assembling the track and moving the trains fascinates him. It can be difficult to pull him away from it. Meanwhile, it is teaching him dexterity, creativity, and many of the principles of how things work.

Exactly what we needed. One tiny piece of track was missing but it didnt matter. A very happy boy here.

Sent to my granddaughter age 2 years 9 months. She loves trains and all things fairy/ princess so thought this trainset would suit. She has strong views on what she likes. Was able to see her opening it on FaceTime and she was totally delighted.

My 3.5 year old loves this set. Great quality and fits with his other train sets. He loves the colourful trains and the bridge and doesn’t need any help putting it together.

It is a good quality product & perfect for my 2 year old granddaughter. It has a good mix of train track, and a bridge, and also a variety of signals, buildings, etc. The fact that it’s pink as well makes it great for girls.

Always the best. Good old fashioned wooden train set for grandson. He loves it. Also a little chewable. His father did request this as he wanted to play trains as well.

Thought I’d never write/say that a Melissa and Doug toy is. awful. But here goes. Our family has ALWAYS loved their line of toys. This is a surprising out-lier. I bought this for Christmas for 30-month-old twins.

They weren’t interested in it but for a few minutes. There are only 3 train cars, that fourth yellow one is just a car, that little kids keep trying to attach to the train. The train cars have magnetic links to each other, that is, if the child isn’t completely frustrated by getting them to link together.

They have to turn each one the right way for them to magnetize, other wise they won’t link at all. There is no actual track. just shallow grooves cut in the play surface and the trains will actually follow them for maybe two-three inches.

Wooden trees? too lightweight to stay put as is the bridge and the very thin “tunnel” that won’t stand unless you push it down on its “props. “.

Normally love Melissa & Doug’s products. However, this train set did not live up to expectations. Got this for my 3-year-old grandson and it just does not work properly. The house, train station, bridge, etc.

do not stay in place. it is hard to find appropriate place to put them and then you have to place them very carefully so they do not go on the tracks. and they still get moved every time he runs the train on the track.

And, speaking of the train. it does not stay on the tracks so is very frustrating for a toddler. All in all, I am very disappointed. This set is a cute idea, but it does not function properly.

We’ll made quality toy! We also have the Melissa and Doug car carrier and those wooden cars run on the train track too. The wheels are perfectly spaced. So I would gather that all of the Melissa and Doug cars are interchangeable with other Melissa and Doug sets!!!.

I had been looking for a brio train set for my sons first birthday but was dismayed to find that most other retailers had sold out. I have a strong preference for wooden toys and have always purchased brio items for my son as I find them to be of a particularly high quality and long lasting.

This train set exceeded my expectations. Although my little one is a little bit too young to play with it as intended he still nonetheless enjoys playing with the trains and it will certainly be a toy that will become more used as he continues to grow.

This is really well-made and well thought out as a very first starter kit for wooden trains. The engine and carriage are tactile and durable and my 2 year old has already figured out how to construct the whole thing.

It has lots of little features, like the magnetic train connections and wobbly bridge, that help teach child about various new concepts. I do wish there were a few more rail pieces included so we could create a larger track, but that can come later!.

This was bought for my granddaughters 1st birthday she absolutely loves it she uses it with the wooden farm toys also bought from JL. Due to shielding this was sent directly too her watching her open via FaceTime was a delight.

I was pretty disappointed with this product. Melissa and Doug usually make great products. I got this for my son who is two. He loves trains and was super excited. I also got him another pack of trains by Melissa and Doug to add to the two that come with this kit.

When he connects the trains and tries to pull them one or more always fall over. I thought maybe this would not be problem if it was on the track but even on the track the trains tip over easily unless you pull them in a direct straight line.

Any curve causes a train line of more than three cars to fall over. My son gets frustrated because he loves the train and wants to connect them and play but can’t really do much with it because it falls over.

I think the problem might be that the trains are narrow on the base and too tall.

Exactly what I was looking for. The 5 year old grandchild enjoys putting the tracks together while the 2 year old plays more with the cars. Both kids have no problem putting the track pieces together.

I did purchase extra train pieces and extra track pieces so that there were more construction possibilities Quality product!.

This just arrived today as a birthday present for my almost 4 y/o son. well Momma was excited about this and we opened it early and had a blast! While it is on the lower end price wise compared to other fancier tables, the quality is great, colors are so vivid, seems to be very well made, not too big not too small, very cute little wooden street signs, vehicles, ect.

and the birthday boy loves it! And so do I! Years of fun will be had and happy memories will be made while playing with this great train set. Also, it arrived super fast!.

This table was easy to assemble in about 20 minutes by myself. The table is sturdy and made of quality wood as well as the train track and all the wooden pieces that came with it. No pieces were mismatched and everything lined up perfectly, my son loved it.

This is a smaller table but perfect for my two-year-old son. I am going to glue all the pieces together with wood glue but it really doesn’t need it, my son just plays rough. Very impressed with the quality for the price and very happy with this purchase.

Purchased for my grandson 2nd birthday. IT WAS A HIT. His parents say he Is obsessed with it. Its also something he will grow into over the next couple of years. Actually setting up the tracks himself, etc.

Shopping at Mastermind is the best. Click and collect is easy, the store clerk knew I was in a rush and wrapped it for me-even asking which paper wrapping I’d prefer. I know shopping around can save you a little bit of money sometimes, but this saves you time and a headache which is more valuable.

Plus, they don’t sell garbage toys so you’ll find something I child can use for longer than a month.

This is a great starter set for a child new to train toys. The trains and tracks are easy to handle and there are not too many pieces to overwhelm. All parts are well made and very good quality. We look forward to adding more trains and features in future to grow the set as the child develops.

My 2 1/2 yr. old grandson loves it. We’re keeping it at our house on a small 48”x24” multi- position table. It fits great & is easily broken down when he’s not here. Only reason I didn’t rate it a five is because one of the flip open top doors came off the train.

I was sitting right by my grandson & all he did was open it. Grandpa popped it back in, but we’ll see if it stays. If not I want a replacement for that car. The baby’s Brio trains stay on the wooden tracks better and are sturdier than others.

I purchased this for our granddaughter. It has so many different things to play with other than the train that it keeps her entertained every time she comes over. Pieces fit together well and stay together.

I bought this train set for my 3 year old son. He loves it! My 9 year old daughter even loves to play with it. The set is very nicely made. Nice, sturdy pieces. I’m very pleased with the amount and variety of pieces.

My son especially likes the crane and helicopter. I can see him getting years of play out of this.

grandsons enjoy this outfit, which they set up on a small table in the basement. They also got a 60 ;piece set which they combined with this one. 6 and 9, they’re in heaven.

Excellent quality. So much better that other train tracks. It has lots of moving parts and helps develop children’s imagination skills. The doors open, lift goes up and down and the crane picks up magnetic cargo.

The people can fit inside the trains and the deluxe trackside many aspects of play. Great for developing imagination, language and physical skills.

Purchased my for sons 3rd birthday. Was a little tough to set up since it’s so big ! So much fun. My son has been entertained for hours. So many cool features and moving parts. Defiantly recommend.

The Big Jigs Figure of 8 Train Set and Name Letter Trains to spell out my son’s name was the perfect birthday gift for my train loving 2 year old. He plays with his train set every day and also really enjoys the battery operated Flying Scotsman train.

Looking forward to adding to his set with more Big Jigs trains when Santa comes!.

It fits with the IKEA set I already had. The little models are attractive. The wheels seem a bit wobbly but hopefully wont be a problem. A good price for lots of pieces.

I cannot recommend this set enough. It is so surprisingly cute. It has lots of cute pieces like a cargo boats with magnets, trees, trucks that attach to cargo, and even birds that I wasn’t expecting.

There’s lots of items for children to play with and keep them busy. The only problem I see is that the train wheels on the train cars don’t reach the tracks, as if the wheels aren’t tall enough, but the engine car does.

This didn’t bother me as much because I purchased a different train anyways.

I was drawn to this train set because of the possibility for open ended play. With trains, trucks, boats, trees, and a mat that is just landscaping (no 2D building pictures) I was excited to build play areas around this set with our other toys.

You get A LOT of pieces with this set (too many in my opinion, I didn’t even give my kids the road signs, people, buildings, sail boats, and a few others). I love the little trucks (without their trailers), the little wooden trees and the idea/design of the mat but overall this set is just not worth it.

I knew that it was a lot smaller than I desired (less than 2’x3’) but the fabric (if you can call it that) of the mat is awful, cheap and thin. The train tracks are basically limited to one configuration and don’t stay together well.

Except for (ironically) at the drawbridge where they are meant to come apart but stick. The crane intended to lift “cargo” from the vehicles is awkward in every way making it not worth playing with. 6 of the 12 train wheels are on too tight to rotate.

Finally the truck beds don’t connect securely and fall off during play. With so much of the set unfunctional, playing with it quickly became frustrating and boring. Good idea, poor execution.

if you like your kids getting backing to using their imagination and playing with traditional wooden toys, you will like this! I like the range of different pieces – train, cars, boats and trees. The moving bridge and the crane are the favorite parts for my youngest.

Mat is quite thin, but means it is easy to roll up and store.

I was eyeing this up for some time. I finally ordered it for my 5 year old son and I wasn’t disappointed. It comes with lots of wooden figures and houses, and the instructions are super easy to follow.

The pieces themselves are great quality and my son loves the crossing for the yellow bus and red car. We bought three more trains to play along with as you only get one supplied. Highly recommend.

Can’t rate the product but not happy with the delivery process. I tried to rearrange delivery when I wasn’t going to be in and got an error message on the DHL website. It was then returned to sender rather than delivery being attempted again.

This was my daughter’s birthday present so very sad to not be able to play it with her.

Love the train set. Great value, quality, and variety. I was pleased the set was compatible with Thomas the Train. We have a set from Thomas that has a bridge and we needed an extra bridge. The Thomas the Train bridge is forever coming apart when our grandchildren play with it.

This one is constructed very differently and is solid as a rock!.

My grandson requires something more challenging and I wish that there was a way to get him more track and switches. Otherwise it is a good buy; the track and cars are well made and will probably go to his son.

Bought this for my 2 year old grandson. He loves it. It’s sturdy and holds up well to a very active toddler. We have Thomas wooden trains that work great with this track.

Our 3-year old grandson, who received the gift on his birthday, was thrilled with it. He kept his father playing with him and the Railway Builder all day long, not wanting to go bed when bedtime came.

The builder train set was a gift for my nephew who just turned 5. He loves trains and he loves to put things together so it was a good fit that is keeping him busy for quite a while. He even shared some of the trains with his little brother.
