20 Best Wool Hunting Jacket (2022 Updated)

First, regarding the weight, I expect this jacket to be heavier. However, this is lighter compared to my everyday heavy-weight leather jacket. And the best part is, it’s warmer. I would really want to see it in action by the Winter season.

Second, the design. I love it, very classic, I think it has 80% resemblance to the Filson MACKINAW WOOL CAPE COAT. Made in Canada, same classic design, take my money. There are still opportunities to be better.

Things like the ugly/cheap/plastic logo on the front pocket. The logo now has been changed to plastic white, which totally defeats the classic silhouette. I rather have a printed cotton logo to stay classic.

The buttons are ugly, plastic, and ugly. Rather pay a bit more to have metal/timeless buttons. I expect to use this jacket a long time. So don’t mind paying a bit more for that. Overall, I like the jacket.

Will come back for review in the wintertime though.

First off I bought this in solid green to wear daily in cooler temps and for scouting or hikes. I sized up to XL and glad I did, I seem to be a “Large plus” or “XL lite” in FL jackets or sweaters and this fits exactly like that which is great for me.

I have worn this thing almost daily once the temps warranted needing a sweater. This jacket is the perfect weight to keep you warm but is not bulky and breathes great while scouting. It has great stretch and I layer it up or down as the temps or activity dictates.

Overall I really love how versatile it is and always grab it as I’m leaving the house (even grab it to lounge on the couch its so stretchy). My issues with this jacket are the fit (not to be confused with sizing which is fine).

The way the jacket is cut across the shoulders and upper back is just weird. It feels as if the whole garment is sized correctly and someone messed up and took an inch or two out of the shoulder area.

I’m constantly pulling and adjusting to take the tension out of this area. I’m an average to slightly heavy build but no crazy muscles popping out to warrant this. The second item is the hood: it isn’t shaped like the other sweaters or jackets I have from FL, It is a bit long and has a weird front stich that makes a vertical wall on the front of the hood.

I can’t figure out why it’s cut this way vs the other gear I have and just sits funny? I can live with this but for the price and how well all my other FL gear fits it’s just strange to have to fiddle with my jacket every time I wear it.

If they come out with a 2. 0 version that addresses the hood and shoulder I would gladly give it 5 stars. Until then I will continue to wear it daily while tugging at the fabric periodically.

I use the sawtooth frequently in daily life whether it be for cool mornings archery elk hunting, shoveling snow or backcountry splitboarding. The function of the piece is perfect. On a recent splitboard mission I put on a wicking Tshirt, grid fleece and the sawtooth.

Once we left the trailhead and hit the skin track the sawtooth kept me warm in the subzero morning temps and managed to quickly dump heat once the sun crested the ridge. Functionally this is an amazing jacket for active pursuits in cold weather.

My only complaint is that the fit does not accommodate an athletic build. I’m 5’9, 165 lbs, 41 inch chest, 30 inch waist and wear a medium in nearly everything. Being a technical jacket that I may put a shell over I needed the closer body fit of a medium.

In this area it does well, but the jacket is too tight and a bit restrictive in the shoulders. I’m uncertain if this is due to the layout of the panels or if FL is just designed with a boxier fit. Either way I keep using the sawtooth and have no plans of that changing.

I have to admit; I was a pretty skeptical when I first opened the packaging and saw how lightweight this jacket was; the fact that I’ve never paid that much for one single item of hunting clothing; and that I was kind of picturing something a little heavier for later in the season, like 30 to 50 degree weather here in FL….

but oh how pleasantly surprised (and even a little giddy!) I was once I tried it on!!! I’m sold on First Lite now! The customer service was too-notch & super friendly; my package came really fast and I’m blown away at the technology of the Merino blend and the way it keeps me warm, yet ventilated with the unpredictable weather here.

The fit was perfect, I love the cut of the under arm area for raising my bow or rifle without the jacket rising up and how it’s still flattering to my figure. I normally wear a size small to medium so I chose the medium and it gives more than adequate room for a base underneath.

The wool isn’t itchy; love the zippered chest pockets and zippered hand pockets with the thumb holes! This jacket is dead silent, too! Definitely a must for me. The only minor thing that kind of irked me is the zip on the hoodie and how it goes up to right under my nose; which is annoying.

It’s kind of an in-between; not a substitute for a face covering and not a zip up to just the neck…plus it moves all over the place when I turn my head; so a balaclava is still a must with the jacket; which is fine by me; I just don’t zip all the way up.

We still hunt whitetail deer in central Florida (literally smack dab in the middle of the state) so i have used the jacket for both warmer hunts in the 70’s and chillier hunts in the 40’s/50’s and stay totally comfortable in both climates.

I bought 3 for Christmas this year! My son, my daughter’s boyfriend and one got myself! The product is outstanding! Plenty of room to wear a shirt and a hoodie underneath. My daughters boyfriend’s jacket was a medium and he had 3 shirts on and it still fit with room to move! I bought a 2XT for me and a 4 XT for my son and plenty of extra room as well! Very well constructed and very warm! This will be my everyday jacket!!! We love them!! I also bought my daughter one of your flannel shirts and it’s warm, beautiful and very well made!! I really like the look, weight, and true to size fit of this coat. But I had to add one modification myself. It needed an inner chest pocket for a modern smart phone. All of the exterior pockets were either too shallow or unsecure for a modern smartphone.

I tried carrying mine in the left hand pocket for awhile and while it fit, I could see it easily falling out by doing something as simple as getting in and out of the pickup truck. So. I added a left chest inner pocket using some scrap Cordura and Velcro I had on hand.

Aside from that one thing, I’m sure it will serve me well for a long time.

I’m a rural Idahoan studying in South bend, so the fall can turn immediately to winter temperatures. The jacket loose enough for a loose flannel. The sherpa on the inside is not blanket soft, but its amazingly warm.

Sleeves even though they are not sherpa lined, I have never been uncomfortable. There is ample shoulder movement. This jacket + flannel + tshirt layering has kept me warm in 43F very comfortably walking in between classes.

My only issue with it is that the hand pockets are unlined and awkward. They are awkwardly wide but not deep. They are sewn in with a slippery, polyester fabric. I feel that my phone would slip out if I put it in there.

My keys do fine because they have a little more weight. And because they are unlined, I they do not really keep my hands warm at all. If they would fix the size or even add some other fabric, it would be greatly improved.

PS: I’m 5’9″ and 170 lbs wearing size Medium. Perfect fit and sleeve length.

Just got back from my hunting trip in North Eastern Alberta. We had extreme weather conditions, from blowing snow storm one day, -23c the next, -20c the next with gusting winds. Sitting in my blind was very challenging.

But my Big Bill wool hunting jacket and matching pants definitely helped me brave the harsh elements. We had a very successful hunting trip, and weather in the blind or on the spot and stock these clothes were lite, easy to walk and move in, and quiet, but most of all they were very warm.

I’ve purchased a lot of different hunting clothing over the years but the Merino wool hunting jacket and pants by Gostwear is by far the best hunting clothing investment to date. Thank you Gostwear!.

The coat is a really nice quality. Exactly what I expected. The only comment I have to make is that the length was long. I recommend adding that to the size chart. The fit was a bit bigger than we thought.

He usually wears a medium and we had to change for a small.

Fits super good. Its is quiet like i expected. The hood is a bit small. Exited to put it to test in the bush. The pouch in the back is multi purpose, so that awesome. Really like it so far.

I’ve had a Mackinaw Cruiser for nearly 2 years now. Of dozens of jackets in my closet the Mackinaw Cruiser might see the most action. This jacket can simply do everything. I’m 6’0 180 with broad shoulders and arms and the L is perfect for layering underneath in the winter.

You’ll likely want to layer because this durable wool makes a pretty effective shell, and it’s also a bit scratchy on the skin. Winds regularly average 15-20mph where I live in coastal New England and there’s usually a bit of moisture in the air, too.

This mackinaw wool will repel everything but the most vicious wind and keeps dry in light rain. The wool is also durable enough to stand up to regular chore work or protect from errant branches or a thorn or two if hiking.

AND breathable enough for light hikes or walking out in the field. Though it is a bit heavy for intense hiking, it’s probably worth its weight for bushcraft / camping. It even doubles as an extra blanket in a pinch.

With a closet packed full of technical gear, it’s still so easy to leave the Mackinaw Cruiser hanging next to the front door. It’s so often the logical choice. Worth every penny.

First of all, I love Filson and the Cruiser is a classic. Check out the history of it if you haven’t already. I have three – a forest green, red/black plaid, and now this green/black plaid. It’s one of the early colours the coat used to come in (1920s) but is now a limited release, or so I understand.

The price is great too, especially if you have the Altitude membership. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a classic piece to add to your wardrobe. Especially recommend if you are tired of red/black buffalo and want something a bit different.

Only comment I would make on the produce sizing is to consider getting a size smaller than you would normally – it runs big. This is not uncommon for this coat. I would normally wear a Medium, but bought a small.

I’m 5,8′ and about 160.

My first of many Filson pieces. The jacket is quality and it shows in the weight and in the details. There are so many features from all the external and handwarmer pockets to the internal chest pocket but my favourite is the utility pocket in the back where I keep my gloves and notebook.

It fits a bit big for layering. I usually go for skinny fits but this jacket is more box cut than tapered. I usually buy my jackets in large but I bought a medium and it fits perfect. Shoulder openings are exactly where they’re supposed to be.

I got the grey color and can easily wear it on a hike during the day as well as go out in the city at night. It’s super versatile. My only issue is, I want to buy more colors!.

Bought an XL and normally wear a L or XL depending on brand. In this case the length of the jacket is perfect, but the shoulder width is L at best so getting anything more than a heavy t-shirt under the jacket is impossible.

Love that it’s quiet, but needs a better shoulder width to match the size (the bottom of the jacket is fine).

Says can handle the cold of the rut. If you’re hunting in Texas that would be true, but not in Wisconsin. The cold cuts right through this jacket. I wouldn’t recommend wearing this if your rut conditions are below 40 degrees.

I really like this jacket. Good for cool temps. I believe it is light enough to wear as a hoodie under a heavier coat in cold temps.

This is a really well-made blazer. I normally wear a size 8, and after trying on both, it was clear I needed to purchase the size 10. I am 5’6”, 135lbs, with an athletic build (swimmers shoulders and narrow hips).

I wear 26 or 27 in R&B jeans. Two things to note. Firstly, the sleeves are extraordinarily long, or I have disproportionately short arms that I’ve just discovered at the age of 50! Alterations will be required for sure – and I’m perfectly OK with that as Nordstrom has excellent seamstresses on staff.

Secondly, a few people have complained about the blazer not being lined. Let me tell you why it’s fantastic it isn’t. I have very expensive wool blazers all with polyester linings – they don’t breathe so I end up sweating up a storm wearing them.

Wool is a fantastic material and breathes very well. No liner, no overheating, no lingering BO on the blazer. Win – win – win. The lack of lining also means the blazer follows your body contours well conveying a slightly more casual appearance.

Given that I often wear Blazers with jeans or casual pants, that’s exactly the look I’m going after. Bonus insight: I like the extra buttons closer to the neck line which allow the blazer to be converted to more of a jacket if the weather is brisk or windy.

There’s a good reason the Slade blazer sells out almost as soon as it lands on the Nordstrom website: It’s elegant, it’s modern, it’s beautifully crafted. It’s streamlined yet soft (no need for a lining), and the diagonally placed pockets create a flattering line.

(The pockets are 100% functional; all you have to do is snip the threads that close them. It’s a touch you see only on higher-end coats and jackets. ) I love the Army Green color as an alternative to black–it goes well with almost everything in my closet.

This is not an oversized blazer: the sleeves are slim, and you may find you need to size up. I did not: I’m 5’8″, 132 pounds, 32D, and the 8 fits me perfectly.

Great quality and weight of fabric. Good lines, not fussy. I’m 5’4” 125-127lbs. 30F, size 4 is just right. If you’re bigger chested with small waist, you may have to experiment with sizes (possibly tailoring) to get the silhouette right.

I’m happy with the end result, this is a refreshing updated look for a blazer. Unlined and very comfortable-I don’t feel the typical constriction of a blazer. Dress up with skirt and heels or dress down with jeans and loafers.

I bought this coat because I loved the throwback grey plaid and because my other RJ Classics coats all fit me so well. And it didn’t disappoint: I wore for the first time at a recent show and received numerous compliments! What I didn’t anticipate is how very comfortable this jacket is because it is less constructed (yet still looks tailored), cooler, and so unrestricting because the fabric has so much stretch to it.

I would definitely recommend this coat!.

This jacket is a lovely weight. Not too heavy- perfect for warmer hunting days, but still wool and warm enough for the crisper mornings. I wouldn’t wear it in the BITTER cold, but that’s what the heavier jackets are for.

Great product for the cost, I have had mine for a few seasons now and it has lasted nicely.

I bought both this one and the RJ Classics Sydney Blue Label in a 2S. I’m 4’11, 33-34in bust, 27in waist, 113lb. While the Sydney fit perfectly in a 2S, I had to size down on this jacket to a 0S, so maybe a bit vanity sized despite the fact they’re supposed to be the same sizes.

This one also had about an extra 1-2in sleeve length when compared to the Sydney. Ultimately I purchased this one because for only about $30 more there was a significant improvement in quality. The fabric in this jacket is very nice and the cut is very flattering on a short torso! I’m very happy RJ Classics makes jackets for short adult women.

I wore this to a local summer show and felt well dressed!.

I wish it was lined because it’s nice! Fit is a little big which helps for layering. The wool is a little itchy so wear something with sleeves under it. I would layer when the temps drop below 30 or so.

It’s a simple jacket that uses good materials and is built tough.

Bought this in the fall and wish I had bought it much sooner. For cold weather it is great especially layered with a sweater. Also the quality and materials are really nice; well made. I am not a large male so wish it was a little smaller through the body.

This coat met all my expectations. I would buy it again. It is very well built and warm. Moosjaw has great customer service. I paid for next day shopping. Fed ex did not deliver on time so I emailed customer service.

Bought my Mini here on buds(Great service as always). I was looking for something other than an AR-15 to go plinking with at the range and “truck” gun. Couldn’t have picked a better option as I love it.

The gun came in nowhere near close with the irons but after 20 rounds and I’ve got it. Rifle with 55gr is now giving me groupings around 1. 5MOA (1. 5″ at 100yrds) With irons and not benched. To me that’s good enough for my purposes.

My only complaint is while tuning in the irons the elevation adjustment was stuck and I stripped out the screwhead a little as whenever installed was far too tight. No biggie though. After 300rds I’ve had zero malfunctions and to the newcomer like me I was intimidated by disassembly but after a couple times I know I could reassemble blind folded.

Tip: besure to read the manual on ALL firearms of course but really study the iron sights adjustment as theyre a little tricky and you risk damaging the threads if done improperly.

Great Weapon, I have had a lot of fun with it. Before you go shoot, have a 5/64 hex Wrench and some lock tight with you. The rear sight became loose after two magazines and we did not have that size in either mine or my sons go bag tool kits.

I soldiered through but it would have greatly improved accuracy if the sight was not moving around! On a separate note, be careful what Payment method you use with Buds. I sent them an ACH transfer from my bank that was removed from my account and was completed in 24 hours.

Took Buds 11 days after that to get me my weapon. Cash in this case had NO Respect at all for Buds. I probably will not buy from them again for that reason.

This jacket is terrible. Poor quality. Poor fit. Just terrible! The sizes run much smaller than the chart says. The hood was so shallow that it didn’t even cover my child’s ears. The shape of the jacket is a bell shape.

Small at the shoulders and very wide at the bottom. Odd looking when worn and not comfortable to the person wearing it. Needless to say I am sending it back.

An excellent jacket, keeps me very warm and dry. Perfect for dog walking in all weathers, extremely comfortable. Would definitely recommend this jacket. 5*

This product is very warm, which exactly what I wanted. But the sizing is a bit on the meagre side. Get size larger. Also VERY heavy.

Love this fleece jacket. It’s warm and waterproof which is a great bonus. I found the size fitted good for me with room for layers.

I have the 2XLT hoodie (which is now discontinued) and the Wooltimate pants. I wore hunting yesterday in PA flintlock with one layer underneath, in 19F temps and 11F wind chill. I was very comfortable.

The wind stopper liner is a little loud if you’re bow hunting and the woods are quiet. But for me, I can manage the extra noise to stay so warm without tons of layers. They are not waterproof in the sense that you can use them as rain gear in a steady downpour, but their construction and the insulating nature of the wool blend is fine in snowy and light precip conditions.

If I could recommend one improvement for Cabelas, it would be to include a phone-sized zipper pocket on the chest or in the kangaroo pouch to hold a phone and primer flask.

I purchased this hoodie wand was very disappointed when I received it. The Windshear fabric was quite noisy and the sleeves were too narrow for any adult male. It appears the sleeves are a common issue because I called customer service and told the woman who answered that I was unhappy with the product.

She asked if the sleeves were the issue before I said anything else. The sleeve issue seems to be a quality control problem because not everyone is complaining about them. So, my guess is that not all of the sleeves are as narrow as those on the hoodie I received.

The noise factor is another matter. If you’re buying this for hunting, you may be unhappy.

I have an older version of this jacket. I love it, but it no longer fits. I bought THIS jacket hoping it would be the same great product, but unfortunately, it is not. Whoever tested this “hunting” jacket and put it into production should be fired! First and foremost, the lining is ridiculously loud! There is no way you would be able to draw a bow without being heard by any deer within 20 yards.

Second, the elastic cuffs on the sleeves are sorely missed. Unless your arms are long, the sleeves swallow your hands and get in the way. I believe the lack of elastic would also allow a lot of cold air to shoot right up your arms.

Seems to me that a Windproof garment should have elastic to keep the wind out, no? It’s also funny that the pics on the website LOOK like they have elastic cuffs, but in reality they do not. Old pic? Even if the cuffs were serviceable, the noise alone puts this jacket on my DO NOT BUY list.

This jacket may be suitable for firearms season where game is typically not at close range, but do not buy it if you plan on using it for bow season. I will be returning mine. Disappointed. Bass Pro should leave well enough alone and stop trying to ruin the Cabela’s brand.

Again, the jacket fits me perfectly. The quality of the fabric is excellent and the jacket is beautifully made. I am absolutely delighted with the linen jacket.

This is a GREAT coat. Runs large. The cut is not unlike a suit or sports coat. Is designed to wear over layers. I can wear a turtle neck, shirt, and vest easily underneath. I find though I’m forgoing the vest.

Yes the sleeves run somewhat long, but again similar to the cut of a proper fitted suit coat. They’re nice in that when reaching overhead they cover your arms and don’t slip up halfway to your elbows.

Like others, I wish it had a double zipper but it has buttons which I use if I want it closed but open at the bottom. I don’t consider that a deal breaker. Normally I work with a tool belt so I just gather the coat together and clip the belt over the top.

Works fine and gives me plenty of freedom of movement. One complaint I suppose I could have would be the ample collar rubbing against my jaw. I wish there was some some soft facing on it or a way to pin it back a little so it didn’t cause irritation when I have a little stubble.

That said this is one of the best coats I have ever had. Its toasty warm and not restrictive. Keep in mind this is a COAT not a jacket.

I have been a dissatisfied Filsson customer for the last 4 of the past 29 years that I’ve worn either their MacKinaw Cruiser or the heavier Double MacKinaw Cruiser, ($430!),a wool coat that weighs 5 lbs.

on the last purchase, the body of the coat where the pocket attached ripped when I just put my hand in the pocket a month after I bought the coat. My wife thinks their imported wool now comes from sheep used for meat an inferior type of wool.

When I saw Maine Guide Parka ad, it immediately said MacKinaw Cruiser to me since outwardly, it has the same lower front pockets, and a pouch in the back which is zippered like the Fillson jacket which uses snaps.

The one problem that I have with the jacket is that the chest pockets are too tiny and I can barely fit my sunglasses in them. In addition, there are 2 pockets inside the jacket, and a tie to cinch the coat up for more warmth.

The thing that made it obvious to me that Beans had studied the Filsson jacket is that every one that I owned had the wool chaff through into large holes next to the outside seam running between the elbow and my little finger.

Instead of there being a seam in this vulnerable spot, Beans added a panel for greater durability. Another nice feature of the jacket is that it’s better contoured than the original with fewer pieces of hanging wool cloth to do things like catch on door latches.

Although the coat is made in Vietnam, I’ve never had problems with anything from there including a Beans rucksack larger than Continental Rucksack which is sadly no longer marketed. I received 2 compliments on my new jacket within 3 days of receiving it.

I look forward to getting years of wear out of it.

So I got this coat in November. After wearing it all winter here in NE Ohio I would say it is great. I wanted a warm wool coat that I could use in the worst parts of winter and this did not fail. The primaloft lining adds the extra touch and the wool in a perfect wind block.

It is designed for hunting but I chose the green and it can be worn anyplace. It does have plenty of room to layer underneath as needed. As noted in other review the sleeves are a little long, they come to mid palm or so, but not that big a deal.

I would add a two way zipper and a detachable/button on hood, otherwise supper warm and very comfortable with big pockets. Love it !.

I absolutely LOVE this show coat! It’s very stretchy and extremely comfortable but is still very cleanly cut while looking incredibly professional. When riding in any weather, be it cold or super hot, I hardly notice I am wearing a show coat.

My only grief with this coat is that it shows dust pretty easily, so it’s essential to take note of where you place your show coat in between classes. However, this is easily preventable and the coat cleans very well in the washer, coming out looking brand new.

The last note that I have about it is that while I’m typically a size 8, I was fitted as a size 4 perfectly. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this show coat to anyone and I’m so thankful for R. J Classics!.

Great pistol Taurus doesn’t disappoint for a $500. 00 you can’t beat it! Only thing that you might want to up grade is the trigger, trigger pull is a bit heavy. Have run 50 rounds of ball ammo with no hiccups.

Bought this on line. The size fits as per Browning sizing chart. No removable hood. No zippers on the chest hand warm pockets. No matter how I try, I can’t get a 4th option out of this 4in 1 parka. Final Sale so I am stuck with it.

It was what I needed in the pattern I needed. I ordered this from another supplier as it was on sale,($25 less. ) They advertised this same pattern but shipped a different one. I had to pay to return it.

This garment is superbly made and has so many features it seems almost impossible to use them all. If I have one criticism it is that it is a little heavy.

I absolutely love this jacket. It offers good warmth, excellent wind resistance and keeps me dry in everything except heavy rain here in Seattle. The fit and stretch are awesome with solid zippers and construction.

If I could change one thing it would be adding some ventilation to the underarms or even a back flap. If you run warm despite how thin the jacket is you’re going to sweat.

This jacket was just the right size. The outer surface is great and the inner lining is comfortable. It is not very warm however, so, it is really a half year jacket (warm half of spring through warm half of Autumn).

Jacket can be used as an outer layer or inner layer. Very pleased with the material and color. Liked it so much I ordered a second one for when I eventually wear out the first.
