20 Best Wool Watch Cap (2022 Updated)

Dense, well made, and designed for serious cold. This would be too hot for just a cool fall day. Also, these are a bit snug circumference-wise right out of the bag, but will loosen to that perfect fit after some wearing in the elements too stretch it out.

Also since it’s all wool DO NOT throw it in with the regular laundry. Cold water/ delicate soap (woolite or similar) wash it by hand, then let it air dry. Great value for the price. You can’t go wrong for all wool and solid construction.

If you are looking for a soft fluffy cap that won’t itch at all, this isn’t for you. If you want the traditional, very warm, tough,worsted, naturally water repellent performance of 100% wool this is your cap.

The length is greater than others I’ve tried, can be rolled down my shoulders to keep my neck warm if needed. Not a lot to say about a centuries old design, still in demand, still in production. It works very well.

Wigwam’s is the best of any I’ve tried. I live at 8000′ in the Rockies, I carry and periodically wear a knit cap most of the year.

This is the best toque I have ever owned. The weave is thick enough to keep out a cool breeze, much better than any other knit cap I’ve worn. High quality, great fit (I’m a woman with an average head).

I agree with other reviews that the firm fit makes for bad hair, but I care more about warmth and comfort. And I have yet to find a toque that doesn’t create bad hat hair. Every few years I lose this hat and rush out to buy a replacement.

I don’t know what i would do if MEC stopped carrying it.

I am 67 and very particular about my hats. This one is SUPER. Well made, all wool, not too tight, not too loose. substancial, warm! GREAT DEAL! ( I recently lost my wool hat that I bought at a flea MKT 🙁 and this has nicely filled the ticket! Thanks.

Surprisingly comfortable, hard to believe this is 100% wool actually. I don’t find it scratchy. Fits my big head well. I wouldn’t call it fashionable but it’s not ugly.

I expected a more tightly knit cap for a wool cold weather hat. It is loosely knit and does not hold any particular shape. I think it would be good to act as an insulator under another wind-proof cover of some sort.

To keep your ears warm on a cold, windy Wisconsin day, it would not be my first choice.

I purchased this toque as it is very similar to one my late father wore when I was a child. While I typically love Filson products, this was scratchy and unpleasant. I don’t know if that sensation would wash away but it wasn’t enough to keep and find out.

I did find the toque a little tighter fit, but I have a large heard and it was new and needed time to loosen up. Didn’t love it and returned it.

This is a heavy duty wool beanie modeled after the classic USN watch cap. I was pleased to see that it is made in the USA out of pure wool. The cap is structured and substantial, without being itchy.

Definitely more durable than the many merino hat variants out there. I expect this to last me many years of casual wear. It is too hot for active wear, but I have a lightweight wind stopper cap for such purposes.

Overall it’s really nice. But for the price, it could’ve been of better quality. The materials are nice, being all wool. But the knit is a little loose in some areas. It’ll probably tighten up the first time it gets wet, so I’m not worried.

The fit is snug, and kept me warm.

Wore this snow shoeing and skiing Mt. Baker in cold weather, high winds, deep snow. I usually have an issue with hats making my head itch. Not with this. Even under a helmet, sitting on the lift, heavy uphill snowshoeing, or back country powder this hat was warm, breathable, and fit perfectly.

Some of the other reviews mention the hat being way too tight but I wear a size 59 helmet and it was perfect, not loose, not constricting. As for the logo its hardly noticeable, very small and can always be turned inside out or backwards.

There is a seam that runs top to bottom but I didn’t notice this even under a helmet or under hoods with goggles wrapped around. Highly recommend this product. My favorite buy besides the base layer hoodie.

The fabric feels incredible against the skin, upon opening i was worried it might actually not be warm enough but my fears were quickly put to rest. heavy wind and freezing temps didn’t matter. this hat kept my ears and head warm and comfortable through it all.

Much thinner than I expected so I was skeptical about how well it would work. It fits very snug on my bald head, almost like a swimmer’s cap. I tested on a morning hike in about 28-30 degrees. Kept me nice and warm and was not scratchy like my usual cotton beanies.

If the weather was much colder, I’d have probably put another beanie over top of it. Even though I worked up quite a sweat and the beanie was pretty wet, it still kept my head as warm as when I started.

It was nice to be able to just roll the sides up a bit when it got too warm and roll it back down without the nasty cold sweat feeling. Would definitely buy again.

I love Smartwool base layers and own several sets. As a person with a bald head, a hat is a fact of life in cold weather. However, I do run hot and sweat easily, so I have to be careful about what material I put on my head.

It has to breathe really well and be capable of wicking moisture readily. It also has to insulate reasonably well without causing me to overheat. And these are all of the things that I love about my Smartwool base layers.

This hat does the exact same thing for my head and I love it! It also look nice.

I ordered the black. Tried one one and was pleasantly surprised. First time I have found a watch cap that stays on my bald head. Wool is a plus and tight weave also. This is a warm cap for cold weather.

It is so nice I want to wear it every day; but I’m not woke and will leave it for cold weather. Three pack is even better; but one will last me the rest of my life. Probably give the other two to family.

Although it was really that cold the first I wore this cap, I could tell that it will keep my head warm. It has a nice snug fit which will still give to fit a larger head. The other thing to note is the label sewn in showing the government contract number and stock number.

Nicely made and warm watch cap. It is a little tight but stays on well, I usually wear a 7 1/8 hat.

This hat is a great all-around hat. Not super tall. I hate tall hats, and this one is just right. I prefer this weight fabric too. If you are active and 0 deg F or above, this is the hat you need. I am recently bald too, so hats are important to me still.

Warm, good fit and a minimum of trademarks/advertisements. I have a large head. caps that fit are hard to find. This one pulls snugly over my ears and keeps my head quite warm, even in cold, windy weather.

It does have a small “RefrigiWear” tag, but I don’t feel like an unpaid billboard. And it’s available in a variety of colors, including the unobtrusive dark gray I bought.

I purchased a merino wool hat. The fit is perfect and the quality is excellent as with all canada goose products. The hat is light and holds the heat with no problem while also being easy to wear. Canada goose.

A fantastic brand with top quality products.

I know I’m ready for this coming winter. Last winter I used the Merino Wool Beanie for everything BUT camping and mountaineering (didn’t make it out into the wild last Winter): biking, walking, some running, standing around.

It works best in the low 20s and up, keeping the warmth in with a quality, non-itchy merino wool exterior and added comfort of a soft fleece lining. The hat is tightly knit so the wind has to blow pretty hard to get through, and it covers the ears with a snug, comfy grip.

It’s pricey, but knowing it is made in our neck of the woods (not some sweat shop a half a world away) and trusting in the quality of Canada Goose I was willing to lay down the dough. This hat will keep your head warm and comfortable, it will roll up and go right in your pocket without much bulk.

The Lightweight Merino Watch Cap is very soft and lightweight without the bulk but still warm. I will still have to see how it holds up this winter to see if it’s worth the 5 star rating. Only real disappointment is the way it was packaged.

It was just thrown lose in a regular shipping bag that made it a little dusty. You’d think with the price it would’ve been shipped in a small Canada Goose box and sealed like a previous CG toque I purchased 4 years ago.

I purchased two of these caps in diff colors. The black one fit me immaculate par recommended size. Unfortunately, the army green with brown trim (so cool!) wasn’t identical in width although I ordered the same size in both hats.

It was much looser. I ended up sending it back (paying the international shipping :o) and was kinda worried about inconsistent sizing discrepancies for further purchases. Although. my friend loved mine so much I got them one for Xmas (they have the same size head as me) and it fit like a glove.

Summary: Yes, I’d purchase again. All for it’s uniqueness and quality.

This is my sixth Sterkowski. I love their product. The quality cannot be surpassed. I like to support family owned business and you can tell they take pride in their craftsmanship. In addition to this grey wool beanie, I also have the olive one.

For whatever reason, the grey wool is not as thick as the olive, not saying that as a negative, just an observation.

Just watch-cap~ Wool beanie ~is exactly what I was looking for, It retains the heat when it becomes wet,(hand wash only and drip dry)It will tighten up; but if you put it on your head and pull down itll shap fit and dry Pretty much to the shape of your head(some thing I learned in the Marine Corps in the late 70s) Even though we had black ones, My current job requires us to wear black or blue.

Most important It retains the heat, It doesnt look goofy:D it fits sharp looks professional((warning)) Dont wash it and put it in the dryer, If you do That!!Then you might as well use it for a Little green toy soldier:).

These are a bargain. Real wool watch caps. I’ve been wearing them since 1979 when I was first issued one. This batch of 3 I just bought brings my total to about 10 of them. Much better & warmer than the polyester versions.

Why so many? Two in the car, two in the truck, two in a go bag, two in my Winter dresser drawer, and two in the closet with my extras and ext5reme cold weather gear. I am a big weather wuss. Gore-Tex Coats & a few pants.

Wool everything else from socks up to these caps. The watch caps are a definite bargain. Do a little Google and you can learn how to fit them to your head. NEVER put these in the washer and especially the dryer! Ever.

Hand wash ( Woolite is best but not required), do not twist. Air dry flat – those are the basic rules on all woolens unless you have the $$$ for specialty dry cleaning.

Was looking for a more of a wool textured. Feels more synthetic. The display mannequin shows a more fuller crown when folded. The one shipped is thinner on my head. For the price s good value but if you want real wool I dont think this is the right product.

These are well made and ideal when the weather is cold and breezy. They cover the ears when needed and offer a lightweight but cozy alternative to heavier head coverings. And if the weather warms they easily fit into a pocket to take along.

As a joke, I ordered a six-pack of the caps in black to be sent to a friend in the Southwest since their temps were supposed to drop near freezing. The joke’s on me because I received a picture of the whole family wearing (and loving) them.

I’ve been told many times how much they appreciated such a thoughtful gift. The caps are a high-quality product at a low price, especially considering that you get a half-dozen.

Bought the green option. Not super quality but for the low price this is one heck of a deal. Fits my big head. Would be great for those cold nights sleepin out under the stars, just for keepin warm on a hike late season, toss a couple in the bug out bag or wear while huntin.

I love this tuque but it’s not meant for really cold days, -15 max unless your wearing a hoody or have lots of hair. Wind goes through it, it’s not super thick but it’s very comfortable and cozy on chilly days, warm and never feels clammy, Keep it out of the dryer, my son now has one and I just bought another.

Colour and sizing as advertised.

I have all the Filson toques and gotta say this one is a real gem. It fits so comfortably and conforms to my head like nothing else from Filson. It’s the cheapest toque from them too! Made in The USA and out of acrylic.

It’s warm enough for -10c. When it gets colder than that I use the rag wool beanie from them. I would highly recommend this toque without hesitation. Mine is the Mushroom colour and looks great.

Love the toque. As for the free shipping over $50 – I think not. I was charged for shipping and just so people know I live in a small town in Saskatchewan and when I order from MEC, PRFO, and Sporting Life and my order is over $50 I always get free shipping as they promise on their sites.

Because of this I always check those sites first. PRFO also ships from Quebec like Altitude does so that can’t be an excuse.

I’m a beanie addict. It’s a problem. These are a slightly bumped up version of a beanie made by a brand which rhymes with “star art”. Look, I also love those. But this Filson one speaks to me on many deep levels.

I’ve loved the brand since I was in college and feel very sentimental about it. Filson stuff is quality and has a refined look about it. Also, I will admit I bought this initially for the name – not the style.

I’m happy with it and have another color in my cart already. You won’t be sorry. Just buy one. Or two.

Warm and stretches nicely to fit my big head over a baseball cap (I wear the baseball cap underneath with a brim that shades my eyes when outdoors). Also, I was concerned it would itch because it is wool, but this wool is soft and doesn’t itch my forehead.

Very pleased that it is American made, too.

I absolutely love these caps price is right and they are nice soft wool fallow the washing instructions other wise you will end up with something that will only fit a new born cold water hand wash hang dry.

I live in SouthEast Alaska and hats are a daily for me. Whether it’s hiking in the rain forest, fishing on the boat or gathering treasures from the beach…I definitely put them to the test. I have several Rusteks and they are at the top of my favorites list! They are comfortable from the first wear and they stand up to the crazy climate here.

Bought this as a gift to replace a much loved but not very insular acrylic beanie my 17 yo son had. This was his choice for style and because it was wool. It is soft and stretchy and looks great on–he’s already worn it once when it snowed and he’s really happy with it! The Rothco Wool Watch Cap fits well and is not too tight on the head. It’s comfortably warm on very cold days. However the wool weave does allow cold air through in especially windy conditions A tighter weave would eliminate this problem I’d still recommend this hat.

When this first arrived, I thought, “How is this going to fit on my head? Sailors must have really small heads. ” (I’m a former Marine) I put it on and it was uncomfortably tight. For some reason, I tried it on the next day and it didn’t feel as bad.

Apparently the cap stretches. It now feels comfortable, and, just as important it is warm. I’m completely satisfied and may buy a couple more. The trick is to give it a little time to adjust to your head size.

My head is slightly larger than average, and, it may have taken a little longer to adjust. It’s a great hat just give it some time to adjust.

Plugs into the mains so no batteries to buy apart from occasionally for the bell push. They last for ages perhaps years before replacement. Very good product for a very reasonable price. 2 Bell pushes is great for 2 different doors.

Plenty of tunes to choose from so there should be something to suit everyone!.

This beanie’s a winner. It’s light, stretches to fit my larger head and remains comfortable as temps fluctuate. Like my other DW beanies-caps, the Watchman has zero itch and is SOFT. Got it in the auburn, and may have to get the green ’cause that looks nice too.

Really glad I found Duckworth while on the hunt for a USA made beanie. I’m not a very big guy so OFA hats can sometimes be loose on me. This one fits great but I can tell that it has plenty of room to stretch for larger heads.

My biggest take away from this hat is how warm it is. Even when compared to other wool beanies/watch caps I’ve owned, this one stands out. Being merino wool, it doesn’t get too hot when the temps rise a bit.

It’s definitely too warm to wear indoors but it can accommodate a wide range of outdoor temps. Overall, I’m super happy with my purchase. I love supporting smaller US companies and I’ll certainly be purchasing more gear from Duckworth.

If you’re looking for a new beanie, look no further. I have been wearing a non-wool brownish Carhart beanie for years and am so glad I’ve found this wool gold rush Duckworth beanie. I’ve put it to the test a few times already while hiking in the mountains.

The body heat regulation a wool beanie provides is glorious. The beanie did seem a bit tight when I first put it on, but it’s stretched and now has a very comfortable feel.

I got the orange one and am very happy with it. Vibrant, comfortable, the stitching seems really good, and it’s warm enough for most Northern Ontario winter days. My hat size is about 7-1/2 and I think I’m probably at the edge of it fitting properly.

If your head is any bigger it might start to feel a bit tight.

Ok toque, on par with Carhartt’s offering quality-wise, but this Filson is a little smaller. Material is decently thick, and i have a bigger head and it still fully covers my ears, but carhartts similar offering is slightly larger.

Id give the nod to the carhartt on this one, but its still better than most toques.
