20 Best Wrench For Plumbing (2022 Updated)

This is the most heavy duty pipe wrench I have ever seen ( Plumbing is not my profession ). I was battling with a 50 yr old radiator and I need a big lever arm wrench. I ended up using a smaller pipe wrench with a 6 ft piece of pipe extension for added leverage.

This wrench weighs buy its self over 50 pounds so it was more weight that I could handle- I needed more torque. That being said this wrench is ready for anything – looks like you could hang a car off of it without any sweat.

super strong and super tough. Just not something that will help your typical D I Y – let the pros use it !!!.

I WOULD BUT THIS TOOL AGAIN. The only reason why I’m giving this 4 stars is because the tool broke on me within the first month I’ve owned it. Since there is a life time warranty though it’s not really a big deal.

I work on cars professionally, and I use this for tie rods when they are seized up. The lower jaw is held in place by a single rivet, and the jaw itself is what broke. So if anything, I would really like to see an updated version that has 2 or 3 heavy duty rivets that hold the lower jaw in place instead of just 1.

If you want to void the warranty, but have that jaw never move again, I guess you could weld it shut with ark welding, and high current. The metal is very thick, and some grinding may be needed. Overall the tool is great, works in tight spaces.

Absolutely worth the purchase. I am being a little critical because out of the $15,000 of tools I own this is the first one that I broke. Haha I did do a few pull ups on the small handle before it finally gave way though and I way 200 pounds.

So pretty much don’t do that and it’ll probably last forever.

Ridgid never disappoints. This is a great little pipe wrench for a good price. I own many different sizes of Ridgid pipe wrenches, mostly aluminum because of the weight difference. This one is obviously ductile iron but I prefer that because it is so small an aluminum one would likely not feel very heavy duty while using it.

I actually typically carry this in my back pocket and hardly notice it is there. It’s very useful in my line of work and I have no complaints whatsoever.

I’m not a plumber, but I do plumbing jobs sometimes for friends and of course for my own house. Recently I worked on the plumbing for 3 sinks, 2 bathroom and 1 laundry room. Usually, I break out my wrench set consisting of 5 larger wrenches and another roll up wrench organizer with many more open end wrenches.

This time, I almost only needed this tool. It worked great on the 2 bathroom plumbing, but I had a bit of difficulty tightening the nut on the 1/2″ compression fitting under the laundry tub. Using the tubular end of the smaller wrench and placing it inside of the angle stop did not give me enough leverage to tighten enough to stop a small leak.

I finally used my 13/16″ open end wrench to hold the angle stop while tightening the nut and that did it. No leak. It did definitely help with tightening the 15/16″ nut way at the top at the faucet. With very little space and having to reach way up, I could use this wrench grabbing the nut at a slight angle.

The wrench still firmly gripped the nut. This tool is an ingenious idea and will make plumbing jobs a whole lot easier. Thank you Ridgid!.

First started plumbing was giving two adjustable wrenches to install stops with. Was always a pain. Slipping , busted knuckles , and just took longer then needed. Was giving a stop wrench. O wow Talk about a game changer.

I would recommend a stop wrench to anyone that is doing a lot of work installing stops. I’ve used one for about 2 years on the same apartment complex project and has saved me so much time while installing stops !!!.

The 15/16 opening was too small and I had to file it down. The original finish was ridged and would only fit over the compression nut with considerable force and visual scratching of the surface of the nut as shown in the attached photo.

Been wanting this type of wrench for a long time. Always justified not buying one because I dont need it all the time and the old short one still works. But with todays deeper kitchen sinks, longer is better.

And the price was right. A good quality tool.

Excellent adjustable length that reaches up into cramped spaces and hard to reach bolts. Easy to handle and tighten with locking mechanism that easily adjusts to the size of your bolt AND flips over for easy loosening as well!.

I’m retired from the communications service industry and commercial construction so I appriciate the value of dependable well made tools that make jobs easier(time is money is very true). I keep busy helping friends and family repair/remodel their homes and have two of my own properties I maintain.

Tradesman always told me Ridgid is the best and after further research and use I’ll agree. This wrench fit in tight spots and is fast to use because of it’s small size. The jaws stay set, grip without slipping, release quickly and don’t wear out as fast as other brands.

The Ridgid pipe wrench line also has a lifetime warrantee with the biggest size veriety compared to the new M kee brand(simular price, made in China, no LT warrantee). The tempting HF Pitts brand are inexpensive but their jaws slip, wear out fast and handle fails(good for a few uses but my bruised and bloody knuckles said no more).

Remember always buy the best that you can afford even though I didn’t at first. Zoro has everyday competitive pricing as the orange HD box store but with Zoro’s occasional 15% or 20% off code, nobody can beat that price.

Zoro shipped to my house free with my over $50 purchase and the wrenches arrived in less than three days. I searched used online at the bay but the shipping brought the low prices to more than Zoro new.

received in good shape. satin finish uniform, and smooth, no jagged edges, or burrs. jaws have a good bite, (don’t slip ) fit generally symmetrical, centered, and square with each other. and has a good balance.

Rigid is well designed, and historically very durable and reliable. I think this mini 6 in. will do the same. its a life time purchase. Very Pricey, USA made. I have seen and used much lower price, and quality, which you will regret once you purchase a el-cheepo.

Some comments in this review say thumb wheel and jaws fit sloppy. maybe so, but I disagree, as its a pipe wrench, designed for self centering clamping action, and when I have used it for a variety of plumbing, automotive, industrial jobs, it always worked perfectly for me.

its not designed to withstand a 2 ft. cheater bar. its for those hard to reach, confined area’s of lower torque, where no other wrench will grab or fit. I purchased several, for myself , and grandkids.

I recommend. retired automotive engineer.

Just like its big brother the 10” version, this is a very nice tool. Excellent quality, great material and perfect machining. But that having been said, it’s tiny! lol Almost comically small. Don’t get me wrong, not to say it isn’t useful, but only in limited situations.

I have a wash basin sink in a position where no ordinary hand tools can reach to remove/replace the 1 1/4 inch bronze nut. This is probably the best tool for this job. I had the bonus of having my 2 1/2 yo grandson laying next to me to have him watch his grandpa doing this home project.

The tool was I received was brand new, and I saved enough with this purchase to economize on the charges of a professional plumber, and I have a very nice tool to share with family and friends.

Works great to get to the faucet in the small space between the sink and the wall.

We are a mechanical contractor with about 55 years in business. We have always bought Ridgid tools. You can’t beat the quality and the value. Ridgid pipe wrenches used in industrial applications last for years, while competitor brands rapidly wear out.

You get what you pay for.

This Ridgid 31055 8-Inch Heavy-Duty End Pipe Wrench replaces a similar “normal” small pipe wrench that disappeared along with a larger aluminum pipe wrench. Wrenches and wenches, I seem to have trouble holding on to either.

The good news is the design of this tool, for me, is far superior. I like the offset handle, as i use a small wrench in tight places which makes this tool ideal. Very well constructed, as most Rigid tools are known for, a good value and a better than what I had replacement, which is really rare now days.

I have had this wrench for over twenty years and I just can’t figure out why I haven’t tossed in with the scrap Iron. Material quality is good, like Rigid’s reputation. But It just doesn’t work as a wrench.

I have to continually fiddle with the positioning of the jaws to get them grab onto the pipe. Sometimes I can’t get it to grab at all on a galvanized pipe. It seems to work slightly better on black iron, but it’s still the last tool I pick up.

The engineer that designed this did not deserve to get a bonus, and the folks that did the pre-market testing thought it was for plastic pipe.

After over 2 years of owning this wrench I still have it, at it’s in one piece. It does what it is suppose to, but my overall liking of the rapid grip wrench is fair at best. It makes a better hammer than anything.

If you are doing black iron gas lines and are installing fittings this is the tool for you, but if you are expecting to wrench on nipples with nothing to grab on to, just get a standard wrench. Ridgid missed the mark on the design.

The shape of the bottom jaw is wrong and the spring in it could be stronger. I think a stronger spring would take care of most of the issues. It has held up. I have wrenched and beaten on stuff that shouldn’t be wrenched on with this little wrench.

Its just a matter of getting the thing to bite. When I buy a new wrench I would just go with a standard aluminum pipe wrench. There is minimum time saving with this wrench when you can’t get it to bite easily.

Ridgid just missed the mark on this particular concept and product.

My 40 plus years of remodeling, plumbing & gas has been cut short by a heart surgery and 6 grafts, but your tools are still going strong. I’ve seen cheap Chinese wrenches break in half but never Rigid.

Used them in Wrightsville Beach & Wilmington, N. Carolina, to Raleigh, to Virginia mountains and Alabama. Unlike politicians Rigid tools are utterly reliable ! The Commercial flex/drain and residential 2”-4” drain machines are on this Veterans’ wish list.

Needed to change out my leaking bathroom sink faucet. It is in an incredibly tight location between the basin and back wall of the cabinet. Everything I tried (crescent, open end wrenches, channel locks) did not give me enough room.

Went to my nearby big box store and and was stung by the price. Went further down the road to HF hoping they sold them. Sure enough, but were all out of basin wrenches on the store shelf. Took 15 minutes, but the sales person found one in the stock room.

Said they had a run on them recently. I do wish the wrench end was a little smaller. Probably ideal for a kitchen faucet, but you just don’t need that large of an end for a bathroom faucet, but to be fair the big box faucet wrenches looked very similar.

A Quality tool that’s easy to use- for under $8. ! Then, if you think you’ll only use it once at home take it back label intact(and clean) and get store credit for something else you need from bigbox stores or Harbor frieght.

Cause you cant rent one or resell it fast enough to get the Dap240 or new hammer you’ll use repeatedly. Inflation cause prices to go up_ this same tool cost me $4/5 2 years ago. Times are tough all over.

I had the infamous floppy faucet problem. I just could not find my old basin wrench. That limber necked, rusty old spring brooke thing was missing. I don’t know if it was borrowed, buried in the pile or just plain LOST.

A quick online search revealed that my neighborhood Harbor Freight store had one in stock and for a good price. Joy! Relief! Hope! A brand new one was just hanging on the hook right there in the store.

The price was reasonable, the quality adequate, the drive was short. What more could I possibly want? Someone to drag all of the stuff out from under the sink would have been nice, oh and someone to lay in the cabinet and tighten the nuts would have been grand.

I was even able to complete the job before I started cramping up. So, yes it’s all good!.

Over the years I’ve tried many different styles of basin wrench, and have occasionally found others useful under certain circumstances. But when it comes down to it I’ll take this model over any other.

This is the only basin wrench you need – you cannot compare it to anything else – brand or size – a must have for any plumber or DYI person

I had to order this product because the big box store don’t carry the large basin wrench. Worked great in the tight place I had to work in. The nut was really rusted on there and this wrench didn’t slipped worked great.

I thought it was a little pricey but it is a solid and the expandable handle worked great too.

I like this wrench a lot. Flaws for me are it only opens to 11/16 fully open. I found a paramount that has a smaller head and opens to 3/4. Another flaw is the metal seems like it could use being just a little bit harder.

That being said there is not much play in the worm gear/ adjuster. It doesnt open up while youre using it. If it opened to 3/4 I would be completely satisfied with it.

The additional 75 deg. angle yields two additional options for getting into tight places. That and the fact it is about 2/3 the thickness of a standard 5/16″ also helps. I have an old Lotus Europa TSC gearbox that has a nut that is almost impossible to get tight when assembling and loose when adjusting.

This worked perfectly, the first time. Money well spent.

I bought this tool for my husband as one of his Christmas gifts. His 6ft2 around 250lb & when I first seen this i said to my self “It’s way to small “!!!! It’s like the size of his middle finger !!! So I immediately called to return it.

On Christmas He opened his gifts, one was an Excel tool box & needed to be assemble. He stated he needed a wrench!!! I said I bought you one but I believe it’s not for you, so Im going to returning it.

He said well let me at least look at it. He opened it , used it & said “This is the most Convenience lightest & perfect size wrench I ever used”. What can say ?Thank you for making him happy & sorry for assuming this was not a good tool when it was “The Best”.

I’m a fabricator and machinery installer. When I’m laying pipe this thing is a dream. I have very bad shoulders and heavy pipe wrenches hurt. I could put so much torque behind it, it’s replaced most of my pipe wrenches.

The head is light so I can adjust it with one finger. Awesome pipe wrench!.

I’ve been using 2 of these heavily for about 6 months now as a sprinkler fitter. They have not disappointed! One extreme case had me dancing with the devil and I had to put a cheater at the end of one of these and it took it like a champ although it does have a slight bend in it now but I can’t blame Milwaukee for that.

I’m a Sprinkler fitter. A few of us bought this wrench to try it out. Good wrench except the top jaw needs to be a little bit tougher. I recommend this for pipe 3/4” and lower. We used it on 1” and the top jaw breaks after a month or 2.

Wish they made one a bit more heavy duty. This happened with 3 different fitters.

I am a sprinkler fitter. This wrench would absolutely score a 5 star in design and function. Unfortunately they break at the head under normal use conditions and pipe within limits (1”) in my opinion I believe this wrench to be extremely unreliable.

They are ok, if you are into ox and the flashy blue styling then they will be great for you. But as an adjustable they are average really. Mechanism gets a bit sticky after a while, even with cleaning.

No better than rothenberger ones. If you use an adjustable regularly and you want quality then Bahco are the ones you want to go for.

Fantastic quality, I just wish OX TOOLS would branch out into handyman tools and even Automotive tools. As good as if not better than wrenches 3 times the price of OX tools. OX Tools the real man’s tools.

The wrench is built for convenience. This is one of my favorite Go-To Tools. I use it for most of my tough cylindrical projects. Its strong, has smooth adjustments and sharp serrated jaws for gripping.

Ideal for most of my working surfaces requiring speed and convenience. It ratchets quickly to ensure a quick good grip. Its lightweight, comfortable and allows for easy use. For those tough jobs where you would use a heavier more cumbersome pipe wrench, I simply increase the torque by attaching a galvanized pipe for an easy off.

This is one of the most versatile tools in my arsenal.

Used fir large truck air brakes. Quick and easy. Initially hesitant. Looked gimmickie. You won’t go back to the original design if you try this. Irwin is typically my plier brand.

Have been using these irwin wrenches for a while now and are really happy with them easier to use with one hand grips well and balanced nicely and they look great compared with the older types.

Love my 48 inch HD pipe wrench, and all the rest of the ridgid pipe wrenches all the way down to my 10 inch aluminum. Dependable, had them for over 41 years. Used and abused, some handles bent from using too long of a cheater, but still as reliable as the day they were bought.

I bought my Rigid pipe wrench in 1973 as an apprentice. It still serves my needs and is the first wrench I reach for when I need a pipe wrench. How could I not give it a 5 star rating?

I have a 10inch heavy duty pipe wrench which I use every time I have to do gas line for my furnace install or boiler installs. It’s so easy to use and it doesn’t come loose unlike other brands out there.

This tool worked perfectly to remove a broken piece of shower arm from within the fitting into which it was threaded. The user should be careful to keep the toothed part of the tool within the edges of the broken piece to avoid damage to the internal threads of the fitting from which the piece is being removed.

Also, the tool needs to be held parallel to the axis of the broken piece. not too difficult. This tool was well worth the purchase price. It saved the cost of a plumber’s visit and possibly the replacement of the fitting in which the arm had broken.

I have no way of evaluating the longevity of the too in heavy use; but, for an amateur plumber/homeowner it is fine.

One reviewer mentioned that these are American made tools. This is not the case. The packaging clearly states “made in Taiwan” That said, these things are fantastic if you have to remove a close pipe nipple in one of these sizes.

(props to the reviewer who took the time to list the sizes, which home essentials direct couldn’t be bothered with) I’d been trying various methods with a soft brass pipe nipple, but once I put one of these to the task, it screwed right out with no fuss.

The only suggestion I can make is if the nipple is tight, break it loose, then tighten it slightly to get the tool loose, then remove it. I took one out, and the tool was wedged in so hard, I had to thread it all the way back in to break the tool loose.

After that, it came out easy. I have run across one nipple which seems to be too smooth on the inside bore, and the tool won’t bite – yet. Haven’t put too much time into that one since I don’t need to get that one out quite yet.

There’s nothing like the right tool for the job, and if you need to remove a short pipe nipple without chunking it up with a normal wrench, these things are well worth it. How often will I use them again? Probably not very soon, but when I do need them, I’ll be really glad to have them.

I needed this to remove a piece of PVC fitting that had broken off screwed into a pump. Definately worth the trouble to get the right tool for a one-off job since damaging the motor would have really sucked- the tool is very solid and if I needed to do this sort of thing all the time I’d be happy to keep it forever.

In my case, the interior diameter of the PVC fitting was slightly smaller than the 3/4 inch. I gently hammered the tool in, letting it create groves in the pipe interior to improve my grip, then used a vice grip to rotate it to get the pipe out.

Worked like a charm, and no damage to the tool from the hammering or vice grip.

For $7.01, you get a high quality Stanley pipe wrench that could be mistaken for a $30 wrench. It works great, is sturdy, and is a beautiful yellow color.

It grips pipe and seems to work well. So far I’ve only used it on sch 80 pvc well pipe. Definitely better than one I got at Tractor Supply.

Heavy duty and at an affordable price. You really can’t go wrong with the pipe wrench.
