20 Best Xqd Card Reader (2022 Updated)

The supplied cable is compatible with my Windows PC. Importing photos to Lightroom works flawlessly. The CFexpress Type B card inserts into the reader with a reassuring click and ejects with a simple press to release from the reader.

Hi. This is good product and worked for what I needed it for: Transferring images from my XQD card to my iPad Pro into Lightroom mobile. This is accomplished via USB-C. One thing I noticed is I had to connect directly to the USB-C port on the iPad.

I could not connect via the port on the Magic keyboard. Transfer is fast as expected with XOD. There are probably other manufacturers that do the same thing, but I went with SONY since I use the SONY XQD card which are equally reliable.

Other benefit: Much easier to use than connect directly to your camera. Transfers with the camera drain your battery in a quick manner and are slow.

So I recently bought a Nikon Z 7ii and needed to update the firmware. With Nikon Z series, you have to update the firmware from the memory card. My old card reader didn’t accept XQD cards. I tried reconfiguring the camera to accept the SD card as the primary one, but couldn’t get the firmware update to work using the SD card in any configuration.

So, I bought this Sony Card reader, reset the primary card to the XQD card and accomplished the firmware update in about 2 minutes start to finish. This product might be a tad more pricey than others, but it worked beautifully and saved me a lot of time, and most importantly, I didn’t have to take the camera to Nikon for assistance (they were unable to help me with this issue via chat and email).

This is a very fast reader: I measured it at over 300 megabytes/second copying 21 GB of data from a Sony G series XQD 64GB card on a 2020 iMac, which was probably limited by my hard drive speed. I had been using a Lexar USB3 reader that came with their cards so many years ago, and while it wasn’t too slow, this reader is much faster.

You do need to install a Sony driver from an all-Japanese Sony site, which is a little scary, but straightforward: just follow the Atech instructions, and look for Win or Mac at the bottom of the page for the right driver download.

Build quality is pretty heavy with a thick metal case that makes it easier to eject the card (you push in the card to spring it out) without moving the reader too much. The red LED that lights up when a card is in the reader is too bright, so you might want to cover it up with some tape.

The reader also comes with its own Thunderbolt 3 cable that looks like it’s a little under 2 feet in length. I highly recommend it if want the fastest possible upload speeds from your cards!.

This is the second XQD reader that I buy. The previous was from another brand. I connect it to my brand-new Mac and it won’t read it. It says to go to the manufacturer’s homepage from where you are redirected to Sony’s page (all written in Japanese) from where you are supposed to download the driver.

I went to all Sony’s pages worldwide trying to download the driver, but the button on their page won’t work. I wrote Atech to help me out. Haven’t heard back yet.

SD reader stopped working after one year. USB to compter USB port bent. The dangle of the of cord makes it vulnerable to fall when using with laptop. Often would not be recognized when plugged into sleeping computer, would have to eject, then re-insert to have it available.

will try sony stand alone xqd option, since sony apparently monopolized this option. (come on 3rd parties) but the xqd reader is FAST and wokred well while it worked.

The Sony Dual card reader works like a charm with my Surface Pro 3. One interesting aspect is that I can load both the XQD card and an SD card together, then read and write back and forth between the two cards.

This means that I can shoot with the XQD card in my Nikon Z7 and later copy the images to a much less expensive SD card for storage. I then erase the XQD card and continue to make new images the next day.

Simply put, I do not need as many of the very expensive XQD cards.

The product exceeded my expectations, not only was it shipped and arrived sooner than expected, but when connected via usb 3. 0 to my PC, it transferred a 64GB CFAST Lexar card full of RAW file images, over 1,000 of them in a matter on seconds( under a minute) it is super reliable and with the CFAST/SD interface, my memory cards are at my finger tips on my desk.

The convenience and quality is second to none. I would definitely recommend it.

Bought this after the memory card read on my MacBook gave up the ghost and I was stuck using a USB 2. 0 card reader that had been collecting dust for an age. Difference in speed was immediately noticeable! The quality of this is nice, but then how hard can it be to make a decent feeling memory card reader? Knowing it’s Lexar gives me a bit more confidence that it won’t break.

I like that in the future I can incorporate this into the Lexar dock for faster imports from multiple cards rather than one card at a time. Forward thinking. Not much else to say. It does what it says on the tin! I do wish the lead was a little shorter and more flexible, but when it comes to using it on a desktop I’ll probably be grateful for it :P.

I copied about 272 RAW files from a my Canon EOS 80D from an old SanDisk Class 10 SDXC card to an SSD in my Win t0 laptop with an older USB 3. 0 card reader plugged into a USB 3. 0 jack. The transfer speed averaged 6 MB/second.

Took half an hour, plus a minute or to for a readback compare. (The copy software was TeraCopy. ) When I received this reader today, as a test I repeated the copy of the same files, from the same card, through the same USB jack, into a new folder on the same SSD.

This time the entire process, including the readback compare, took four minutes. The transfer speed averaged 50 MB/second – much faster than 30MB/s speed rating printed the card. Can’t wait to get the R7 I have on back order so I can see what speeds are like with the pair of ProGrade 128GB UHS-II V90 cards I’ve bought to use with it.

Purchased this a few months ago for my laptop. I get about 145 – 150 MB/seconds on my internal SD card reader, and about 135 -140 when I plug this into my usb c port. I thought maybe some component in my laptop was not up to snuff, so I tossed this aside and forgot about it, having not returned it in time.

Fast forward to now and I’ve just built a brand new desktop with usb-c ports and was thinking this would be a good time to re-try it. In some tests on the new desktop, I get 900MB/s second for 1 or 2 seconds, and then the speed drops to 135-145 MB/sec I’m using Lexar Professional 2000x UHS-II SDXC Memory Cards and writing to Samsung SSD 970 and 980 EVO 1TB M.

2 drives. Color me unimpressed.

This plug-and-play device is simple to use and simply does its job perfectly. I use large Compact Flash cards in my professional video camera and needed a secondary reader. The Vivitar makes it as easy as plugging into the USB port on my laptop to start transferring clips.

This simple reader works for 5 different formats. For best results, plug it into a powered port (not on your keyboard, for instance). It will then be able to read or write to any of the ports with ease.

I highly recommend the Vivitar RW-50 as an inexpensive card reader!.

Bought one and it did not do anything so I took it back and got another one and that one was unable to be recognized and unable to start. I have windows 10, a new laptop, and tried multiple different ports and nothing worked.

If you call the company they ask you to ship it to them and in about 3 weeks you’ll get another one but I have no reason to believe that one would work so I’m not wasting my time. I’m summary very unhappy with this product because 2 of them did not work.

The reader is of great quality. Sturdy metal body quite heavy in the hand and comes with both usb-c and usb-a cables. The only reason I rate 4 stars to it is that it’s quite expensive compared to other type of readers of alternative brands, and that there isnt any alternative yet as this is the only reader that work with the CF type A cards that the sony a7s3 use.

Sony takes advantage on this and charges you $$$ for their cards and reader. Surely in the future they’ll go down in price when ProGrade and Lexar get their cards out in the market. Though I must say that the build quality is 10/10.

After faffing around for hours trying to get my pc card reader to recognise the 64gb micro sd card I’d just bought and finding out that although the pc was just over a year old the card reader design was older.

Even after updating it it would still not recognise any sd card over 4gb. So decided to buy this external card reader. What a joy! Just plugged it into the pc’s usb port, inserted the micro card and away it went.

No problems and what a relief, it was so easy.

First look, high quality plastic casing with very nice matte finished. Transfers data very quickly, just as usb3. 0 should. Comes with some strange velcros strap presume to be used to hold the wire which kinda useless because it’s quit stiff, but in a good way.

Seems very durable. Works great. That’s the bargain.

This is about the finest looking and working SD card reader you can buy!. works well, robust, comes gorgeously presented and includes Velcro to tie it up somewhere. A fantastic purchase, well worth the slight premium over cheaper models.

It’s USB 3. 0 so not the fastest or newest standard (and definitely not Thunderbolt) but it’s plenty fast when used with a UHS-II card. If you don’t have UHS-II cards then you probably don’t need this model.

Connection point between the cable and the USB C end seems loose-ish, like you could spin the wire around. But I have 3 of these and performance hasn’t been impacted. Inexpensive enough to keep one in every camera bag and/or one with with your iPad.

Can confirm this works with iPad Pro 11.

I bought this to use to upload SD card data from my digital camera to a desktop PC. The connector on it was not compatible with the USB connector installed in the PC, so I could not use it. This fact was not obvious to me in the product description provided here.

I returned this product. When shopping, be sure what you are buying is what you really need.

I bought this Card Reader to quickly upload large image photos to my social media through my phone. I was surprised how quickly it connects and reads all the photos, but disappointed slightly that it diminished the size of the photo.

MB down to KB. I still love that I can upload a photo quickly or email it out quick, just wish it alloed it to retain full resolution.

Having bought a new PC that has spare USB ports but no photo card reader, this adaptor simply is excellent. Enables either a full or micro SD card to be used and simply plug in the USB end into the computer.

Excellent design and appearance, and about the size of a small thumb. Simply hard to believe that it was so inexpensive. Have been using it for a month now and no problems whatsoever.

I have a new laptop which for some reason did not have available a regular SD card reader as an option for it. It has a micro SD card reader but no regular size SD card reader. I have some electronic equipment which uses only the original size SD cards for database storage and I have to use my laptop to keep these databases updated.

This card reader was a great solution to the problem. I bought 2 of them so that I could have 1 at home and 1 at the location of the equipment which uses the SD storage cards. The readers work great for doing the updates.

They are fast and were a really reasonable price at B&H.

Found an old camera and it had old pictures on it which I wasn’t sure I had saved before I had put the camera away so I was careful to try and make a backup. As I didn’t have anything that would handle the xD ( not the same as the SD cards ) I got this.

Very carefully connected everything plugged in the usb and the directory opened and I copied ( not moved) the pictures to my computer. It reported all the files copied, I ejected the media via windows and then disconnected the usb and removed the card to put it back in the camera.

The camera would no longer recognized the card and wanted to format it. None of the files I copied could be opened either. Back to the card reader and recovery software which tried to pull the images off and recover the card but everything recovered was still unreadable.

Formatted the card in the computer took some pictures and then put the card back into the reader just to try and open one of the pictures. corrupt. so I tried just opening a few more and call corrupt, but this time I managed to put the card back into the camera and the pictures were still working.

So, this card reader literally corrupted the images it was reading and managed to completely corrupt the FAT16 file system just by reading it.

I needed something to eliminate some of the clutter on my hard drive/increase the amount of available memory. So this was the best way to accomplish this without having to buy another computer…

Compact, cheap and does the job. What more could you ask for? Plug and Play with no setup or drivers required. The included USB cable is only about 9 inches long, which works fine with a laptop but a longer cord is better for a desktop machine.

I had a longer cord in my extra cables box so no problem.

Let me start off by saying that I am a mac user. That being said, I use a mac tower – a mac book pro 15″ and a mac book pro 17″. Sometimes I run out of firewire ports and I need to use the available USB 2 ports.

I recently upgraded my mac tower and installed a USB 3. 0 card. NOTE There is a difference between USB 3. 0 and 3. 1. I also recently was given PC Laptop that does not have firewire ports. That is were this card reader comes in handy.

Although the firewire card readers are MUCH MUCH faster then the USB 2. 0 port card readers, if your computer does not have Firewire 800 or if you are using the firewire ports to run. let’s say your external hard drive, you can still use this USB 3.

0 in your older USB 2 ports and get the job done. Mac has abandoned Firewire and has moved on to thunderbolt. I have not done any side by side comparisons on transferring photos using firewire 800 vs USB 3.

0 yet but I am sure I will be impressed with either. I typically transfer between 4 to 8 Gb of photos at one time so speed is important to me. I purchased this card not because I wanted faster speed over my firewire 800 sandisk card reader rather I purchased this card because my PC Laptop does not have firewire ports and I found myself stuck.

The sandisk firewire card reader ONLY hasone slot for a CF Card. This Transcend USB 3. 0 card reader has slots for CF-SD-MicroSD and several more. I purchased white because not many people have white card readers and it will cut down on any potential problems in the future while I am in the field with other professionals.

This is my 2nd Transcend Multi Card reader and I’m very happy with the product. It’s fast and secure. As a professional photographer I need to upload large amounts of pictures from 2 different camera’s (2 different size cards) and this works like a charm.

So now I have 1 reader at my desktop and 1 for my laptop.

I wish manufacturers would realize there’s still a large compact flash user market and make a dedicated reader for a fair price. This reader does it all, but I only need the CF reader. So far it works.

plugged this into my 2018 Macbook Pro to transfer images off a SD card. Immediately my computer locked up and the fans started spinning full speed. Computer shutdown and never started up again. Reason? Fried logicboard and Apple wants $1500 for the repair.

I will NEVER purchase an Insignia product again.

Was in a pinch, bought this out of desperation, got the job done. It was cheap so I don’t expect it to last forever. It’s small and the cable is extra extra short, will keep it in my pack as a back up.

Fast cards read fast, slow cards read slow. Would be nice if it wasn’t hardwired.

I use this device to check my game cameras. I pull the card place it in the reader and plug it into my phone and it comes up with the pictures. it works flawlessly, carries easily in your pocket, is lightweight and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to view pictures from your camera or transfer files from your phone to another device.

I received product in intact state. It works very well. Data transfer is very fast. I copied/past 1. 1 GB of data from my laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad e550 with core i7 & 16 GB RAM) to microSD via this card reader/writer & operation needed only 36 seconds to be completed.

Let we talk about hot point: I saw many reviewers on B&H & Amazon complaining about plugin port of this device to it’s USB cable, said that it is very delicate & vulnerable to detachment from motherboard of this card reader & it is very bad.

& so on !! And I was very hesitated to order this card reader due to these FALSE reviews from non-verified buyers. But finally, I was brave enough to order it. Now, I can confirm that ALL these negative reviews are incorrect & false! The point where this card reader connected to it’s cable is okay! I tried it (connected & disconnected for 13 times) & no problem at all.

I tried data transfer after each of these 13 times without any problem. Please appreciate that this device is a pocket card reader not an armored vehicle!! If you deal with it as an armored vehicle, then it will certainly broken in your hand due to your harsh handling! If you handle it smoothly, as it should be, then no problem at all.

If you connect/disconnect cable USB cable from this device gently then it will never broken. But, if you do this as if you play rope pull game, then it will certainly damaged – due to your faulty handling! I would like to thank B&H store to make this great card reader available in between my hands.

No such card readers with such broad compatibility available in my country, Iraq. I recommend this card readers for every one need to make it’s PC of ideal accessories. Finally, it is better for B&H to remove all negative non-verified reviews because they are as simple as such all are false!.

I’ve had many card readers through the years and have seen many card formats evolve along the way and I still have most of them. A lot of the newer readers can’t read them all. I asked B&H for recommendations and they thought this one would meet all my needs.

This is the best reader I’ve ever had. It reads 59 card formats which covers every card I own. I highly recommend it for new and older users like me. I’ve been a photographer for over 52 years so I’ve seen a lot of advances, from film through everything digital.

Old card reader gave up the ghost recently. Needed a card reader that could handle the older camera CF Cards. This one did the trick, and works well. Being on the USB 3. 0 format helps with other cards too.

The reader is small and is powered by the USB port. This makes the reader easily transportable with your laptop gear, or even pocket.

Don’t buy this. It worked at first, now it doesn’t work at all. Jams up my pc when i plug it in, no matter which port i use. tried multiple cards, same results. task manager doesn’t respond, windows explorer freezes.

If it ever DOES work, it takes FOREVER like reading a HDD from 1994 speeds. Brutally slow. Plugged in the SD cards to my MBP and they all were recognized instantly. Then plugged in the card reader to my MBP and what do you know?! Same result as my PC.

This is a complete waste of money and time. I’ll be steering clear of Insignia from now on.

Usually I would never bother reviewing a product, unless the product has done so much harm it is needed. This sd card reader looked good online with lots of positive reviews on how well it worked, so I went ahead and bought it.

I then use it once and it barerly works, a little wary but I still carry on using it, until today. I had just gotten back from an large trip and took hundreds upon hundreds of photo and video and was very excited to start editing it all, so I put It into the sd card reader! It doesn’t work, so I take it out and put it into my camera.

I then discover all my photo and video have been lost, all because of a little piece of plastic. I advise you to stay far away as possible from this product and to not support a company who makes products as faulty as this one.

Worked great (very limited use) for the first two years I owned it. Used probably 40-50 times. Then, no Sandisk brand sdxc cards would work anymore. Sony Tough brand worked perfectly and I ran a few tests to make sure, but sure enough, NO Sandisk support and the file transfers would stop mid way through specifically with those cards and those cards only.

Tried them in a Kingston brand I had purchased a few years back and they worked fine. Very odd issue but an issue nonetheless.
