20 Best Yarn For Socks (2022 Updated)

This yarn has so many negatives, I hardly know where to begin. First of all, it has a harsh hand-feel. Second, it’s advertised as a fingering weight when in fact it’s closer to sport (heavier even than baby).

Third, it is inconsistently spun, resulting in thin areas. Fourth, it is impossible. let me repeat that, IMPOSSIBLE. to knit a pair of matching socks with it unless you are the luckiest person in the world.

Even if you think you have the colour sequence matched up after stretching 25 feet of two parallel strands, you will find that the sequence is not maintained throughout the skein. I’ve knit six socks with it (barely enough in one skein for a single women’s medium sock), and no two match.

I do know what I’m talking about – I was an art-needlework consultant for many years, and have never had this issue with any other space-dyed yarn. And therein is actually the problem: this yarn is not space-dyed.

It is blended in spinning. If you decide to buy this yarn anyway, don’t make socks with it unless you don’t care if they match.

This is one of my favorite “cheap” sock yarns. I’m obsessed with knitting socks, and Patons knits up beautifully and holds up well. I reinforce the heels and toes with nylon thread to help them last even longer.

Patons Kroy Sock Yarn is nice to work with. One skein is enough for one sock (depending on the pattern you choose and the size of your foot of course). The yarn doesn’t split easily, and if you have to frog your work, it doesn’t pill up or fray when you tear out the rows.

The finished product is cozy, soft, and warm, and best of all, doesn’t require special care when laundering. I’d love it if Michael’s offered a wider selection of colors in this brand because Patons has a ton of fabulous options.

The stores I’ve visited in the Northeast and the South only stock about 4 colors. I can usually get them on sale for 50% off at Michael’s, which is always exciting. When I order other colors online, it costs about 3x more than what I could buy at Michael’s.

I hope they start stocking more variety because I would buy it all!.

I’m knitting my first pair of socks. Even though the yarn had the same dye lot my socks don’t match. The yarn is splitty. I think the yarn is pretty soft and the sock is comfortable on my foot. I tried it on during a heat wave.

I’ve made these for me and I want to see how they wear. I like the fact that it’s machine wash and dry. I also bought this yarn in muslin. I’m new to socks but not new to knitting.

I have crocheted a full set of socks and I am now working on knitting a new set of socks to wear on a daily basis. I have made most of my socks with the Patons Sock Yarns. I plan to happily knit more socks with these as I am wearing holes in the first socks I made years ago.

I find the colors and how they show in the various patterns delightful. Thank you for stocking this brand and I would love to see more colors!.

Patons Kroy is my favorite “workhorse” sock yarn. It’s a bit thicker than most typical sock yarns so I go up one needle size when using it. I find it pleasant to knit with and the socks hold up really well.

One thing to note with the “FX” colors can sometimes be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to match the two socks perfectly. If that matters to you, go with the regular Patons Kroy rather than the Kroy FX.

Also, depending on what size socks you are making, you may find you need a third ball. I can get a pair out of 2 balls with just a tiny bit of yarn left over. If the socks were a little bigger, a third ball would be needed.

My son and his family live in Italy at the foot hills of the Alps and go skiing every week-end during the skiing season. During the years I have knit the three of them knee high ski socks using the Patons Kroy.

Since the yarn is 75% wool and 25% polyamide, it is very durable. It flows extremely well when knit on 3. 5 mm needles and is available in many lovely colors. Unfortunately, lately some of the Mexican style colors have not been available.

However, I can honestly recommend this yarn for durable, very pretty socks that their wearers are happy to use when skiing in the Alps. Excellent yarn!.

Love this sovk yarn. Great for hat, sock and sweaters. So far I have made hats that are light weight. On skein makes a beanie, two makes long brim beanie or slouche hat also two make one pair of sock depening on foot.

I wish micheals carried more colorways or made a similar sock yarn with same fiber content. I have seen paton sock yarn catalog and they have so many colors I have not seen before.

What I look for in sock yarn is that it can be tumble dried because when socks are given as a gift Unfortunately the wool socks get put in the dryer and shrink! This yarn was very easy to knit with and I would recommend it to others.

I’m hopeful that the color selection will increase in the future so I can purchase some more. I consider knit socks a “fun” gift so I don’t want to work with the same color of yarn consistently.

Smooth, soft, squeezable. Perfect yarn for socks. Would definitely use this again!

Love the feel of yarn, but couldn’t find like starting point in color variation. So socks won’t be exactly the same

I bought this in a store specifically because of the fiber content: I was excited to knit with mohair and silk. When I started to cast on, I noticed that when I pulled the yarn snuggly, in certain areas it would break.

It seems like the fibers are shorter than in most other yarns and they aren’t spun tightly together. However, I was knitting a ribbed hat and, in the end, breaking didn’t end up being a problem since there wasn’t much tension.

Knitting was pretty smooth aside from the organic fibers that needed to be picked out every few yards. It wasn’t super annoying but it would also be great to not have to do that at all. The care instructions say to dry clean, which, during a pandemic, and even sometimes outside of one, if inconvenient.

So I made a couple of swatches to test out cleaning methods. I used SOAK on one and it softened up the texture of the yarn a bit, which is good. I threw the other swatch in with my sheets and washed and dried it on regular settings.

It didn’t shrink or felt and also made the yarn much softer than before. All in all, if I ever buy this yarn again, I’ll only make hats with it. I don’t think that it’s a good yarn for clothing or indoor blankets.

I loved how the colour-change happens. I took the advice on the pattern though, swapping the ball of yarn, every two rows. This definitely helped the colour-change effect. There was no need to cut the yarn each time, I just dropped one yarn and used the next.

I had tried just using one ball at a time, but the stripes of colour were too wide, so I ripped it out and used the suggested method. I didn’t bother to do that for the sleeves and you can see the difference! However, I’m delighted with the result and so is my granddaughter.

I bought this particular pattern because I liked it, but for me I found the yarn somewhat hard and scratchy. I finished the 1st sock and it looks just like the picture. Knitting the 2nd sock to the heel I realized that the stripes do not match up exactly.

It seems that the length of yarn for each color is not as long as in the first sock, making the sock shorter by almost half an inch. To compensate I am continuing to knit the leg part with the blue for the foot and so will start the heel a bit later than in the first sock.

I really like the idea of the matching pair,- now if they really matched that would be great. In the picture I have already knitted 3 rows of blue, but the needles are covering it up. When both are finished it probably won’t be too noticeable though.

I read all the reviews before purchase and thought I was getting a lovely skein of yarn for a pair of socks that were to be a gift. As I am knitting the yarn feels “scratchy” in my hands. Would I want to wear these??? No! Finished the first sock, put it on to see how it would feel on as I continued to have an issue with feel.

Terrible. I wouldn’t wear these myself let alone give them for a gift. Perhaps for some of you the feel does not matter, but for those of you for whom it does please be ware!.

I tried to make my husband a pair of socks using this yarn. I am trying to make the pair for the third time. Each time I tried I ran out of yarn, the yellow starter thread appeared before I could complete his toes.

My husband has large feet and since I knitted the socks from the top down I had to start over to readjust the length of the sock. The sizing table on the inside flap did not help guide me for his extra long feet.

I really want him to have a nice pair of socks from this yarn.

I LOVE this yarn. At first I was concerned that it would slide of the tips of my needles too easily, as it is a bit slippery. But I figured I would get used to it, and once I did, I couldn’t be happier with how beautifully it works up.

I would suggest using wood needles rather than metal, however. I’ve knit a cople of pairs of socks so far, and they are soft and cushy and comfy. Just be careful if you are a TV knitter like me, it’s three twisted strands, so it does split easily.

But this won’t be a problem for experienced knitters. I have purchased this yarn in 6 or 7 colors, which are all wonderful. Once the weather turns cool, I’ll be purchasing the DK and Worsted versions.

Great color and texture. Is made with some natural fibers that I was looking for. Good price. I should have bought more. Colors were prettier than the website could show.

The yarn is not the softest sock yarn I’ve ever used but it is not the coarsest either. I really like the color transitions and the fact that it is not an overly thin yarn. However, I have had a couple knots where the color transition was thrown off slightly or altogether.

In the worst case, I spliced the color transition to the next color and used the deviation to start the next sock but the purple shade was more vivid than the first. I am not very picky about this sort of thing but I figured I should warn those who are.

Half way through the second sock, the yarn was joined with a knot and 3 color sections were left out. It was not possible to knit a matching sock. This is sloppy product control and I will not take the chance of ordering Mary M again.

I used “Step Softly” rainbow color.

These socks are Amazing. I saw a photo of a pair in a local yarn shop and when I went in to buy I was shown the empty rack where the kits Had hung. So I ordered from the Woolery. I have made about six pairs so far and Love them…no elastic to bind your ankles, so Warm so pretty shove into washing machine, hang to dry in about a half hour…they don’t stretch up to my older lady knees but who cares!!.

I haven’t used the yarn yet but it’s lovely and I will make a scarf with it using the Utube video. The Woolery is the best place for all things weaving! Great customer service and every one is always so friendly and helpful!.

I used the Uneek sock kit 53 to make a scarf using the pattern from the Woolery. It turned out really well and was lots of fun watching the pattern develop. The videos included in the pattern were very good and very helpful.
