20 Best Yarn For Sweaters (2022 Updated)

I have made the same cardigan twice using yarn from HL. The cardigan took me 8 days to complete both times. I am currently making it a third time, and I bought this yarn instead of the HL yarn. I am on the 14th day because I can’t crochet with this yarn as quickly as I normally could.

The reason is because this yarn splits and snags CONSTANTLY! On average, about every 6th stitch, I have to take all the loops off my hook and start the stitch over. It is impossible to get any speed going with this yarn.

This cardigan is nothing but half double crochets, probably one of the fastest stitches you can do, but not with this yarn. I have been crocheting for over 40 years and I have never, ever had this problem with any other yarn.

I am also certain it is not a problem with my Furls hook – those are the only hooks I use and I’ve never had a problem with them either. I absolutely despise this yarn. You couldn’t pay me to ever use it again.

I really love this yarn. I had several skeins in my stash that I bought several years ago. I bought a few 10 packs on clearance here. This will give me enough yarn to knit several sweaters, using the older skeins in stash for contrasting colors in Nordic designs.

A 10 pack gives plenty to knit an adult sweater and leaves a few extra skeins to use as contrast in other sweaters. These newer skeins appear smaller than the old skeins, though both are 100 gram skeins.

The yardage on the older skeins is slightly greater. I have found this brand to work beautifully with some of the patterns in my vintage knitting magazines.

I would think twice about using their yarn again. I’ve used it for many years but this time was unforgivable. first, the yarn was cut after 4-5 feet. I needed to join them. Second, there were little knots here and there.

again, I need to open them and join the yarn. The only reason I did not return them was that I had started my project with this yarn, that I had in my stash, and I did not want to abandon it. so, I am sucking it up and continuing.

the yARN ITSELF IS BEAUTIFUL. I know my project will be beautiful is spite of this Paton’s lack of quality control.

Absolutely no splitting difficulty! I have crocheted for 15+ years and just took on knitting in the last couple of months. This was the yarn I chose for my first sweater and it’s working up beautifully.

Super easy to work with and not itchy at all. I was hesitant to start with wool for my first big knit project but knowing this is machine washable quelled my fears. Can’t wait to wear my new sweater.

Really nice yarn, I made a colourwork sweater with it with no issues. Very soft and comfortable. Unfortunately, the price of this yarn has gone up by a few dollars within a week. I likely won’t be getting it again, but if you feel like treating yourself (or you’re working more than a minimum wage job) I’d say it’s a fantastic yarn.

Great product! I use this yarn for when I am crocheting any wearable clothing items (tops, hats) because it’s soft and has a slight shine which I love! The shine makes my work look high quality and soft! I love it!.

I bought this yarn for a sweater to make my husband. He chose the Pewter color, so I looked at the yardage listed, and it says 148 yards per skein. Upon receiving my yarn (of which, I was thrilled with the color), I noticed that on the label it says there’s only 125 yards of yarn.

So now I have to go out and buy three more skeins just to be able to make my husband’s sweater. Very disgruntled with this, because they don’t sell this at my local store, so I can’t just go out and get it there.

I don’t want to have to pay shipping again. I’m really upset about it, honestly. I just wish the website would have the correct information listed.

I am a veteran and disabled and I crochet lap blankets for veterans in the hospital. I love using Patons Shetland Chunky yarn. The texture is nice to the touch and easy to work with. I like the weight for what I use it for.

I have been told by one of the veterans that received a lap blanket that he liked the yarn because it keeps his legs warm and he really like the colors.

This yarn is of high quality and beautiful colors. I know I will enjoy working with it.

I purchased this yarn to arm-knit a blanket for a family member for Christmas. The project went off without a hitch and the blanket turned out great. The color was exactly what I was expecting and the yarn is nice and soft.

The only “challenge” I faced was joining one skein to another–because the yarn is so bulky, I felt like the joins aren’t as inconspicuous as I typically like them to be. I read a suggestion online from someone else to sew the ends of each skein together for more “seamless” joins, but this would take more time and effort.

Overall, I am still satisfied with the product as is the recipient of the blanket!.

This yarn is a stash staple in my craft room. I have found this yarn to be a light worsted\heavy dk, but works well in worsted gauge as wool blooms nicely when wet blocked. I love this yarn for any outdoors garments as it contains some light natural lanolin.

This will would make great diaper covers as it takes lanolin soaks well. I have used it for scarves, hats, shawls and blankets as well. I have both knit and crocheted with it. natural color takes both natural plant dyes and synthetic dyes very well.

Cannot say enough good about this yarn. I keep no less than a dozen skeins on hand. Watch the lots on large projects, they do have visual differences. Never had issue with too many joins in a skein. I love rustic wool, but I find this soft.

Have made baby outerwear sweaters with it. Washed well and wears like iron. Made my mans hunting sweater in this and it gets two thumbs up from him for cold weather protection and rain warmth too. I recommend this yarn whole heartedly.

The yarn started out very nice and chunky. Shortly into my project, the thickness thinned out drastically to less than half of what it started. I removed more than ten yards of extremely thin yarn before finding some thick enough to resume my project.

I hope the rest is much better quality than this one.

I decided to try knitting again at 56 – I had failed miserably when I was younger – a combination, I think, of having tried to be taught as a left hander by right-handed people, and being given cheap, icky feeling yarn to practice on.

Well, YouTube and Sugar ‘n Cream to the rescue! I was able to find a technique that worked and this lovely yarn that felt wonderful in my hand, yet wasn’t too precious for me to be afraid to make mistakes.

On my first two projects, I was able to create dishcloths as samples that had crisp stitch definition and so I could see as I was going what I could do to improve as I went along, and the yarn felt great as I was working it.

As a cotton yarn, there was some separation of the threads, but that also helped me be more conscious of the knitting process.

I thought this yarn was so cute and I grabbed a free Michael’s pattern for the Crochet Market Bag when I bought the yarn. I was very pleased with the jute yarn. It is very sturdy. The natural jute yarn in “Ombre” has just small bits of color mingled into the mostly natural color and is perfect for the cute market bag.

The bag turned out nice and the yarn will be plenty strong enough to support any items I decide to carry in it!.

For the holidays, I made 6 Santa’s Belt Blankets for our adult children. Each used 9 skeins of Cranberry, one skein of Mustard and one skein of Charcoal — all Lions Brand Cozy Wool Thick and Quick. that’s 66 skeins of yarn.

This yarn was easy to work with, crocheted nicely and created beautiful afghans that are nice and warm. I loved how it looked and felt with a half-double crochet stitch. Everyone should try this yarn.

It’s so much fun to work with.

My 8yo used this bright red Cozy Wool yarn for felting Christmas ornaments (simple balls, made with soap and hot water). She was beyond thrilled with how easy it was to create something neat with this yarn.

It pulled apart easily and was just as simple to use as roving. She asked me if we could get more in the same color so she can knit a scarf with it. Two thumbs up. It’s wonderfully soft and the weight of the yarn has a nice feel to it.

This super chunky yarn is lovely to work with! It was my go-to choice for an easy blanket pattern and it knitted up super quick. The price of Cozy Wool is within reason for a project as large as a blanket and the quality of the yarn is compatible with giving the knitted object as a gift.

You can’t lose with this yarn for any project that calls for super chunky yarn! Michael’s will ship to your door, which is a plus during the winter months when I want to knit up something and not have to travel out to get yarn to do it!.

I didn’t buy this yarn on this site because I didn’t know about yarn. com (and their fabulous WEBS discount) at the time of purchase, but this is the most disappointing yarn I’ve ever used (and I’ve done a lot of knitting).

I bought this to make a sweater for someone for Christmas because they requested this type of yarn. For a sweater that cost maybe 4 times what I normally pay for yarn, I now have a sweater that looks ready for the thrift shop before it’s even worn.

There are fibers like straw that I had to pull out as I was knitting, the finished sweater is nappy all over and already pilling. It looks worn and tired, I am so disappointed. I will never, ever knit anything again with this yarn, I don’t even want to keep the leftover barely used ball that I have left to make a hat.

I am sooo very disappointed in this yarn! I have felted MANY purses, bags, bowls and know what to look for in yarn. This did not say it’s super-washed although its soft. I used a Size 15 needles as suggested on the cover.

I felted this purse in my agitator washing machine with 2 towels for 4 cycles. Added boiling hot water from the beginning and nothing! Added a pair of jeans which did bleed a little into my cream yarn but at that point what did I have to lose.

Absolutely no felting whatsoever. I am calling the company tomorrow to get my $$ back and return the other skeins I bought.

This was my first time purchasing Big Wool from Rowan, and my first yarn ever from Rowan! I was looking for a more cost effective alternative to Crazy Sexy Wool, and I have to say, I am SO in love with Big Wool! It has lovely volume, knits up lovely, and doesn’t pill up in the process of knitting.

While I do love the over-the-top squish and voluminous effect of a single-ply super bulky, I have been shocked by just how much I LOVE this 3-ply Big Wool! It is also very lightweight for a super bulky, which I really love.

I would absolutely purchase Big Wool again, and based off this experience look forward to purchasing different types of yarn from Rowan.

I recently purchase 8 skeins of this yarn to make Chemo caps for my local hospital’s Oncology. They worked up into beautiful, gorgeous soft caps. I am now using the same yarn to make cradles for Bridget’s cradles which are distributed though out the U.

S. Volunteers of the entire USA are making the cradles which are given to hospitals for the 2nd trimester miscarriage infants. The baby is placed in the cradle and given to the family to spend time grieving with their infant that didn’t make it.

We also do prayer squares for families of 1st and 3rd trimester infants that were also miscarried. This brand of yarn is absolutely phenomenal to work with.

I started using this yarn a couple of years ago and it washes so nicely. It looks brand new after many washings. The only negative is that many of the yarns have a knot in the middle of the skein. It would also be nice if they offered skeins up to 400 or more yards for blankets.

This is the only acrylic yarn I will buy because it washes so well but I ended up using a different yarn with more yardage to knit projects that use up to 2100 yards. This yarn is only 208 yards and it would take 10-12 skeins to finish the blanket so I switched to a wool and only needed 4 skeins.

At church we make a blanket for each graduating senior high student as they transition off to college. We give these to let each person know that they go with our prayers, thoughts and to remind them that no matter how far or near, they are always a part of our church family.

In the past we used another brand yarn. Most of us did not enjoy working with that yarn and discovered it didn’t hold up as well as expected. This yarn is truly soft on the hands. It washes and dries so well.

It retains it’s shape and color. Great yardage. I’ve come across just one split strand in 6 skeins. Hardly an issue. Highly recommend this yarn for any project requiring acrylic. My 4 stars instead of 5 is only because it is not a merino wool.

so, for an acrylic, it is perfect. the best of all acrylics. Kudos to Premiere and Deborah Norville!.

Plymouth Encore worsted yarn is my favorite yarn for knitting my hooded baby sweaters because it has the the warmth, softness and springiness of wool without needing special care in the wash. It contains 75% acrylic, 25% wool and is machine washable and dryable, which is important for busy babies.

I love the way it feels in my hands while I’m knitting, and have had no trouble with the stitches splitting. I have tried other yarn for these sweaters (I’ve made over seventy of them. ) but I always come back to Plymouth 75% acrylic, 25% wool.

The tweed, variegated, and “Coffebeenz” Plymouth yarns with the same fiber content share the same good qualities as the Encore. I highly recommend Plymouth yarn for something that needs to be soft, warm, cuddly and washable.

Friendly to the crafter, friendly to the wearer Plymouth Encore is a high-quality yarn that wears like iron. Projects made from Encore tend to stay looking like new decades after they are made. It is the perfect blend of 25% wool and 75% acrylic, where there is just enough wool for warmth and springiness, but a very soft acrylic which makes for great manageability.

It can take a few froggings and not stick to itself and resist unraveling like some all-wool yarns, and it maintains its overall springiness longer than many other acrylics. Pilling doesn’t tend to be nearly as much of an issue as other similar yarns I’ve used.

As someone who has used this product in various projects (mainly sweaters and afghans), and feels the itch of some wool yarns, I can honestly say I have not experienced itching with Plymouth Encore. It’s the yarn I make my own kid’s and his friends’ dorm afghans out of because I know they can take spills and other abuse, withstand machine wash and dry, and come out looking like new.

VERY SOFT yarn, seems to be spun worsted so I don’t expect a lot of pills even though it is merino. I LOVE working with it. The color is a little darker than I thought it would be but it is lovely and changes depending on the light! The only thing I would change about this yarn it to make the skeins longer so I don’t have so many joins in my lovely soft snuggly sweater.

I am only rating this as a 4 because I ha vent ha a chance to knit with it yet. I have to confess I bought this because the name of this yarn is only one letter different from my name. lIt has a beautiful feel to it and a lovely texture.

It is in my queue of projects. can’t wait!.

I knit a sweater for my teen aged son. The yarn is soft, had no knots, wasn’t splitty, and made for beautiful cables and stitch definition. He took the sweater on an extended backpacking trip and it held up well.

Oh my! I love this wool. This is the first time I have used it, but it is so soft and knits up really quickly and lovely. I’m making a shawl with it. Needs more patterns for this yarn. I want to knit with it all the time now!! x x.

The way the wool is wound is unhelpful. The easy start label means you are supposed to take the wool from the inside. It doesn’t work and the wool gets in a tangle and takes ages to sort. If it is started in the usual wat, from the outside, it works much better.

The color of the yarn is excellent. I gave this three stars because there seems to be less wool content and more acrylic and nylon, which makes knitting a garment a bit more difficult, especially a purl stitch knit front and back.

It really aggravates the tendonitis in my thumb because of the lack of looseness that a wool yarn would give me. For this reason, I do not plan on purchasing any more of this particular yarn content.

Love the Berroco Vintage Colors yarn I recently ordered to finish a project & loved the ad hoc coupon for free shipping that popped up while I was ordering. Berroco made it hard to find the colorway I needed, though, because they apparently changed color number 5214 from ‘Old Jeans’ to ‘Kiwi’ or visa versa.

Thank goodness Alpaca Direct had all the info I needed to figure out the change & order the color I wanted. Trouble is that even though this is a variegated colorway, the dye lots have changed dramatically.

When the two hanks I ordered from Alpaca Direct weren’t a great match, I found someone on Ravelry with a dye lot that was just two digits off from the one I was using for my cardigan. The owner of the yarn was kind enough to sell it to me, but it was dyed more like my recent online purchase than the dye lot I originally bought.

I am astounded that Berroco changed the color so dramatically & used the same color number to apply to two vastly different colors. That’s a complaint against Berroco, not Alpaca Direct. And the bottom line is, I love the yarn regardless.

The yarn is beautiful, but Alpaca Direct is worth raving over! I had purchased 6 skeins in December when it went on sale. When I found a pattern I wanted to make, it required 2 more skeins. I ordered them from Alpaca Direct.

and asked in the note if they could match the dye lot. When I received the 2 skeins, both were the same dye lot as my first order! Thank you!.

Will never purchase this yarn again. Available in nice range of colors. Purchased 8 different ones to use for a crochet along practice. In over 50 years of knitting and crocheting, this is the worst yarn I have ever used.

There is much variation from skein to skein or perhaps by color. Biggest problem is the yarn splits terribly. This is well documented on other sites on the web I wish I had consulted. Thickness of the overall yarn or wraps per inch varied from skein to skein.

At least 1 was considerably thinner than the others. I always rewind my yarn so I don’t have surprises while working. 3 of the skeins had areas of unusable flaws. I did not return yarn because I rewound it and was impatient to meet a deadline.

This was used for a infinity scarf – I personally love the rustic texture (the site says some people say it is scratchy, but it works beautifully for an outdoorsy, country sort of project). worked great for the crunchy style of cow/scarf – gives it lovely body and not too drapey.

Also, the colors of this Lopi brand are always spectacular, vibrant, and do not ever show any fading. I will use this yarn again.

This is beautiful yarn for the Minnesota’s winters. Made a beautiful Nordic ski sweater from pure 100% Islandic sheep wool. Used 4 different colors. The yarn is bulky, easy to handle and knits fast. I always liked Lopi – good quality.

I have a fondness for this yarn, stitch definition is great. I make many items and trims using this yarn

TranslateShow in original languageHeute kam meine Easy Care Wolle. Sie ist super weich und ich bin ganz happy. Die Farben sind wunderschön, ich hab mi 067 Yellow und 081 Lemon bestellt. Daraus mache ich einen gehäkelten und einen gestrickten Pulli.

Ich weis noch nicht ob ich die Farben mische oder einfarbig verarbeite. Ich hab mir auch noch von Unicorn Happy 03 dazu gekauft, das kann ich sehr schön mit beiden Farben mischen. Die Garne sind so super schön und ich hab mir gleich noch andere Farben bestellt.

TranslateShow in original languageEine Jacke in Waffelmuster gestrickt in den Farben 154 und 152 von Easy care Big. Die Qualität ist 1a. Selbst bei Wind hält sie schön warm. Der Nachteil für mich? Ich bin auf der Haut eher empfindlich und es krabbelt etwas am Hals wenn ich die Jacke anhabe.

Ansonsten habe ich bsolut nicht anzumerken. Preis-Leistung einwandfrei, Lieferung fix und Verpackung angemessen. Vielen lieben dank.

Die Farben wie abgebildet, die Wolle sehr weich und leicht zu stricken. und die Hälfte gespart. Also gibt es noch einen Schal in Blautönen 😀. Gerne wieder Easy Care und auf jeden Fall eine Kaufempfehlung 👍.
