20 Best Youth Recurve Bow (2022 Updated)

This was the first bow, that I bought in a long time. It fits the arrows nicely. It also shoots nice and there’s no hard pool. And it’s easily fits in small space. It is Light weight it’s not heavy weighted and it’s not confusing like the other bows.

it doesn’t have all those gears and things you have to watch out for. I would highly recommend this bow if this is your first time or if you are looking to upgrade for the kids.

I have been using several of these for years on a public trial course at fairs. each gets used for literally 200-300 shots on any given day. They take great abuse and keep on going. They have outlasted much pricier bows and many many strings.

We got our kids some of the Bear Archery beginners bows from Academy, We enrolled them in beginners lessons and they asked me to get a bow to go out in the yard and practice with them. I had been researching bows to upgrade for them and came across the PSE Snake.

I was surprised to see that it worked well for myself and my 9 yo twins. I am able to get some zip on it and they were able to get their arrows on target.

I was So excited for this to arrive and it finally came yesterday! I opened The box and found most of the instructions in 5 languages, however, it was not fully comprehensive and didn’t give proper information regarding assembly.

I finally put it together (and have extra parts) but it’s missing an essential part – the bar where you rest the arrow. The arrows are kinda cheap too but hey! It was only $50! Also, it’s very large and a bit heavy.

I’m 5’4, 120lbs and I have issues holding it up, pointing and shooting. Great for some cheap fun, but not recommended if you’re tryna be Hawkeye during c-19.

We purchased the first of this bow, from Walmart, as a gift for my daughter several years ago. It was of an appropriate size and draw weight that she could manipulate it at 8 years old. Our neighbor was an elderly Navajo/Ute Indian who took an interest in my daughter’s bow activity and taught her how to shoot it.

It was a catalyst for a great learning relationship between the two and our cultures. After the gentleman died a couple of years ago, the bow sat idle for about a year. When my daughter decided to resume using it, it snapped in the middle of one of the bow halves, not at a joining point.

She was heartbroken, given the relationship tied to that bow. We thought we would find a used one for a spare part on eBay, but to no avail. This led us to purchase another from Walmart this Christmas.

When it arrived, my daughter chose to display the original one in her room, rather than repair it, as a remembrance. As we were not certain of the strength of the remainder of the bow, it was likely a wise choice.

She would use the new one for her bow activities.

I am a 19 year old girl who was interested in learning archery after watching The Hunger Games. I am 5’4” and 102. 5 lbs and this bow is perfect for me. It is a little hard to draw since I am not very athletic, but I am sure if I work at it, it will get easier.

This bow is awesome and exceeded my expectations. First of all, it is beautiful. It looks very sturdy, and I like how it is all black and not brightly colored like most of the other youth bows. I also love the shape.

Just so you know, it is a recurve, even though the product says it’s a longbow. I looked around a lot to find a good youth recurve bow and was disappointed in all of them but this one. It is well worth the $34.

The bow itself is very high quality and seems durable. The bow string is actually a real bow string. The only thing is the accessories. They are really cheap, even the arrows. The first arrow I shot got broken, with the nock shattering to pieces.

They also seem cheaply glued, so I definitely recommend buying other arrows (they should be 26″). Don’t worry about any of the add-ons to the bow (sight, arrow rest, quiver, etc) because they would make the bow too heavy and bulky.

The finger tabs don’t stay put and almost caused me to let go prematurely. The arm guard fits me, but it didn’t help me when the string slapped my upper arm. Overall, I definitely recommend this bow to any beginner, as it is of excellent quality and looks amazing, just like Katniss’s bow in the Quarter Quell! Wonderful bow.

I bought this as a birthday gift for my 7 year old and he loves it! I wanted a quality recurve that he can grow with. I purchased the 15 pound bow and could have probably gone the 20 pound. The bow has replaceable limbs, so I can always upgrade those in the future.

PSE always makes great products and they did not disappoint with this bow.

Both the upper and lower plastic limb pockets were cracked upon arrival. The plastic pockets are secured to the bow by 2 Phillips head screws and it looks one screw on each limb was overtightened at the factory.

I am going to exchange the bow and try again. This is my second bow of this model, my first is a 20# model and it has lasted well over 10 years with no problems so I am hoping this is just a fluke.

Nice little bow that can be upgraded with stronger limbs as the archer becomes stronger. Good balance and feel in the hand. Beautiful Gloss White limbs against the wood riser looks absolutely awesome.

Only negative is they didn’t spend much time prepping and clearing the wood riser. It is full of pits and a couple places the clear coat sagged. No big deal, just cosmetic. A great beginners bow or child’s bow.

Not a toy plastic like most, but a real wood made bow with the takedown and replaceable limbs. This is the 3rd bow purchased for our daughter, just wish I had found this bow in the 15# pull before I wasted the money on the other two plastic ones that are near toys.

Perfect first bow for my son. Quality is nice, shoots very smooth and straight. I’d recommend for anyone wanting to share the archery experience with their children. Quality is nice, I have no complaints about this bow.

Actual draw back was measured at 17lbs, not 20lbs. But in our case that was probably better anyway.

Ive had a few recurve bows and these are some of the better ones. Nice sturdy construction, grip feels good everything is smooth and has a great finish quality. Its no exotic wood display piece but definitely a good looking and extremely functional bow.

Way better than I thought it would be. Very good quality bow for practice, and nice quiver and great carbon arrows. If you are looking for a target practice bow this is it!!!!!

We got ours and every time my son and I tried to shoot, the arrows would get caught in the string and go straight to the ground, they were going nowhere. Another issue is the tension on the string is not tight enough at all.

We were ready to return it but decided to look and see if there was anything we could do to make it better, if your willing to do that also, you’ll get better results. Here is what we did, tightened the string tremendously but looping the ends through one another several times, then attaching them back,now it goes over 25 yards easy, then we got better arrows.

I highly recommend getting your own arrows, makes a huge difference too. Now its a pretty decent bow. I don’t know if they will all have the same problems as ours did, but if you get one and it does, try what we did, instead of going through the hassle of a return.

This is a pretty well made bow for the price and a good introduction to archery for a child, perhaps six to twelve. It is certainly not a power-house of a bow and only good for about a ten yard range.

With a 20lb pull it may be a struggle for a younger archer and yet too light as a child grows older. The accessories are adequate but would recommend buying additional arrows at the time of purchase.

All in all I’d give this bow a 9 out of 10 with the caveat that it is a child’s bow made for a youth entry level shooter. Also keep in mind that despite the lack of power this bow is not a toy and capable of serious injury if not used with adult supervision.

I bought this bow for my 12 year old granddaughter for her birthday. I was concerned that it might be too heavy for her to draw but she handles it fine. The only thing I was disappointed in was that it didn’t come with a couple of arrows.

Not a big deal, purchased some good quality arrows for her but just know unlike some youth bows, you only get the bow, no accessories. Good quality bow that can be used for years.

Grandson and I shot it ,I was hard to draw. He shot it a few times and went back to the 20# pse razor. I would say buy a better bow ,for a little more money you will have more fun shooting. Now it is rugged, and I can see why the camps would get them.

I think I could drive a tractor over it and pick up and shoot it all day. I little patience , I could get better at it. My grandson 10 liked the power of it. But he didn’t like the effort it took to draw it back.

Like the bow, daughter shot it a bunch. Not good when she over drew an arrow and it went against the riser and bent. Up to 28″ draw length bow package should come with arrows longer than 26″ (27″ to end of the tip).

I bought this a month ago and I’m so happy that I did! The bow feels extremely sturdy and When pulled all the way back the arrows are super accurate. You can buy a tiny arrow rest that just sticks to the wood right above the knocking spot so the fletching doesn’t hit the wood on a shot which allows you to knock your arrow completely straight.

It also comes with a spot to put a scope for height. Was hitting a piece of paper sized target from about 40 feet and I barely had to adjust for that much height at ALL the thing just shoots hard and straight its amazing.

Great bow. String also come’s with a tiny metal knocking spot so you know where to knock your arrow every time.

I purchased my Western Archery Edge Bow to help me rehab my shoulder replacement. I had to quit shooting for many years ,due to the shoulder injury. My new Edge is a 35#, 62″ recurve take down bow. The riser is a beautiful wood laminate with a nice matt finish.

The limbs are wood and fiberglass with reinforced tips so you can use high speed strings The first thing I did to the bow was to install a flipper arrow rest on it. I don’t shoot arrows with feathers off the shelf so the flipper rest was my first thought.

This bows shoots way above it’s price point. It pulls smooth and has no stacking at a 28″ draw length. I installed some string silencers that I made from a yarn ball and the bow is very quite with no hand shock at all.

I had to twist the new string about 30 times to get the proper tiller height. The instructions didn’t give a tiller range so I went to the web site for that info. I shoot instinctive and use a split finger, finger tab.

My arrows are carbon 29″ 500 spine. They shoot straight and very accurately through my Edge bow. I would highly recommend this bow to others. The only thing that I will change about the bow is the string.

Will be getting a Flemish replacement string soon.

This bow is beautifully constructed, breaks down small enough to fit into a backpack and shoot very well. It’s a great entry level recurve bow that even lifelong archers will appreciate. It’s available in higher draw weights allowing one to hunt even the biggest north American game with this bow.

It is essentially a rebranded samick sage wich has been held in high regard for a couple years now. I highly recommend this product. It’s an excellent quality recurve bow at an excellent price.

I’ve been into archery for 40yrs (I hunt probably 150 days a year. seriously), and this bow is all around excellent. This bow,and all October Mountain bows,are actually rebranded Samick bows. Samick is a solid name in traditional archery.

That said,this bow is solid,very well built,and shoots as good as my bows costing close to $800. The riser is beautiful, the limbs can be changed out to any weight you want,its just a solid bow,made for everyone from beginners to pro shooters.

That said,you can save $100 because everywhere else they are $149. Is the bow worth more? Absolutely! This bow shoots as good as a $1200 Bob Lee custom.

I only just received this bow and thought I’d send in a review right away. The first thing I noticed after opening the box and assembling is the excellent workmanship. Not a single blemish on the limbs or riser.

The riser itself is beautifully made and blended with nice maple. The grip fits my hand perfectly. After firing a few arrows last night, the bow draws smooth and is surprisingly quiet. There is a lot of quality packed into what some consider an entry level hunting recurve.

I’m very impressed and would recommend this bow to anyone. novice to experienced.

My boys have only shot with compounds for about 6 years now. With that being said their now 15 & 16 years old. This was their first recurve, of course they shot a few others just playing around with their friends for fun.

So we bought one just for fun. Although; this was a great first bow to buy. Definitely well made. We bought the 40lb I don’t think you would regret buying this one. We paid I think about $80. 00 shipping included for the new bow.

They’ve owed several other compounds mainly Hoyt & Bear, I would rate this of the same quality.

The bow itself is a very nice bow for a young beginner. One of the two arrows had a bent “feather” making it not good for target shooting. Luckily I had purchased three extra arrows, so my granddaughters could still enjoy their archery.

The quiver, arm protector and finger protector are very cheaply made and not very useful for someone seriously interested in archery. I gave the set an overall rating of good because I was mainly interested in a decent introductory bow and knew I could get a decent quiver, more arrows, and arm and finger protectors later if the girls are truly interested in pursuing archery.

I also knew I would need more than two arrows so had planned to buy more anyhow. The bow itself is just what I wanted.

My Son is 8 and received this Bow for Christmas. He is enjoying it very much. It has enough tenacity for his strength to get a full pull from the bow. Its not too big and the quality of the Bow composite is high in quality.

Negatives are they shouldnt bother with the extra pieces that come with it like the piece used to draw the string back because its very wimpy and not very adaptable for the user. Instead they should put the money into either another arrow or add the knock for where the arrow goes on the string.

I will need to get this installed because my son is having a tough time getting to know where the middle of the string is wher drawing an arrow. Overall very satisfied with the product for the money.

Perfect size and draw weight for recurve bare bow target archery. At 28# draw, it is suitable for young teens through adults to shoot comfortably for long sessions. Love it and purchased two more for the family.

Price was very reasonable.

Bow was 28lb draw weight as advertised. Came disassembled in a box, and included the allen key to assemble it. Definitely a good buy and great for a new archer or just someone looking to have fun.

I am a returning archer. I grew up with archery and have had many different bows. I got this bow to come home to archery and possibly use it to bag a tom this spring. I got the #45. Finish is good. It looks really good.

The limbs fit well. It shoots great. As mentioned in one review, it is a little loud out of the box. Once I added string, riser and limb damps, it shoots quietly. The sound is like a whisper now. I also added a sight.

A quiver can also be added if that is your preference. Honestly, I am impressed with this bow at this price point.

Well don’t let either give you pause. I made a flemish string for it. Top that with beaver hair silencers and you have a game killing weapon.

Drop shipped directly from PSE. Opened PSE box pulled out bow loaded in original plastic display box. Original plastic box was falling apart. Riser, limbs, sight, string, stringer were not in the original positions within the box.

While arrows and quiver were in original places, the turkey feathers on one of the arrows was deformed and pealing of the shaft because of the shift in other contents. I will assume that the shifting and damage to the arrow was the result of shipping.

During use, the nock stays attached to the string while the arrow is sent down range. Overall, the entire set up feels like a toy.

Can’t adjust draw length or draw weight, but the marketing material suggests you can. It even has a chart on the back suggesting draw length depending on the height of the child?! What’s the point, because it isn’t adjustable? Looks like a nice little bow.

It actually does have let off, but at my child’s DL, there won’t be any. I just wish Bear actually made clear in their promotional material that it isn’t adjustable from 6-15lb and that the draw length is also not adjustable.

It is basically a recurve bow unless your DL is long enough to get to the let off and wall!.

the kit comes with an arrow rest that has a sticky pad on the back and applied to the bow. when I first realized the texture of the bow I knew this adhesive pad would not stick long. especially after a 7yo gets his first bow on Christmas morning and itching to sling some arrows.

Same day, As bow was set up, safety instructions to 7yo, shooting and technique instructions, all by instructor dad, 30 min outside in kids hands,” dad the thingy came off. ” sure enough the plastic adhesive arrow rest came off.

not once but three times and dad had to help most Christmas morning searching the grass for small part, then got wise to add super glue, time to dry and no bueno. twice it has come off. Bear??? Not happy to spend my Christmas Day fixing a faulty piece that is the key to the bow and needed better brainstorming on how to keep the small piece from coming off.

Just sayin. Explain it to my kid though. Now I’m making a phone call.

My 6yr old daughter is using this bow, and the draw weight and length are just right for her. Definitely works to get kids practice the basics and punching holes in a couple layers of cardboard at 10 yards, but this bow with the included arrows won’t penetrate a standard archery target, which I suppose does make it a lot safer.

The included adhesive rest fell off after the first arrow, so expect to have to buy a better one. For the $50 CAD I paid, it does the trick for now, and is a lot less expensive then a proper youth compound adjustable down to her draw weight and length, so less financial risk if she decides she doesn’t like the sport.

I was excited about getting back into shooting archery after 20 years But I wanted to challenge myself. So I decided traditional archery was what I was looking for. I decided the bear super grizzly recurve 50# was the bow for me.

After receiving it I went right to shooting it. Shoots smooth and pretty quiet. 50# might be a bit heavy for a beginner like me to start with but I am getting better after a few weeks. I’m excited to see where this takes me shooting again.

I really like the smooth clean look of the bow. Excellent craftsmanship. Great feel in the hand.

I have been into traditional archery for about 10 years now. I have shot a bunch of different recurves, both borrowed from friends and of my personal collection. I’ve owned my Super Grizzly for about 6 years now, 55#.

I do not claim to be an expert, just a guy with a little experience with different bows. I am comparing this bow to to the ones I’ve shot, which are Bear Grizzly, Bear Kodiak, Bear Kodiak Magnum (I do not recommend this one for guys with 30″ draws), Samick Sage, PSE Coyote, and a Hoyt take down (don’t remember the model, it was a friend’s).

Compared to the rest, the Bear Super Grizzly felt the smoothest to draw, very quiet when tuned, durable, accurate, and the finish wares well and reveals a beautiful finish. Specific comparisons: -The Bear Grizzly: The Super Grizzly is more forgiving and smoother on the draw.

My Old Grizzly suffered a little limb twist in the same time and conditions that I have owned my Super Grizzly. I think the glass on the belly of the Super Griz helps prevent this also. It’s still as straight as it was out of the box.

-Bear Kodiak: While the Kodiak’s added length provided a more comfortable draw hand, it did not feel as fast or as smooth as my Super Grizzly. -Bear Kodiak Magnum: WAAAAAAY too short for guys with longer draw lengths.

Not a fan at all. -Samick and PSE Coyote: These two are not built to the same quality control, nor fit and finish. Again, not as smooth and comfortable as the Super Griz. I felt a big difference in quality when shooting.

-My buddy’s Hoyt: A bigger price tag for what, to me, boils down to high speed looking aesthetics. The Hoyt shot well and comfortably enough, but not twice the price tag worth.

This is my fourth Fred Bear bow and it was the most expensive. I am comparing it to a Grizzly, AuSable, and Montana. Now I know why the 59′ Kodiak is the most expensive of the four. It is a true gem of a bow.

Light weight, beautifully crafted, a pleasure to shoot, fast, and hard hitting. I suspect this will prove to be my favorite. Five thumbs up for Fred Bear Archery for bringing back this classic recurve.

This bow has no hand shock and is really quite. Even before I put string silencers and Velcro on the string grooves. Even with arrows that were a little bit on the light side. I did buy a new string to replace the one that came with it since I learned from the bear grizzly that the strings are not that good.

I think they changed the strings a bit since but I am not sure if it is better (switched it since it was small for my arrow nocks well). I don’t have arrows built for it yet so nothing is tuned. I cannot wait to get it set up.

I think it is much nicer looking than expected. It has a much lighter colour finish than what you see in the picture of it.

I have been shooting since I could walk but took a 45 year break. 63 now so it’s apparently like riding a bike. Photo is not representative of my normal 12 arrow ends. My SK is a #55, my next will be a 60 through TRA.

I also have the original Kodiak in a #45, it’s lighter, prettier and quieter but the grip is a little. dainty. Full disclosure: I’ve tried a shot or two with other bows but basically have always stood behind Fred Bear.

There may be better bows but I stand behind Fred Bear, the man. This is a man’s bow designed and shot by the man himself.

Light weight, nice fitting bow. String silencers and hair rest recommended. I bought 45#. I don’t use the leather grip that came with bow. Aim well and use good form. Bow is very fast and unforgiving.

Know how much draw weight you can safely handle. Slightly easier to draw than a recurve. Very well made and fun to shoot. Will handle fast flight but I switched B55 Dacron. Love this bow.

I bought this bow about 6-7 months ago, being very new to archery. I shot it for a while and after going to archery classes and learning more about the sport 2 things have become apparent: the bow might now have been meant to shoot off an arrow rest, and the bow is not centered.

After giving my bow to a archery pro shop we determined that anything other than shooting from the shelf is going to put the arrow left of wherever you’re aiming. It’s just the way the bow was designed or manufactured.

Not being able to shoot from a rest is a bummer but not being able to have your arrows go where you want them to is worse. My opinion is if you want to start archery this is perfect. Something you can get the basics down with and wont be afraid of beating up.

But you’re going to need to upgrade if precision is of importance.

Great starter bow, reliable and solid. Riser and limbs are a great value. The bowstring leaves a lot to be desired otherwise this would be a 5 star review. I replaced it with a stick 16 strand and am getting very tight clusters consistently at 30 meters.

For the price, this is a decent bow to learn the basics of target archery. However I bought a right handed version and the arrow rest is on the left side of the bow. Shooting from the inside of the bow is a modern archery concept and while not inherently bad, it does make the bow cumbersome.

If the only thing you want to do is shoot still targets you should be fine, but any kind of advanced archery skills (moving while shooting, riding while shooting) will require a different bow. Not sure what kind of heathen would WANT to shoot in this clunky and cumbersome manner but this bow is capable of hitting still targets.

Just got. Feels nice in the hand. smooth draw and a straight shooter. Can’t explain why it so quite but it is. Not going to add silencers Only con. is the black lines on the riser to simulate separate glued wood pieces.

Makes it look really cheap but is really a nice looking bow. Came in flawless condition.

This bow is amazing for beginners or experts. Priced really well for a beginner. It is constructed really well and the limbs are holding up really well. You just need to make sure your brace height is set properly to allow less wear on the limbs.

Overall a really great bow. Would recommend to anyone starting out with traditional archery.

I got this bow as a gift 5 or so years ago. I’ve shot hundreds of arrows through it, so I suppose it held up well enough. I’m a little disappointed because the bottom limb snapped today without cause (i.

e. I didn’t overdraw, etc. ). If OMP offered a 60# bow, I might go for that.

Overall 3 start, buy 4 stars for the bow alone. Did not include instructions on putting the bow together so we did not know which arm, or string end, went to the upper and lower riser. There is no explanation what the holes in the Riser are for.

The case, quiver, arm guard are “ok” for beginner use but very basic. The bow stringer is very useful once adjusted for the archers height. Suggest you order more targets and get a hay bale (or order a quality target) for longer use.

1 target lasts a day.

My son was thrilled that Santa brought the bow and arrows he’d put on his list. We went out for target practice Christmas afternoon and within 20 minutes, two of the three arrows were useless. The nocks, the slotted plastic tips at end of the arrows that snap onto the string and hold the arrow in position, were brokwn off.

I’m not sure whether to return the whole kit at this point. The nocks should be threaded and replacable, they are not. The bow is beautiful and appears to be sturdy but I wouldn’t recommend this purchase.

My daughter, 12 years old & average build, received this as a Christmas gift. She had taken a few archery day camps and wanted to keep practicing. We went to a large national chain store, geared more to adult hunters, and they outfitted her with a 62″ 30 lb.

bow that was simply too hard for her to repetitively pull. Let’s just say, after having spent all her energy on the first 3-4 arrows, it’s unnerving to be standing next to a shaky 12 year old with an arrow nocked, drawn 4/5 the way back, and unable to hold the pointy end steady.

Fortuitously an LLBean email highlighting this archery set hit my inbox. I bought her the 20# draw bow and 2 extra sets of arrows. This is perfect! Far more comfortable, she can now focus on form and accuracy and really enjoys having the extra arrows so that she can shoot more and easter-egg hunt arrows less.

The day camps run about 4 hours and she’s easily able to shoot the entire time with this 20# draw. Quality – for a starter set, this is excellent! Having spent a few hours in that large national chain store, I can attest that this set is the equal of their midrange equipment and appreciably less expensive (anecdotally about 25-30% less).

Function – except the quiver, all aspects of this set are excellent. The recurve bow is quite well made and its 3 parts are easily assembled. Stringing the bow is a bit tricky but after a few tries my daughter now is an expert.

At the last archery day camp she was helping the other archers string their bows. The case is especially nice, and provides the necessary storage for the set and makes traveling back-n-forth to camp quite easy.

The arrows are great practice arrows but with just 3 of them it quickly becomes tedious retrieving them. So I bought 2 additional sets (6 arrows per set). Improvements – as I alluded to, the quiver is lacking primarily due to its shortness.

The arrows easily topple out of it. NOT A BIG DEAL for sure, I just wanted to explain my earlier comment. Several reviewers indicate that their archer quickly outgrew this set. I too was worried about that until I learned a bit more about how recurve bows work.

Now I would argue that jumping from this set to one that has 50% greater draw (eg. 29lb) isn’t necessary for “tweens” or younger teens. With a recurve bow, as kids grow and their draw length increases (the distance from outstretched hand holding bow to fingers pulling the string), the draw weight naturally increases because the archer just simply pulls the string back further to accommodate their growing bodies.

This bow, although it says 20lb, simply will give / flex a little more to accommodate the increased draw length. The result is the archer will be able to pull to say 24-26 lbs on this same bow, because it’s a recurve bow, all the while maintaining excellent control in both form and accuracy.

Alternatively, if you like living on the edge, your archer could quickly jump to that heavier 29 lbs and spend more time making you nervous with that shaky pointy end. For those with mid teens or older, or younger kids that are particular strong, the 29 lb is probably the way to go all for the same reasons I mentioned above.

While your archer may only pull, say for example 26 lbs comfortably, then the larger bow would simply accommodate that by flexing less. If your archer stays within their draw weight comfort zone and doesn’t try to over pull, then they’ll still be able to focus on form and accuracy.

So why didn’t I leave my 12 year old archer with the 30 lb bow? She wasn’t able to get the bow to flex enough that the arrow would make it to the target (about 30′ away) with enough force to penetrate the target.

She’s gotten much better with practice but consider how much more movement would result if I’d quickly jumped her up to the next size bow? My apologies for how long the video runs.
