20 Best Z Wave Switch (2022 Updated)

The GE Z Wave if a nice solution to a real problem and adds convenienience to my life. While this gadget would serve a great purpose for many high amp electrical uses, such as for sceduling and operating a swimming pool or outdoor pond pump, I chose to use it to supply power to my backyard shed, which controls inside power as well as surrounding backyard lighting.

Now, with the smart wifi control ability, I can easily control functions from inside, for example, I can have the shed heater start up well ahead in cold weather, shortening the time I used to spend trudging out through the snow, starting heater and then coming back inside to wait for the building to heat up.

Also, along with timers, I have my inside lights come on ahead of my arrival and can choose to have power shut down from the comfort of my house. Being able to monitor power usage with the Z Wave is just an added bonus.

What a convenience!.

I had no clue what this box did or what it was. My husband is in construction and he told. me what this Z-Wave Plus Direct Wire Indoor/Outdoor Lighting Appliance Control Smart Switch is capable of doing.

Our house is an old house and has no smart plugs or appliances. Well let’s just say he hooked it up outside and it now controls our pool pump, water heater, washer and dryer. We also ordered an echo and my husband is having fun controlling everything.

Such a great item. It makes us feel so in control.

This product is very good I love how it ALEXA COMPATIBLE – REQUIRES AN ALEXA SUPPORTED HUB for voice control with Echo Products Requires a Z-Wave certified gateway. How it is Compatible with other Z-Wave certified Hubs.

Alex can turn the device on and off with my voice it can also hold up to 11,000 watts (277v. The product is tamper resistant to keep the wires secure and safe from weather , dirty or thing like that.

You can also use any time of smart device to control for Security resin and be able to use and control off your smartphone or laptop or tablet. It for indoor or outdoor use witch ever you prefer. I use mine inside my house to control the lights and other things in my house it great that I can put a timer on for when to shut off the lights ect.

Bought a number of these and their Jasco equivalents to connect to my Smarththings hub to control the lights via app and Alexa on echo dots. Evaluating these as a manual dimmer, these are very very good when compared to some Feit and Leviton LED dimmers I’ve tried.

The Feit dimmer from Costco was the worst; it suffered from an ill fitting wall plate that left gaps to the wall, ever so slight buzzing (even with Feit Led’s!), and it had power issues; dim it too low and you induce flicker or the light wont’ turn back on because the initial power draw is too low.

Using it required, dimming to a level that is satisfactory from both a output and power draw standpoint to make sure one can turn the lights on and off. The Leviton unit addressed all these shortcomings but at $20-30 was rather expensive even without z wave, some models are cheaper but none of them are what I would call cheap.

This GE or really Jasco unit strikes an excellent compromise on all fronts as a mechanical dimmer; no buzzing with Cree or Feit LED retrofits, dims smoothly with no power on/off issues. The only drawback as a mechanical dimmer is that there is no dedicated slider; you hold he up/down paddle as needed to get to desired light level.

The inclusion of Z wave is where this shines and the value proposition increases when compared to a $20-30 mechanical dimmer. With a smartthings hub, it’s now a dimmer, a timed switch, alarm signal, etc.

I have 3 generations of these in the house; early gen with no neutral wire, z wave with neutral wire, and now z wave plus. The latest gen supports scenes better but I haven’t quite explored in that direction yet so the only notable differences to me are in installation and dimming performance; the latter two have about equivalent performance while the early gen was easier to install due to one less wire it also doesn’t dim as low.

Given minimal cost differences, it makes sense to buy the latest gen for future functionality upgrades. From an install perspective, these are quite big and bulky but manageable. The contact points are clearly labeled (neutral, line, load, ground, remote) and makes me wish regular switches were labeled too but alas that is often not the case since there are a myriad of ways to wire them.

With a voltage meter in hand it should be easy to figure out the wires; colors are usually white is neutral, bare is ground, and black can be line or load. The voltage meter makes it easy to figure out and worth the $20 as part of your general toolbox; turn off breaker, pull switch out to expose wires, turn on breaker, set meter to detect 200V AC and touch one lead to ground and the other to either black line withe power on and whichever shows ~120V is the line wire aka “hot”.

Turn off the breaker and proceed to install safely. You’ll have quite a bit of wire and switch to cram back in so the flexible neutral white wire they pack in takes at least some of the pain out. All the contacts are push in screw type so no need to break out pliers to bend wire around the screw terminals.

easy to set up and easy to use. i prefer using the hub based devices because the i’d rather one unit go to my network and these communicate within it than having many devices individually connected to my wifi.

Almost every single switch in my house is smart, which when used in addition to sensors and lights makes for great convenience Hallways with motion sensors turn on when i walk by and linger on for a minute or so.

My front entrances lights up when teh door opens so guests can take shoes off without fumbling for a switch, certain lights dim after certain time so you aren’t blinded by late night walks to the kitchen or bathroom.

My room gradually gets brighter in addition to my alarms to ease me into waking up the possibilities are endless that being said i will ding it because the price is still ridiculously high. these have been out for a long time and you’d think they’d be more affordable.

its hard to convince someone to go smart when it can cost $40+ per room to make it a smart room.

We use this with Alexa which allows us to group all of our cafe lights. This switch ties our patio and patio cafe lights together. We have a dog that stays outside during the day, but in the winter it gets dark before we arrive home.

The ability to program these with Alexa to turn on at sunset is why we bought this. We have also grouped it with cafe lights in another area of the yard, so we can say, “turn on the outdoor lights” and our whole back yard is lit.

It did stop working once after a power outage, but I simply flipped the circuit breaker and it fired right back up with no issues. Love Smart Home electronics!.

We bought 6 of these when we remodeled our kitchen about 1 1/2 years ago. Loved them for a few months. Within about 6 months, two of them failed. When they failed, one was on and one was off. So we had one light we couldn’t use and one we couldn’t turn off.

The company replaced them but we had the cost of an electrician to install them. Since then, three more have gone out and we have just given up and replaced them with conventional switches. These are a great idea but they just don’t work for long.

I am using a pair of these switches and my SmartThings hub to provide 3-way switch functionality on a light fixture that is not wired for three way control but rather just a single switch controlling the light.

By installing one switch to replace the existing light control and the second switch simply connected to power and neutral in an existing electrical box in the location where I wanted remote control of the light fixture, I was able to create a “lighting automation” in SmartThings to have the wired switch “mirror” the remote switch, and now the pair work as if they were three-way switches wired to the light.

They work perfectly, and this is a real help to me.

The more I use this, the more I like it. I can easily use either the switch or my Google Home system to control it, but the small details really make it shine. It has a slow on/off that’s easy on the eyes, small “finder” LEDs when its off, and control indicators that disappear when not in use plus even more features available in the app.

If you have good Wi Fi coverage in the area the smart switch will be located, this is a good choice for remote operation without a bridge. The Lutron Caseta is limited to a 30 feet range from the required Caseta bridge.

Out of the five Decora Smart Switches in use at my home, only one would be within range of the Caseta system, the rest are up to 100 feet away. I did have some trouble updating the firmware. It can only be done through the Leviton Decora Smart Home app and the app wasn’t working.

I deleted the app, re-installed it, and that got it to work as it should. For light switch programming and manual operation, I use Apple’s “Home” app and it was very easy to set up. It does lack a “random” feature but has other programming options such as time of day using local sunset/sunrise and activating when a family member’s phone joins the home network after dark.

If you use a Decora Smart Switch in a 3 way light switch circuit, you need to purchase a coordinating or matching remote switch. Normal 3 way switches will not work for the other switches in a circuit with a Decora Smart Switch.

The “smart” switch is installed in the “line” switch box. That is the box that is supplied power by the breaker panel. The remote switch is located in the switch box referred to as the “load” in the installation instructions.

I prefer the this unit for the wifi setup vs the other style that uses its own communications system. Installation is easy. The switch is a little bulky so you will need to be careful when placing the excess conductor back in the electrical box.

Setup is very easy. Out of 6 units that I bought only one needed to be reset to restart the process. Make sure that you update the firmware to protect yourself from unwanted intrusion. Leviton’s app is easy to use and is fairly intuitive.

First off, this is a gadget. It is not 100% necessary in every home. But, if you even consider any home automation, this is the way to go. I am upgrading my home a couple at a time. The more I do, the betterr it is.

I am utilizing the Leviton family of smart switches and combining them with the power of Google Home/Google Assistant. No, from anywhere in my home (within earshot of a Google Home Speaker – I have 5 around the house) I can say “Hey Google, Turn on lights.

” Boom, all the lights with smart switches come on. I can say, turn on Master Bedroom, all the circuit in the master bedroom come on. I can say “Hey Google, Goodnight” All the lights turn off. The Leviton App allows you to set schedules to automate the lights, or you can use the app to turn them on or off remotely without using Google Assistant.

I am very happy with the quality, the switches blend in just like Decora switches. You do have to have a neutral (white wire) present in the switch box to work. Andy, if you have a 3-way circuit, you need a companion device (about $20) to make the circuit work.

So, I started off saying it is a gadget,and not necessary. until you install the first one, then it immediately becomes a necessity.

The Z-Wave switch is well constructed and extremely easy to install. The auto detection of the Load/Line is a nice feature giving the home owner the ability to install. The reduced width allows for flexibility when installing next to other switches in a multiple gang configuration.

The switch was compatible with my ADT Pulse system and connected seamlessly.

Direct one for one replacement of an existing conventional dimmer switch. Package comes with a short jumper wire to connect the new dimmer to the neutral wire in the electrical box. Once installed, connects easily to your exisiting Z-Wave hub, and integrates smoothly with Alexa.

I received the En Brighten Z wave plus in wall dinner and just love it. It was very easy to install and the directions are really great. It’s voice controlled and is compatible with Google Assistant or Alexa.

I love being able to control things remotely. I will be purchasing more if these in the near future.

As with all the Fibaro devices, this one works as advertised and is easy to use. There are a couple of errors in the supplied instructions though: – An “Info WARNING!” states that the Fibaro switch is set to operate with momentary switches by default.

This is contradicted by the configuration parameters section which states that the default for param 14 is 1 = toggle switch. My relay (version 2. 1) was definitely set to expect a toggle switch by default.

– The relay supports “auto off” which will automatically switch the relay off after a fixed period of time. The instructions suggest that the time should be entered in milliseconds and supports a range of values from 1-65535 which would be 0.

001 – 65. 535 seconds (just over a minute). My unit is definitely not in milliseconds though and is actually in deciseconds which gives a range of 0. 1 – 6553. 5 seconds (about 1 hour 49 minutes). I hope this saves you some head scratching!.

I have several of these running from a Raspberry PI / Domoticz software controller, and all are reliable. Each device has TWO switch inputs – one switches the internal relay, but the other is intended to send a message to another remote device.

As noted by others, these devices need a neutral. I have mine installed inside 26 mm pattress boxes next to the light fittings in the ceiling. The terminals are rather small, so it is prudent to use an external “chocolate block” connector to manage the mains / switch and lam connections using 1.

5 or 1. 0 sq mm cable as required. One final warning: the devices present a continuous (small) load across the lighting circuit: this will prevent an electrician from performing a circuit insulation test.

Like all Fibaro stuff, it’s easy to install and works very well – although it’s always a bit annoying that it appears as two devices in Vera. Remember these are no good for most 2-wire UK light switches.

You need access to a proper neutral not just the switched-live wire.

Been researching a lot on smart switches that work with Apple HomeKit. There are a handful of them that do work with HomeKit, but you need use their dedicated hub. Im not about that. Found these Leviton ones and bought one just to give it a shot.

Im really glad I did. Exactly what Ive been looking for. Install was simple, HomeKit setup was a breeze. I ended up buying another one for my other porch light. I know according to Apple that you can use an Apple TV (4th gen or 4K), an iPad, or a HomePod to setup as your HomeKit hub.

I highly suggest using an Apple TV. Ive never owned a HomePod so I cant vouch for that. But its much easier and the connection is better if you use an Apple TV as your hub instead of an iPad. Also suggest upgrading your wireless router.

Some of those routers you get from your ISP are junk, so your HomeKit will tend to show not responding.

I bought this switch to work with my Ring system. It connects easily and works well, just follow the setup instructions. The switch is great. The Ring software that I use is not that great. Ring allows you to turn it on and off, but you can’t schedule on/off hours or link it to an alarm even.

Not Leviton’s fault. I hope Ring upgrades their software to enable more control features.

I installed this switch for 3 locations. One with CFLs (3-way), one with LEDs (3-way) and one with LEDs. Installation is fine, only 1 more wire to take care of compared to conventional switch. (You must check whether you have the neutral wire! ) 3-way is more complicated as expected for a novice like me.

Connected to my Samsung Smartthings easily and I use Google Home to control them thru Smartthings. Works great! I kept seeing reviews that the switch has buzzing noise. So far I haven’t seen that. I suspect people are using the non-CFL/LED light bulbs, or non-dimmerable lightbulbs.

I also has no problem “shutting off” the LEDs like some comments. Highly recommend for anyone want to “smartize” the home with wiring DIY experience.

I bought this dimmer to use on a light socket. I found out after the fact that you should not use dimmer for wall outlets. But this device is rated very well and will work great as a dimmer for lights.

Unfortunately I had to return it but Walmart was excellent about the return. I highly recommend Walmart and this device if you use it for a dimmer instead of a socket Outlet.

Although it says it works with the IRIS hub, it does not. It will pair, but the hub says that it is uncertified and will not program. So although IRIS says it works with all zwave products and the box says it’s compatible with the IRIS hub, it is not.

Don’t waste hours of your time trying to connect it. As of 5/6/17,it does not work.

This product performs exactly as advertised. Set up is so simple and if you have added any smart products before, you will be up and running in 2 mins literally! I’m using my two outdoor plugs with my Smartthings hub and it interegrates seamlessly.

I bought the plugs to operate our outdoor Christmas lights and have had no problems. You just set it and forget it which is what I like. I’m already thinking about other things to control outside after the holidays.

The only drawback is that the plugs are really bulky which may turn off some people but I was able to put one of our porch chairs in front of the plug to hide it which worked out well. I definitely recommend these plugs for ease of use and integration.

Works like a charm. This is a zwave outdoor switch, ordered for automating outdoor Christmas lights , arrived just in time for the season. I have switched over from the clunky timers that used to go off at different times.

All my lights outdoors are synchronized now. Happy buyer :).

The product is built for outdoor locations like a covered patio, where it may get splashed with water/rain. As with all other GE Z-wave products, this paired quickly and easily to my Smartthings Hub.

Controlling the switch via the Smartthings app (automated, manual, etc) is a snap, but having a manual on/off button on the device is very handy.

As with many Fibaro modules (my manufacturer of choice for embedded switches), these units work well and are a joy to install. Although other people on here have found it hard to include, I actually found the process quite easy (with HomeSeer).

My only gripe is that I just cannot get it to report a change in instantaneous energy usage. Instead, I have to poll this device regularly to get an indication as to whether the attached device is drawing current or not.

I’ve tried just about everything to get this auto-reporting, but I just cannot get it working. It *MAY* be due to the fact that I’m typically driving low-energy LED lamps with this, and the change between 0 and 5W is not enough for it to auto-report.

But I don’t see that limitation listed anywhere, despite making it as sensitive as possible to changes in load. Considering I upgraded from the first gen or products from Fibaro to this, I was a little disappointed that I didn’t gain my automatic power usage reports.

I can work round it using polling, but that keeps my Z-wave network busier than it should be, all the time.

Fibaro Modules are always good, I use all mine (10+) through Smart Things that used to work really well, the new version not so good. looking to migrate it over to Apple Home or Fibaro Hub. I have used most versions of Fibaro modules including Ver1 & 2 of these RGBW controllers, on my LED lighting all over.

Great units.

Running RGBW IP65 LED strips. So far, they are working great. I have a small issue working out how to associate the two that I have but other than that they are providing a stable Z-Wave connection and have a large list of configurable.

Works fine on openhab although took me a sec about what channel to play with and how to set the options I wanted.

I am using the WallMote with a SmartThings hub, primarily to be able to control some iBlinds without having to open the SmartThings app on my phone. I have to say the WallMote is kind of fun to play around with.

In SmartThings, you use it as a trigger to cause whatever you want done to happen. There are 4 buttons and each can be either tapped once or tapped and held. So the device has 8 different possible triggers.

The default SmartThings device handler gives you the impression there can also be a “double pressed” trigger. But I could never get that to work. From web searches I made, it also appears that the WallMote supports up and down swiping.

But the default SmartThings device handler for the WallMote does not support that at all. That is disappointing. I would like to be able to use that to open or close a blind by 10%–something like that.

As it is, all I could really do is to either open a blind when it is closed or close it when it is open. Better than nothing but less than I would like.

I have a home automation system in my home (HomeSeer) and have about 80 percent of my lights controlled by Z-Wave devices, most are dimmable. Jasco and GE are the same company as best I can tell and I have a mixture of both in my home.

I purchased these new devices to extend my lighting automation further. Of all my devices, most of which have been in place for 5-6 years, I have only had one device that has gone bad and that was likely from a power surge that hit my home from the outside.

The quality of these devices is very good and works well with LED lights, as long as they are dimmable ones.

I think its a piece of junk. Its touted as a direct replacement for existing manual switch. However, if you install using existing screws you will destroy the smart switch. The reason, there is a design flaw in the smart switch which necessitates that one of the screws be shorter than the other.

If you replace with the normal manual switch screws one of them will penetrate too far into the smart switch and ruin it. What a piece of junk.

This Smart Switch works great and pairs with Ring Alarm. Only negative is that Ring Alarm doesn’t appear to support setting up an on/off schedule so you have to manually turn light on and off through app.

Also the toggle switch does not actually rest up and down when on and off. The toggle switch sits in the middle. Therefore it doesn’t quite match up with the non smart switch in the double gang box. Must have a neutral wire in your electrical switch box.
