20 Best Zero Tolerance Knife (2022 Updated)

Over the years I’ve collected high end knives from Japan, Germany, the U. S. and others. The Hast collection outperforms them all and I use the set almost exclusively now. I love the way they maintain sharpness, they are lovely to look at, and they handle beautifully with their one-piece design.

THIS model in particular has been the most comfortable for all-day use with noticeably less hand fatigue. I really love my purchase! * Proper care: Always hand wash knives. Use a honing steel in between uses.

Wipe off frequently as you prep, never let food dry & crust up your blade. After hand washing, use a clean towel to carefully dry, then either use a blade protector/cover or return your knife to its original box.

Lastly, take it in for regular professional sharpening.

It was time for an upgrade and this knife does not disappoint. It came recommended to me by a couple of other professional chefs and as I hone my home chef techniques this knife is perfect. Super sharp blade and the handle is beautifully crafted and ergonomic in design.

While I store it in a knife block I’m tempted to use a magnetic strip instead to showcase the knife blade’s gorgeous blade. I’m writing up a blog post of kitchen tools every home chef must have and this is one that’s definitely on that list.

Chopping and dicing is therapeutic for me. I received this 6” chef’s knife as a gift and am smitten with it! I couldn’t believe the ease of using it. The weight of the handle balances perfectly to give a secure firm hold.

It truly cuts like butter. This is my first knife of this kind of caliber and it’s stunning! I only wish that a protective sleeve came with it.

This knife was bought for my wife who wanted to carry a small knife around (like me). It is rather small which is great, but unfortunately unlike other Opinel’s; this one does not have a locking mechanism (i.

e. twist the neck). That is the only reason it gets a 4 start. Obviously, better research on my end could have prevented this purchase and I may have gone up to number 6 which I believe does have the locking mechanism.

I more than likely missed that information in the no. 5 description, but all in all good little pocket knife, really small and handy, but was a bit disappointed about the lack of locking mechanism.

If you are like me an expensive knife, pair of sunglasses, cuff links or handkerchief will be lost and never found within the first week of purchase. The Opinel Carbon No. 05 costs very little almost guaranteeing it will be with you until the bitter end.

I bought this for my wife for her clutch. I have a No. 08 that I’m crazy about, and figured she could use something too. Heck – everyone could use an Opinel Knife!

This was the first “necker” I had ever purchased. I now also have a Tops ALRT XL. Two totally different types of neck knives, but back to the CRKT Folts Minimalist. This knife came hair shaving sharp in a nice littke kydex sheath.

It looks as if the sheath was made for the tanto style Minimalist but it fits the bowie style I have perfectly. I have not noticed any rub marks on the knife and it is held securely; absolutely no fear of it coming out unintentionally.

The clasp used to connect the the string necklace isn’t the best quality, but I am confident that it will work just fine. The knife is so lightweight that I forget I am wearing it. It has a thin profile and remains hidden under my shirt; it doesn’t protrude out at all.

The ergonomics of the handle are well thought out and even though there is only enough room for 3 fingers, it feels good in my hand, remaining comfortable even after an hour of usage. The addition of the braided cord at the bottom of the handle is a nice touch that gives you a little more to hold on to.

The blade came razor sharp as I stated above and comes to an almost needle point. It carries itself like a larger blade and has been up to all the small tasks I have out it through: opening boxes/mail; carving and whittling a Native American style bow and arrows for my son, random cutting of objects throughout the day and it is very comfortable to hold for long periods.

The blade holds its edge decently and takes a keen edge with little effort. It is a great looking knife as well. These knives must be very popular because I saw them for sale (bowie model) at my local Lowes last week for almost the same price I paid at Home Essentials Direct.

Don’t get me wrong, the price on Home Essentials Direct was the lowest I have seen and I checked numerous websites. Overall, this is an extremely lightweight and durable neck knife that can be worn comfortably and concealed all day long.

The blade, while short, is extremely sharp and well suited for a number of daily tasks that any edc knife would need to perform, but I feel this knife would hold its own in a survival situation if necessary.

It’s a good looking knife and it comes with a good kydex sheath that retains the blade well. It also comes with a clip that screws onto the sheath for belt or outsude the pocket carry and can be mounted for horizontal or vertical carry.

All in all, this is a good knife for edc and I would highly reccomend it. I am interested in the Wharncliffe style blade and maybe the CRKT S. P. E. W.

Hopefully you aren’t as stupid as I am and you don’t slice your thumb open five minutes after taking it out of the box. Not used to rounded blade, I had my thumb in the wrong spot when I drew the blade from the sheath and gave myself a nasty cut.

Good thing: the blade is very sharp, so the wound should close quickly with the neat cut. I am used to thinking in terms of straight blades. BTW If slicing my thumb was not proof enough a sharpness test slicing the edge of printer paper shows this blade to be scary sharp.

It’s the sharpest knife I’ve ever tested. Updated to show my carry technique. I wanted to wear on my belt without open displaying, so I carry it upside side down and the handle slips into the pocket of my jeans.

Black belt and black holster draws no attention and I can remove it with one hand. If I carry in my pocked to not display I need two hands two retrieve it.

Overall I like it. But I dont love it. I guess for the price its more like a 4. 5 than a 4. It came today rather dull, I was fairly disappointed as I had seen so many reviews with “razor sharp” edges.

I am hoping to take a strop to it tonight and see if I can refine an edge to it. The edge is there but it takes a bit more force than it should on a paper slice and paracord test. The wrist lanyard is kind of useless so I already took that off its done with a very minimal strand count threading and it is more along the lines of the material used in those friendship bracelet/toe rings you saw when you were a kid in the 90s.

Grip: Exceptionally well designed 5/5 in this area. I have medium to large sized hands and it indexes perfectly where I need it to be. The bottom of the tang sits right between my ring finger and pinkey and its perfect.

I am a huge fan of micarta on knives. I think all of mine have it so that was a huge plus for such a low cost knife and the design is awesome as well with the green and black lines. Steel: Its a soft cheap steel.

I am not a steel snob and for 13 bucks no one needs to be. There are pros and cons to different types of steel and well, I dont plan on batoning wood with this thing or doing harsh things to the edge so once I refine the edge a bit I am sure I will be happy with it.

The benefit to softer cheaper steels is just that, super easy to sharpen and strop and usually if the edge is there that is all it takes is a good strop block or belt. Sheath: I give it a 4 out of 5 but for the price its a perfectly acceptable piece.

Its molded nylon/plastic and the sheath is molded for the tanto, dont be alarmed the blade tip means nothing in a hard sheath its all about how the lower end of the knife is held for retention so that is fine.

Comes with a belt loop that looks cheap and small so Im not sure if Ill even bother with it but it may be a decent backup. Its my first neck knife, so I am excited and overall I think it was a great purchase and I would not hesitate to recommend Its light, feels great in the hand and has an attractive fit and finish.

But you may need to hone that blade when you get it and just chop off the useless lanyard thing. EDIT*** I took it to my strop block and the edge is nice and sharp.

Between the five rowers in my family we have them all, the pilot, co-pilot, neko and others. I like the utility and ergonomics and price of this knife and continue to buy them but they could be improved for my use.

First, I have no need for the glass breaker hilt on the river. I’ve never had to steal a car at the boat ramp. It only catches soft skin in the middle of a big move. Second and most importantly, I do not at all like the ambidextrous handle, that makes is impossible to know which side is the sharp one without physically looking at the blade.

I get the point of making it lock into the sheath either way so that everyone can orient it to their needs and likes, however, the handle could be made with some sort of tactile recognition as to the orientation of the sharp side of the blade.

In a cold wet environment I can easily imagine trying to make a critical cut with the dull side, or placing a frozen thumb down on the line cutter and not even being able to feel my mistake until it’s too late.

May I suggest a set of finger grooves on the sharp side, and a smooth feel on the dull one?.

After carrying this knife on multiple extended trips in the BWCA, I’ve eventually gotten rid of it. It’s not bad, it’s just too specialized for water use and rope cutting to be a useful camp blade, and the steel is very soft.

If you’re not outright sailing, I don’t think you’ll find it useful. Pros: – Knife feels extremely solid, and is easy to grip despite not having a full rounded handle – Strong and sturdy construction – Rope cutter is very effective and a nice touch Cons: – Soft steel is an absolute pain to keep sharp – Very short straight blade, almost impossible to whittle/slice food/etc – Lack of a tip makes it frustrating to open some packaging or do delicate, precise cuts – Very thick blade makes it hard to sharpen to a fine edge.

This knife feels comfortable in my small hand and I like the multi-use aspects a lot. It also clips in and out easily with one hand. My only complaint is that, despite washing it thoroughly, it makes my hands itch very unpleasantly.

Probably me, not the product; I must have a sensitivity to the rubber used on the non-slip handle. So, great knife for boaters of all kinds but don’t buy it if you have sensitivity to rubber.

Just received my Neko knife and I immediately like it much better than the bulky Copilot design. It’s slim, low profile, and secure. Just don’t be an idiot like me and try to remove it from the sheath while you’re just holding the vest in your hands.

The friction release means you’re pulling it out with a lot of force and if you’re holding onto the vest instead of wearing it, your hands might be in the way. Several butterfly closures later, my left thumb appreciates how sharp these are.

I bought this knife a week ago. During its second use, I was paddling at our local white water park in my canoe and had a short swim. During the brief time I was in the water, the knife released from its sheath and is now lost (am assuming it is sadly sitting at the bottom of the Bow River).

I expect that a knife for white water sports should be able to withstand time spent in swiftly moving water without releasing from its sheath. Given that it was the second time I had paddled since buying the knife, I had not caused any damage to the knife or its sheath; it was brand new.

Neither MEC nor NRS would warranty the knife. If you buy this knife, I would suggest you create some after-market mod to ensure your knife does not have the same watery and sad end as mine.

I work as a kayak guide on the great lakes and often times you find yourself in the need of a nice knife. This knife is great for cutting cheese, spreading mayo, or divvying up that nice hunk of sausage in the cooler.

The inclusion of a bottle opener in this knife was also genius as nothing serves you better after a hard days open water crossing to Mackinac Island then cracking up a cold one on shore afterwards. In terms of use, the knife is great for clearing out obstructions in the skegg box (using the dull side) and holds a nice edge for cutting your way through any obstructions, it even came with a nice edge much to my own pain at times.

The knife stays on my vest well and I haven’t lost it yet. Though I do still highly recommend using a Lanyard for it. I did recommend it to a friend who bought it after the one he didn’t put on a Lanyard fell to the bottom of the bay.

I have always owned a slimline trapper all the way back when I was a kid. I love the sleek design and quality medal, always have always will.

This knife is top quality USA made , slim and light weight to carry in your pocket. Highly recommend it .

I highly recommend that you buy a Case XX Sodbuster with surgical stainless steel carbon blade. It’s razor sharp and holds a great edge. I tested it out by shaving the hair off my leg. Case XX Sodbuster Carbon blade black handle was all my dad ever carried.

He carried his in his pocket for 30 years and told me that if I ever found one to buy it, because Case stopped making them in the Carbon blades. Also the Case XX Sodbuster Carbon blades stay sharper and hold a edge alot longer than a stainless steel blade.

Service from Academy was stellar. Quick turnaround and shipping. The knife is good quality, but it doesn’t possess that definable “click” on open/close. Good, just not “great”.

This is very much a “you get what you pay for” kind of knife. I very much wanted a sodbuster style knife, and this is one of the best. Sodbusters are meant to be cheap and rugged. This absolutely fits that description and out of the box it was razor sharp.

I admit that I have been collecting minimalist sized knifes for fishing, mushrooming and food preparation while camping. They may a lil bit smaller but there’s a mini knife for every adventure and that I’ve proven time after time.

God Awful sharp. For some one who knows knife skills. Definitely not for the want to be but for an already is individual. You know someone on second or third enlistment. Second or third deployment or a southern gal, former military.

Just received my CRKT neck knife. Very light and compact. Secure fit in the sheath. Razor sharp and can shave with it. The handle is a bit skinny, however fits the tree finger of hand securely with your thumb on the gimping.

Nice little knife and i thoroughly recommend it for your 1st EDC or neck knife.

what can i say about this. Well, here’s a story that lead to my first working Hellefisk. After twenty-some years on the water, my favorite fishing knife leapt overboard in spectacular fashion and sunk.

Enter the Hellefisk, offered up by my very amused friend. “It floats” he says. And I became a believer. And the blade is awesome and easy to sharpen. I have other Hellefisk stories from streams here and there, but the boating one wins.

This is a boating knife!!!!.

The Helle Knife came very sharp as expected. There is a mix between simplicity and quality with these knives in that the material is not necessarily top of the line, but I think these knives are designed for their utility and not non-essential aesthetics.

With that said, the knife is very light weight and would probably float. The finger notch would have to be more rounded for me to really like the feeling, but then again, maybe that will change once I start using it.

The Hellefisk is shorter that most fillet knives (not by much), which I prefer since there are mainly panfish, small bass and catfish in this area. The sheath is simple, but doesn’t seem designed to hang off of a belt, but I usually throw fillet knives in a tackle box.

Altogether, I am not going to buy another fillet knife and plan to use this knife until it either breaks or won’t take an edge. I think the price is a little steep (around $70), but I will find out whether it was worth the price in a couple months.

Would I recommend this knife to you? I think it would be great for someone fishing primarily small game fish up to medium size bass. Of course you could make just about any sharp knife work, but I prefer the right knife for the right job, so I am looking forward to giving this knife its shot.

Obviously it is a little pricey, but it is up to you if you prefer a semi-custom knife versus fully manufactured. I purchased this knife because I believe I am going to spend enough time fishing to justify the price.

One last comment: the last fillet knife I had was cheap with tiny serrations in the blade to assist with the cutting process, but it made the process of filleting feel more like carving or sawing. This knife (with no serrations) should make filleting feel like filleting.

This is a gift for a fisherman I know, however I was very pleased with my purchase. I have the Helle girl scout knife for myself. My father is from Norway and we take pride in that. Can’t wait to see how Mr Fisherman likes his gift.

🙂 Going to test if it floats at some point but reading several other reviews, it seems like it floats no problem. Location says Ohio, but I am in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

As expected, the craftsmanship, quality and, of course the sharpness of the cutting edge are second to none. Quite a handy little companion the Nying is. Surprisingly agile, comfortable hand fit, and sturdy.

The list of applications/uses for the knife will continue to grow. Very nice piece.

I bought this as a hunting knife in order to keep my cold-sensitive fingers from being frostbit, again. The insulating wood handle is perfect in that regard. Palm-filling, but with a shape that allows great control with or without wearing gloves, the ergonomics of this knife are fantastic! In my large hands, it felt good regardless of the grip I used.

Sharp right out of the box, the Nying only needed a little stropping to get scary sharp. As for the flaws, the handle material is just ugly; mine has black knots (though tight) and no figure at all, unlike the product photo.

The blade, though polished, has deep tooling marks, like finishing it was done in a rush. Neither of these seems to affect performance, but just a bit disappointing after seeing the pictures and other Helle knives up close.

If you can get it at a good price, this is a great utilitarian knife!.

This has been my EDC knife for the last eighteen months and I have found it to be excellent. It came sharp and it is easy to keep sharp. The handle is large enough to fit my hand and to give me control over the blade.

The blade is the right proportion to the handle so that I can use the knife for both carving and day to day cutting. I have found no place that makes the knife seem awkward or painful to use. I also like the way the knife fits in the sheath and particularly the tab that locks the blade there.

Occasionally I try other knives for a day or two, but I always return to this one. I carry it in my right front pocket and rely on it to do its job whatever that may be.

I’ve been wanting an Opinel forever just never got around to it. This knife is amazingly sharp with the quality carbon blade and i do admire the simplicity of the lightweight wooden handle. It’s as simple as they get.

Unfortunately, that simplified design causes the wood to swell and contract with fluctuations in temperature, more to the point dewpoint and humidity. This can make opening and closing the knife a PIA.

Also, as these French blades, even though cheaply priced are sorely sought after, it would have been awesome to see an option for a case or some sheath holder to protect the knife and wooden handle when not in use.

Overall I expected more from the Company who has been bumping out blades for over 100 years. Oh the other knife was so insignificantly tiny i couldn’t process it as a real blade. IT reminded me of one of those little derringer screwdrivers that comes with the hardware set on a piece of new furniture.

Like it was made for the people of Lilliput. SO i just gave that to my father who uses it on his 1800s ship modeling project.

Brilliant pocket knife. Simple, solid mechanism, nice wood handle that’s well shaped and well finished. Dropped a star because the edge was a bit rolled. Didn’t take long to get perfect with emery paper, now it has a really sharp edge that lasts well.

I think the edge is slightly convex rather than 100% flat and better for it. I’ve been making shims tricky bits of shuttering to repair a roof. Therese were only from pine wood but very seasoned and it slices through without much effort.

Can’t open one-handed, but very easy to close and lock one handed – handy working at height and holding on with other hand.

When I use camping equipment, I really use camping equipment. I have done this with the Opinel Carbone No. 7, and despite its delicate look and reviews from others here, it has managed to survive with only a few visible wounds.

When I first got the knife, it was sharpened to a hair-splitting incisiveness. Whittling? Cheese? Fabric? Paper? Bag of moose meat? Ropes to tow gliders? Awkward silences? It cut them with ease and joy.

With little care other than occasional “oiling” from greasy food, it retained that youthful gleam. That is, until I used it to open a tuna can. It opened the can really well — but the edge bent. The knife was actually still quite sharp, just kind of 1mm was sideways.

After about a year in this functional yet downgraded condition, I found someone to sharpen the wee beastie and give it the TLC it so-very-much desired and needed. It looks a little chippy now, but it is still sharper than any of my other knives (which isn’t that hard to be).

This past summer, the knife and I went on about a dozen backcountry paddling trips. It’s my primary knife — it thrived in wet conditions being driven into wood, sand and food. It lost the ring for its locking mechanism (hence the loss of one star), but it still seems to stay closed or open, whichever I prefer at that moment.

All in all, this is my most solid knife that still hasn’t been confiscated at an airport. It was a steal at the price for which I purchased it (which I can’t state because of the terms and conditions of reviewing here, but it was regular price circa 2017).

Seriously, the best knife I own. The weight, fit and finish set it above others I have in my collection. I added the optional belt D-ring. This allows the knife to hang lower and is great when wearing jackets or backpack hip belt.

The knife just feels bold. It cuts and batons with ease. I am looking forward to using the thick spine for fire starting this up coming camping season. This is my go to. As always great service from COE.

Even though the pandemic(?) has disrupted the world and Christmas has put back the mail service to the pony express days, I ordered this knife Christmas Eve and it arrived yesterday. Excellent service Folks!!! Thank You!!! The knife is really a work of art.

The burl handles were not “book-ends” but very nice and well formed. I have a med/large hand and it fits me very well. The lanyard hole is a great touch!!! It came with a small leather lace and it was too short so I replaced with slightly longer dark brown leather lace and it helps me withdraw the knife from the case.

The case feels like it has an internal locking cause when you put knife into it clicks in and remains nice and secure. The leather of the case itself is nice and thick and well made. It only has one rivet at the opening and and that should be sufficient.

The loop is larger enough to accommodate my 2 inch wide belt. I am a big fan of the drop point blades and the K720 Tool Steel is also top quality for edge retention and using diamond stones with sharpen up nice and easy.

I am not a big Scandi Grind fan but it is a simple grind and is easy to maintain. Cannot beat a full thang knife and this in one of them!!! Over all think this will be a great knife with will sever me well!!! 🙂 🙂 :-).

Great length edge for extended use. The mellow bevel give less resistance slicing nicely for a 4mm thick blade compared. Handle has a really comfortable shape, nice weight, decent balance not really noticing any heavy end to counter balance.

The sheath is nice quality seems reliable so far. For winter a stainless option with weather proof handle would be handy. Not ideal if you want it easy to clean.

Feels pretty solid for the price and came decently sharp. Compared to the more expensive one I bought from here aswell it’s dull. But you get what you pay for and it’s a great sword for the price.

Very solid, well-crafted knife. Just got it and I love it. Came very sharp and will definitely be buying again. It’s definitely worth the money and will appear to last a long time.

I have been carrying Opinels around on hikes for decades, in various sizes and steel types. The No. 7 is small and light but still functional. Go for the No 8 if you want a handier food prep knife. I also prefer the carbon steel to the stainless version: easier to sharpen.

I deduct one star because the wood handle tends to eventually swell / contract, so the lock ring does not always stay tight (or the blade is rather difficult to open). Can’t remember this happening to the same extent on previous / older versions.

I’ve been eyeing Opinel knives for 30 plus years, but have always been a Victorinox multinational knife fan. For fixed blades, I have a Morakniv carbon scout. The Opi #7 is the perfect compromise in blade size.

I couldn’t believe how light this knife is, perfect for my new ultralight ventures. Out of the box, it’s super sharp, and being carbon, easy to resharpen. I’ve been oiling the handle and blade, as recommended after each use.

Looking forward to many mushroom forays and camping adventures.

I gave this knife to my cousin and his wife since they were looking to start using ‘grown up tools’ in their kitchen. The kids were old enough and they just decided it was time. He thanks me every time we see each other, and occasionally I get pictures of something they have cooked.

This is that kind of knife, it inspires love and cooking creativity. It is a hybrid of Japanese and German knife making tradition. The handle is a perfect example. It is a little heavier like a German knife, but a little narrower like a Japanese knife.

The steel that the blade is made of is German and the craftsmanship is Japanese. The combination is a hard durable blade that stays sharp for a long time. Hone it regularly and sharpen maybe once a year; you’ll have it forever.

In this case the shape of the knife is all Japanese. The nakiri is an excellent chopping knife. It cuts up meats and vegetables easily. Great for vegetable-centric diets. Dishwasher safe, but hand wash to retain the beauty and look of new.

Handle is very comfortable and has a great balance. Knife came incredibly sharp and is amazing for vegetables. It is also the best looking knife I’ve owned. I was worried it would be too big for my girlfriend since she has small hands but she found it pretty easy to handle.

Would definitely recommend this knife.

I just received this a few days ago and it is fine piece of cutlery. Fits very nicely in hand and as sharp as a razor. It goes through vegetables like butter. I have also used it to cut up chicken. Very nice and easily cuts through the meat.

Just be careful not to cut bone or anything frozen. Leave those for your cleaver knife. I highly recommend. Very well priced. I bought from Cutlery and more.

Seems like a really functional outdoor knife. Compact and lightweight, grippy handle, partial serrated blade and whistle – all things I like about it. Also quite sharp. Satisfied with the purchase!

Good quality blade. Handle is a little lighter, maybe slightly less sturdy feeling than I expected – but not a big deal, and as a result, isn’t too heavy in the pocket. Seems like you’d have to be a bit careful no to bend or break the locking mechanism.

This is my first mec. ca purchase and my first Opinel. The knife arrived In no time. It looks good as expected but it was so dull that I have to work on it to be useable. I thought of returning it but I have already scratched the blade from sharpening it.

I paid almost 3 times the price of their wooden handled version. Opinel should have sharpened this properly before shipping it out. Not a good first impression Opinel!.

The advertised one-hand flick-to-open does not work – the mechanism is too stiff – so this is not a good rescue knife. It takes two hands to open this knife. It is a good utility knife if you need to cut a rope on shore, slice an apple or spread peanut butter at the lunch stop.

In a life-or-death situation, I would not count on being able to open it quickly.

I am a whitewater kayak instructor and recently added this knife to my rescue vest. It’s very easy to open and a bit tougher to close. Thing is, when the knife is needed it’s easy to get at and deploy.

And although it is harder to close and needs both hands to do so, in theory by the time I need to put it away it has done it’s job. It’s a great knife and I like the shape and the serrated edge which expands its usefulness in an emergency situation.

Sometimes you just need a smaller sized knife when performing detailed cutting. This knife fulfills that need, easy to handle and control. Extremely sharp and does not feel bulky in the hand. Lightweight and has an overall appealing appearance.

The sheath that is provided by the factory with this knife is very disappointing. It is no where near the quality that is indicative of the quality of the knife.

It’s a good value. If you want a beater, this is it. Good looking from a distance. It’s only 420 stainless, but it’s sharp. It won’t hold an edge that long, but is easy to sharpen. It’s acceptable, and has no stray tool marks like some cheap blades.

Look to the Nordic countries to find good workmanship always. The handle is comfy. The only thing I do not like is the silver plastic. Even if it works well, it sure looks cheap. but it what can you expect for 25 bucks in a full size knife ? Excellent sheath no matter what it costs.

Black leather with a liner. I have paid more than the entire cost of this knife for just a decent sheath. Makes it really worth it.
